I am curious about this too. I still have a lot of catching up to do with this decade, as I spend so much time listening to stuff from the AM list from other eras, trying to work upwards through the eras. I have really only listened to the "big" albums and songs, but I would still like to vote in this. I could probably do a Top 50 for each.

Very good list Nassim and glad to see a high vote for Kindred (if it had simply been called an LP at the time of its release, I bet everyone would have it in their top 10).

For those who like Psycho Tropical Berlin, is there anything else like it, French or not? The most similar thing I can think of the last few years is Pepe Deluxe's Queen of the Wave (though that album is in English and sounds quite different, it has the same spirit of bizarre, high energy, genre-mixing psychedelia that is totally off the critical grid).

Maybe you can try Moodoïd, Orval Carlos Sibelius or Dorian Pimpernel (this one in the same Label of La Femme (BornBadRecords)).
And Pepe Deluxé deserve to be more well known, it's excellent ;-)

I wrote some comments on my top 5 albums. I may write some on my top 5 songs. I always love it when poll hosters use other people's comments in the results thread, so here's my stab at some comments for you to use (if you want), Jackson.

Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” may be the ultimate exploration of the id in modern music. Throughout the album we are treated to Kanye West, both the real West and his fictionalized version of himself, and we are treated to an ever blurring line between the two. The real Kanye West may have never married a porn star in a bathroom only to get divorced by the end of the night, but this fictionalized version of West has. But the distinction between both Wests are largely irrelevant, as “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” blurs all lines of distinction in its laser sharp focus on an individual gone mad. Ultimately the album functions as a sort of Modern Greek tragedy. We start out with our character Kanye West at the top of the world, a man who has it all on “Dark Fantasy”. But soon the chinks in the armor show. West lashes out at critics both real and fictional on “Gorgeous” and “Power”, and soon we are witness to the slow descent of his character. Any other rapper would have used a beat like the one found on “All of the Lights” to convey the greatest brags, instead West uses it to give us a narrative of a deadbeat father who just blew his last chance. On “Monster” and “So Appalled” we are treated to grotesque displays of hedonism, on “Devil in a New Dress” and “Runaway” West’s character reaches a moment of realization only to completely collapse inward on “Hell of a Life”. The album reaches its spiritual low point on “Blame Game”, which finds Wests character a mere shadow of his former self on “Dark Fantasy”, and only the Chris Rock monologue at the songs end gives the listener the faintest glimmer of light. West’s characters fate is left ambiguous on “Lost in the World” and “Who Will Survive in America”, but the story has been told. “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” is a drama of ego, id, self-loathing, celebrity, excess, and hedonism. It truly lives up to its name.

Frank Ocean- Channel Orange

“Channel Orange” is a tricky album to figure out. The album jumps around from one song to another, leaving the album functioning like an out of control TV rapidly changing its channels. But what we have on this album in terms of cohesiveness is some of the smoothest R&B put to record, as well as Ocean’s absolutely angelic voice giving each song life. The heartache in a song “Thinkin Bout You” is what leads this album off, but love is just one of many topics Frank Ocean covers over this albums 17 tracks. We get portraits of disaffected rich youth on “Sweet Life” and “Super Rich Kids”, stories of drug abuse on “Pilot Jones” and “Crack Rock”, and a multi-part R&B epic tale of prostitution and Egypt and time travel and who even knows what else on the ten minute long focal point “Pyramids”. On “Channel Orange”, Frank Ocean captures the sonic experimentation that was all over his first album and takes it to its limit, creating R&B that sounds like nothing else out there, while also crafting some of the best pop hooks this decade. “Channel Orange” works as a sort of love letter, but it’s not bogged down by that description. “Channel Orange” is many things at once, and the somewhat schizophrenic nature of the album only serves to compliment that.

Kendrick Lamar- Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City

It's been said before but I'll say it again- “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City” is a testament to amazing storytelling. I know this because I am a young college educated white male from an upper middle class background who gets absolutely captivating by Kendrick Lamar’s tale throughout “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City”. “Good Kid…” sticks us in the passenger seat of Kendrick’s moms van, and puts us through a single life altering day in the life of a younger Kendrick Lamar. We go from the ominous flash-forward prayer in the album’s beginning to watching helplessly as Kendrick finds himself in a tricky situation involving a girl and her cousins to Kendrick freestyle rapping in the back of a friend’s car. We find Kendrick succumbing to peer pressure and robbing houses, drinking to excess, smoking marijuana, and engaging in risky sex. And finally we reach the album’s turning point at the end of “Swimming Pools”, which then brings us to a moment of enlightenment for the young Kendrick. And as Kendrick treats us to this narrative, the album gives us quite possibly the best use of skits in a rap album, the voices of his mother and father calling Kendrick throughout the night, first out of worry that Kendrick won’t bring back his father’s “damn dominoes”, and later to reassure Kendrick in the face of his friend’s death. The song “Compton” is the victory lap of the album, the song playing as the credits roll. But the real ending comes on the song “Real”, as Kendrick’s mother and father tell him what it is to be “real” and express their love for a young Kendrick Lamar. "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City" is a story of love, of sin, and of redemption.

