"Boxer" is great and all, but I strongly prefer "High a Violet". That run of songs from "Bloodbuzz Ohio", "Lemonworld", "Runaway", and "Conversation 16" just cannot be beat.
"Afraid of Everyone" is my favorite track by the band. I think Boxer starts off masterfully with the trifecta of "Fake Empire," "Mistaken for Strangers," and "Brainy," and it ends nicely with the last three tracks, but it kind of hits a lull for me in the middle. Anyway, I'm glad to see all three albums already on the site rise in this update, as well as a great placing for Trouble Will Find Me, my second favorite of theirs.

My favorite National song is "Slow Show", so I'm not sure about the lull in the middle.

For me:

High Violet (9.6/10) > Boxer (9.2/10) > Alligator (9.0/10) > Trouble Will Find Me (8.4/10)

I'm really dismayed to see Reflektor as the worst Arcade Fire album, and also seeing Neon Bible jump back up the rankings. I was very comfortable with Neon Bible dropping out of the top 500 to make way for better albums. That album to me typifies a highly acclaimed artist getting a free pass.

I'm also disappointed about Reflektor's ranking. While this may not be a common opinion, Reflektor is my favorite of their albums. It's actually in my top ten all time. I think it has a good chance of becoming their second best album assuming they don't release anything better for the rest of this decade.

And, while I don't feel quite as strongly about Neon Bible being overrated, I definitely didn't expect it to rise in the rankings, nor did I feel its rise was warranted.

It looks like "Baba O'Riley" might have the highest rise into the top 500 songs (from just outside the top 500 to #239) :music-listening:

Neon Bible and The Suburbs still felt in the shadow of Funeral to me. Reflektor is such a departure, and I think it should be celebrated for that.

More than position changes it's great to see so many more songs ranked. The old list with 3000 plus extras was missing lots of very significant songs but now they have been filled in. It's also good to see so many more pre-1940s things now.

Again, I'm surprised that "Runaway" is now Kanye's highest ranked song... I mean, I love it dearly, but I always figured "Jesus Walks" would have a monopoly on that slot :happy-partydance:

Wow, weird how almost every song of the 50s in the top 1000 dropped in this update.

Not really. At this point many rock critics see 50s music as a necessary evil as part of rock, or they just ignore the 50s totally and consider the Beach Boys/Dylan/Beatles as the real start of rock. Much the way that the young guys around here complain about me always talking about 50s music, most younger critics don't really like very much from then, so they don't end up including much of it on all time lists.

If you're 50 years old today you were not even born yet in the 1950s.

kargetina wrote:Hello guys, big fan of this site for a long time here and this update finally provoked me enough to become a member of the forums. :D

One thing that really bothered me the previous years and has bothered me even more is the huge bias towards new releases. For example,it's ridiculous to see My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in the top 100 when it only has made 10 all time lists...most of the ''points' it has,is from ranking high in the end-of-year lists of 2010.

On the other hand you have Pearl Jam's 10 which is on 57 all time lists but since there were a lot fewer ''best of the year'' sources due to the lack of internet,it's placed at 147.

This way, there is no actual cannon and if there is it's way too easy to enter it...there are 18 releases from the 00' that are in the top 200.

My recommendation for next year is to try emulate what TSPDT does for films...end-of-year lists have no impact on the top 1000 but they do on the ''best of the 21 century'' list. It's absolutely necessary to distinguish those two things because as shown above MTDF is by no means more acclaimed than Ten and there are countless other examples like that.

12 Years a Slave was the most acclaimed film last year,by a wide margin, and yet it didn't even enter the top 1000 let alone placing in the top 100.

On the other end of the spectrum,Frank Ocean's Channel Orange is on the 99-th place even though it was released two years ago and only appears on 4 ''all time best'' lists. It's in no way, shape or form the 99-th most acclaimed album of all time. Not even a mile close.

I really appreciate the hard effort to compile these lists but it's really disappointing to see such an arbitrary way of ranking the albums.
Way back before I even had this username, before there WERE usernames and we could still post replies with any name, I actually started a thread making the same point as you. You will probably get a lot of disagreement here, as I did back then, but I just want you to know that you have at least one person here on your side.

