2014 Album Cover Poll

Post by acroamor »

Hello

Everyone seems to be in favor of the idea of doing a poll of the top albums covers of all time, and I think I'll be the one to run it.

FOR YOUR LISTS:
Lists can include the cover of any officially released album (studio, live, compilation), EP, or single. This will not include any of the internal artwork, lyrics books, or other inserts. However, if the album's cover is a gatefold (like Bitches Brew for example) you may factor that in. If there are multiple different covers for the album (like Is This It?) please specify as best you can in parentheses.
Lists should have at least ten covers to be included, and the top fifty of each list will be counted. If you choose to include more than fifty, more power to you.
Please format lists according to:
1. Artist Name - Album Name (Any additional information)
and so on.

The deadline to have your lists in will be July 15th, so you'll have a little over a month to prepare a list if you haven't already.

If you have any questions or suggestions, don't hesitate to tell me. I'm excited to see everyone's lists!

Nick, which cover of MBDTF? The black guy or the ballet dancer? I would guess the black guy, but just wondering because the ballet dancer is almost as common.

I totally forgot about the ballet dancer cover. I meant the "black man beast thing having sex with a phoenix girl while drinking beer" cover.

Given the time I have, it's too difficult for me to make a list of favourite album covers, but if this poll comes to a second phase where we rank the finalists, I will join in then.

Re: 2014 Album Cover Poll

First thought; I must not be a very visual person, because I really can't identify my favourite cover art.

Second thought; looking at my top fifty albums, almost all of them have among my favourite cover art. Maybe I rank my albums entirely visually?

Corollary (hypothesis): If I love the album, I will also love the art.

Must give this more thought...

I do want to specifically note the entire discography of Chicago, who reinvented that iconic logo through 30 (?) albums. My favourite was probably the chocolate bar.

I am looking forward to making my list, probably sometime next week, but I wonder what to do with covers like the one for Fleet Foxes' debut album or Bob Dylan's Modern Times. Both would rank high, but the main image is taken from a famous work onto itself, so that makes it less special I guess. How do other people feel about ranking such covers?

Right off the bat, I noticed that if I already liked an album, it was easy to extend that goodwill to the cover art. And that the reverse would usually (not always) take effect for a bad album and its cover art. I haven't even heard a few of the albums on my own list, and actually, I'm not even sure I want to! On another note, I almost want to make a side list of great albums with lame covers...

I didn't know that the Fleet Foxes cover came from somewhere else, but I'd still keep it where I had it on my list. Covers don't necessarily have a lot to do with the musicians at work inside (except if they're featured on the front, or except for them endorsing the album cover selection). I like the Fleet Foxes cover because it fits them so well, regardless of whether it was commissioned or not -- whereas, if that cover was put on a Beatles album or a William Shatner album or a Nirvana album, it would lose a lot of its effect.

On Album covers like Fleet Foxes, I see no reason why they couldn't be ranked. Odelay and The Fat Of The Land both have images that were sourced from books and are not original photos. I also view them as new artworks as they are framing the work in another light and there are still design considerations when putting text on the image.

1. Bjork - Homogenic

Image
Dress by Alexander McQueen and photo by Nick Night. It's warrior imagery and icy feel mirror the album contents.

2. The B52s - The B52s

Image
It's just a fun album cover. Bright, bold and in your face.

3. Gorillaz - Demon Days

Image
It takes the best elements of the Let It Be cover and give it a fresh update.

4. The White Stripes - Elephant

Image
The best of all the White Stripes album covers. There are many subtle variations of it around.

5. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

Image
A haunting image with contrasting bright pink text.

6. Aphex Twin - Windowlicker

Image
While it's a 12" single I count this as one of my favorites. It's playfully creepy.

7. The Pixies - Doolittle
8. The Beatles - Revolver
9. David Bowie - Hunky Dory
10. Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground and Nico

11. The Beach Boys - All Summer Long
12. Radiohead - In Rainbows
13. The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
14. Grace Jones- Nightclubbing
15. David Bowie - Station To Station
16. Child Of Love - Child Of Love
17. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Ballerina Cover, but I don't think it matters)
18. The Grates - Secret Rituals
19. Janelle Monae - The Archandroid
20. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

21. David Bowie - Low
22. Sigur Ros - Ágætis byrjun
23. The Smashing Pumpkins - Melon Collie And The Infinite Sadness
24. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
25. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
26. La Roux - Trouble In Paradise (The newest album on the list, hasn't even been released)
27. Hercules And Love Affair - Hercules And Love Affair
28. Radiohead - Amnesiac
29. Goldfrapp - Black Cherry
30. The Beatles - Revolver

31. Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires
32. Beck - OIdelay
33. The Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
34. Bjork - Debut
35. The Kills - Midnight Boom
36. Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals
37. Todd Terje - It's Album Time
38. The Avalanches - Since I left You
39. Hot Chip- Made In The Dark

40. Sia - Some People Have Real Problems
41. Flight Of The Conchords - Flight Of The Conchords
42. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I am,
43. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
44. Daft Punk - Human After All
45. The Strokes - This is it
46. Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain
47. Danger Mouse and Daniel Luppi - ROME
48. Rolling Stones- Some Girls
49. The Beatles - The Beatles (White Album)
50. Little Dragon - Machine Dreams

This is my starting list. I'm sure there will be changes in the next few weeks.

If anyone is interested at looking at the artworks for these, I'm ranking them in a Flickr Album: https://www.flickr.com/gp/maschinedesign/90wP79/

EDIT: I have updated my lists.

Thanks. I suppose it’s a personal list that’s about more than finding the artwork aesthetically pleasing (although I do seem to like beautiful images of the sea and sky quite a lot). :) Whether it was a conscious decision or not, some of the covers I chose seem to reflect not only events in my life that have helped to shape me (like growing up in South Africa during apartheid) but also reflect a few good ole left-wing principles that are important to me: that prejudice can be reduced if people just put themselves in the shoes of the target of their prejudice; that violence (although I sometimes find it amusing or entertaining in film or music) is pointless and destructive in real life; that a society which is tolerant and diverse is a more healthy society; and that love is love, no matter who you fall in love with. But maybe I’m over-analysing it. All of those covers made my list because I like the way they look!

I really like your list too – captivating images. Nice lists all round, in fact.
...will keep us together.

Re: 2014 Album Cover Poll

Post by Rob »

Making this list was great, if only to make me realize once again how many great album covers there are. It's also frustrating for the same reason, because a list of 50 barely scratches the surface of all the covers I love. But it does give a clear view of the types that usually get to me. For example, strange or unsettling images usually make a huge impact, straight pictures of the the artist(s) don't, unless the artist(s) persona gets captured in a unique way. Great atmosphere or originality is appreciated.

I should also add that there is no correlation between my appreciation for the cover and the music on the album. In fact, there are a lot of selections I made where I didn't ever hear the album, just as that many brilliant albums have boring or ugly covers. Sometimes a cover scores bonus points for really capturing the music in an image, though.

I did accept covers that used pre-existing images, unless with movie soundtracks that usually just copy the poster. It seems a bit much to give Blade Runner a spot because the movies poster was so awesome.

Here are my 50 picks, from bottom to top:

50
Image
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark
Iron Maiden have this thing going on with cheesy horror covers that perhaps looked scary at the time, but now look dated and ridiculous. But I can't resist them. This one is a place-holder for the complete works. I chose the creepy tree devil.

49.
Image
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Probably the only album cover that is more known than the music on it. It's just a banana, but sometimes the simplest images are the ones that stay with you the most.

48.
Image
The Penguin Cafe Orchestra – Music from the Penguin Cafe
You got to respect a band that not only call themselves The Penguin Cafe Orchestra, but also promote their album with an image of a rich looking penguin relaxing on a penguin terrace. It doesn't give a clue about the musical contents, but it makes me want to give it a listen anyway.

47.
Image
Johnny Cash - American Recordings
Now this is how you use the portrait of an artist too make a great album cover. At the same time a simple black and white photo of Cash in the outdoors with some dogs, but somehow it has almost a mythic quality. This is The Man in Black!

46.
Image
John Martyn - Solid Air
This is a case in which I find it hard to explain why I love it. There is something mystical about it that usually isn't achieved with such simplicity.

45.
Image
Stooges - Raw Power
It took me a few looks before I actually noticed that there is a big head on its side all across the cover. I thought it was some sort of fire. It works amazingly, complimenting the feverish look of the whole thing.

44.
Image
Pink Floyd - Wish You Where Here
You meet a guy on fire. What do you do? Shake is hand of course! Only on album covers.

43.
Image
U2 - Under a Blood Red Sky
Or: Under a Hot Red Sky, as this cover suggests. U2 performing in the utmost heat, achieved with a simple lighting effect. It fits this larger-than-life band.

