First things I noticed:
-Revolver falls back to #2 as Pet Sounds reclaims the top spot on the albums list
-Kanye continues to climb (MBDTF up to 73)
-Frank Ocean drops...a lot (down to #135 after being #99 last year)

New entries to top 200 albums:
-Untrue
-Homework
-Rage Against the Machine
-Good Kid, Maad City :music-rockon:
-Wish You Were Here :music-rockon:
-The Specials
-Blood Sugar Sex Magik
-Let It Be

And these are the albums they replaced:
-Original Pirate Material
-The Velvet Underground
-Let's Get It On
-Agætis Byrjun
-1999
-The Gilded Palace of Sin
-Court and Spark
-Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

Thank you Henrik, of course, and I hope this update was not too much of a strain on your health. Here's hoping you'll get better as quickly as possible.

The new genres tree is stunning. So many details! They're even different for each album... Woah! It's a tremendously great feature that you've added there. I've got some acquaintances who only explore some genres, and although I think it's a shame, I believe this new feature might please them and (I hope) attract them to this website.

Letdown moment: I thought the inclusion of French lists with some albums having very high rankings (Melody Nelson, Tostaky, Fantaisie militaire) would push them a lot higher, and in the end they barely budged. I suppose I raised my expectations too high.

Question: I've checked "The Bends" and "OK Computer", and although "The Bends" is a main entry in Gilles Verlant's "La Discothèque Parfaite de l'Odyssée du Rock" and "OK Computer" only a complementary entry, both of their rankings display "No Order". I thought it would be like for Tom Moon's book, with a "Main entry" ranking with higher weight and complementary entries with a lesser weight. Did you apply such a weighing system in the end and it's just not displayed on the album pages?

Otherwise everything looks beyond fantastic so far. :music-rockon:

Thanks, Henrik. I'm loving everything I see so far. The new additions you've made to the site are incredible. And, most importantly, as Pierre said, I hope all is better with your health. (For some odd reason, I'm happy to see "Pet Sounds" back at #1, even though I prefer it by only a fraction to "Revolver." Maybe it's just because I was so accustomed to seeing it #1 when I visited the site in the early years. It almost feels like it's regained its rightful place...)

Simply amazing as always, Henrik. Thank you for everything you do. I'm actually running around a lot today, so won't have time to immerse myself in the update until this evening, but I am eagerly looking forward to it.

One note: You had said something in the EOY 2014 thread about making some sort of statistical allowance for the very late release of Black Messiah, and apparently that's exactly what you did. Great to see it as high as it deserves!

Henrik, what made you decide to redefine it as a compilation and remove it after all these years? Just curious. This is obviously the most drastic change to the list.

Pet Sounds reclaims #1. No complaints.

#175 seems way too high for "Seasons". I like it as much as the next guy, but I don't think it's Top 200 material.

Otherwise, mostly content with everything.

Unacclaimed will come shortly.

I recall, oh brothers and sister of AM, back in the days of 2010, when our lord and savior Yeezus graced us with his magnum opus, a compact disc entitled "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy".

Despite the disc's late release date (in the month of November of the year 2010), the disc was quick to place on the eventual "end of the year spreadsheet", becoming the third highest ranked album of the year (behind only The National and Arcade Fire).

But there were some naysayers. Naysayers who claimed that the high placement of "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" on the spreadsheet was but a fluke. "Surely" they claimed "this is only due to the cult of celebrity surrounding Mr. West. In no time at all this album will plummet! Perhaps it may even fall off the great 3000 altogether!"

But the devout acolytes of Yeezus bowed their heads in reverence, and waited.

In the year 2013, the website was updated. And lo and behold, oh brothers and sister! "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" was not only the 220th highest ranked album of all time, but it was also the 2nd highest ranked album of 2010, surpassing The National!

But still the naysayers proclaimed "Surely this is all a great mistake! In due time the album will fall from grace. This West fellow is just a fad! Just a flash in the pan!"

But the devout acolytes of Yeezus bowed their heads in reverence, and waited.

Then the year 2014 came, and again, the website was updated. And "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" had risen beyond anyone's wildest dreams. "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" was not only the 97th highest ranked album of all time, it was also the album to make a greatest leap forward in placement, as calculated by a ratio between past and present placement. Again, the acolytes were thrilled by the bountiful harvest Henrik and his grand calculations had bestowed upon us.

But still the naysayers proclaimed "Bah humbug! This West fellow is not only overrated, he is also a homosexual gill-bearing aquatic animal! It is only a matter of time before he falls from critical acclaim!"

But the devout acolytes of Yeezus bowed their heads in reverence, and waited.

