Bump! One day to go before I close the polls!

(Though I actually have compulsory jury service on Monday, so I will probably only get to the results on Monday evening).

1. Tom Waits - Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)
2. Al Stewart - Year of the Cat
3. Heart - Crazy On You
4. Boston - More Than a Feeling
5. Bob Dylan - Isis

7. Queen - Hotel California
8. Stevie Wonder - As
9. The Runaways - Cherry Bomb
10. Bob Dylan - One More Cup of Coffee
11. Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK
12. Max Romeo & the Upsetters - Chase the Devil
13. Electric Light Orchestra - Livin' Thing
14. Bernard Herrmann - Theme from "Taxi Driver"
15. Dillinger - Cocaine in My Brain

Bubbling Under:
- Queen - Somebody to Love
- Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop
- Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - American Girl
- Bob Dylan - Romance in Durango
- Vicky Sue Robinson - Turn the Beat Around
- Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do
- Ennio Morricone - Romanzo (from Novecento)

Another year apparently known as "minor", but doesn't deserve it. When I went through a playlist I made for the year based on the AM list and on selections from users here I noticed that it was mostly a very diverse year, more than other years. No style dominates, but every style that was popular during the seventies had at least one great song. Reggae stood out, however. Probably it's peak year.

Tom Traubert's Blues, Year of the Cat and Isis form a nice group. Three great, long songs about lost men in strange places.

Stevie Wonder completely nailed it. Waaaay more points than Born to Run with fewer votes.

Anyway, there's a bit of an issue with the songs list, and I'd like your feedback if possible. It revolves around the song "Roadrunner" by Jonathan Richman/Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers/The Modern Lovers.

I allowed for votes for Roadrunner in 1975, taking no account into the strange origins of the song. It had been penned in 1970 and saw its first performance by Jonathan Richman in 1972, being released as a single by the Modern Lovers in 1975 (as listed in AM). The album The Modern Lovers came out in 1976 obviously (finishing 6th in our poll).

But anyway the points are SERIOUSLY split between 1975 and 1976. There is no doubt in my mind that if everyone voted for Roadrunner for just one of the years (i.e. just 1975 or just 1976) it would easily sail through to our top 150. As it is, it doesn't qualify for either year.

I assume the only reason why those who voted for it in 1976 did so was out of ignorance of the fact that a single version of the song was released in 1975. What would be the best way to proceed?

Just to complicate matters further DocBrown just put "anarchy in the UK" at #2 on his 1977 list, so I'm hoping that this isn't missing the cut for 1976.

Oops! my bad. It was released as a single in 76. I never list single dates, but I usually remember to check them for this poll, which I overlooked this month... too busy.

Would it be a big deal to have a 151 songs list at the end of the year ? ;)

Sounds like a good compromise. After all "Roadrunner" isn't a 1976 song so it shouldn't knock a 1976 song out of the poll.

I was thinking of discussing this at some point before but I guess now's the time to do it.

[does some hasty research]

Right, I'm now convinced that the single version released in 1975 is a completely different take to the track that opens their 1976 self-titled album. 45cat shows that there was a single of it released in 1975 (credited to "Jonathan Richman"), and a YouTube search of that confirmed my suspicion that it was indeed a different track - a little slower, with more acoustic instruments and arguably a little more sloppy.

Some people may legitimately prefer that version (after all, it's essentially the same song), but for me it just doesn't pack the same punch that comes with the more electric take. So that's why I didn't vote for it in the 1975 poll, although it does sadden me that it won't go through.

I agree with this too, if there aren't any objections. So Roadrunner will go through as a 16th song from 1975! In the future, I'll try to PSA albums and songs that might have disputable release dates. But please, please do research yourself, because I cannot guarantee that I will notice any mistakes, and if I do notice the mistake, I cannot guarantee that I will let you correct it.

Anyway...

Song results!

1 | Sex Pistols | Anarchy in the U.K. | 375
2 | Eagles | Hotel California | 359
3 | ABBA | Dancing Queen | 304
4 | Boston | More Than a Feeling | 259
5 | Stevie Wonder | Sir Duke | 238
6 | Ramones | BLITZKRIEG BOP | 207
7 | Fleetwood Mac | Go Your Own Way | 183
8 | Fela Kuti | Zombie | 178
9 | Stevie Wonder | As | 174
10 | Tom Waits | Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen) | 140
11 | Al Stewart | Year Of The Cat | 108
12 | Steely Dan | Kid Charlemagne | 105
13 | Stevie Wonder | I Wish | 105
14 | David Bowie | Station To Station | 101
______________________________________________________________
15 | Junior Murvin | Police And Thieves | 100

Zorg, in your file Tom Traubert's Blues is ranked twice: once with and once without it's second title. It doesn't matter for the game, but if I'm correct it should have the sixth place.

Anyway, the album list has some nice suprises again, especially Oxygene, which is the type of album that hasn't done well up til now in this game. 5 albums aren't ranked in the AM top 15. In fact, the first one only shows up at 25. The highest ranked album absent here is Rocks by Aerosmith. In fact, despite the Ramones hard rock loosed out big time, with also Thin Lizzy and Kiss biting the dust, apparently in favor for music from other countries than the US and the UK.
On a personal note: I am unnerved by the fact that I now have to listen to a complete ABBA album :(

In songs, a very large part of the top 15 doesn't correspond with the AM top 15. Depending on whether Police and Thies gets in, it is 7 or 8. The largest number up til now, I believe. Kid Charlemange isn't even ranked as a bubbler, so it is the great victor. Great to see that even with 6000 songs and lord knows how many bubblers, there are still surprises like this possible. Surprised to see (Don't Fear) the Reaper not making it.
Personally, I'm mostly surprised by the strong showing of Year of the Cat. Thought that was a song that didn't stand a real chance.

Timmywing seconded. The single version from 1975 and the '76 album version are significantly different, with the latter being the best and most familiar one. The single sounds more like a demo and wouldn't have cracked my top 15 for 1975, so I stand by my vote for the album version in this year's poll. If had voted for it in the '75 poll just because it stood a better chance to qualify I would've felt like cheating.

Thanks, Rob. I will update it and reupload the file in a second. Pivot tables actually don't save as much time as I thought...
