Haters : Listyguy (140) Brad (148) Henry (148) Miguel (137)

TimmyWing : It's hard to guarantee that someone would even like this album. Would you put it on at a party? How could you even describe it - alien rock 'n' roll? From hell? But even in its first minute it puts you in a very strange, wary mood. Alan Vega's first echoed yelp half-way through Ghost Rider still gets me every time, and as anyone who's heard the album knows, that's not the worst of it. In terms of sheer power, Suicide has to be up there with the best of them. Favourite Tracks: Ghost Rider, Cheree, Frankie Teardrop

Fans : Nassim (19)
Haters : Dan (133)

TimmyWing : It's odd this album doesn't get more recognition than it does since it's basically a pre-packaged demo reel of what Eno can achieve. You get your weird yet funky rockers (which are really precursors to what he would later help Talking Heads create), and then a whole side dedicated to gorgeous, tranquil ambient-oriented tracks. A beautiful album. Favourite Tracks: Backwater, King's Lead Hat, Julie With, By This River, Spider and I

Fans : TimmyWing (14) CharlieDriggs (4) Mindrocker (13)
Haters : Nicolas (130/142)

TimmyWing : Incredibly strange. But if the grooves were nowhere as infectuous, it would just be a slog. As it stands, it is at turns joyous, goofy, strained, anguished, sentimental, and very rewarding. Paul Thompson almost carries the whole thing on the drums. What other band could make a catchy chorus from a registration number? Favourite Tracks: Re-Make/Re-Model, 2 H.B., Chance Meeting, Bitters End

I had a bit of a hard time remembering which Bob Marley album is which but I ended up ranking Natty Dread the higher at 19. I feel Catch a Fire has the best couple songs but Natty Dread is great from start to finish. Exodus is very even too but I feel it's the first one where the music gets at time formulaic, leading to decades of reggae songs sounding all the same. Anyway, I put all three in my top 50 while in the songs list I had all the reggae in my bottom 50, and I completely blame it on the forum picks :p

Ranking Eno albums have been hard to. I'd say Another Green World is my clear favorite, packing all Eno's best qualities. Taking Tiger Mountains feels slightly weaker than the others. The hardest was between Here Comes the Warm Jets and Before and After Science, Before and After Science has the strongest songs but feels much less like an album and more like a collection of songs, safe for the 3 last songs ; Here Comes the Warm Jets doesn't pack as great songs but works great as a whole... I gave the edge to Another Green World but could have gone the other way. That being said, as for Marley, I put all Eno's albums in the top 50 (including the 1st Roxy Music album).
I haven't done that for everyone, Big Star, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Elvis Costello all have both an album near the bottom and near the top of my list.

P.S : Henrik, here's a highfive for you ranking of Layla ;)

Yes. I happen to agree with Scaruffi. I think Here Come the Warm Jets and Another Green World aren't that great, and I think his best three are Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), Before and After Science and Ambient 1: Music for Airports. Haven't listened to My Life in the Bush of Ghosts recently, but that's not a solo album.
I feel like that

Well, I guess the hysterical "Peking O" keeps it from that top spot, but that song is just a set up for the eerie closer "Bring Me Coffee or Tea." The entire album is brilliantly sequenced. I was a bit surprised to see so little love for the band in the polls; I think it's a crime that Tago Mago was the only Can album to make it in, and not even in the Top 10 for its year. I guess I thought that AM's goodwill toward Kraftwerk would carry over to other bands from that scene, but I guess Kraftwerk's electronic albums sound very little like the raw rock we get here.

For me, it's simple, the first four albums of Eno : Here Come the Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), Another Green World and Before and After Science are all almost perfect.

Plus My Life in the Bush of Ghosts for a top 5.

Here's a write-up for Layla (the song or the album)

There are times in Clapton's career where I feel like he's practically nodding off (the Slowhand album comes to mind). But the whole Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album makes you feel as if he WILL DIE unless he can pull off the insane task of stealing a Beatle's wife. Next to the rest of his tastefully managed career, pick a track outside of a jam tune or "Thorn Tree in the Garden" and Clapton sounds possessed. The tension and agony becomes nearly unbearable by the time the album's almost over -- and then he lobs "Layla" at you.

LiveinPhoenix : Don’t you wish you could abandon some miserable sessions for an album – using much of the material for an entirely different album, and for solo albums – and still end up releasing a pretty great record? It’s just as well that the group went their separate ways when they did, but Let It Be goes to show that even working under a couple of handicaps, the Beatles' talents were practically limitless.

