First ten album gap game for the new update

Post by Jirin »

We do this every time the AM list is updated. Basically you go down the list and find the first gap of ten albums you've never heard.

Looks like the new update's injection of newer albums has pushed my first ten album gap a couple hundred places further down. Last time I think it was in the 900s for me.

1387 Nick Lowe - Jesus Of Cool/Pure Pop For Now People
1388 Shelby Lynne - I Am Shelby Lynne
1389 Hank Mobley - Soul station
1390 Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II
1391 The Disposable Heroes O Hiphocrisy - Hipocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury
1392 Napalm Death - Scum
1393 Diana Ross - Diana
1394 Bill Callahan - Dream River
1395 James Brown - The Payback
1396 Muddy Waters - Folk Singer

It looks like the first ten for me is:
401. James Brown - Sex Machine
402. Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto [featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim]
403. Aerosmith - Rocks
404. Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
405. Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch!
406. Miles Davis - Classics in Jazz/Birth of the Cool
407. Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous
408. Grateful Dead - Live/Dead
409. Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
410. Beastie Boys - Check Your Head

I'm going to assume part of the game is to listen to all of these and return with comments, so hopefully I'll be able to do that soon. My friend will be happy I'm listening to a lot of Aerosmith.

That's one hell of a run (though I'm not familiar with Captain Beefheart).

Unless I missed something, this is mine:
1375. Jean Michel Jarre-Oxygène
1376. William Basinski-The Disintegration Loops
1377. Paul McCartney-Ram
1378. Super Furry Animals-Radiator
1379. This Mortal Coil-It'll End in Tears
1380. Matthew Sweet-Girlfriend
1381. Terry Riley-A Rainbow in Curved Air
1382. M83-Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts
1383. Einstürzende Neubauten-Kollaps
1384. Los Lobos-Kiko

I've been meaning to get to The Disintegration Loops for a while, but then I forgot the name for the longest time.

391 Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
392 Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
393 Creedence Clearwater Revival - Willy and the Poor Boys
394 Deep Purple - Deep Purple in Rock
395 John Coltrane - Giant Steps
396 Richard and Linda Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights
397 Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
398 Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come
399 Elvis Costello and The Attractions - Armed Forces
400 Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden

Was expecting this to fall somewhere in the 200's. Guess I've heard more albums than I thought. Lots of jazz that I'm excited to get into in this group, plus more CCR! :music-rockon:

I have listened to 843 albums in the AM3000 so far (I am only counting those I am sure I have listened from start to finish, there are about 10 I don't really know if I made it to the end and somewhere around 200 I listened to more than halfway through but did not make it to the end whether it is because I was interrupted or disliked it too much)

My first 10 album gap is actually a 13 album gap from 1188 to 1200 :

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands
John Coltrane - John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
Fred Neil - Fred Neil/Everybody's Talkin'
Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation 1814
Chuck Berry - St. Louis to Liverpool
Wild Beasts - Smother
Chuck Berry - Chuck Berry Is On Top
Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence
Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
Santana - Santana
Public Enemy - Apocalypse '91 - The Enemy Strikes Black
Tito Puente - Dance Mania
Etta James - At Last!

I liked Two Dancers but I don't think I listened to Smother in its entirety.

Much further down the list, my longest gap is a 42 album gap.

Here's mine:

523 Suede - Suede

I may have listened to Hejira, Dire Straits, Two Steps, Village Vanguard and Behaviour in the past, but I have absolutely no memory of them. Besides, I have some pretty big holes before my first ten album gap as well.

Currently my run is from 326-335 (Mezzanine to Love and Theft), but Aja is in there, and I'm going to listen to that one for the 1977 poll next month, so with that in mind, my new streak will be 653-662 (Futre Days to It's Too Late To Stop Now).

That's strange but pretty cool. We should both listen to them and compare notes.:music-listening:

I really like these four:
769 The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle Be Unbroken
770 Johnny Cash - American III: Solitary Man
774 The Horrors - Primary Colours
777 Elliott Smith - Figure 8

The first one is pretty long but worth it. Primary Colours should be higher, as should everything The Horrors has done. I'm surprised "Still Life" off their album Skying isn't considered a modern classic.

I also love how we have two pairs of matching lists in this topic. That seems highly unlikely.

Actually the odds favor that two of us will have the same gap.

How many people in a room before it is more than 50% likely that at least two of them share the same birthday? About 21. It's the same here, only maybe 1000 days in a year to extend the comparison, so more like 30-40.

This might be true if we were talking about random distribution, but in fact this is self-selected distribution. You have chosen what to listen to in the past, hence the albums outside your series of ten are also relevant. Both KingofTonga and Nick are bracketed by Gorrilaz' Demon Days and the Spoon's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga; they're both in a demographic that would be highly unlikely not to have heard Demon Days. So their series is more likely to begin with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Although I concur, you both need to listen to Primary Colors.

Actually wouldn't the number of "days" be closer to 3000? The list of possible ten albums gaps should look something like this-

1. 1-10
2. 2-11
3. 3-12
.
.
.
2989. 2989-2998
2990. 2990-2999
2991. 2991-3000

EDIT: Just ran the numbers in Wolfram Alpha. Looks like it would take roughly 65 people for there to be a 50% chance that two of us would have the same album gap. That's a lot less than I expected!

That's if you assume the distribution is equal throughout the list. So far nobody has gone past 1400 and only a handful of forum members (Harold, Henrik, Stephan, etc) probably would.

Very good point, not to mention the point that DocBrown brought up earlier. I guess it's even LESS than 65!
