Bracketology 3: Round 1, Week 2

Post by Listyguy »

Week 1 saw a ridiculous turnout for voters (36!), so hopefully we can keep that up this week.

So here's how the game works: You will be given four brackets with four songs each. Your job is to rank the songs in each bracket from 1-4. You #1 song will be given 4 points, #2 will be given 3, and so on. The winner of each bracket advances to the next round. In the event of tie, whichever song gets more first place votes will advance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This poll will close next Sunday at midnight forum time.

Here are the new brackets:

55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)

57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)

36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)
221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)

63. Beach House - Myth (2012)
66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)

I don't know if this helps anyone, but here it is anyway.

I ranked all 16 of the songs overall, which is what the number to the left represents. "Retrograde" had a real easy pack for me, while it was hard to decide between Fade Into You and Bloodbuzz Ohio.

3. Fade into You
4. Bloodbuzz Ohio
9. Head Like a Hole
14. Lean on Me

1. Retrograde
11. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
13. Open Up
16. Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud

2. Hallelujah
7. Everything in Its Right Place
10. Bro's
15. Raspberry Beret

5. The Rip
6. Myth
8. L.A. Woman
12. Paradise City

183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)

Easy pick for #1 here. The National thing started out okay until he started (I guess you can loosely call it) singing. Fade Into You is pretty good, kinda dreamy. Head Like A Hole is an excellent example of the modern sounding percussion that I can't stand.

72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)

Top 2 were easy. James Blake has a very good Aaron Neville like voice but the song is boring. Open Up would be a decent instrumental but once the singing starts it's awful.

221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)
36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)

Not a huge fan of Rasp. Beret but it's easily the best item here. Don't like the Buckley at all and absolutely detest the Radiohead thing. Panda Bear was surprisingly good. I hear a Beach Boys influence.

191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)
66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
63. Beach House - Myth (2012)

The best song of the 16 is the Doors record. The G&R is good enough old style stadium rock. The Portishead was not as bad as I expected. The Myth is putrid.

55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)
183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)

One of my top ten all time favourites, followed by a top 100 favourite, followed by a solid NIN track, followed by a really okay track.

57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)
72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)

Toughest choice of the week at the top. Never got the hardest workin' man in show business at the bottom.

93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)
221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)

I really, really hate the Jeff Buckley Hallelujah, although it is one of my favourite songs of all time. A good Prince song, but not good enough in this company.

63. Beach House - Myth (2012)
66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)

Exactly the order they arrived in.

183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)

I like the Withers song, but the others leave me cold.

72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)
57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)

This is a fairly strong group with the funkiest song winning out. I like Dylan, but "Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" is far less interesting than the other tracks. I much prefer Blake's second album to his debut, but "Retrograde" is only my fourth or so favorite song from it. "Open Up" is a striking track from a fairly pedestrian '90s electronic band and is good enough for second.

164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)
93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)

I loathe Jeff Buckley and in particular his sappy version of "Hallelujah" so no surprise it is at the bottom of this group. "Raspberry Beret" is solid, but not quite on par with the top two tracks. "Bro's" is one of my favorite tracks of the last several years and it easily edges out a very good track from Radiohead.

66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)
63. Beach House - Myth (2012)

Ugh, this group. "The Rip" is the only song here that I like, so Portishead without any hesitation. Although I dislike the Doors, I can at least tolerate them, which is more than I can say for the other two songs. I listen to every track before voting, even though I have already heard most all of them, but I hate Axl Rose's voice to such an extent that I cannot make it through "Paradise City." It beats out Beach House because I'll take the revulsion I feel toward GnR over the empty vanilla sounds of Beach House.

VERY surprised to see all Buckley's Hallelujah hate. I thought it was impossible to not love it...

It seems to be quite polarizing with several #1 votes and several #4 votes already.

What a group, the first three songs are the best of this week for me. ANd PAnda Bear song is great.