Kingoftonga : The Beatles' final album also feels like their least iconic; I feel that there's just not a whole lot of the personality that marked the band's other albums. Still, most other groups would kill to make an album as good as Let It Be, which contains some very strong songs even if it doesn't reach the heights of the group's previous efforts.

LiveinPhoenix : I used to approach this album with the type of reverence usually reserved for sacramentals. I’d still call this Neil's most unique album, out of a career not exactly short on unique albums. A track like "Borrowed Tune" is perfect in a way, in that it represents everyone in total shambles. Everyone in the photos looks like apparitions, just barely hanging on. Recorded a couple years before it was released (just a handful of months away from the much more upbeat Zuma), I'd like to think that Neil Young played this record again in 1975 and now heard the sound of himself determined to make it out of the bleakness, even if he couldn't see the way out in 1973.

Interesting order of appearance so far. I can't seem to make any kind of good prediction up til now. Biggest surprise: Yes' Close to the Edge. I would have thought it would vie for last place with Abba's Arrival (however, AM likes Abba more than I thought too, so who knows about that), but it came a lot higher. Good to see, though, as I like Close to the Edge.

Great presentation so far, Zorg.

Now that (I guess) the highest ranked Steely Dan showed up, I must say I expected that listening to their albums would be a torture but it was actually a nice surprise. Well, I only listened to 3 of them, but I really enjoyed The Royal Scam and quite liked Aja (Pretzel Logic, not so much). So once again, prejudice adverted !

I guess no Black Sabbath made it to the top 100, that's sad, their self titled album is easily my favorite Led Zeppelin album of the 70s... (and I'm not sure there are 10 minutes of 70s music I love more than Supernaut/Snowblind from Vol. 4)

Kingoftonga : This album isn't one of the canonical classics of the 70s, but it changed my conceptions of electronic music when I first heard it, so it holds a special place for me. It was one of the first albums I head that played electronic music that wasn't necessarily for dancing; Jarre's ear for melody is rock solid, and the music is much more rhythmically fluid than nearly every electronic album that would follow in its footsteps.

Really suprised about the low ranking of Bryter Lyter. I didn't make a list, but that one would definitely been in the top 10.

Also, Countdown to Ecstasy is my favorite Steely Dan album too, LiveinPhoenix! It seems to me their most varied work. Although I do like the others (Can't Buy a Thrill not that much).

Surprised Oxygene didn't get more love.

It's like I'm not on the same page with the kind of jazzy, polished, almost narcotized sound that Steely Dan wants to make. Can't Buy a Thrill will be showing up in my Haters section despite two of their better songs, for one reason because they wasted their time on that other vocalist.

Katie Lied had some weak moments, but deserved a higher rank in my view. You can count me as an ardent Steely Dan fan at least through the 1980's.

TimmyWing : I listened to Waterloo for the 1974 list, and that was by no means a great album. But somehow I find Arrival even worse...maybe because genuinely good singles like Knowing Me, Knowing You are offset by such cack as Dum Dum Diddle. When I Kissed the Teacher comes across as okay since the main lyrics are thankfully obscured by the harmonies. But in the context of the album, Dancing Queen doesn't thrill me as much as it did otherwise, and that is unforgivable!

LiveinPhoenix : If there was a creature in nature like ABBA, it'd be something harmless-looking that sprung its trap on you before you even knew what the hell just happened. Case in point, I remember meeting an old boss about something at work, he had ABBA in his CD player, and whatever I was talking about, it had to be interrupted so I could go, "KNOWING ME AND KNOWING YOU."

But it's the '70s, so there are a lot of incredible albums too, leaving ones like this in their wake. Anyway, I like to think of this as my 'singles solidarity' album. He just can't catch a break with these women! Favourite Tracks: Is She Really Going Out with Him, Happy Loving Couples, Throw It Away, Fools in Love, Pretty Girls

There seems to be a very anti-idiosyncratic, anti-dark sentiment in the votes for this poll.

I am a bit surprised that we haven't seen Todd's AWATS album yet. I expect to see it very soon.

My records indicate that all ten of the albums that took 15th place in their years have yet to appear in the bottom twenty. Even if my records are a bit off, it appears that some of these annual poll cellar dwellers have done substantially better than expected in our decade poll.

TimmyWing : Lindsey Buckingham goes completely insane! Also Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks write some nice songs. Favourite Tracks: Over & Over, Sara, What Makes You Think You're the One, Not That Funny, That's Enough for Me, Honey Hi, Tusk

LiveinPhoenix : After a recording artist's career-defining album, I expect them to ever so gradually lose hold of their focus and brilliance and end up one day releasing something that their younger, hungrier selves would have violently rejected. After Rumours, Fleetwood Mac spared us this waiting drama and immediately dropped an interminably boring double album (and dear God, the same year as London Calling).

