** From Wikipedia
Radio 1 was established in 1967 (along with its somewhat more adult-oriented counterpart, BBC Radio 2) as a successor to the BBC Light Programme, which had broadcast popular music and other entertainment since 1945. Radio 1 was conceived as a direct response to the popularity of offshore pirate radio stations such as Radio Caroline and Radio London, which had been outlawed by Act of Parliament.[6] Radio 1 was launched at 7:00 am on Saturday 30 September 1967.

The first disc jockey to broadcast on the new station was Tony Blackburn, whose cheery style, first heard on Radio Caroline and Radio London, won him the prime slot on what became known as the "Radio 1 Breakfast Show". The first words on Radio 1 – after a countdown by the Controller of Radios 1 and 2, Robin Scott, and a jingle, recorded at PAMS in Dallas, Texas, beginning "The voice of Radio 1" – were "... And, good morning everyone. Welcome to the exciting new sound of Radio 1". This was the first use of US-style jingles on BBC radio, but the style was familiar to listeners who were acquainted with Blackburn and other DJs from their days on pirate radio. The first complete record played on Radio 1 was "Flowers in the Rain" by The Move

Very definitely 1966 - where it sadly fell well short of making the cut in spite of getting top 15 positions from 8 voters.

Contrary to expectations, these 'big' years are not getting any/much greater allocation of wildcard slots than their nominal 5. This is mostly due to the fact that the number of voters hasn't increased as anticipated. So a good variety of 60's sounds will make to final poll. Excellent IMO.

The competition is getting killer. Not a single Hendrix track in the Top 15? And yet, I can't see any that shouldn't be there (though I'm slightly surprised that "Venus in Furs" was our VU track of choice).

I had hoped "Goodbye and Hello" would have a stronger showing based on its appearance in a Moderately Acclaimed tournament from a few years ago, but I suppose it's an acquired taste.

When we ranked the tracks, these were our favourites:
1. Heroin (3.1)
2. Sunday Morning (3.3) (1966)
3. I'm Waiting for the Man (3.4)
4. Venus in Furs (3.8)
5. All Tomorrow's Parties (4.4) (1966)

All except 'Heroin' will make our 60's poll. 'Heroin' had more individual voters than either 'I'm Waiting for the Man' or 'All Tomorrow's Parties', but missed out from not having top 5 positions. 'Heroin' also appeared in many lists outside the top 15. So while it is the consensus favourite, those other tracks are regarded as amongst the best songs of 66/67 by some of those who enjoy them. As it happens, I'm a fan of 'Venus in Furs'.
