Tie Break - songs of 1976

Post by Zorg »

Another year, another tiebreak...

Please pick between Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves and Paul McCartney's Silly Love Songs.

I will keep this poll open for 48 hours or so.

Happy voting!

Am I saying something controversial if I suggest both these won't proceed, but make room for Road Runner. It's only one point behind them as it is and if only one of the 1975 voters would have voted for it here it would have made it anyway. Of course, I can see the problem if an essentially 1975 song takes the place from one in 1976, but it is defendable, because it apparently has two versions. Most people are familiar with the 1976 version anyway.

If not, I vote for Police & Thieves.

Paul McCartney's Silly Love Songs.

For those that don't know, the story behind this song is that John Lennon criticised McCartney of only writing silly love songs. Then McCartney released this song.

Assuming that the number of voters for each year is fairly constant (which I think it is), perhaps we should include songs on a minimum score basis rather than a top 15 from each year, in future decade polls. That would solve the different versions issue. Also, songs from "strong years" would have a greater chance to advance.

Using a minimum of 101 points as the inclusion criterion, we would have had the following number of songs included from each year:
1970 25
1971 22
1972 16
1973 17
1974 14
1975 14
1976 14+1 (Roadrunner gets more than 100 points when votes for both the '75 and '76 versions are counted)

The potential drawback that I can see with this system is that it might stimulate strategic voting.
