Portishead - Mysterons

Favorite discovery: Kraftwerk's Europe Endless. Something about it just makes me endlessly happy, the type of track I can turn on to get in a better mood.

The Great Curve is also great, and it's unfortunate it has to face off against the song that inspired me to run this in the first place.

NYILYBYBMD was the inspiration because it's such an interesting case; it isn't acclaimed, but the LCD Soundsystem fanbase loves it and it essentially is one of their signature songs. It's actually the song they closed their 'final' concert with, as it's essentially a perfect closer, and they also closed the concert I saw with it. So it actually surprises me that it isn't on AM yet, when other non-singles such as Dance Yrself Clean and All I Want are so high.

It was eliminated a while back, but I'd never really been into "Warsawza" by Bowie until this tourney. And I'll pour one out for "A House Is Not a Motel", may it rest in peace.

Radiohead - Climbing Up the Walls

Talking Heads - The Great Curve

Portishead - Mysterons

Favourite discovery: Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should've Come Over. Somehow I've been put off Grace before, but now I'll be listening with re-educated ears. (Loses out here to my favourite song in the tournament.)

Pleased to see the progress of Mysterons as Dummy is in my top 10 all-time, but Spanish Bombs :(

Discussion: First off, I am quite sad that "Europe Endless" didn't make it to this round. Out of the top 16, that was probably my favorite track. Um, so the tracks that I "discovered"... I liked listening more closely to a moderately acclaimed Beatles track, it turned out to be a sort-of mini "Bohemian Rhapsody." Besides that one, I think my favorite find was the Talking Heads track ("The Great Curve"). It makes me want to dive back into Remain in Light, which I've always been "meh" on.
Ooh, almost forgot, that Joy Division track was also pretty good! I've always been meh on them as well.

Visions (worst matchup by far)

Climbing Up the Walls (it was my pick to win the tournament but Soul Love keeps rolling along...this should be a close matchup)

The Great Curve (I love both songs but clearly prefer this one. Surprised to see it's sort of a blowout so far)

You Never Give Me Your Money (I prefer Dummy to Abbey Road, but this is my favorite song on Abbey Road and in my top five for The Beatles. Mysterons is a good track but not something I'd listen to outside the album)

My choice for the final victory would have been "Spanish Bombs," the highest ranked song on my all time list (#19) among the songs featured in this (fantastic) game. But sadly it was also the only one that did not pass to quarterfinals among the songs I voted for on the Final 16. It needed a tie-breaker to be eliminated though. I thought it would have been a stronger contender to "You Never Give Me Your Money" than "Mysterons" but… who knows? Right now Portishead are winning...

There was no real "discoveries" for me in this game (I already knew all the songs) but there were two songs that were a real pleasure for me to revisit. These songs were David Bowie's "Warszawa" (especially for the sublime vocal part predating for many years the Balkan music trend) and Neil Young's "Birds" (a delicate miniature only backed by piano and breezy Laurel Canyon vocal harmonies).

1. Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should've Come Over
vs.
3. Stevie Wonder - Visions

6. Radiohead - Climbing Up the Walls
vs.
2. David Bowie - Soul Love

7. LCD Soundsystem - New York I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down
vs.
4. Talking Heads - The Great Curve

8. Portishead - Mysterons
vs.
5. The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money

1 1960s, 2 1970s, 1 1980s, 3 1990s and 1 2000s. Much more spread than the original AM Top 128, isn't it?

Favorite song I couldn't vote for: The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money

As for discoveries, I also already knew all of these songs, but there were a handful I had to hear again before I remembered them. Strangely enough, one of these was "Soul Love." It had been quite a while since I'd heard "Ziggy," and I recognized it just as soon as it started, but it was always one of my least favorites from the album. (My favorite by far is "Moonage Daydream." Whenever I hear the last two minutes, I feel like I've been transported back in time and into the future simultaneously.) However, since I revisit each of these songs every week they advance, "Soul Love" has really grown on me, now separated from the context of the album. I especially enjoy the sax interlude, so much so that I looked it up online to see who played it - only to discover it was Bowie himself! (I shouldn't have been surprised.) I don't think I've voted for it yet, since at the beginning of the tournament, I was still ambivalent toward it; and the past handful of weeks it's come up against personal favorites (including my own nominations, "She Watch Channel Zero?!" and, now, "Climbing Up the Walls"). We'll see what happens this week, because if it does defeat Radiohead's creepiest song, it will depend on who it faces between Stevie (another personal favorite) and Buckley (a very good song, but "Soul Love" would now get my vote) in the final four.

My favourite (re-)discoveries of this tournament include Pavement's "In the Mouth a Desert", John Lennon's "Oh My Love", the Talking Heads' "The Great Curve", the Strokes' "Barely Legal", Otis Redding's version of "Satisfaction" and Roxy Music's "Grey Lagoons" that unfortunately got eliminated in the first round, but might just be my favourite of the whole tournament tied with "You Never Give Me Your Money".
