Hall of Acclaim 2015!

Post by JimmyJazz »

This is the only round of voting for the AM Hall this year. Unlike previous times, since we are only voting for this year, I will keep the voting open for the entire month of February.

So how this game works is pretty simple: nominate at least five and no more than ten acts that you feel are deserving of being in the AMF Hall. Additionally, you can nominate up to three “backstage wing” individuals who you feel deserve to be in the Hall. “Backstage wing” types include songwriters, producers, record company founders/owners, music video directors, and critics/scholars. This is entirely optional, however, and your list will not be deemed ineligible if you don’t nominate anyone in this category. Another thing regarding acts: Please consider their work BEFORE the year 2015 when making your choices.

The point system I will be using is as basic as possible: #1 = 10 pts., #2 = 9 pts., and so on. For the backstage lists, if you only include one person, that person will get 3 points, a 2-person list has the second person get 2 points, and so on. I will keep this poll up until the 28th Saturday night midnight. The top four vote getters will be the inductees of that year. In the case of a tie, a vote will be used to determine the winner.

With that all said and taken care of, let the voting begin!

I'll change my approach this year and push for English-speaking artists who deserve to be inducted. It's mildly interested - I remember well how Blanco and me managed to get Soda Stereo to win their entry with only our two votes, and as we dig deeper in the English-speaking artists who have yet to be inducted, the more likely votes will become fragmented enough again to give a chance for artists from elsewhere :P

1. Yes: I discovered Yes only last year, and surely they are now among my favourite prog artists. Their four albums listed on AM are all masterpieces of the genre.

2. Deep Purple: A bizarre missing piece in our Hall of Acclaim puzzle. I think that there are few bands who should be more consensual.

3. The Grateful Dead: A recent discovery as well, and although my appreciation of their work is uneven, they are too important in music history not to be inducted.

4. Iron Maiden: Probably the greatest 80s metal band after Metallica.

5. Underworld: I doubt they will be inducted, for their following here on this forum is small, but to me their body of work just ranks equal (if not superior) to Aphex Twin, Daft Punk and Air.

6. Léo Ferré: The exception to my rule for this year. In France, Ferré is considered one of the three great post-war chanson singers, with Brel and Brassens, and Amour Anarchie might well be the greatest chanson album of all times.

7. Morrissey: Certainly, his solo work is not on par with the Smiths catalogue, but I just love this guy so much (probably my weakest voting rationale yet :P )

8. Janet Jackson: She was essential in the New Jack Swing scene and the development of the Modern R'n'B scene, so even though I'm not a hardcore fan and her work pales in the shadow of her famous brother, she might deserve to join him in the Hall.

9. Crowded House: It's strange how New Zealand doesn't seem to have an entry. Surely, through Neil Finn, this injustice could be partially corrected. Crowded House have so many great melodies, they should rank high in the pop pantheon.

10. Gorillaz: I might prefer Gorillaz's catalogue over Blur's. Their first album remains a favourite of mine.

Backstage:

1. Bob Ezrin: There's hardly another classic rock producer who deserves more to be included.

2. Robert John "Mutt" Lange: Except this one, perhaps.

3. Bob Geldof: Singer of the Boomtown Rats, co-founder of Band Aid, actor in The Wall, he has earned his place in pop music history.

1- Game Theory
I realize I'm basically throwing away my first place vote, but this band gave me two of my favorite albums from the 80's, so I think they deserve it. These guys would blow up the critical acclaim world if they got the publicity Rodriguez got last year.
2- Van Halen
At their best, they were very good. Their debut is among the best debuts in my opinion.
3- Green Day
Again, their best is damn good.
4- The Cars
Speaking of great debuts...
5- Billy Joel
It's a New York thing
6- Foo Fighters
Their albums aren't the best, but they have so many great singles
7- Tom Petty
Some good singles and albums
8- Soundgarden
"Superunknown"
9- Boston
Another debut for the ages
10- Richard an d Linda Thompson
One amazing album and another pretty good one is enough to get my last slot

1. Jimmy Cliff - Almost as important to reggae as Bob Marley. Has done a long career of good music, but only the early stuff is recognized by critics, which is okay. Great live performer. He would be an international addition!
2. Paul McCartney - New is another good album to his resume. Only One is the greatest song of all time. IMO.
3. Gorillaz
4. Exuma - A pioneer of freak folk. A legend, that has fallen into obscurity. I mean this guy toured with Dylan in the 60s.
5. The Zombies
6. Yes
7. Bon Iver - Perfect discography so far IMO.
8. R. Kelly
9. Drake
10. Swans isn't in yet?