42.
Image
R.E.M. - Murmur
R.E.M. prefers vague images on their covers, usually with great success. The first was the best. Nature shots make great covers. Strange nature shots even better ones.

41.
Image
Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues Singers
I like how it suggests older times than the album came out, fitting for a compilation of a the time near-forgotten music from another era.

40.
Image
Pink Floyd - Obscured by the Clouds
Easily Pink Floyds most simple cover, but that makes it all the more remarkable. It has a quiet beauty that I don't necessarily relate to Floyd.

39.
Image
Muse - Absolution
Who hasn't felt like the guy there, looking up in the sky? This cover captures the longing and feeling of displacement that's so typical of Muse actually better than their songs. Or is that blasphemy?

38.
Image
Swans - The Seer
Dangerous dogs always do it for me, especially in quiet images like this. It doesn't look ferocious, but I don't trust things that come out of the dark like that. They should have put a swan in that picture. However, that would have cost the cover it's inclusion here no doubt.

37.
Image
Sepultura - Arise
More nasty creatures. Where Iron Maiden's creations look funny now, this one is still very creepy. I don't want to see it Arise.

36.
Image
Prefab Sprout - Andromeda Heights
Gladly, after two beasts out to kill me again something beautiful, like a modern take on a Van Gogh painting. One of two album covers I included that I learned to know in this topic. Thanks for that! The title is great too.

35.
Image
Lorde - The Love Club
Back to nasty animals. No not Lorde herself (although she has a slightly mischievous look on her face), but I don't trust the rat in her hands. Just like Cash before her Lorde succeeds in crafting a somewhat mythological image of herself here. It doesn't necessarily fits her very modern sounding music, but it does in some way fit her image. Sadly, after this EP she gave her debut album the most boring cover imaginable.

34.
Image
Parliament - Mothership Connection
This is one of the silliest things I've ever seen. That's why I love it.

33.
Image
Uriah Heep - Sea of Light
Prog rock is probably the most reliable genre to find great album covers. Most prominent are these fantasy landscapes that seem vaguely inspired by Salvador Dali. Yes had a lot of them, but the greatest of them they seemed to keep for the inner sleeves, so I didn't know how to vote for them. Uriah Heep has the best front cover and my choice as the place holder for it's particular type of cover, of which I'm quite fond.

32.
Image
String Driven Thing - The Machine That Cried
The cover of this obscure album might or might not have inspired the Metroid games. Whatever, it's great.

31.
Image
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
An even better example than the Cash album of how to capture an artist's personality in one image. The blurred photograph of a defiant, moody looking Dylan makes immediately clear that he is a somewhat hard to grasp and that he is best when singing angry or confused songs (a side that was actually never better presented in songs than on Blonde on Blonde). Wasn't this originally meant to be upside down? That's even a better fit.

30.
Image
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Another cover whose appeal is hard to explain. The off-kilter photograph above a partying (?) group of people, with a slight over-exposed look somehow makes the chandelier seems to come alive. A vampire weekend indeed. Interestingly, all the Vampire Weekend covers have been great up till now. The modern masters of cover art?

29.
Image
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
Weird, mystic, ecstatic and... vaguely Asian? Why not? It's Kate Bush after all.

28.
Image
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Album covers of George Clinton-lead groups are rarely boring, but even for them this is some weird stuff. Unsettling in the right way, a perfect visualization of the feeling of their title track.

27.
Image
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
And the prize for the most creative use of a pre-existing image goes to The Pogues. Funnily enough, if there is one band that I would expect to find on the Raft of the Medusa it is these guys.

26.
Image
Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours
Melancholic and outright sad, but still cool, as only Frank Sinatra can be.

25.
Image
The Zombies - Oracle and Odyssey
Psychedelic albums are as easily recognizable for their art style as jazz and prog albums, but for some reason they don't always work for me. Besides this one the cover for Cream's Disreali Gears is perhaps the most famous example of the style, but that one shows its usual problem: it's a too much of a mess. Oracle and Odyssey gets it right, however. It's truly beautiful.

24.
Image
Patti Smith Group - Radio Ethiopia
Another case of hard to explain greatness. Just a very interesting photograph, well used.

23.
Image
The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
Probably the most famous album cover ever (except perhaps Abbey Road, which just missed my list) and it's easy to see why. It's just one of those images you can stare at for ages just taking in the details, but it also works as total whole.

22.
Image
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Ah prog rock, how I love your album covers. An extreme close-up of a screaming, cartoonish guy. Unforgettable.