Henrik and others will swear that end of year lists don't trump all time lists and that the algorithm is fair. No matter what we tell them or what examples we mention, they will claim that the formula takes the point you're making into account. But I think, as you do, that that clearly isn't the case. If EOY lists weren't given too much weight, then why would CHannel Orange and MBDTF be in the top 100? I too believe that it is far too soon to consider any 2010s album as a top 100 of ALL TIME. To make such a statement about any work of art, I believe the "test of time" needs to be taken into consideration. Saying that something is one of the top 100 greatest of all time is a big, big statement. Any work of art would need to be competing with the established classics, and rightfully so. I believe that Henrik's formula still makes it too easy for newer albums to garner too-high rankings. You pointed out They Shoot Pictures and, like you, I agree with their algorithm or methodology more.

However, there are those, including Henrik, who will come back with an argument of their own, which isn't a bad one. They will say that as long as a list exists from an eligible source, it should be used. They will say that lists shouldn't be picked and chosen, whether they be yearly or decade or all time, all lists should be included. And I can understand that point of view. If we choose not to include EOY lists, then we are basically saying that such lists "don't matter." But they do of course! They are still valid lists. So I would suggest to Henrik not to delete EOY lists completely, but simply to give them lesser weight, so that an album that has made it to barely any all-time or decade lists can't suddenly jump into the top 200. Channel Orange wasn't on ANY all-time or decade lists, yet it was in the top 150 on last year's update, and I think that's ridiculous. So I would suggest tweaking the formula a little more and giving EOY lists a bit less weight. In my perfect vision for this site, no album from the previous year would be able to enter the list straight into the top 200. The top 200 would be tougher to get into, and would require at least a few all-time/decade lists.

All complaining aside, I still love this site and appreciate all of Henrik's work. Thank you (again) for a great update, Henrik!

I agree with this 100%. More weight should be given to albums or songs that have been on all time lists for decades and have stood the test of time. For instance, if this was 1975 "Color My World" by Chicago would be one of the top classic rock songs of all time, but nowadays is largely forgotten. I graduated high school in 1975 and in 1973 "Color My World" was the second most popular song (after Stairway To Heaven) in my high school (#1 with the girls). I know this because I surveyed the entire school as a class project. "Color My World" is not listed on the AM site at all. Chicago was highly regarded back then, but nowadays they are scorned by most critics.

Re: Neon Bible - It's my favorite AF album. Go it!

I'm enjoying going through the update. My top 2, Bjork and The White Stripes, have fared well in the album department, all albums are up. Good to see 7NA in the top 50 (though Get Lucky is higher, wut? booo!)

A few surprises. "Teen Spirit" WILL take #1 eventually. Mark my words!

I think newer artists benefited more, but Daft Punk in the Top 50 with the song of the Decade so far (a title I wouldn't dispute too hard) I saw coming.

I'm actually still in the mood for another Unacclaimed with the new update. Better get on that!

I completely disagree, you can not look at the sheer number of appearances, you have to look more in a %age way.
Saying that Ten is more acclaimed because he appeared in more all time lists is like saying that a 18 year old guy is a better student than a 6 year old one because he got more As in his life.
The way you put it, you have to take out the decade lists, because that's as biased as the EOY ones since there too you don't have the same amount in every decades, that would already make the number of Ten showings drop but that's not my point.

If you only look at all time lists made after the release of MBDTF, EW included only Kanye, Rolling Stone included both (with Pearl Jam higher), NME both (but with Kanye much higher) and we have 2 Australian lists including Kanye and not Pearl Jam, so I would say MBDTF is indeed more acclaimed than Ten.
I can understand that for a 4 year old album you find that a problem, but when you include all the 00s, those albums have faced the test of time (a shorter one, sure) already.
And I also agree that can be an issue lower on the list, with albums who really only have EOY lists behind them, but for those few top 200 albums, data back them up heavily.

Nobody complains about you talking about 50s music, it's actually a thing a lot of us enjoy coming from Honorio, Nicolas, Henry or others, we complain about you being a rude person, using fallacious and inconsistent argumentation to defend your opinion, posing it as a definitive truth and insulting on a regular basis music lot of us care for, without even having listened to it or even heard of it.

Good morning!

Thanks for all the thanks! It really warms my heart to see such an interest and enjoyment in the work behind the update.

About the formula, and that recent albums can be in the all-time top 100, you are right I will defend it! ;) PlasticRam and Nassim said most of the things I want to say, but I will add this:

Rather than seeing the AM lists as a summary of acclaim over all years, I see them as a measure of acclaim of the albums' lifetimes.

