Help wanted - Spotify list for the new songs

Post by Henrik »

Would anyone be interested in creating Spotify lists of the new* songs? I have a spreadsheet with all songs attached. All you need to do is creating playlists in the exact order of this Excel file. You don't need to fill in any information in the spreadsheet. If songs are missing at Spotify that can't be helped, but as long as the existing songs are in the right order, it will be quite easy for me to match the playlists with this spreadsheet, when you're done.

As usual you can do as much work as you like. For example someone can do A-B, another C-D, etc., and I can put the pieces together in the end.

The next update might be the best update AM has ever had. And if the Spotify lists are there in time too, it will be fantastic!

*This means 1897-2012. I still haven't gotten to the 2013 songs.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I can take #-A and then see if I have time for B after that. Should I include songs from the separate list at the bottom of the page?

No, that would only be confusing. They could be a separate "take".

I can do C-E, that's another 640 songs.

I can start working on F tomorrow.

Sorry to bug you about this again, but I notice that "My Funny Valentine" is still there even though the artist name is listing the name of the composers rather than any of the recording artists. I found that the song is on NPR's 300 American Records of the 20th Century, and listening to the story about it, it seems that it is referring to the composition itself rather than any specific recordings. Regardless, if the song is decided to be on the website, the artist name should be changed to the more clean-looking "Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart".

This site is excellent, and I want to help it be the best that it can be.

Henrik, I'm sorry to be living in Germany. There are already 3 songs from C-E that are in Spotify, but I can not listen to :-(

Luckily, next week I am in Holland, so I hopefully can check these songs by then.

Should really get a discount for paying 10 Euros per month ...

Sorry about that Andre, but you could just let me know and I'll listen to them. And songs that are part of studio albums on Spotify are probably safe picks.

For the record, the Lorentz/Hart entry of "My Funny Valentine" will not be included in the site update. Neither will Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings", unless someone can identify a "milestone recording". And I'm going to remove Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" for the same reason. I'm not aware of any significant recording from the era (I don't think it would be right to use the recording/release date for "The Sting" movie), Joplin just published music sheets I think.

This is quite painful, as "Adagio for Strings" and "The Entertainer" are huge favorites of mine. (That might be the reason why I even considered them.)

I'm not sure I completely agree with your reasoning here, Henrik, as the Marvin Hamlisch arrangement of 1973 strikes me as the iconic version of this song. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070735/sou ... ttsnd_ql_7

It's definitely iconic, but do you think the song could be listed under 1973 and (co-?)credited to Marvin Hamlisch? All the critics list appearances mention Scott Joplin alone, and all the only year mentioned is 1902.

For any list appearance after 1973 (which I presume would be all of them) it is a high probability that the critics' principal exposure to The Entertainer would be via "The Sting" and I would have no hesitation at crediting it "The Entertainer" (S. Joplin, comp. 1902; M. Hamlisch, arr. 1973). For critics lists prior to 1973, you would have to add (time travel, courtesy Doc Brown, 1985).

There's also the songs that are currently bubbling under and the 2013 songs. I have a Spotify list of 386 bubbling under songs that were in the top 3000 before the last update, but there's also another 1667 songs that needs to be worked on, as well as 147 songs from 2013. I'll get back on this...

I think this hasn't made any progress since the last message, or has it? I would like to help out here a bit, but won't do the whole thing. Maybe 500 songs or so. From the above file there are around 2000 songs left. Did new ones get add that still have to be done, like songs from 2013? Maybe this task can be divided between 4 users here, roughly 500 per person?

Rob, I don't expect anyone to add more than 500 songs. If that's possible for you that would be great.

I don't know why it's difficult to recruit people for this job. The alltime playlist currently has 630 followers, so it seems to me that more than a handful of people would appreciate a complete list of almost 10,000 songs (including bubbling unders) after the update. :?

Re: Help wanted - Spotify list for the new songs

Okay, then I'll pick up L, M and N later this week. That's a little over 600 songs, but I don't want to stop with an unfinished letter. Are there any songs missing from that file here or is it up to date?

Here's L:

Absent on Spotify:

La Buena Vida – Qué nos va a Pasar
Lambchop – The Old Gold Shoe
Lee Hazlewood & Suzi Jane Hokum – Summer Wine*
The Left Banke – Pretty Ballerina
Loose Joints – It’s All Over My Face**
Loose Joints – Tell You (Today)
Low – Murderer
Lucio Battisti – Don Giovanni

* This song is included in the hit version of Lee Hazlewood with Nancy Sinatra. Include this one?
** A remix is available.

This is the part with Limp Bizkit, so rejoice!

This only includes the song on the spreadsheet here. I'l ask again, should other songs, from 2013 or that made the list since, be included now?

It will be much easier for me to merge the AM data with the Spotify lists if you follow the spreadsheet in this thread's initial post. Let's do this first and then move on to the remaining data.

Any progress with I and J, Dan?

Because I and J are not done yet, are they? I must have made a mistake when I wrote "And thanks Sweepstakes Ron for taking I and J." Dan, did you quit the task because you thought Sweepstakes Ron would do it?

Actually, 2013 is already done by Setherex, some posts above.

Sorry for taking so long. Most of my evenings have been taken up with TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) classes... I'm going to the Far East later this year to teach English for a year or two (or three).

I have a few free evenings this week and should have the playlists for I and J finished by Thursday.

Thanks again for all the insanely unselfish work you're doing for the next update.

I just noticed that the Excell file at the end starts again with some extra songs in alphabetical order. So the L-list wasn't complete, but I fixed that now. The new L-list:

And here is the complete and very long M-list:

Absent on Spotify:

M:
M83 – Run into Flowers
Maestro Fresh Wes – Let Your Backbone Slide
Mala Rodríguez – Tengo un Trato*
The Margarets – Alain Delon
Marley Marl, featuring Masta Ace, Craig G, Kool G Rap & Big Daddy Kane – The Symphony
Master at Work present India – To Be In Love
Max Q – Way of the World
MC Lyte – I Cram to Understand U*
Meat Puppets – Backwater
Michael Chapman – Postcards Old Scarborough
Money Mark – Cry
Money Mark – Hand In Your Head
The Move – Fire Brigade

* A remix is available
Notes:
Manitoba’s Hendrix with Ko is included under the artist name Caribou, because the artist changed his artist name later and rereleased his material under that name. The song is the same.

I'll do N at the end of the week. After that this playlist will only be completed just over a half, so I would again like to ask people if they want to take on one letter. Or more of course.

If I had the time (or a Spotify account for that matter) I would...

Do you know this song by one of my favourite Glasgow indie bands?

I have a cousin who went to Japan for a "year or two" in 1984. She's still there.

Hey, thanks for posting that link. I hadn't heard of either the band or the song before. I like it - they have a sound that reminds me a bit of Belle and Sebastian or Camera Obscura. And of course I can relate to the lyrics of the song: "Leave your friends and family / Fly an aeroplane across the sea / Knowing not a soul, not even me / Until you land". Sometimes I wake in the middle of the night and wonder what the hell it is I think I'm doing. But now is the right time for me to do it, and I'm looking forward to it.

Henrik, here is the playlist for I. The only song I couldn't find on Spotify is "Gothic Girl" by International Pony. J will follow later.

Not to be picky or anything, but since Henrik said in the opening post that he'd like everything listed exactly as numbered by the excel sheet, shouldn't these additional songs at the end of the list be included in a separate playlist?

Ah, I forgot about that. If this is still the case, I can always remove them again, of course.
