The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread

Post by JimmyJazz » Fri Apr 01, 2016 6:00 am

Hello fellow AMers, and welcome to the 2016 edition of the Acclaimed Music Forum Artists Poll! This is the 4th edition of this poll in the forum’s history, and with so much new blood having joined, it is about time to revise this survey and celebration of our favorite bands and performers!

First however, the previous list from 2013 as a warm-up and example for comparison. I have also placed the 2010 and 2008 rankings for said artists in the brackets next to each artist:

So, anyways, the turn out for the previous lists have been at most 39 (and last time in 2013 it was just 35). As far as I’m concerned, we can all do much better than this. I really hope to get as many consistent members voting in this as possible, to really reflect our community and its diversity of tastes and preferences. If we can break the 50 voter mark, I will most definitely be pleased!

So, regardless of the above lists, remember to vote for your favorite artists, not for the “greatest” or “most influential”. Pick the artists whose music really means the most to you!

The formula that will be used is:
points = 100 * tan (11/90) / (tan ( (10+rank)/90) )

At the beginning of every week on Sundays, I will post an update on the numbers of submissions. I will also, starting immediately today, blast tons of users with a PM alerting them to this thread.

The deadline for your Top 100 Artists lists is June 30, by Midnight! PLEASE PM ME YOUR LISTS

Let the voting begin!!! :happy-partydance: :music-guitarred: :music-listening: :music-rockon:

I forgot to mention that you should feel free to (and heavily encouraged) to submit comments! I want the presentation to be very nice, pictures, blurbs, the works.

I have a nice little list planned, but it may take a few days to fully evaluate.

Swans and Tool will make huge leaps, with the former possibly entering my Top 10.

A little more rap may be present. I think Kendrick Lamar could rank very high. Not bad for a guy who's only been around five years.

But no matter which metric I used, my #1 pick was the same.

Can I vote for artists not known to produce works in the English language? say Edith Piaf, Celia Cruz, Amalia Rodrigues, Asha Bhosle, Umm Kulthum, Youssou N'Dour, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Os Mutantes, etc.? I feel they're underrepresented in the AM list and the forums.

Of course, why not? Jacques Brel actually made our top 100 last time!

By all means! Diversity in genre, era, and country is extremely desired on this end at least!

???...hmmm... I don't understand the reference? Can you explain ?

And thanks Jimmy, even if I wish you answer me: "No" How to put Beethoven between Lou Reed and Funkadelic?
I think, I will not put classical composers... but I still have 6 places for film music composers.

It's a reference to the American cartoon show Spongebob Squarepants, Romain. I grew up watching it as a kid, and I assume Bleu did too.

I would prefer if these were not included. I don't want to compare Beethoven to Bryan Adams. I see it as a poll for performing artists.

I will probably make a list of my 85 pop/rock/soul artists and then insert 15 performers of jazz or world music. I don't think i'll include performers of classical music.

I agree about excluding classical composers. Modern classical is fine in my book, like Steve Reich or Terry Riley.
I feel like that

It's always difficult to draw a clear line though, since I will include electronic artists and some of those aren't really 'performing' artists either...

Yeah, so what is it? Do we include Bach, Beethoven, Mozart or not? If not, does that mean modern composers such as Philip Glass, Igor Stravinsky and George Gershwin are a no-go too? Nobou Uematsu, Koji Kondo & Harry Gregson-Williams? John Williams, Hans Zimmer and Ennio Morricone?

I suggest we exclude those who have not made recordings (so no Bach, Beethoven and Mozart) because a music artist (commonly referred to as recording artist) is a musician and/or singer who records and releases music, often professionally, through a record label or independently.

I'm with Dexter on this. I think recording composers such as Gershwin, Glass, Ligeti, or Copland should be eligible because they physically conducted and/or played their own compositions.

Like Ravel, Debussy or Stavinsky. for example.. so, all the end of XIX and XXcentury's composers are allowed to be on the list?!

Currently, we have three ballots so far:

BleuPanda
JimmyJazz
Romain

A total of 74 different artists have received multiple votes at this point.

As for the question of classical artists to place on your lists, I would say feel free to put whoever you want on these lists, as long as they have been caught on record (aka recording artists). I personally didn't rank any classical artists because I treat this more as a poll of pop music acts, and I treat them as separate mediums outright, but that is entirely my own preference.

Is there a way you could put up a sample of what our lists should look like. I just want to submit a proper list.

It is easiest for me to rank it as:

Ranking | Artist

like:

1| The Beatles
2| Radiohead
3| Prince
and so forth.

Does that help, Zombeels?

Perfect. I wasn't sure if we should put Beatles or The Beatles or if it even mattered and what the limit was.

Can we hyperlink our list if it's on RateYourMusic? Mine isn't done, but I wanted to know in advance.

I have a list, but I'm writing little paragraphs for all the artists on my lists to make it more presentable.

I think you'll like some of the things I have to say about a few of them.

The listing of the acts does not matter, but the limit to what will be counted is 100, if you list anything else it will not be factored in.

Thanks for this, JimmyJazz. I've sent you my list. I've excluded classical artists - even "recording composers" like Debussy, Ravel and Shostakovich, because I can compare them to other classical composers but not to pop/rock/folk/jazz/blues/hip hop/world music artists.

I'm a fan of Biber. I mean the Baroque composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber. ;)
They give awards for that music? I thought just ear plugs. (Woody Allen in Annie Hall)

Probably no composers (the one's I've mentioned) for me too but my list is going to be eclectic. I have majority of artists in my mind right now but the hard part is ranking them, I'm going to take my sweet time considering that the deadline is still on June 30. I will add comments too.

What do you guys think of soundtrack composers, in relation to the other composers that have been mentioned?
Two songs play in my head over and over as the world ends: Father John Misty - "Pure Comedy" and Billie Eilish - "all the good girls go to hell."

They should be eligible, and would be great to have them. I'm having Bernard Herrmann and Ennio Morricone in mine, so go ahead and add whoever you like. Just so I'm not the only nerd. :teasing-lurk: ;)

Cool, but I mean, is it a good idea though? Since we're sort of shunning Beethoven, Mozart, etc., and we're sort of on the fence with Debussy, Gershwin, etc.

The thing is I'm including them for their recordings which just so happened to be captured on film in most cases. Gershwin played the piano on the 1924 recording of Rhapsody in Blue, for an example, so therefore he should be eligible for HIS recordings, not Ella Fitzgerald's, not Leonard Bernstein's, etc. The issue with Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven is that while they composed, they never recorded them. Did all the previous make sense in what I'm trying to convey. Of course, it's JimmyJazz's ruling that will truly effect their positions on the poll.

Okay. I'm still a bit confused, but I know what I am going to do now. Thanks, babydoll.

I started to make my list :music-listening:

This should be the most difficult list to do. I hope no one forget any artist who is important in their lists, although these oversights can usually happen.

It would be amazing to get in 50 lists mark!