As it is, eoy lists ARE weighted much lower that all-time lists. And if they had been weighted higher that would basically just have changed the order of "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and "Channel Orange", and left older albums unaffected as there were no or only a few EOY lists from those years. The reason why "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and "Channel Orange" are in the top 100 is that albums of the 10s have had pretty good showings in the most recent all-time lists, and that these two albums are the "cream of the crop" of the decade so far.

In fact, there is a score reduction for albums with a smaller total weight (=newer albums), as their data are less reliable. But if the trend holds, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and "Channel Orange" are more likely to appear on coming all-time lists than for example "Ten". And for that I think their positions are deserved.

But welcome to the forum kargetina! Hopefully we can agree to disagree about the algorithm.

That's a good point.

EDIT: But that still leaves the lingering complaint that Channel Orange was in the top 150 last year without being on ANY non-EOY lists. 150 all time is pretty lofty and I believe an album should at least be on more than just EOY lists to be ranked so high. It was because of Channel Orange that I realized I disagreed with the weighting you used.

Hello Henrik and, or course, a huge thank you for this Sisyphean job. Again and again, year after year, you make us the happiest guys in the earth ;-)

I found the new lists better than the previous ones. Happy for some change, sad for some other. I think what make me the happiest is the climb of Life on Mars? by Bowie.

I was waiting for this comment. Yes, jazz takes a big hit with this update. There are two reasons for this:

1. There are no jazz genrelists included in this update. And the other lists don't include much jazz albums.

2. I have reduced the weight for ratings, and jazz albums generally have strong ratings but only a few list appearances. I think the ratings might have been weighted too high in the previous updates, given that it's usually only one person's opinion behind each rating. Moreover, if I will ever manage to increase the albums list to 4000 or 5000 albums, and make sure I haven't missed any albums, the weight of the ratings will have to go down. It is an almost impossible task to include all albums with high ratings and no list appearances in AM's source sheets.

189 albums are leaving the AM3000, here are the top 10 drops :

Henry Red Allen - World on a String (2398)
Hank Williams, Jr. - Hank Williams Jr. & Friends (2445)
Eric Dolphy - Iron Man (2480)
The Original Broadway Cast - My Fair Lady (2483)
Milt Jackson - Bags & Trane (2501)
Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance (2503)
Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing Eye (2504)
Lonnie Johnson - Blues and Ballads (2523)
Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue (2524)
Eric Dolphy - Outward Bound (2525)

Good thing is I now have heard about 45 albums more than in the previous AM3000, I should get to 1000 hopefully.
Souvlaki not in AM3000 was one of the strangest omission, this is now corrected ! (and happy to see Boris - Pink back too, there aren't a lot of Japanese albums in AM after all)

Nice update for my fav indie artists by the way : Built to Spill puts 3 albums in the top 1000 (though the best one is ranked the lowest), Elliott Smith sees his 4 ranked albums climbing steadily (not enough for XO to enter top 500 unfortunately), Yo La Tengo adds 2 albums in AM and has 4 other climbing up, so does Modest Mouse who also have a nice bump to its 3 most acclaimed albums earning them a top 200 spot on the artists list, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain enters AM200, Illinois the top 100, The Age of Adz the top 1000...
Only Low isn't doing as well, but they still get one more album in the top 3000

Very surprised and disappointed to see Steely Dan drop like a stone from 71 to 115. When you look at some of the acts that are above them this adds to the dismay as far as I am concerned. No one will ever convince me they are now only regarded ax the 115th best popular music act of all time, especially when the likes of Rolling Stone magazine had Becker and Fagen in its top ten songwriter team list of all time.

Here are the "scores" for the top 25 albums and songs, to give you an idea of which albums/songs that have a good chance to advance in coming updates.

Albums

9829 1. The Beatles - Revolver
9818 2. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
9812 3. Nirvana - Nevermind
9793 4. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
9776 5. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
9739 6. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
9728 7. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St.
9717 8. The Clash - London Calling
9716 9. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
9674 10. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks - Here's the Sex Pistols
9665 11. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
9637 12. Radiohead - OK Computer
9548 13. Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
9539 14. The Beatles - The Beatles ("White Album")
9500 15. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
9392 16. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
9363 17. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
9296 18. The Beatles - Abbey Road
9287 19. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
9278 20. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
9242 21. Patti Smith - Horses
9222 22. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
9216 23. Television - Marquee Moon
9178 24. Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
9132 25. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