I'd just like to say thanks to whomever voted for Caught Up - easily my favourite discovery from this poll. It's just some wonderful, well-made soul, very much in vein of Isaac Hayes's Hot Buttered Soul which I absolutely adore.

Having said that there are still some albums I haven't heard yet, but if anything trumps that I'll let you know. :)

TimmyWing : True, it's a little all over the place, but like so many great albums (just think of some of Tom Waits's stuff), it balances dumb humour and eccentricity (Dogfight Giggle, Is It My Name?) with some real heartfelt stuff (Sometimes I Don't Know What to Feel), even in the same track (who else would end a beautiful soul medley with such an off-kilter rendition of Cool Jerk?) A rollercoaster of an album. Favourite Tracks: Incredibly hard to choose. International Feel, the medley, and I Don't Want to Tie You Down, I suppose. But narrowing this album down to 3 tracks does it an incredible injustice.

Having said that there are still some albums I haven't heard yet, but if anything trumps that I'll let you know. :)
You're welcome, soul brother.

Pleasantly surprised to see Genesis do reasonably well, considering they had originally come in at #15 for the notorious year of 1974, squeaking in by 1 point (with me providing 50 of its 120 points).

As for my lowest-ranked album: I like Big Star's #1 Record a lot, still liked them with Radio City, but man that last album just hit the dirt, psychically and musically.

Yeah I wondered was it just my state of mind cos I listened to Third a different time than the two other albums, but at least you agree with me. I mean it's got everything; amateurish playing, amateurish vocals, crappy songwriting, crappy cover song...

I would rate it a very generous 1.4/10.

But I mean maybe it was my state of mind why I loathed it so much idk.
I feel like that

Really bummed that 104-101 all missed, great albums all of 'em. Also, shocked and slightly appalled that Maggot Brain came in at #118 -- the continued seeming dismissal of funk around here is saddening. :(

The one that surprised me the most was Mahmoud Ahmed, not necessarily his placing, but seeing how many haters there were for his album. Granted, I only ranked it at #18, but when I see the term "haters," I just can't imagine a more pleasing album to the ears (even if I don't understand the lyrics)...

I'm disappointed that all of the Big Star Albums dropped. Not even a couple of places either, 44 to 98? 80 to 109?

I'm a bit surprised that Leanard Cohen's "Songs of Love and Hate" has apparently made it into the top 50 of our poll. It was only the 14th highest polled album for its year, which was admittedly the very strong 1971.

It has some fervent supporters, must be my #3 (I think, haven't checked), Henrik's #1 and probably a few other high votes.
Plus 71 will probably do well overall anyway.

You are probably thinking of my all-time favorite, but that's "Songs of Leonard Cohen", and "Songs of Love and Hate" is not on the same level IMO (although "Famous Blue Raincoat" is my favorite LC song).

Compared to the last poll back in 2010, Songs of Love and Hate actually dropped! Looking back at the last poll, it was very strange indeed - Trans-Europe Express for example didn't even get into the final list!

Two #1 votes pole vault Robert Wyatt into the top 50. We're going to have to wait until #7 before we find another album that has two #1 votes.

Surf's Up was the lowest ranked album to receive a #1 vote, but sadly it was just not enough to reach the top 100. (Compare to the lowest ranked song to receive a #1 vote in the songs (Land by Patti Smith) that only made it to #148!)

Glad to see "Wish You Were Here" beat "The Wall", here's hoping it can take down "Dark Side of the Moon"!

Honorio : Futuristic soundscapes for the modern times, times of neon lights, metropolis, men-machine and also women-machine.

KingofTonga : Only a few shades away from beating "Trans-Europa Express." The songwriting may not be quite as solid on this album, but it's such a wild mix of traditional pop (best exemplified by "Das Modell" and atmospheric pieces like "Spacelab" and "Metropolis."

KingofTonga : Sometimes an album and the year it was released just line up perfectly. In this case, Neil Young bids the 70s farewell while also firing a warning shot for anyone who thinks he's done making great music. This isn't the last great album that Neil Young would make, but it's the last I'd call a masterpiece.

Honorio : Only Neil Young could namecheck Johnny Rotten and jump fearlessly between generations without losing credibility.

From the lurching and portentous opener, through the frenzied punk of Start to Move and Brazil to the end, it's 21 tracks of utter glory. And most of them are catchy as well! I think there were a few voters who just put every non-vocal album toward the bottom because they prefer vocal music. Africa Brasil had a bunch of haters too.