Thanks for that Spotify playlist, a great help!

55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)

I have been meaning to listen to The National for a while, this is a good start.

57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)

Retrograde runs away with this one.

93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)
221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)

+1 for a dis-interest in Hallelujah. The other three are great though!

66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
63. Beach House - Myth (2012)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)

Nope to GNR. Can't stand them.

What a first bracket, only NIN isn't my cup of tea, the other three songs are among my top 1000. Also awesome to see that the only Radiohead song I love is getting more love from critics.

1. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
2. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
3. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
4. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)

1. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
2. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
3. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
4. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)

1. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
2. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
3. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
4. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)

1. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)
2. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
3. Beach House - Myth (2012)
4. Portishead - The Rip (2008)

No big favorite of mine this week, I hope that doesn't mean they will all appear in the same brackets ^^

74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)
Have I told you I love 3/4 songs ? Fade into You, though not one of my very favorite, showcases pretty well what I love in them, the dizzying qualities of this rhythm.
Bloodbuzz Ohio is one more prove that the best National tracks are drums driven. And while I like some Nine inch Nails, Head Like a Hole doesn't do much to me.

57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)
72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
As I said, I like 3/4 songs, but Dylan has better one so Retrograde keeps the edge. The bottom 2 could go either way but while I do appreciate the cultural impact and importance of the James Brown song, it's still a good help in the claim that lazy and repetitive music is nothing new.

164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)
36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
Top 3 is a very close call.
Raspberry Beret is a case of "AM knew if before the critics", back during our first 80s poll it made a surprise appearance in our 1985 top 10, predicting a 600 places jump in the AM songs list.
Hallelujah probably suffers from tons of lazy uses in movies, bad covers in singing competitions and frat boys trying to score a girl.. it's still a quite touching song (and a 3/4 one so there's that too). Overrated ? Sure, but still pretty damn great.
Everything In Its Right Place is for me the opposite of a grower, the more I hear it the less appeal it has.

66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
63. Beach House - Myth (2012)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)
Easy choice for #1. The other 3 are from bands I usually don't enjoy, safe for a few songs. The Doors have the benefit of having one of those few songs I like in today's bracket...
I'll a bit lost with Beach House's acclaim, I pretty much only enjoy Norway and Zebra. Not much a fan of Guns N'Roses either, Sweet Child O'Mine or Welcome to the Jungle would have been 2nd here but that's about all.

202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)
183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
This ended up being a much stronger bracket than I expected. Although "Lean on Me" has fallen a lot with me lately due to overexposure, it still barely beats about one of the most impactful voices in music these days and a wonderful new discovery, respectively.

200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)
57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
Ok, I may have a bit of a soft spot for John Lydon...

36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)
I wish I could put Prince higher, but other than that, this bracket is pretty straightforward.

63. Beach House - Myth (2012)
66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
Second and Third place were rather close, but in the end, Portishead's lovely song beat out Guns N' Roses same old schtick.

This is a very strong week for me. There are only two songs I don't much cares for, and even these are at least tolerable.

183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)

I have a soft spot for Bill Withers, so he just beats out two very strong songs. I'm not a big fan of NIN, and this is not one of the few I enjoy by Reznor.

57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)
72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)

I love the songs by Blake and Dylan, and the Leftfield is okay. I've never been able to get into JB, especially when he sings about social issues.

36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)

This is an extremely strong group, but not much stands a chance against Buckley's Hallelujah for me. It's one of my favorite songs, and his version will always be the definitive one for me. This is followed by a very strong Radiohead track, one of the few Prince songs I love, and a very tasty Panda Bear.

66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)
63. Beach House - Myth (2012)
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)

This was the toughest bracket to rank for me, and also the most surprising. Portishead is a group I used to think I didn't like much, but keeps growing on me with every listen. This song in particular is becoming one of my favorites as a result of this poll. I know a song is really good when I start to feel sad as it gets towards the end of its runtime. The rest of this group is made up of lesser songs by groups I like. These three songs are almost interchangeable in the rankings for me.