Backstage:

1. Kanye West. If Brian Eno is in twice, Kanye deserves to be too, at least eventually. Scaruffi (see below) has said about Eno that he has changed the course of rock music at least three times. I think someone could say the same thing about Kanye when it comes to hip-hop. In addition to being an executive producer on all his own albums, his producing credits include The Blueprint, Common's Be and countless other albums and songs.

2. Piero Scaruffi. Italian music critic. He reviews a lot of genres that someone like Robert Christgau hasn't even touched on. If one wants to find out a bit more about some obscure artist, the chances are Scaruffi has a page dedicated to that artist. Of course he has some unorthodox opinions, but a lot of the time the criticism is objective.

Their first album, "I Could Live in Hope".
The highest album on AM, "Things We Lost in the Fire", including what is probably their most famous song "Dinosaur Act", is great too.
Beware, it's not exactly Yngwie Malmsteen...

I'm not sure there are much more known elsewhere but to indie fans/critics in France they are a major act, same as say Yo La Tengo. If you got a bunch of die hard French indie fans in the 40s and asked them for the greatest bands ever they would probably be somewhere at the bottom of the top 10 behind the Smiths, Sonic Youth and Husker Du.
We put their album C'mon as album of the year in 2011 in indiepoprock, I'm pretty sure I remember them on a cover of MagicRPM too. I'd never call them big, but not totally unknown for sure.

And "Things We Lost in the Fire" is a fantastic album.

Well, I'm not really acquainted with indie circles in France, so no surprise :P

Wikipedia: Yngwie Johan Malmsteen is a Swedish guitarist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader. Malmsteen became known for his neo-classical playing style in heavy metal.

Well, that shouldn't be a problem. Classical metal ain't exactly my cup of tea ;)

I'll leave a few personal favorites outside, but it's not like Millencolin, Puppetmastaz or At the Drive-In would have much chances anyway. My top 3 are huge omissions in the HOA though.

1. Built to Spill
2. Modest Mouse : the 2 greatest indie bands of the 90s/early 00s are not in yet !!!
3. Fugazi : probably the most underrated band in this forum
4. Slint : sure, that's a vote based on only one album... but such an influential one that it's enough for inclusion
5. Hot Chip : only LCD Soundsystem was better at being both insanely danceable and deep in emotions
6. Gorillaz
7. Four Tet
8. Low
9. Sparklehorse
10. El-P

Backstage wing, let's go with revolutionary hip-hop producers.
1. The Neptunes/Pharell Williams
2. Kanye West
3. El-P

1. Ennio Morricone
Just saw him live last sunday. Beautiful music along a wide range of films.
2. Dire Straits
Kind of surprised they aren't in yet, but I guess they can't shake of the image of dad rock. Ignore that please and enjoy some of the greatest guitar play, along with frequently surprisingly good lyrics.
3. Jimmy Cliff
Reggea master. Based on influence alone he should have been in there for a long time already.
4. Golden Earring
One for the international school. Most of the world knows them only for Radar Love and perhaps Twilight Zone, but here in The Netherlands they are the most enduring national rock band, with a string of hits that span decades. Personally, they have never really grown on me, but they have earned their recognition.
5. Fairport Convention
One of the greatest folk bands, especially when Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson were present.
6. Bernard Herrmann
Another great film composer. Where Morricone is grand and melancholic, Herrmann is more inward looking, at his best with unnerving psychological sounds.
7. Boudewijn de Groot
A Dutch icon in the vein of Bob Dylan. Because of the language barrier he probably lacks international appeal, but if we want this hall of fame to include music from the world he is a shoe-in for candidates from the Netherlands.
8. Yes
One of the few prog rock bands from the seventies whose reputation hasn't been completely tarnished.
9. Los Lobos
Varied Texas band with Mexican roots. They did great Latin flavored rock, but where also experimental and have build up quite a body of work.
10. Laura Marling
Sympathy vote. Perhaps it is too early in her career to include her, but she has made her way high in my list of favorite artists in no time.