And now, oh brothers and sister of AM, the year is 2015, and the hour of the update is upon us. "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" has again risen, jumping from position 97 to position 73 on the list of greatest albums of all time. Upon seeing this, the naysayers turned off their computers in shame, and threw themselves prostrate to the ground. "How could we ever doubt you, oh Yeezus?" they cried.

But Yeezus is a forgiving one, and he spared the naysayers. And with a wave of his hand, Yeezus ascended his acolytes into heaven, to live among him til the end of days.

Amen.

No, no, no, this won't do at all Henrik! I've had a very busy wek and have an equally busy week coming. I've had too little sleep. And you just have to choose exactly this moment to force this update on us. That's just mean ;)

Anyway, last year I went through the whole album and song list one by one in one day. Don't know how to manage that now, but we'll see.

Intensely perusing the update, I would imagine. Plenty of time for comments once everyone has started to fully digest.

Females like Beyonce, Lana Del Ray and Nicki Minaj saw pretty siazable jumps, but, on the whole, females took a big hit in artist ranking. Solo female acts in the top 1,000 dropping by 100+ positions, compared to the 2014 update:

464 (-110). Rihanna
490 (-117). Neko Case
537 (-143). Britney Spears
587 (-104). Alicia Keys
596 (-142). Lady Gaga
702 (-123). Nancy Sinatra
756 (-168). Sarah Vaughan
839 (-137). Annie
856 (-109). Linda Ronstadt
899 (-116). Roberta Flack
986 (-116). Sheryl Crow
990 (-165). Gwen Stefani

These solo females dropped out of the top 1,000:
1,004 (-99). Norah Jones
1,009 (-105). Aimee Mann
1,011 (-56). Kelly Clarkson
1,041 (-168). Peggy Lee
1,062 (-133). Amerie
1,099 (-328) Mariah Carey
1,161 (-201). Nelly Furtado
1,168 (-326). Christina Aguilera
1,289 (-332). Laura Marling

Question: The Madonna/Massive Attack cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" has appeared on two notable list: 1,000 Songs You Must Hear... and Q's 500 Greatest Lost Tracks. Would it need one more to appear as a "bubbler"?

The songs in Bruno's list were either from 2014 or bubbling under. I didn't add any older songs, although a lot of other songs would surely have made the top 6000. I couldn't do everything.

I added a small number of pre-2014 albums. Those were

1686 Ton Steine Scherben - Keine Macht für Niemand (1972)
2162 The Black Keys - Thickfreakness (2003)
2230 Danny Brown - XXX (2011)
2337 Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster (2009)
2494 Actress - Splazsh (2010)
2556 Drake - Thank Me Later (2010)
2957 Stone Temple Pilots - Core (1992)
Clams Casino - Instrumentals (2011)
Julianna Barwick - The Magic Place (2011)
Kendrick Lamar - Section.80 (2011)
Mac DeMarco - 2 (2012)
Nas - Life Is Good (2012)
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple (1994)
The Caretaker - An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011)
WU LYF - Go Tell Fire to the Mountain (2011)

Yes, I handled them differently for the rankings. I will update the album pages later on.

Henrik, what made you decide to redefine it as a compilation and remove it after all these years? Just curious. This is obviously the most drastic change to the list.
I've been thinking for many years that it's definitely a compilation.

Personally I agree fully, but it (and "Two Weeks") really were superior in the EOY lists.

OK, in that case it's just a cosmetic detail. Thanks for answering Henrik, and once again a big thank you for the update!

Update's looking great, but I think the CSS somehow got screwed up on the front page.

Seems like this update was good for rock and rap and not so good for other genres. A lot of the more folky albums dropped a bit.

Good to see the fans of The Artist Delusionally Known as Jesus still gloating their asses off every time he rises a point and rubbing a lot more hyperbole in everyone else's faces.

I don't think so. SNF has a majority of new songs, and those are the most "central" songs as well.

I believe I've asked before, but I forgot the response. :) Ever strongly considered including Saturday Night Fever and The Bodyguard for the Bee Gees and Whitney Houston, respectively? They're both heavily associated with the albums (Bee Gees have six of 17 tracks on SNF- with two other songs on the album written by them- and Houston has six of 12 on the U.S. edition of TBG). In turn, the Recording Industry Association of America credits them with those albums. (Billboard also includes TBG when talking about Whitney Houston's chart info- not sure about BG/SNF).

I'd strongly support such a move if it were to happen the future. 8-)

I think if nothing else the albums should be listed on those artists' pages on the website, so people that are searching the site can find those albums with more ease.

Thank you so much, Henrik! I've been eagerly awaiting this for months. My girlfriend was a little annoyed with all my speculation on the rankings over the past several months. Now it'll be even worse with how much I'll be talking about the new rankings!

A couple notes:

I'm surprised how many of the 2010s and late-2000s albums took dips in the rankings. Did you adjust the formula so that newer releases wouldn't rise so much or is that just how it turned out with this update?