21.
Image
U2 - War
The most defiant, angry looking cover ever. A wonderful image for an album famous for it's protest songs. The use of a kid is especially effective. If it would have been one of the band members looking at us like that this cover would probably not have come close to the list.

20.
Image
Nirvana - Nevermind
In my more cynical days I think this is actually true: you can learn a baby how to swim this way. A deserving famous cover, it doesn't really visualize the grunge sound, but it captures the world view that Nirvana seems to put in their songs.

19.
Image
The National - Trouble Will Find Me
Disgusting, but sometimes that's what's needed to create great art. I'm glad not every album cover is like this, but I will never forget it.

18.
Image
Ride - Nowhere
After that disurbing cover by The National it's time for something more calming. However, there is a ripple moving along the water. Looks like trouble will find me again.

17.
Image
Foals - Holy Fire
This one manages something that's almost a paradox: epic, but quiet. "Gorgeous" is the word invented for these kind of images.

16.
Image
Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now
This album cover plays directly to my love of for Edward Hopper paintings. It makes sense that Mitchell would probably be at the Nighthawks diner.

15.
Image
Patti Smith - Horses
All hail the queen of album covers. Again I don't know how they managed to make these photographs so iconic and with so much speaking power. All I know is that almost every Patti Smith cover is worthy of inclusion, but this one is rightfully the most famous.

14.
Image
Alan Hull - Pipedream
Using great paintings for your album covers is cheap, but I'll be damned if I don't love it most of the time.

13.
Image
PJ Harvey - Rid of Me
We already saw Cash, Lorde and Dylan try to do it before her, but no music artist's spirit was ever captured so brilliantly in one photograph of the artist him- or herself as PJ Harvey here, at least the spirit of this part of her career. It's somewhat uncomfortable to look at, but absolutely right.

12.
Image
Bob Dylan & The Band - The Basement Tapes
There was another 1975 album called Wish You Where Here, but this one deserves that title. Looks like the most weirdly awesome basement ever.

11.
Image
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
The sky in the pool and the water in the sky. A great inversion that makes another striking image.

10.
Image
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
The question on whether this counts as a psychedelic cover isn't as important as how great it is. It gives all the "real" psychedelic covers a run for its money and then some. Strange, but beautiful, as I like them best.

9.
Image
Sigur Rós - Valtari
Oh my God, it's a mirage. Of some sorts. Great use of a filter and a truly mystical image. By now, it should be clear that I love stuff like this.

8.
Image
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Jazz albums sometimes seem to have almost a house style: cool, dark photographs of it's main artist. It's a great style, but its so common that nothing stands out enough to make this list. As far as I know Miles Davis started the trend, but he also broke it better than anyone else, with his hallucinatory cover for Bitches Brew.

7.
Image
Kensington - Vultures
A Dutch band I don't care much for, but this is one hell of logo they made for themselves on Vultures. No wonder they use it every time they perform now, as part of their stage.

6.
Image
Sky Ferreira - Night Time, My Time
The other album cover I discovered through this topic. Thanks again! There are many, many covers that use women either naked or half-naked, or otherwhise in sexy poses. I have avoided them mostly here, because it's a bit of a cheap way to draw attention and great to look at for different reasons than the other covers in my list. This is a different matter, however. The angry look and the "wet lense" give it a dark undertone that make it truly remarkable.

5.
Image
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
A little girl (Yoshimi) steps towards the weirdest robot ever: album cover heaven. Great art style. It's also the only cover here that makes me want to see what happens next. Somebody make it into an anime, please (yes, there is a musical, but this cover doesn't scream "musical" to me).

4.
Image
Vampire Weekend - Contra
Just as that I mostly work around album covers that have women in various states of undress I also didn't really wanted to include albums that simply have cute looking girls on them, for the same reason. But this picture of an undeniably cute girl is just too striking. I love the way she seems to have been caught off-guard, in the dark somehow, continuing the album cover theme of slightly dark but ultimately nice pictures with a spontaneous feel to them.

3.
Image
The Clash - Londong Calling
This album cover doesn't just capture the essence of The Clash, or the punk movement, but of hard rock as a whole. What other album cover can make such a claim?

2.
Image
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Another cheap addition to my list. Pieter Brueghel de Oudere (or The Elder, as the English prefer to call him) may well be my favorite painter, so this was an almost to obvious choice. But this is also the only album I ever bought on basis of it's cover alone, without knowing what type of music I would get. More surprisingly, it sounded as the cover suggests. So no further complains from me.

