I thought about this possibility when I was voting (Refused are Swede, aren't they?). Strange things happening to the H-Duo. What could be next? Henrik jumping in defence of "Loveless"?

Nothing I really dislike but overall much weaker week than the previous 4.

16. Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country
vs.
10. Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath

14. Gerry and the Pacemakers - Ferry Cross the Mersey
vs.
8. Wire - Map Ref. 41 Deg. N 93 Deg. W

11. The Go-Betweens - Streets of Your Town
vs.
4. Fleetwood Mac - Man of the World

3. The Zombies - A Rose for Emily
vs.
2. Elliott Smith - Say Yes
Really tough draw. Say Yes is not my very favorite Elliott Smith song (would close the top 10 most likely) but he is my favorite artist of all time, and that's the one song that stopped me in my tracks and made me start listening to him, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. If one song in this bracket deserves to beat it, it's probably A Rose for Emily though.

1. Refused - New Noise
vs.
7. Whodini - Friends
New Noise was my #26 song of all time last time we had a poll so yeah, Whodini pretty much didn't have a chance to start with. Beside that, it might be a bit unfair, but Friends suffers from having a way better song having used pretty much the exact same intrumental (Nas - If I Ruled the World), the comparison especially hurts in the lyrics and flow side.

9. Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels
vs.
6. Air France - Collapsing at Your Doorstep
Collapsing at Your Doorstep is one of the very few songs that seems to conjure up the same kind of magic as Since I Left You. A lot have tried, very few have succeeded.

5. Daniel Johnston - Some Things Last a Long Time
vs.
15. Pink Floyd - Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun

12. First Aid Kit - Emmylou

Took the words right out of my mouth on this one, Nassim.
I recognised the sample immediately, but the words were all wrong :) Just one more thing : I thought the lyrics were the undeniable quality that helped hip-hop stay above the rest. Not in this case, matey.

No songs I really dislike this week, either (although I'll admit I'm not the biggest Green Day fan), but no all-time favorites, either...

3. Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country 8
vs.
5. Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath 7

6. Gerry and the Pacemakers - Ferry Cross the Mersey 7

8. The Zombies - A Rose for Emily 7
vs.
14. Elliott Smith - Say Yes 6

11. Refused - New Noise 7
vs.
2. Whodini - Friends 8

(Like others, I prefer "If I Ruled the World," but Whodini were pioneers in the era where it all started.)

Incredibly strong week overall.

2 Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country
vs.
11 Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath

Seems appropriate that these two songs would compete - even though the Aphex Twin song is completely outpaced.

10 Gerry and the Pacemakers - Ferry Cross the Mersey
vs.
15 Wire - Map Ref. 41 Deg. N 93 Deg. W

Gerry sounds just like Macca here. The title of the Wire song had me hoping for something weirder than the "meh" song I got.

13 The Go-Betweens - Streets of Your Town
vs.
9 Fleetwood Mac - Man of the World

Love the guitar sounds on both of these - but I think the old school Fleetwood song takes it. Wow.

3 The Zombies - A Rose for Emily
vs.
1 Elliott Smith - Say Yes

Possibly the strongest matchup of the tournament thus far - it would have made a satisfying final. But "Say Yes" has the best bridge in any song that I know of, so I'll decide it off of that.

6 Refused - New Noise
vs.
16 Whodini - Friends

Holy shit I've listened to The Shape of Punk to Come before but it never "hit" me until now - and oh my god is it amazing. Discovery of the week.

14 Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels
vs.
12 Air France - Collapsing at Your Doorstep

This forum has convinced me of many things but Tears for Fears has never been one. Yeah, some of their songs can be great on a writing level but the actual recordings just sound awful to me.

7 Daniel Johnston - Some Things Last a Long Time
vs.
8 Pink Floyd - Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun

This was a hard matchup. My favorite song by an artist I don't adore or a lesser song by one of my all-time favorites? But Johnston just barely clinched it in the long run.

4 First Aid Kit - Emmylou
vs.
5 Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia

The most fascinating thing about these song vs. song tournaments is how much of a disparity between two songs you can get. I mean, while "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country" and "Analogue Bubblebath" may exist in the same sphere, something like this, the previous match-up, or "New Noise" vs. "Friends" occupy such different spheres. Here you have one of the sweetest, simplest little love songs versus a nine minute narrative epic. It feels almost unfair to give the edge to Green Day, what with the sheer scope of the piece. But it nails it perfectly - what a song. I've known every word to it for ten years now, which I can say for very few things. But then again, "Emmylou" so perfectly nails what it is that it wants to be. Hmmm... One more listen before I decide. Alright, "Emmylou" clinches it.

Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country
vs.
Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath

What a harsh match-up, the two most acclaimed artists of the "IDM" universe played off against each other. I'd love both of them to continue, voting for my own nomination never felt more thankless.