Two songs this week are in my top 10.

Lean on Me
Bloodbuzz Ohio
Head Like a Hole
Fade Into You
Nothing excellent in this group, but "Lean On Me" is a clear winner for me.

A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Say It Loud-I'm Black and Proud
Retrograde
Open Up
"Hard Rain" is on of my 10 favorite songs of all time, and my second favorite Dylan song. I was expecting a better outcome for it than what I've seen so far. 2 and 3 were interchangeable for me, but the Godfather gets a slight edge.

Hallelujah
Everything In It's Right Place
Raspberry Beret
Bro's
"Hallelujah" is also one of my ten favorite songs of all time, and my favorite song of the 90's. "Everything In It's Right Place" is damn good as well.

LA Woman
The Rip
Paradise City
Myth
Again, nothing exceptional, but 3 solid songs.

55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)

Strong bracket, but easy to rank.

57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)
72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)

This week's weakest bracket.

93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)
36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)

I don't hate Hallelujah, but this is a strong bracket. Saving the hate for the last group.

66. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
63. Beach House - Myth (2012)
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)

Two great songs from great albums, a pretty ho-hum Doors track and almost 7 minutes of torture.

This 1st bracket is amazing... My #1 song of all-time another top 100 all-time song plus 2 great songs. I feel guilty having to rank Bill Withers #4 in this...

NIN - Head Like A Hole
Mazzy - Fade Into You
National - Bloodbuzz Ohio
Bill Withers - Lean On Me

Bloodbuzz or Lean On Me would have been #1 in this bracket...

JB - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud
Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Blake - Retrograde
Leftfield - Open Up

Prince win's this one easy...

Prince - Raspberry Beret
Radiohead - Everything In It's Right Place
Buckley - Hallelujah
Panda Bear - Bro's

GNR - Paradise City
Portishead - The Rip
Doors - L.A. Woman
Beach House - Myth

It's funny: at the beginning of this game, I wanted to implement the personal 1-10 rating scale I've been using for songs (mostly to help me with my album ratings over the past few years), but I knew that Bruce used a similar rating scale and I never wanted to risk comments that might veer the thread off track. I guess it's safe now. (The only number I actually use a + for is 7, since the hardest rating for me to give is when something falls between a 7 and 8. I can't even explain why.)

Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989) 8
Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993) 8
The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010) 7+
Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972) 7

James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968) 8
Leftfield - Open Up (1993) 8
James Blake - Retrograde (2013) 7+
Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963) 7+

Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985) 9
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994) 8
Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000) 7+
Panda Bear - Bro's (2006) 5

Portishead - The Rip (2008) 9
Beach House - Myth (2012) 8
The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971) 7
Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987) 5

I wish Grace was only Jeff Buckley's singing. I can't stand the noisy guitar here and there.

Sorry I missed Week 1! I've been CRAZY busy coordinating a course with over 1100 students. :scared-shocked:

202. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989): 8
74. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993): 8
55. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010): 7.5
183. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972): 6.5

The only one I wasn't that familiar with was "Bloodbuzz Ohio", which is quite nice, but not quite on the level of the raucous "Head Like a Hole" or the seductive "Fade Into You". As for "Lean on Me"... give me Club Nouveau!

72. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968): 8
57. James Blake - Retrograde (2013): 7.5
200. Leftfield - Open Up (1993): 7
185. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963): 3

James Brown takes the cake with panache! I quite liked the James Blake track, which was a bit surprising as I was unimpressed by his debut album. The Leftfield track is nice enough, but not that special. And Bob Dylan, well, this song just isn't my thing.

221. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985): 10
93. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000): 7
164. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006): 7
36. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994): 5

No surprise at my number 1. "Raspberry Beret" is tangy as rainbow sherbet. Close battle between Radiohead and Panda Bear, both of which are artists I should like more than I do. I've never found Jeff Buckley's music able to move me one way or another. :?

194. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987): 9.5
191. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971): 9.5
63. Beach House - Myth (2012): 8.5
66. Portishead - The Rip (2008): 8.5

Wow - the death group! 5 of my top 16 are in this group. "Paradise City" and "L.A. Woman" have been long favorites, the former my favorite GNR track by far, and the latter one of my top 5, dripping of sweaty summer lust. "Myth" is my favorite discovery so far - it's so achingly gorgeous! "The Rip" started off interesting enough, but once those synths came in, good Lawd!

The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)

Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
Leftfield - Open Up (1993)

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)

Portishead - The Rip (2008)
The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
Beach House - Myth (2012)
Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)

Best bracket in my opinion: #3 (despite the interminable Bro's)

A little over two days left to vote...and I highly recommend voting, because unlike last week, every vote is critical this week. In three brackets, the top three are separated by less than five points, and in the other bracket, the top two are separated by that same margin.

I don't really have time to add comments, but I'll try for some next week!

1. Nine Inch Nails- Head Like a Hole
2. The National- Bloodbuzz Ohio
3. Mazzy Star- Fade Into You
4. Bill Withers- Lean on Me

1. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
2. James Blake - Retrograde
3. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud
4. Leftfield - Open Up

1. Jeff Buckley- Hallelujah
2. Radiohead- Everything In Its Right Place
3. Prince- Raspberry Beret
4. Panda Bear- Bro's

1. Portishead- The Rip
2. Beach House- Myth

4. The Doors- L.A. Woman

The first 2 brackets were rather easy to rank, the last 2 were very, very tough.

1. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)
2. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
3. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)
4. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)

As much as I love #2, the Withers is a lifelong favorite of mine and just a beautiful, heartfelt song, so it gets the nod. That said, it’s been great to see The National get more and more accessible with each succeeding album without losing their identity, and “I still owe money to the money to the money I owe” is one of my favorite lines of all time.

1. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
2. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)
3. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
4. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)

Easiest #1 so far – to me, “Hard Rain” is one of the greatest songs ever written. The more I listen to Blake the more I get him and like him, and #2 is probably his best track.

1. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
2. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
3. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
4. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)

I guess I didn’t realize how polarizing Buckley is until reading the comments this week – I think his Cohen cover is a masterpiece and one of the highlights of a brilliant album. #3 is a magnificent pop trifle from a giant; it barely gets edged out by the perfect introduction to an innovative album. I can appreciate the hypnotic, accumulative power of “Bro’s” – to expand what I once said about Merriweather, listening to PB is like being inside of Brian Wilson’s brain on one of his good days – but it’s a very easy #4 in this company.

1. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)
2. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
3. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
4. Beach House - Myth (2012)

As often happened during the last iteration of Bracketology, my roots are showing here, with the two classic-rock epics towering over the two more recent tracks. It’s kind of a shame, because I do love “The Rip” – it may be my favorite track on Third. GN’R’s frantic collision of glam ‘n’ slam gets the nod over the Lizard King’s ode to the rising of his Mr. Mojo.

What an amazing bracketology we have this week!

3. Mazzy Star - Fade into You (1993)
8. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio (2010)
9. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (1989)
10. Bill Withers - Lean on Me (1972)

Fade Into You sounded vaguely familiar. I must have heard it somewhere before, but that didn't lessen the impact it had on me. I find it a deeply moving, extremely beautiful song. If it stands up to many listenings it might become a top 100 entry for sure for me. The National could have taken this poll any other time, because Bloodbuzz is great. Nine Inch Nails and Bill Withers close of this brilliant bracket with a great rocker and a smooth uplifting soul ballad. Hard to choose between them, but perhaps the mellow state of this bracket makes Head Like a Hole stand out a little bit more. This bracket is better then any of last week and it isn't even my favorite...

2. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
11. James Brown - Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (1968)
12. Leftfield - Open Up (1993)
15. James Blake - Retrograde (2013)

Dylan delivers what is perhaps the protest song with the most epic scope and an almost biblical feel, without the religious overtones. One of my favorite songs of his and a solid top 50 entry for some years now. Nothing was going to overtake him, but the others tried very well. James Brown delivers one of the most infectious songs of black pride ever. Dance music is hit and miss for me, but Open Up is very much hit. If James Blake's Retrograde seems one of the weakest entries of the week, it's far from a knock on his song, which I like very much.

1. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (1994)
13. Prince - Raspberry Beret (1985)
14. Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place (2000)
16. Panda Bear - Bro's (2006)

First off, Animal Collective is probably the acclaimed act I liked the least and sadly Panda Bear's Bro's reminds me again why. The frustrating mix of beautiful compositions ruined by cluttered productions that throws together several sound effects for no discernible reason just works on my nerves every time. You just notice the great song underneath, but those annoying tendencies to just make a mess out of it... Ugh, let's talks about something else.
Like Radiohead, who know how to do such an experimental production and making it make sense somehow. Not my favorite song of Kid A, but still very good. Raspberry Beret is a great pop song, simple and clear. But the true (and honestly, only) stand-out is Hallelujah, one of the most heartbreaking songs I know. Even in this amazing week it is remarkable. Interesting however, how dividing it is.

4. The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
5. Portishead - The Rip (2008)
6. Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (1987)
7. Beach House - Myth (2012)

All right, this isn't a game anymore, this is sadism. All these four songs aren't just great to my ears, but works of genius. I do not agree at all with the ranking I send in, but I couldn't think of a ranking that I agreed with, so we'll make do with it. Guns 'N Roses and The Doors deliver dirty rock perfection, while the two other bands show amazing grace. A special mention deserves The Rip. I never got around listening to Portishead's Third, but if this is song is any indication it shows they really deepened and expanded their sound, while still remaining recognizable.

Wow, what a wild week of brackets. Here are the results, with point total followed by first place votes:

1. The National – Bloodbuzz Ohio (83, 7)
2. Mazzy Star – Fade Into You (78, 7)
3. Bill Withers – Lean on Me (73, 10)
4. Nine Inch Nails – Head Like a Hole (56, 5)
The National held first place for most of the week, usually by a very slim margin. Bill Withers managed to get 3 more first place votes the “Bloodbuzz Ohio”, but fails to advance. The song will face three TBD’s.

1. Bob Dylan – A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall (80, 9)
2. James Blake – Retrograde (80, 8)
3. James Brown – Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud (76, 9)
4. Leftfield – Open Up (54, 3)
“Don’t call it a comeback”, but Bob Dylan somehow managed to win this bracket. Early on in the week James Blake looked like he would run away with it, but slowly but surely Dylan moved closer and ended up typing with “Retrograde” and finishing just 4 points ahead of “Say It Loud”. “Hard Rain” advances by having more first place votes and will face “New Slang” and two unknown songs in the next round.

1. Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (79, 12)
2. Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place (78, 5)
3. Prince – Raspberry Beret (76, 9)
4. Panda Bear – Bro’s (57, 3)
In what may have been the week’s closest bracket (in the one I thought would be a runaway), Jeff Buckley squeaks past Radiohead and Prince. Only 3 points separated the top three in this bracket. The song will learn who it’s opponents are in the coming weeks.

1. Portishead – The Rip (84, 12)
2. The Doors – L.A. Woman (78, 8)
3. Beach House – Myth (60, 4)
4. Guns N’ Roses – Paradise City (58, 4)
Last week, the closest race finished with 6 points of separation. This week, that’s the largest margin of victory, with Portishead gaining the most point of any song this week, taking down the Doors. No word on the songs it will face next round yet.

I only now got that only the number ones advances. I thought it were the top 2, like the unacclaimed game. This makes it a more though game. Sad we lose Mazzy Star so soon.