1.
Image
The Boxer Rebellion - Promises
I've never heard this album. I only know it's lead single, Diamonds, which last year was a minor hit in The Netherlands and apparently nowhere else in the world. It's a very fine song, but doesn't come close to the power of this album cover. It has a lot of things I love: a great composition, a somewhat overwhelming feeling and it seems a say lot even though it's hard to explain what exactly. It makes you feel small and gasp for breath. And it's just an amazing work of beauty.

And that's it. It's pointless to make a list of honorable mentions, because that would include hundreds of albums. I might have forgotten some that deserved a place in the top 50, but since I love everything in here to death it's only a small matter.

On a more critical note: this project made me look at all the album covers of Michael Jackson. If Vampire Weekend and Patti Smith are king and queen of album covers I'll nominatie Michael Jackson for the worst collection of album covers ever. He didn't seem to be able to get even a nice image if his life depended on it. Only Off the Wall isn't hideous, but it isn't great either. Oh well, perhaps MJ and I had different tastes on the visual side of things.

Side-note: while typing this I actually listened to Music from the Penguin Cafe. A mostly fine album with some great, cool violin playing, although also somewhat inconsistent. A pleasant discovery nonetheless.

A really good list, Rob! Everybody's lists are great!

I can't resist to post these images from Lionel Richie's "Can't Slow Down" album. Here we get the relaxed Lionel, the serious Lionel and... the funny Lionel!

1 Image
Biffy Clyro
Puzzle (2007)

Never listened to the album. Sure it would be a disappointment.
Artwork by Storm Thorgerson. (see also Pink Floyd, Muse, the Mars Volta, etc)

2 Image
Brand New
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me (2006)

All about the composition.

3 Image
The Clash
London Calling (1979)

Photographer Pennie Smith took the defining photo of rock and roll.

4 Image
The Cars
The Cars (1978)

Candy-O was pretty awesome, too.

5 Image
The Killers
Sawdust (2007) [Compilation]

6 Image
The Band
The Last Waltz (1978)

This image was also a movie poster of course, but this is textbook graphic arts; minimal elements, each essential.

7 Image
Sleigh Bells
Reign of Terror (2012)

8 Image
The Flaming Lips
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)

You have looked at the cover. You no longer need to listen to the title track; the story is completely elucidated. I would still recommend listening to the title track.

9 Image
Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam (2006)

10 Image
Carly Simon
Boys in the Trees (1978)

I tried to avoid photos of the artist, but all of Carly Simon's covers were brilliant photos.

11 Image
Joe Jackson
Look Sharp! (1979)

12 Image
Supertramp
Even in the Quietest Moments... (1977)

I looked at four of their covers for inclusion, possibly the best covers career of all time.

13 Image
Lisa Loeb
Firecracker (1997)

I'm in love.

14 Image
The New Division
Together We Shine (2014)

Newest cover on the list. Yes it's a naked woman, but it is the shining that attracts your eye, not the girl.

15 Image
Billy Talent
Billy Talent III (2009)

Great graphic elements. Crappy band.

16 Image
Björk
Vespertine (2001)

Really, pick any Björk cover.

This album stood out in 1972, which says something.

34 Image
The Oscar Peterson Trio
Night Train (1963)

Oldest cover on the list, although I considered "In the Wee Small Hours". I can't find the source of the cover image, can someone help me out?

35 Image
Linda Ronstadt
Simple Dreams (1977).

Third watercolour of the artist on this list. I must like watercolours.

36 Image

I can't say for certain what will be number one on my list, but I will say that this has a spot reserved

I'm going to eliminate my own #24, Cut Copy's Zonoscope, a cover I always liked:

I probably liked it almost as much thirty five years ago:

when the Climax Blues Band used it for "Flying the Flag." But then, experienced AM'ers probably knew that already.

Repurposing great art for an album cover is one thing, but repurposing an album cover? Graphically, the Zonoscope cover is an improvement, perhaps.

I agree - partially because I'd like some more lists to get a better spread and partially because I haven't completely organized my own list.

The new deadline will be a week later, on July 22nd. Sorry for the delay! And thank you all for your lists. I can tell that people have put an enormous amount of thought into these and I've particularly enjoyed reading people's rationales for why they enjoy specific covers so much.

Sorry about not responding quicker! My brother graduated from college yesterday and I've had extended family in town for the past week, so my free time to work on this poll has been limited. I'll be able to start rolling out results by this Saturday.
