2012 AM World Cup: Drafting Thread

Post by Listyguy »

Welcome to the AM World Cup Drafting Thread.
Here, post the two artists you would like to “own” for the cup. If you are the owner of a returning team (and have reclaimed them), please only select one other team (I have no picks in this draft). Please note that you must submit a list of eight songs that you would like to use for the artist’s matchups. Make sure they are listed in order (i.e. song 1 will be used for the artist’s first match up). You are allowed to change the list up until the match up starts. It is not clear yet whether amendments to lists will be public or not. If you fail to submit a list within a week, the artist will be available to the public again.

The following teams are not available: Queen, Jimi Hendrix, The Smiths, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and Steely Dan. (And any teams that have been drafted already)

The following teams are still available to be reclaimed by their owners from last year: Marvin Gaye (Nicolas), The Beach Boys (Andre), Bruce Springsteen (Drewcannon3), Michael Jackson (Alex D), New Order (Midaso), Pearl Jam (Rocky Raccoon) and Coldplay (Toni).
If these teams are not reclaimed, they will be available later in the lottery draft.

The following team must be drafted by somebody: Otis Redding.

Let's see. I already have one of the same people I managed last year so I'll leave Tom Waits and Elvis Costello for other people to pick up.

Part of me really wants to go with Jorge Ben, and the only reason not to is that I don't know any of the names of his songs and it'd be hard to select.

It's tough to find that cross section of 'Not obvious' and 'Stands a chance'.

Screw it, I'll go with Jorge Ben. If somebody else who knows him better wants him, I will trade him for one of your slots.

I thought we weren't picking our songs publicly this year.

Someone clarify, do we need to pick song lists at this point? I thought we weren't picking songs until we knew who our opponent was, and I definitely thought we weren't revealing them until both are chosen.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well, which is why I nominated the first 8 tracks off Dirty Work for The Rolling Stones, rather than my actual picks.

I just want songs lists to prevent the team from not having a song to play.
Of course, the songs lists can be adjusted up until the match starts based on your opponent. The only major discrepancy at this point is whether or not changes to the lists will be public or private.
Also, everyone who have asked for an artist has gotten them (except for Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen, who can still be reclaimed by their owners from last year).
Also, Nicolas, do you want to reclaim your Marvin Gaye team?

If lists are going to be public, we should have a rule that if one person changes their song, their opponent gets an opportunity to change their song in response before the match starts. That way nobody can put forth something weak then cram in a change right before the deadline.

@Jirin: This is fair enough
@John: This game basically follows World Cup format, where there are 4 team "pools", and each team within the pool faces off, and the top two teams advance to the playoff round. With your song lists, the song you want the artist to use week 1 should be first on the list, and so on.

No, once a song is played it cannot be used again. I believe the only exception to this is the tie-breaker situation, where Listy allows you to pick any song (but a second tie-breaker cannot use the song from the first one).

As Stephan said, songs are not allowed to be repeated (except in tie-breakers), and you are allowed to change your songs list up until the match starts.

John:

The idea of the game is that it's a World Cup style knockout tournament with bands, only we're not voting for the band we like better, we're voting for one song by the band we like better. So maybe it's the Beatles against Jimi Hendrix. The Beatles manager chose Rain and the Jimi Hendrix manager chose Manic Depression. So, you vote between which of those two songs you like, and the winner moves on.

So, it's basically an artist voting game with strategy.

Important here is that you may want to save your hit songs for the later rounds in which you may be facing tougher opponents.

Jirin: For Jorge Ben I would say start off with a varied set of tracks to expose people to all he has to offer. To represent his samba-rock period several cuts off A Tábua de Esmeralda (e.g. Zumbi), and Força Bruta (anything, really) would be good as they are probably the most accessible albums, and as you already indicated Samba Esquema Novo can easily represent his early samba period. Finally, I think his later funk period, and mainly África Brasil, really needs to be heard, of which Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma) and Taj Mahal are strong cuts.

I was planning to start this on June 3, but considering we only have 10 managers right now (and need 16-22), it may take longer.

So, the lists now really mean nothing or do we have to have an initial list and can change what song we choose from that list up until the matchup. This is how I'm reading it: Initial lists already posted: set in stone once the tournament starts, but you can choose any song from that list for each matchup. I think I'm getting confused because it feels like the initial lists shouldn't be public at all.

I don't know, last year we did it so those were your nominations, but you could change any time up to the start of the match. But this led some people to first pick a weak song, then when their opponent picked a weak song in response, change it out with a classic at the last minute so their opponent had no time to change in response.

I'm hoping this year the lists we declare now will just work as placeholders in case somebody disappears or something, so we don't have to sit and wait for everyone to make a pick. This year I'm thinking matches will be announced one day before they start and we can declare any changes privately to Listy.

(Like, these picks are just your defaults, and the real picks are made secretly)

@Moonbeam: You only have one team, you may take another.

@Nassim: Sorry, you can't use solo stuff by the artists.

@John & Jirin: I'm not sure that "secret" is the right way to describe it. Changes will be public, and the opponent will be allowed to respond to any douche bag moves like changing your song at the last minute.

Hey, nice to be in the forum again! I've moved to another city in the beggining of the year, and since then it's the first time I visit the site. At least I came here before the closing of the draft thread for AM World Cup, my favorite game from last year. Well, no Coldplay for me this time. Taking them to the big 8 last year was already a victory for me, haha! This time I'd like to go with Arcade Fire, if possible. Maybe I choose another artist later, but for now I keep only with Win and Co.

Believe it or not, last year I had more than enough (some managers that requested a third team didn't get them last year). As much as I would like to do that, it wouldn't work without the four-team pools.

Why not? We'd simply use 8 pools instead of 16 and the top two artists go through to the next round. This is the actual setup of the FIFA World Cup as well. The only change that would bring about is that an artist that gets to the final plays 7 matches, and thus everyone only get to nominate 7 songs.

That said, it is a shame that interested has waned that much, it's something that seems to be happening in other games as well.

I suppose that could work. However, as you pointed out, I don't want to run a poll for such a limited number of people. However, I will re-open drafting, and if we get enough teams (32) by next Sunday (June 17), I will run the poll.