Songs

9874 1. Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
9804 2. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
9700 3. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
9662 4. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
9651 5. The Beatles - A Day in the Life
9482 6. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine
9391 7. Aretha Franklin - Respect
9339 8. The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever
9335 9. The Ronettes - Be My Baby
9292 10. Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
9275 11. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
9259 12. Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay
9207 13. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
9158 14. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
9158 15. The Who - My Generation
9132 16. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
9100 17. Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel
9095 18. The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
9059 19. Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the U.K.
8977 20. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
8950 21. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
8918 22. The Clash - London Calling
8856 23. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five - The Message
8814 24. Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen
8773 25. Ike and Tina Turner - River Deep - Mountain High

As you can see, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is closer to "Like a Rolling Stone" than "Good Vibrations". However, the scale is such that the benefit of a top spot in a new critics' list is smaller the closer you get to 10,000.
There's a jump from #5 to #6 in the songs list. "A Day in the Life" has made a major step towards the top in each of the last three updates. It seems much more likely that it will climb further than that it will drop in coming updates.

There used to be a jump from 10th to 11th place in the albums list, but "Never Mind the Bollocks'" place in the top 10 is now threatened.
Not really any big jumps in the albums list, except between #15 and #16. The top 3 is really close!

The overall lower spread in the albums list doesn't mean that there will be a higher turnover in the future, compared to the songs list. There are more albums lists than songs lists behind these lists, and the lower spread can rather be seen as the album ranking has been settled to a higher degree.

The biggest drop among the top 3000 is Jackson Browne's Late for the Sky from #1630 to #2959.

Not sure if I missed it explained earlier, but did female acts get the different weighting that had been discussed? It looks like that may be the case, and, if so, that's not a bad thing. :)

This is prolly not the right thread to ask about this, but why isn't the Rolling Stone debut albums list not included? It actually could have been included in the 2013 update, but either it was forgotten or there was a reason. Prolly latter, I'm just checking.

It doesn't work that way. There's always the same maximum value and the values go down just as much as up between the updates.

Debut albums lists are more time-consuming to add, because out of all albums I need to know which ones were debut albums.

Female acts do not have a different weighting, but lists with a good representation of female acts are generally somewhat awarded for that. That is nothing new for this update though.

Mini-rant about TSPDT: the site drives me a bit nuts with their methodology. If it hadn't been for the latest Sight & Sound poll, the only movie from the last 25 years that was scraping the bottom of the top 100 was 1990's Goodfellas. There's no equivalent for that on AM (except for maybe busting into the all-time top 20 albums/songs, which isn't easy, not that it should be). One of my favorite parts on their site was "Nobody's Blues But My Own," but it looks like it's gone now.

Very dismayed to see Steely Dan drop like a stone from 72 to 115. No one will ever convince me that they are only the 115 best popular music act of all time when the likes of Rolling Stone magazine has Becker and Fagen down as one of the all time great songwriting teams or that artists like the stone roses and their one album are a better act. What a joke !

Gotcha, Henrik. Thanks.

peteevans- Henrik has said that the artist ranks shouldn't be taken as gospel. I think it only takes into account an act's top nine songs (not sure about albums). But, it does give a good idea of an act's reverence.

Thanks for reminding me about the way the artist ranking is calculated. I changed it so that it now takes the top 15 albums and top 15 songs into account, with a constant decrease in weight.

15*album1+14*album2+13*album3+...+2*album14+1*album15 + 15*song1+14*song2+13*song3+...+2*song14 + 1*song15

where album1, album2,..., song1, song2, etc. = ln(ln(10+alltime place))

For albums not in the top 3000, the value 3011 was assigned.
For songs not in the top 6000, the value 6011 was assigned.
I have no idea why I chose the +011...

Yeah, it's very complicated. Especially for a ranking that shouldn't be taken as gospel

Agreed. The idea of the Arctic Monkeys being listed over Steely Dan is laughable. One is a flash in the pan, who after 7 years just finally made their second well received album. The other is one of the best album bands of the 70s.

The following artists to me took hits in ranking that are unrepresentative of their place in music history/ their level of respect:

Sonic Youth- One of the true institutions of American Indie Rock, almost mythic in status.

Tom Waits- One of America's finest songwriters, a steady force in acclaim for over 40 years, and a veritable institution since the release of Swordfishtrombones.

Joni Mitchell- Arguably the finest female singer-songwriter ever, and often argued to be the finest Canadian songwriter of all time (though I prefer Neil Young.)

Wilco- Other than maybe Radiohead, I consider them the most consistent album band of the last 20 years. If they release a new album, it's going to be in the top 20 of the year, and many of them wind up in the top 10. A top 50 album band of all time.