Basically my same as last year, just slightly shuffled...

1. Os Mutantes - The best Brazilian group of 'em all, absurdist rockers whose music somehow stands the test of time better than so many of their anglo counterparts.

2. The Ronettes - Maybe the best girl group of them all.

3. Sun Ra - Of all the avant garde musicians, Sun Ra was the most truly OUT, in sound and vision and character. Just the sheer amount of great records he realized over a 3-decade period should get him in immediately.

4. The Shangri-Las - I feel they are underrated because Phil Spector did not produce them, but the sheer number of great tracks is amazing...even the minor singles and album tracks are well worth checking out.

5. Gil Scott-Heron - The true progenitor of rap, but with great songs that also bridge into jazz. His entire '70s output is worth checking out, and it's curious that he isn't feted more.

6. Prefab Sprout

7. Caetano Veloso

8. Jorge Ben

9. Boredoms

10. This Heat

Backstage Wing:

1. Teo Macero
2. Shadow Morton
3. Conny Plank

There is nowhere nearly enough Brazilian or girl group representation in the Hall.

Re: Hall of Acclaim 2015!

Post by jamieW »

I've decided to do the same thing I did last year and peruse the thread for the already nominated artists who I'd most like to see make the Hall (mainly because, last year, I kept inexplicably nominating artists that were already in ... and there's no sense in voting for personal favorites like Nightwish, Rebecca St. James, Sarah McLachlan, and even Evanescence, who range from unacclaimed to absolutely despised). Therefore, here's my 2015 ballot:

1. The Moody Blues (creators of my all-time favorite song, "Nights In White Satin," as polarizing as the artist themselves.)
2. The Cars (I love New Wave, and these guys were one of my favorites of the late 70s & 80s. "Moving In Stereo" and "Hello Again" are personal highlights.)
3. Gil Scott-Heron (An absolute legend. "Home Is Where the Hatred Is," "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," "Winter In America"... I heard he never liked the label "Godfather of Rap," though I would consider it a colossal compliment.)
4. Violent Femmes (Gordon Gano might sound like someone who'd beat you up and take your lunch money, but there were some very perceptive lyrics that resonated with alienated teenagers like me. "Color Me Once," a nightmarish nursery rhyme from "The Crow" soundtrack, is a great representation of what they did best.)
5. Janet Jackson (It might be blasphemous, but at times I almost thought she was more talented than her big brother. Her concept album, "Rhythm Nation 1814" is a strong example of why.)
6. Gorillaz
7. Billy Joel
8. Chicago
9. The Zombies
10. Yes

Others mentioned that I would also love to see make it in: Jorge Ben, Tom Petty, Astor Piazzolla, Swans, Air, Tori Amos, Eric B. & Rakim, Sarah Vaughan, The Shangri-Las, Sun Ra.

Thanks for conducting this poll Jimmy. The inductees were very tightly bunched in terms of votes. I am curious about the vote total for the nominee that finished in 5th place. Great to see Yes in our hall of fame.

The top two acts that almost got into the Hall this year were Gorillaz with 34 points and 6 votes, then the Grateful Dead with 33 points and 4 votes.

Thanks as well, Jimmy. Low and Morricone came out of nowhere for me, I was almost certain Gorillaz and the Dead would get in this year. I suppose next year will be theirs.

Thanks for conducting this poll Jimmy. This year I really thought Tom petty would get in. Well, maybe next year he will get his turn.

It looks like we skipped last year, and are in danger of skipping this year as well. And the last post was about hoping that Tom Petty would make it in.

This looks (I think) simple enough that even I can handle the proceedings, unless someone else wants to step up...

I'm nominating the moment I get to a computer. Maybe allow ten nominations to make up for the missing year?