Biggest upset so far for me is that, despite Take Care's climb of over 800 spots, Drake's opus (in my opinion), Nothing Was the Same has dropped about 100 spots. Seriously people, visit or revisit NWTS. It's astounding in so many ways. channel ORANGE's drop is also heartbreaking. Also, I thought for sure Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers would crack the top 100 on its 2nd overall finish on Spin's best albums of the past 30 years list, but in the end it hardly budged.

I like the jumps for good kid, m.A.A.d. city, Acid Rap, The Money Store, Days, Halcyon Digest and many more I don't have the time to list. I also like the jump for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, though I expected a higher leap. More like top 60.

I really love the additions to the site (especially the genres!). I'm curious, though, if your intention was to completely reflect the genres listed on RYM or not. If so, I think I've noticed a couple mistakes such as Tune-Yards' Nikki Nack only being listed as "art pop" when RYM also has it as "progressive pop."

I'm not sure I like the boost for Black Messiah. I love its placement, but that sets a precedent. I don't recall you doing the same for Beyonce's album in 2013 (forgive me if you did) even though it pretty much got the same treatment from the critics. My personal opinion is that the site should reflect as accurately as possible the rankings from the critics and we shouldn't make any assumptions about how high the albums might've climbed under different circumstances. Regardless, the site is yours and I'll back your decisions.

I'm willing to cut Henrik a little slack on this - since this was the second year in a row that something like this had occurred (the 2013 Beyonce drop may have seemed like a one-time fluke at the time), he probably figured that maybe some statistical allowance was called for. In any case, Beyonce took a huge, well-deserved leap in this update, so everything's somewhat balanced out now.

Wow, I completely overlooked this, even though it's something for which I've been hoping for years. Fantastic!!!

I actually cheered and whooped when I saw Pet Sounds was No. 1 again. Take that Revolver! :P

As much as I love The Beatles, Revolver never seemed to me as cohesive and affecting a work as Pet Sounds. It's a bit far-reaching in terms of style, and that exploration is limited to one style per song, whereas the whole sound of Pet Sounds is a singular mix of modern classical, jazz, rock 'n' roll, and 'sound effects music' much like PDQ Bach's records of the same time. But where unorthodox instruments were used there for comedy, here it's somehow translated to wondrous beauty.

I mean, I'm still gonna put Blonde on Blonde at #1 in the 1966 poll, but if anything is worthy of the 'Most Acclaimed Album Ever' title, it's got to be PS.

My new biggest disappointment of the update: drops for every The National album.

Also, I can't be the only one who feels strange seeing Homework as Daft Punk's most acclaimed record, can I? Personally I think RAM is their best work yet but I expected Discovery to hold onto the number one spot and eventually breach the top 100.

First off, thanks so much for the update Henrik! I've really enjoyed going through the songs list over the past few hours (took a glance at the album list and it didn't look like there was much upheaval, but I did enjoy the boost for Loveless).

The first thing I noticed on the songs list was that songs I've always thought were a little underranked on the upper part of the list, like "God Only Knows", "Gimme Shelter", "Waterloo Sunset", and "Heroes", continue to climb. Actually, all four of those have risen each of the four times the list has been updated, which got me thinking about what other songs had accomplished that. There are 69 songs that have risen in all four updates (2008 rank in parentheses):

3 | The Beatles | A Day in the Life (20)
18 | The Beach Boys | God Only Knows (51)
26 | David Bowie | "Heroes" (59)
27 | The Rolling Stones | Gimme Shelter (130)
29 | The Kinks | Waterloo Sunset (57)
73 | Donna Summer | I Feel Love (148)
78 | The Smiths | There Is a Light That Never Goes Out (179)
83 | The Smiths | How Soon Is Now? (175)
88 | Radiohead | Paranoid Android (305)
131 | Elvis Presley | Jailhouse Rock (192)
149 | Television | Marquee Moon (324)
156 | Led Zeppelin | Kashmir (403)
159 | The Beatles | While My Guitar Gently Weeps (388)
164 | The Undertones | Teenage Kicks (265)
185 | Jonathan Richman/The Modern Lovers | Roadrunner (248)
186 | The Beatles | Eleanor Rigby (347)
200 | Blue Öyster Cult | (Don't Fear) The Reaper (252)
220 | Prince | Purple Rain (417)
245 | The Velvet Underground | Venus in Furs (1788)
270 | Bob Dylan | The Times They Are A-Changin' (462)
275 | The Velvet Underground | Sweet Jane (498)
279 | David Bowie | Ashes to Ashes (878)
291 | Thin Lizzy | The Boys Are Back in Town (460)
312 | Daft Punk | Da Funk (516)
325 | Portishead | Glory Box (1839)
334 | Pixies | Where Is My Mind? (622)
