Individual Artist Poll: David Bowie

Post by BleuPanda »

For David Bowie, I will do a top x song list (number dependent on how many songs pass a certain threshold of points), along with however many albums get at least a single vote. Everyone should vote in this topic up to their top 25 songs and top 10 albums (note that you can choose to vote for less songs down to a minimum of 15, but you must vote for exactly 10 albums). These numbers might change depending on the artist.

The Deadline will be July 31st, 2016. The results will be shared at the beginning of August. Whether or not the results have been revealed, the next artist poll will be posted on August 1st. David Bowie is the pick for this month due to his passing earlier this year.

If you change your list, please post it in a new post (otherwise I might miss it).

We are currently discussing the point distribution in the main Artist Poll topic. I will post it here once we have agreed upon the formula.

Also, unlike Radiohead, David Bowie has a few notable collaborations. How are we feeling about that? Plenty of us have voted for Under Pressure, and I'm sure everyone is okay with that. Where should we draw the line? For example, he's featured on Arcade Fire's Reflektor, which would easily place in my top 10, but I also don't consider it a Bowie song. I also decided against the Love is Lost remix, because I feel that's more in James Murphy's production than Bowie's contribution (though I'm fine with others voting for it). I think a good limit would be if David Bowie is directly credited as a main artist. (So "Queen and David Bowie" works but "Reflektor" credited as just Arcade Fire does not).

This will be a headache when we get to Kanye West...

If it was songs that feature David Bowie Reflektor would be my no.2 but that's definitely not a Bowie song. While a seismic change it's definitely still Arcade Fire with a big Murphy influence. Under Pressure and Love is lost remix still very much Bowie. There may be things in between that are less clear, but can't think of a good example at the minute.

Anyone have suggestions for the best Bowie deep cuts? I'm interested to hear some gems outside of the songs ranked on AM or featured on his major albums.

"Bring Me the Head of the Disco King" is a great slice of latter day Bowie and a great song in itself.

Wow! I'm amazed at the AM forumers who can immediately rank the top 10 Bowie albums. He had, I think, 7-8 total masterpieces that it's hard to rank them subjectively without listening to them all over again. So expect my vote on the last day.

Oh, what counts as a major album...anyway: Liza Jane, See Emily Play, Candidate [demo] (unrelated to another song called "Candidate"), Fascination, Tonight, Time Will Crawl, Strangers When We Meet, Little Wonder, I Would Be Your Slave, Boss of Me, How Does the Grass Grow?

Besides what I already listed on this page

I'm sorry for the answer because I know it's not really a good song but i'm totally in love with "Thursday's Child". Goosebump each times I hear the song :

I'm voting! I swear! The songs list is just a bit difficult, but I promise to vote! Plus you should always expect a list from me towards the end.

No worries, babydoll. I'm having the same problem - while the top ten albums are set, going back through Bowie's discography to make sure there isn't a song I've overlooked is bit more exhausting than it was for Radiohead.

Hi, Bleupanda, I'm still working on my list but now I want to post the list of Pepe Mallent, my best friend. Hope this list could be included even if Pepe is not a Forum member. He is a big fan and an absolute expert on David Bowie and he has succeeded to transmit his love to his kids. In fact the following list is a collaborative effort between Pepe and his son and daughter, Pepe and Pilar. Pilar even draw a wonderful comic book based on the lyirics of "Life on Mars?" that earned her a price.

Pepe and me are very good friends since we met each other at a surgical theatre almost 20 years ago. We worked at the same hospital (he's plastic surgeon and I'm an ophthalmologist). We were co-operating a patient and I was amazed at the music selection he had compiled. We formed a just-for-fun covers band with other doctors of the Hospital and since then I've been honoured with his friendship during all these years (Pepe was so kind that he uploaded a video in Youtube with some pictures of us named A Beautiful Friendship: Honorio & Pepe).

Being both big fans of Bowie we have covered many Bowie songs throughout the years, we even played some shows only with Bowie songs, first with our band and years later in a tribute with many other musicians of our town. From the rehearsals of these tribute shows I wanted to show you two recordings of Pepe and me playing some Bowie songs:
1) Where Are We Now? (2014 rehearsal)
The sound on this one is excellent, we rehearsed in a recording studio and Pepe and me were backed by some of the best musicians on our city, Salva Ortiz, Nacho Mañó and José Luis Macías. It was a first take, something that can be noticed in my insecure, tentative and imperfect guitar solo (I'm quite proud instead of my guitar on the first half of the song). Pepe's vocals were great.
2) Moonage Daydream (2007 rehearsal)
The sound on this one is much worse (all the band playing live on the rehearsal studio around an only mic) and the backing band was not as good as the previous one. My guitar solo was only slightly better than the previous song but I wanted to upload this song just to show you how good is Pepe as a singer, his voice is mixed low but you can listen quite well to his vocal range and his singing expressivity.

Well, and without further ado, here it is the Blue-Eyed Mallent Family's Bowie List:

Albums:

1. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

Fun fact: There is one song ranked on AM and two bubblers that still haven't received any votes.

We're currently at 22 lists received with 7ish days left to vote; for Radiohead we received 35.