LCD Soundsystem- This Is Happening

One of the most frequently debated topics in the world of online music discussion is which band had the all time greatest debut album. Much fewer people spend the time to ask which band had the best final album of all time. I'm not quite sure which album is the single best finale, but I can assure you that "This Is Happening" is in the running. As far as swan songs go, “This Is Happening” has everything that made LCD Soundsystem one of the best bands of its generation- the summer hit that never was in “Drunk Girls”, the re-imagining of Bowie in “All I Want” (“Heroes”, anyone?) and “I Can Change” (“Ashes to Ashes”?), the sleezeball hangover-esque funeral march of “Somebody’s Calling Me”, the quotable one liners (“present company excluded every time”, “we have a black president and you don’t, so shut up”), and the heartstring pulling closer (“Home”). On their final album, LCD Soundsystem create a work of art that moves your body just as well as it moves your heart and mind. “This Is Happening” may be an end of an era, but it’s going to make sure that the era goes out with a bang.

Arcade Fire- The Suburbs

Nostalgia is a tricky subject to convey in art, and it’s all too easy to fall into the same old saccharine traps that many others have fallen into. When Arcade Fire scaled back their sound and wrote an album about the suburbs and all the nostalgia that accompanies them, it was all too easy to see how clichéd images of white picket fences and little houses made of ticky tack could worm their way into the album, diluting its message. But Arcade Fire are smarter than this, and on “The Suburbs” Arcade Fire make sure that you know it. You know that nostalgia is a powerful force when a band full of successful rock stars is writing songs about how they’d love to go back to their idyllic life of cul de sacs, suburbia, and youth. But while the album functions as a vessel for all sorts of warm feelings, “The Suburbs” never really shies away from exploring the darker sides of suburbia, something that many, many works of art in the second half of the twentieth century did (two films that come to mind are “Blue Velvet” and “American Beauty”). But Arcade Fire also approach their subject with a lot of love too, something that many artists are afraid of. Arcade Fire hold equal parts love and cynicism about the suburbs they once called home, and throughout their third album they explore the meaning behind this contradiction.

So are you saying my albums list of 38 albums is ineligible as it is???

Edit: Obviously I could/would do 50, but that would mean I would have to go beyond my all-time albums list of 332 albums.

Screening through the thread, I noticed a couple of people put out lists of 20.
I feel like that

That's a good point. I feel like 50 albums isn't a difficult ask for a 5 year period (that's just 10 albums per year), but I don't want to exclude people who post here regularly from participating.

I'll expand my list, but I'll kind of put it separate from the 38, so it will be counted only in the case that 50 is the minimum requirement.

Maybe the people that put 20 items on their list will weigh in on the subject and we'll see how that goes.

Edit: Okay I did it, but the expansion is only to be used in the case that 50 is the minimum.

I have a 50, but only posted 20 because they might change/like to keep some things a surprise until the final reveal. :)

Nowadays, unless I don't really fall for an album, I usually just listen to the most recommended tracks. Therefore I was planning to post a top 20 for albums and a top 200 for songs.

This is a compilation as far as I know, therefore ineligible. However, that's a pretty good placement for The Weeknd's House of Balloons. :D

This is subject to change. Also, I'll need to double check if any of the songs from 2010 albums were released in 2009. If anyone notices any, let me know. I enlarged certain songs that I think probably fly under the radar. Also, at number 108, I have Chance the Rapper's track "Pusha Man/Paranoia." If these are considered two separate songs, let me know and I will change up the rankings.

Most represented artists: Kanye West - 18 songs; The National - 13 songs; Arcade Fire - 9 songs; Kendrick Lamar - 8 songs

Sorry to continue to pick at your list but Wikipedia describes this album as a reissue of an album (Born to Die) that you already have in your list. I'm not sure if that's eligible either. Depends what Jackson thinks. I know, I seem like the know-it-all in class that everybody hates. ;)

I was counting the Paradise EP, which I believe is eligible under the "Burial" rule. If it isn't, let me know so i can fix my list again. Also sorry for causing everyone a headache lol.

Nick wrote:Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

This is absolutely on point. This is basically everything I think about the album, only said much better than I could have.

Here's my comments for my top 5 songs...

Kanye West- Runaway

Feel free to call me out here, but “Runaway” may just be the most sonically adventurous song in all of hip-hop. If the nine minute long run time wasn’t enough to get this song in the running for that title, the last three minutes of the song is a vocoder/string solo. What other hip-hop song has the sheer balls to do something like that? Kanye West screams into his vocoder like a dying android and it magically sounds amazing. “Runaway” is the crown jewel in “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”, a song that absolutely bleeds remorse, a song about recognizing that you’re the bad guy and there’s just about nothing you can do to make it right. It’s a gigantic song, and perfectly encapsulates the drama at the heart of its album.