Gerry and the Pacemakers - Ferry Cross the Mersey

7. Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country
vs.
4. Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath
Difficult, because they both are types of electronic music I like. Analogue Bubblebath, however, seems to achieve more in a shorter time. There seem to be many things going on there.

13. Gerry and the Pacemakers - Ferry Cross the Mersey
vs.
14. Wire - Map Ref. 41 Deg. N 93 Deg. W
I love the brave attempt of Wire to come up with the least memorable song title in music history, but I was a bit disappointed by the track itself. I only know Wire from the Pink Flag album, but every minute of that is more unique than this week's selection. Not that it is a bad song, but these guys can do more. Gerry and the Pacemakers can't do much more and Ferry Cross the Mersey is not one of the great achievements of music history, but it works and is likable.

10. The Go-Betweens - Streets of Your Town
vs.
8. Fleetwood Mac - Man of the World
Surprisingly difficult. Streets of Your Town is pop done really well, but Man of the World creates an atmosphere through music that later Fleetwood Mac couldn't and didn't even try to match.

15. The Zombies - A Rose for Emily
vs.
9. Elliott Smith - Say Yes
I thought I had never listened to Elliott Smith before, but it turns out I knew Say Yes. A good song, whereas I probably will never get the praise for The Zombies, who are present this week with another of their decent songs, with little to it.

2. Refused - New Noise
vs.
12. Whodini - Friends
I would have loved to vote for Friends, which is a very good hiphop track, but New Noise is a beast. The best discovery of the week for me.

16. Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels
vs.
3. Air France - Collapsing at Your Doorstep
I think Tears for Fears are only slightly above average as a band, but Head Over Heels is far from their most interesting songs. Collapsing at Your Doorstep has indeed the appeal of Since I Left You, like Nassim says. Maybe it is just as good or - whisper it - even better.

6. Daniel Johnston - Some Things Last a Long Time
vs.
11. Pink Floyd - Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun
Pink Floyd set a nice atmosphere, but Some Things Last a Long Time is a delightfully weird song in an understated way.

5. First Aid Kit - Emmylou
vs.
1. Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia
I see Jesus of Suburbia is getting crushed here. It's the first of my three nominations we come across here and my favorite. In fact, it is a top 25 song for me. Now I won't deny the elegance and beauty of Emmylou, that is a very good song too. But Jesus of Suburbia felt fresh when I heard it first years ago and this week proved once again that it can still move me from top to bottom.

What makes it such a stand-out in the Green Day catalog (and I think it is the best thing they ever done by some measure) is that it is not only the most ambitious thing they ever done, but that against all odds they make it work. Their other few attempts at such a long song weren't near as successful, but this is the first you would hear if you go through Green Day's albums chronically. For me, it showed that the punk style could be epic and big too, without losing its power. The genre favors short and punchy songs and purists sniff at long songs like Jesus of Suburbia, but I would say it paved a new way for a genre that seemed to have worn out its options. The mix between punk song and a more musical-style longform music consisting of something similar of suites is fresh and innovative, but above all it gets my pulse moving.

It achieves for me both what long-form music and the punk song try to achieve. I treasure long-form music because it can bring together many musical movements into one whole and who would have thought that of all bands Green Day could pull it off so organically and so elegantly. But it works as punk too, because it is filled with power, rage, simple chords an clear lyrics. Sure the lines can seem a bit juvenile once you get older, but they are brought with so much passion that it still works.

American Idiot is one of those albums that is simultaneously a modern classic and an album that many people love to hate. I get the arguments against it, but I think it is a masterpiece and Jesus of Suburbia is it's greatest achievement.

Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country
vs.
Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath

This is easily the strongest matchup this week for me. I was unfamiliar with each song, but both were tremendous and required multiple listens before I could pick. The Boards of Canada track wins by being all at once soothing, spooky, invigorating, and uplifting. It certainly stands as one of my favorite discoveries this tournament. Long ago when I first attempted to get into electronic music, I tried listening to Music Has the Right to Children but gave up partway through. Time to revisit it and, perhaps, some more Boards of Canada records.

Gerry and the Pacemakers - Ferry Cross the Mersey
vs.
Wire - Map Ref. 41 Deg. N 93 Deg. W

The Go-Betweens - Streets of Your Town
vs.
Fleetwood Mac - Man of the World

The Zombies - A Rose for Emily
vs.
Elliott Smith - Say Yes

This was a tough matchup, as Odyssey & Oracle is my favorite '60s record, but there are other songs from it I would have preferred to see in this tournament. As one of my favorite Elliott Smith songs, "Say Yes" takes the cake.

Refused - New Noise
vs.
Whodini - Friends

Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels
vs.
Air France - Collapsing at Your Doorstep

Daniel Johnston - Some Things Last a Long Time
vs.
Pink Floyd - Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun

First Aid Kit - Emmylou
vs.
Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia

Another great matchup, and a great review of "Jesus of Suburbia" by Rob. Really hit the nail on the head.
I just wanted to be one of those ghosts

And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
