Films of the 2010s: 2014

Post by Petri »

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 20 of each period will go on to the final top 100. The deadline is October 31st.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 2014:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 30 p
3. 20 p
4. 15 p

3 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 20 p
3. 15 p

2 votes
1. Movie 20 p
2. 15 p

1 vote
1. Movie 15 p

I just so happen to be up late:

I didn't see too much from this year, but I was able to think of a few movies that were good...

1) The LEGO Movie
2) Whiplash
3) The Babadook
4) Grand Budapest Hotel
5) X Men: Days of Future Past
6) Nightcrawler
7) Song of the Sea

And some that were just decent...

8) Foxcatcher
9) Guardians of the Galaxy
10) Intersteller
11) Hunger Games: Mockingjay--Part 1

The rest of the year was filled with films I just couldn't enjoy but kinda respected (Birdman, Boyhood), films that I could not understand the appeal for (American Sniper, Gone Girl), and just general disappointments (Dragons 2, Imitation Game).

Again, I may add to this list before voting ends.

Once again most of the movies I enjoyed this year are either blockbusters or big critical successes, so they don't need my votes to get in (my 2nd year in Brussels was a bit light in movie going), but I hope It Follows can get some love around here.

I really need to start watching more movies...

1. Boyhood (absolutely fantastic movie, one of the most unconventionally beautiful movies I've ever seen)
2. It Follows (one of my most original horror films I've seen. I typically hate horror, but this was flat out amazing)
3. The Grand Budapest Hotel (awesome movie, maybe my second or third favorite Anderson film ["Moonrise Kingdom" being my favorite])
4. Birdman (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (very good but a bit overrated, took itself a little too seriously for its own good)
5. Interstellar (very good, but the "the only thing that can escape gravity is...love" thing made my retinas permanently detach from being rolled so hard)

Other stuff I saw...

The LEGO Movie (much better than I expected)
Pride (good but not too memorable for me)
Nightcrawler (good but vastly overrated)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (not for me)
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (decent popcorn flick)
Gone Girl (very good movie, but Fincher has a couple better ones under his belt)

...and that's all I've seen from 2014.

1. Interstellar - loved it, was one of those films that made me want to watch more
2. Guardians of the Galaxy - cracking soundtrack and, bar the silly ending, it was great
3. Whiplash - terrific performance from Miles Teller, a movie that could motivate anyone
4. Gone Girl - seemed a bit much at times (the involvement of the press especially) but did enjoy the psychological aspect of it
5. The Imitation Game
6. Birdman
7. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
8. The Theory of Everything
9. The Inbetweeners 2
10. Edge of Tomorrow
11. The Lego Movie
12. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
13. 22 Jump Street
14. Lucy
15. Bad Neighbours

Boyhood got 7 #1 votes but six voters didn't give it a single point.

One of my (and especially Dexter's) favorites Leviathan by Andrey Zvyagintsev missed the final by only one point (in 2011 the former movie (Elena) by Zvyagintsev got six points less than #20 of its year.
I forgot to update my list but it wouldn't have changed a thing (Inherent Vice (my new #10) would have beaten Edge of Tomorrow, Tales of Grim Sleeper would have gotten more points but maybe still have missed top 50 and Whiplash would have gotten maybe one or two points more.

I will start the final thread tomorrow.