Pavement- Maybe this is due to me being American, but Pavement is absolute royalty. The hyperbole of "Best band of the 90s" is often applied to them, even in the face of Radiohead and Nirvana. I realize they're not nearly as popular abroad but seeing them outside of the top 100 of all time makes me wince.

Steely Dan- For the aforementioned reasons.

Brian Eno- One of the foremost sonic innovators in 20th century popular music, with a great run of albums to boot.

Husker Du- One of the finest American Punk bands of the 1980s. No Husker Du? No Pixies and No Nirvana. Also has a rare run of 5 acclaimed albums.

There are so many more: Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, all ranked below Phoenix? It's just not representative of any sort of real world opinion on music. It may cater to certain tastes, but no honest individual is going to say that Phoenix is more legendary than Frank Zappa? Kanye West or Arcade Fire? I can understand. Those two are basically at the point of legitimate canonization. But this update resulted in many 2nd and 3rd tier indie rock acts outranking legends, based on one-two hot albums and a handful of well performing singles.

I hope next update the skew won't be so much on singles, and will return to celebrating what I consider the true watermark of musical genius. A great album.

Great to see these additions to the top 100:

“Gimme Shelter” (#43)
“Get Lucky” (#46)
“All Along the Watchtower” (#70)
“99 Problems” (#76)
“California Dreamin’” (#85)
“Paranoid Android” (#97)

Not surprised that these songs dropped out:
“Summertime Blues” (#103 – 28 Places)
“Blue Suede Shoes” (#105 – 16 Places)
“Maybellene” (#107 – 24 Places)
“That’s All Right (#114 – 32 Places)
“No Woman No Cry” (#121 – 33 Places)
“Mystery Train” (#126 – 50 Places)
“Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” (#130 – 53 Places)
“Walk On By” (#146 – 61 Places)
“Be-Bop-a-Lula” (#163 – 65 Places)

Bummer :-(
“Maggie May” (#104 – 14 Places)
“Every Breath You Take” (#106 – 12 Places)
“Eight Miles High” (#108 – 21 Places)
“Honky Tonk Women” (#112 – 16 Places)
“Yesterday” (#116 – 17 Places) - tough to see this one drop out
“Won’t Get Fooled Again (#122 – 31 Places) - tough to see this one drop out
“Oh, Pretty Woman” (#129 – 37 Places)

It appears that no song released after 1983 dropped out of the top 100. This seems a bit odd to me.

Jonathan, I have to agree with you completely. There are several issues I have with this web site that lead me to be of the opinion that it is totally flawed, whilst no one would disagree that it has been very well put together and a massive amount of work has gone into it.

Singles should no way be included as part of an artists ranking. Only the album confirms consistent excellence. Because of the weighting given to singles we get the likes of the Sex Pistols flying high in the chart on the strength of one album ! Or rather, one album with three or four great songs on it and the rest utter drivel.

Secondly, no weighting is given to artists as a whole, i.e. lists of who are regarded as the all time greats of popular music. That being the case then surely there is no need to have an all time great artists list. Just have the top albums and the top singles.

I can agree that weighting is given based on critical acclaim and votes for albums only. However, the problem is that if you drill down and look at the nature of these so called 'critics lists' they are completely skewed in favour of certain types of artist and are controlled by young critics, e.g. NME, Q magazine, Spin, etc, etc, with very little knowledge or experience of a broad history of popular music of all kinds, unlike the older established journals like Rolling Stone, Mojo, Uncut, Village Voice, All Music Guide, etc. Look at the recent example of the NME top 500 albums of all time. It was a complete and utter joke. Why ? Well it was voted for by so called experienced critics who in reality are barely out of nappies !

To me, why bother saying not to take the artists list seriously at all ? What is the point in doing it if it is completely unrepresentative of the general views of artists held by proper critics who have the experience and knowledge of the industry. There is no musician representation either, which is another major flaw.

Hence we get young critics with little musical knowledge proclaiming certain acts based on their very limited knowledge as all time greats of popular music, which is utter nonsense.

Opposite. Only songs should count. They are counted double when t he album they are on is also counted. And before the late 60s albums did not matter much. Albums did not even exist really until the mid-1950s. If we listened to you acts like Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington would be nowhere to be found.

The artist ranking is simply a summary of the positions of the artists' most acclaimed albums and songs. Other aspects (e.g. live performances) are not counted for, so this artist ranking should not be taken too seriously.

If you think albums are more important than songs, or vice versa, you can use the top 200 artist pages, based on albums or songs alone.
