U2 (VU will win among the AMers)
Radiohead
The Who (My initial call that Otis will win among the AMers, seems to be incorrect)

Surprisingly easy matchups, the only one I winced for slightly was the Radiohead/Heads one, but even that one was pretty comfortable.

Bob Dylan- If I had to choose one album by either of these guys I might choose Moondance. Bob Dylan's catalog wins by a landslide though.
Pink Floyd- I'm racking my brain here but I think along with the Beatles, they are the only bands who had two distinct eras where I'm a huge fan of both. The only other artists I can think of are Bowie, but I'm not a "huge" fan of anything outside his 69-72 era and Radiohead, where I used to be a huge fan of post OK Computer album but not so much anymore.
The Velvet Underground- Every tournament we do I have to begrudgingly vote for U2 because of the matchups until I finally get the "not even close" vote. Here's that vote.
Radiohead- Very tough choice here and it just came down to the best album and OK Computer wins over More Songs About Buildings and Food.
The Who- Gotta say, I think Otis Redding is a fantastic performer especially his performance at Monterey Pop, but I haven't heard anything that has ever wowed me on album. For some reason I just can't hear the energy of his live show in the studio. It's still good stuff, but I don't think it's bonafide classic.
Marvin Gaye- Some really good singles, but he gets an easy matchup in the round of 64 against one of my least favorite artists of the grunge era.
Stevie Wonder- I always though NIN sounded cool, but I never became a fan. I don't know if I've ever listened to one of their albums in full. Doesn't matter, Stevie would have beat all but 3 bands in this bracket. I think I've listened to Talking Book more than any other album in the past year. No, I don't think I have, I know I have and it's by a large margin.
Bruce Springsteen- I've warmed up to Bruce in the past couple years. I never could stand his voice, and I still have some issues with it, but once I got past it and listened to the full albums I grew to really like most of his music.

Re: UMT 2012: Round of 64 #1
Bob Dylan: 4 vs. Van Morrison: 11
The AM World Cup introduced me to some Van Morrison songs that I quite enjoy. What do you guys think might be a good album for me to explore first?
Neil Young: 6 vs. Pink Floyd: 1
Not a strong matchup. Neil Young wins by default over an artist I really don't like.
U2: 17 vs. The Velvet Underground: 18
Both of these artists drawf all 4 previous artists. If you asked me 5 years ago, this would have easily gone to U2, but I think I appreciate them much more on a song basis than on an album basis, while VU has 2 incredible albums and another good one.
Radiohead: 15 vs. Talking Heads: 18
I've grown to quite like Radiohead, but I think they'll peak around 120 or so in my artist list. I used to not really like Talking Heads, but Speaking in Tongues totally won me over. Then Remain in Light and Fear of Music followed suit and the rest is history.
The Who: 0 vs. Otis Redding: 16
It will disgust me to no end if the moribund The Who wins this. I have not heard anything even remotely noteworthy among the 20 or so songs I've heard of theirs, whereas Otis Redding is a true treasure.
Marvin Gaye: 13 vs. Pearl Jam: 5
Pearl Jam was one of many bands that made me flee the popular music scene of the 90s. I used to not really care for Marvin, but I'm coming around.
Stevie Wonder: 19 vs. Nine Inch Nails: 14
Stevie Wonder is easily my favorite artist this week. His music is edifying to me. Nine Inch Nails is quite good, but outclassed here.
Bruce Springsteen: 10 vs. The Smashing Pumpkins: 8
Not a strong matchup. "Dancing in the Dark" basically wins this for Bruce. I used to loathe The Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan's voice in particular, but I've warmed up a little bit to them over the years.

Bob Dylan (complicated choice, I love one album from both and can not get into much of their other output, I probably enjoy Astral Weeks a bit more than Highway 61, but I know a fistful of other Dylan songs I like while so far other Van Morrison music has left me cold... On the other hand there is nothing from Van Morrison I dislike as much as Blood on Tracks so yeah, close call, won't change the final result anyway !)

Re: UMT 2012: Round of 64 #1
By using the scores accumulated in the second round, the totals were ranked 1 through 16. If any of the top 8 were defeated in the round of 128, the artist with the lowest point total would be matched up against the highest point total.Evan wrote:How were artists reseeded? Just curious...
.
For example, Otis Redding who had the 11th highest point total beat Paul Simon in the last round so instead of going up against Stevie Wonder he was reseeded to face The Who which had the highest point total of that grouping. The Smashing Pumpkins which would have faced The Who now matches up against Springsteen and Nine Inch Nails moves up a spot and faces Stevie Wonder. I hope that makes sense, maybe 8 or 9 of the 32 matchups in this round were affected by reseeding, in the brackets where all the favorites won nothing changed

Re: UMT 2012: Round of 64 #1
What's the have ever listened to Velvet Underground/have never listened to Velvet Underground split?
Re: UMT 2012: Round of 64 #1
Some of them are VU fans and struggled a bit, a few others are at least familiar with them. But U2 won this tournament in it's innaugural year in 2004 and fits the profiles of a majority of e-mail voters who are in their late 30's and grew up on 80's rock, U2, R.E.M., GNR, Depeche, VH, def leppard etc... I would imagine there may only be 3 or 4 that are not all that familiar with VU.Jirin wrote:What's the have ever listened to Velvet Underground/have never listened to Velvet Underground split?
I would say out of the 20-25 people I invited into this, 9 or 10 fit right in line with AMers. Probably another 9 or 10 really fit the profile in the above paragraph and then there are a few oddballs with an extreme ecclectic taste in music.
