Good ol contrarian NME... It is pretty funny to compare the previous lists in this same category at different moments in the publication's time actually. Still pretty shocking to see NME actually put Led Zeppelin on a top 100 but not Beatles, Dylan, or the Stones... The times they are a changin, indeed!

Radiohead and David Bowie at N°1 & 2, only 12 black-only acts in the top, nobody in the 60s EXCEPT the VU (unless I missed someone) and Led Zep...

I expect someone's rant in 3... 2... 1...

Yes I have Pierre. Thanks for those lists! I sent the guy that TV show list, and I am including that one game list in my huge set of documents. There are seriously way too many genre and console specific best lists in the video game list universe! I am assuming this JeuxVideo special is updated every month at this rate? They mention 1998 for the next video at the end of the 2005 video.

For reference sake, here is NME's 2000 list:

1. David Bowie
2. Radiohead
3. The Beatles
4. Public Enemy
5. Miles Davis
6. Kraftwerk
7. Sex Pistols
8. Eminem
9. Nick Drake
10. The Smiths
11. Stevie Wonder
12. Aphex Twin
13. Scott Walker
14. The Chemical Brothers
15. The Flaming Lips
16. Bob Dylan
17. Mos Def
18. The Velvet Underground
19. Beck
20. Joy Division

And from 2002:

1. The Smiths
2. The Beatles
3. The Stone Roses
4. David Bowie
5. Sex Pistols
6. Oasis
7. Radiohead
8. Paul Weller and The Jam
9. U2
10. Public Enemy
11. Shun Ryder And Bez
12. The Clash
13. Nirvana
14. Elvis Presley
15. Joy Division
16. Blur
17. The Strokes
18. The Rolling Stones
19. The Verve
20. Bob Marley
21. The Fall
22. Prodigy
23. Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground
24. REM
25. Frankie Goes To Hollywood
26. Dexys Midnight Runners
27. Beastie Boys
28. T Rex
29. The Jesus And Mary Chain
30. The Specials
31. Manic Street Preachers
32. Roxy Music
33. Pixies
34. Iggy Pop
35. Shane Macgowan
36. Primal Scream
37. Frank Sinatra
38. Bob Dylan
39. Blondie
40. Eminem
41. Boy George
42. Madonna
43. Marvin Gaye
44. Pulp
45. Michael Jackson
46. The Charlatans
47. Echo And The Bunnymen
48. The KLF
49. Neil Young
50. PJ Harvey

So, basically, this list is not to be taken too seriously. It is just for fun. NME even explicitly stated that the list would not include the established greats right on the cover itself (no Beatles, Dylan, Stones, Elvis, Beach Boys, Who...), this was an intentionally modern oriented list. It is a classically contrarian, anti-establishment list, the kind NME specializes in.

It's so absurd it's not worth commenting on.

There are some other 60s things, Zombies, Stooges, Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Dusty Springfield.

A priori, it should be a monthly rate now. It seems it was not the case for the first vid, but it's typical of JV.com, they launch several pilots to know if their audience would be interested in such concepts of regular chronicles, and pick the most popular. My favourite was "Crossed", which was an amateur critic of movies adapted/revolving around the video games milieu. This guy was extremely skilled and often hilarious, too bad he stopped doing it.

This is what I mean about magazines having an agenda.

I think it is the most influental artists on the new music they love. If that's called an agenda, then so be it.

And they are not even doing a good job with that. Does anybody believe that the Zombies are more influential on that music than the Beatles?

This list makes absolutely no sense to anyone. Odessey and Oracle by The Zombies is outstanding though, I'm starting the campaigning for the greatest albums poll :music-rockon: :music-listening: :happy-partydance: :angry-nono:  :D

I like almost all of the artists on this list, and even I'm entirely perplexed by it. What was NME trying to go for? A list of influential artists that doesn't include The Beatles, Dylan, Elvis, Hendrix, and The Who is just not relevant by an stretch of the imagination. If they were only focusing on the influence on new music, then why include Zombies and Led Zeppelin? If they were trying to be "different" from their earlier lists, then why still include so many from the earlier lists but skip arguably the biggest names? This is one of the worst lists I've ever seen.

It's trying too hard for sure. Why not just go for a list of the most influential artists of the last 20 years or so?
However, I don't know if the magazine itself mentions any criteria used for compiling this list?