Cee Lo Green- Fuck You!

As far as opening lines go, “I see you driving round town with the girl I love and I’m like ‘fuck you’”, is one hell of an opening line. On “Fuck You!” Cee Lo Green comes off as a particularly foul mouthed Stevie Wonder, creating one of the catchiest, most sing-along-able songs of the decade thus far. But one of the best aspects of the song is the total dissonance between the sunshine filled Motown-esque R&B nature of the music and the foul language in the lyrics, which makes the first “fuck you” all the more jarring and ultimately hilarious. “Fuck You!” is a pop song in a long line of pop songs- from “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to “Dancing Queen” to “Billie Jean”- that takes an arsenal of hooks and uses every last one of them.

M83- Midnight City

Every music nerd has “that moment” in a song. “That moment” where the stars align and water turns to wine and a couple of seconds in a pop song can seem like the greatest human achievement of all time. It’s the kind of moments that music nerds live for. That moment for me is at exactly 3 minutes and 2 seconds into M83’s “Midnight City”, because that my friends is where the best saxophone solo in any pop/rock song begins. Period.

Daft Punk (featuring Pharrell)- Get Lucky

You know what I said about “Fuck You!” and how that song is one song in a lineage of great pop songs with an arsenal of hooks? Well “Get Lucky” is in that same exact lineage. Who would’ve thought in 2013 that Daft Punk and Pharrell would team up to create one of the best songs of Daft Punk’s career, and a sure to be defining song of the 2010’s? “Get Lucky” is a sun-kissed slice of disco-pop, a gooey sugar coated alcohol fueled earworm, and a testament to great songwriting.

Robyn- Dancing On My Own

The Smiths made a career out of writing songs for people like the protagonist of “Dancing On My Own”. The feelings expressed in “Dancing On My Own” are age-old, but every generation needs their anthem for unrequited love, and the sleek, propulsive, and chrome plated production of “Dancing On My Own” is enough for the song to become the anthem for the 2010’s. It also helps that Robyn brings her best hook to date on the song with “I’m in the corner/watching you kiss her/I’m right over here/why can’t you see me?”. By the time Robyn reaches the “I’m giving it my all” in the chorus, you practically want to reach out to her and give her a hug and tell her that everything’s going to be alright. That’s the level of empathy this song inspires.

Maybe you can try Moodoïd, Orval Carlos Sibelius or Dorian Pimpernel (this one in the same Label of La Femme (BornBadRecords)).
And Pepe Deluxé deserve to be more well known, it's excellent ;-)
Thanks - I need to spend more time in your French songs thread!
Yes.. of course ;-) it's always a good idear.

Good to see that one on your list, otherwise I probably would have forgotten to add 'Passed Me By' to my list, since EPs are allowed (fortunately). Haven't gotten around to listen to 'We Stay Together' though, so I will only list 'Passed Me By'. I expect 'We Stay Together' to be of equal quality.

I remember ordering the combined EPs, both those weren't available anymore as a package. That's why I ended up with only 'Passed Me By'.

Really enjoying going through these picks. And I LOVE your number 1 pick.

I think I will go for a smaller list, but with comments for every album/song, probably around 50 or so. I think that would be nicer than to rank albums that I don't know very well to fill up to 100.

I've just listened to all three of these today. Sir Luscious Left Foot still sounds good to these ears, but Treats (which when it came out sat among my top 20 of all time) has really dropped down. I think I even prefer their second album to Treats at this point.

Thanks for posting - very nice list. Colonial Problems, pom pom, and Pinata (among others) all deserve some love around here.

Also you have as little cross-over between albums and songs list as humanly possible. I would not have guessed those were by the same person.

Some nice unique picks here. So I take it you like Kevin Parker's projects?
Sure I do! Though I didn't really like Pond's Hobo Rocket but I don't know if he was involved in that.

Re: Albums and Songs of 2010-2014 Poll - Lists Thread

Post by Jackson »

I just tabulated the 20 albums lists posted so far. I don't think the results would really shock anyone, though the album with the most total votes so far is not by Kanye West or Arcade Fire (but if you're a MBDTF fan, I wouldn't be too worried).

Here are some albums I really like with NO votes so far:

Peaking Lights - 936 (beautiful psychedelic album with dub influences, the group has made two decent albums since but nothing touching this)
Balam Acab - Wander / Wonder (for fans of Burial-style electronica)
Goat - World Music (hasn't aged as well as I thought, but still a very fun listen with great percussion and a lot of energy)
Julianna Barwick - The Magic Place (very pretty ambient album I need to revisit)
Tops - Picture You Staring (one of my favorite albums of 2014 was completely unhyped anywhere, minimalist indie pop in the style of the xx's debut)

Also Dean Blunt and Actress have only received votes from sonofsam so far...I thought they had at least a couple other fans on here.
