The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
I like how we come up with new ideas to pass the time!
My unacclaimed artists (tho correct me if I'm wrong):
Umm Kulthum
Miriam Makeba
Asha Bhosle
Amalia Rodrigues
Lata Mangeshkar
Rodrigo y Gabriela
Yumi Matsutoya
In ranking my artists I relied mostly on songs heard through youtube or streaming sites for non-English artists and albums for artists recording in (or primarily in) English. I now have voter's remorse on my AMF Top 500 Songs entries in which I did not vote for any songs from artists categorized as world-music artists. As a then first time voter, maybe I was trying to "fit in". Now I think I kinda get what Bleu was trying to say.

Six artists in my top 100 are unlisted on AM:
46. Anna Netrebko: Russian classical singer. I didn't include classical musicians, with this one exception.
58. Cristina Branco: Portuguese fado singer. (I've considered Amalia Rodrigues, but Branco is more my personal favorite.)
68. Noa: Singer from Israel who combines folk music from different cultures with pop and rock.
69. Ashanti: R&B singer who was very popular for a brief period.
73. Gloria Estefan: Cuban-American singer of Latin pop. Miami Sound Machine is listed but unranked; the solo artist is unlisted.
86. The Corrs: Irish folk rock band with good live concerts.

Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
While listing my artists that aren’t on AM, I discovered a major problem with the way I did my calculations. I thought by just using songs and not albums, I was putting everyone on a level playing field. This turned out not to be true, since I only rate songs that are absolute personal favorites, somewhat acclaimed, or are “hits” (the latter is just something I’ve always done). Since I don’t rate every song I hear, and I didn’t penalize artists for “bad” songs, this gave pop artists who have been big in the States an unfair advantage and hurt World artists tremendously. I’m embarrassed to see I only have 2 artists who could truly be considered World music in my Top 100. (This bothers me far more than having so many acclaimed artists on my list; especially since, if I’d grown up in another country, these “hits” that I’ve ranked would’ve been considerably different.) Conversely, in the honorable mentions that I also included (which weren’t based on calculations, but just artists I love) there are 10. Next time, I need to include albums, as well, since many of my all-time favorite albums are by World music artists, and I can always make adjustments for the pre-sixties artists as Dan has. (Of course, what I would like to do is compile a list based solely on how I “feel” about artists and not worry about stats, but I’ve tried this before and it’s too difficult to compare artists from totally different genres.)
Anyway, my 10 artists not on AM are dominated by the pop metal bands I mentioned earlier and pre-electronic artists from the ‘90s (which I began listening to when I discovered I wasn’t a big fan of guitar-driven “indie” rock). Ironically, the artist on my list I believe to be most universally reviled is Evanescence – and they actually are on AM because of “Bring Me To Life.”
Nightwish, Rebecca St. James, Delerium, Within Temptation, Hooverphonic, Bourgeois Tagg, Cold, Deep Forest, Gene Loves Jezebel, Mushroomhead
(Of all of these, the only ones I think might connect with a lot of people are Delerium, Hooverphonic and Deep Forest. The rest are purely personal taste.)

Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
My 9 unacclaimed artists. Mostly old favorites from my angsty teenage years:
4. Thrice
Words in the Water is my favorite song of the 2010s. Such a versatile band. Some of their best songs are heavy, others are quiet and gorgeous, and they have pretty much everything in between. Most people don't realize that and forgot about them after Deadbolt 14 years ago.
9. Avenged Sevenfold
In my [unpopular] opinion, the melodies in Avenged Sevenfold's choruses are easily the best in the history of metal. The Rev (RIP) was a phenomenal drummer, and they have so many fantastic guitar solos. They were my favorite band by far throughout my teenage years.
38. Finch
The end of What It Is to Burn (after the screaming) is possibly the most powerful 40 seconds of music I've ever heard. I love the rest of the album too.
72. A Perfect Circle
The climax in 3 Libras is incredible, and so is Passive
73. Incubus
Nostalgia played into this for sure, but Make Yourself and A Crow Left of the Murder are good albums
75. Rise Against
Prayer of the Refugee's verses are some of my favorites ever
91. Jack Johnson
Great music for relaxing with friends in nice weather
93. Macklemore
He takes a lot of heat for all his dumb novelty songs, but I love a lot of his more serious ones like Same Love, and early ones like The Town
95. Brand New
Deja Entendu is a great album
Searched to see if Thrice has ever been mentioned on the forums before...Nassim, good to see I'm not the only fan of Thrice and Finch!

Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
I kind of feel rude asking, but any idea when this will start? Just curious, since I believe we're past the initial planned start time.
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
I deeply apologize folks, but life is very busy on my end, with boxes everywhere and busy worklife. Bad timing of a massive poll with hectic personal life. Results are coming, but I frankly can't give a good estimation. I am hurrying as fast as I can all things considered.

Here are the artists from my list that are unranked/not listed.
47 John Mayer listed but not ranked
53 Marina and the Diamonds
90 George Strait
95 Toby Keith
I was hard pressed to find any modern day country artists in the top 1000 however, there are many country pioneers such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Merle Haggard. There are even some Alt Country artists like Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and Ryan Adams. Taylor Swift is in the top 1000 but most of her acclaim seems to have come from after she jumped off the country ship!!
I am shocked that "Gravity" or "Say" do not show in the songs section!!

Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
That's unsurprising to people accustomed to lists included here. I believe there are three main reasons for the moderate acclaim of country music on this website:Neil wrote: I was hard pressed to find any modern day country artists in the top 1000 however, there are many country pioneers such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Merle Haggard. - The fact that most of the lists come from critics more interested in rock music and its various subgenres than country. It's only speculation, but when it comes to country music it seems they are mostly interested into the pioneers whose work had some influence on the development of rock, and country acts who interacted with rock culture in one way or another (such as Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons or Steve Earle). Another guess of mine is that modern country might be perceived as "too conservative" and therefore shows a lack of innovation that may hinder its acclaim? As I've not studied the subject deeply, I can only speculate.
- The lack of country-exclusive lists; it seems country-exclusive publications are rarely making lists, or at least few of them have reached this community. Country-exclusive lists from non-country exclusive publications aren't included, as per the established rule that Henrik only includes lists from recognized specialists of one particular genre.
- The fact that non-American critics, and there's quite a few lists from them included on AM, rarely care about country music, aside from a few big names like Cash, Willie Nelson and sometimes Parsons or Waylon Jennings. Why that? I suppose mostly because it's a genre that's overall less successful and therefore less well-known and studied abroad, alongside the fact that its themes and roots are generally "too American".
Henrik's formulas are conceived to correct biases as much as possible, but I suppose the lack of appearance of the genre in lists can only be corrected to some extent.

Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
Thank you Pierre for the insight.
It makes perfect sense that modern country artists are not critically acclaimed. Many of the genre's songs are formulaic and have very few common themes. It is a shame though because I very much enjoy country music.
There are not as many critics lists in comparison to their rock and pop counterparts. I completely support Henrik's methods and I enjoy this site very much. it is interesting that country is deemed "too American" for most other parts of the world. Country is an essential part of rock in my estimation. Yes, the songs are very story oriented and in many cases do not offer anything earth shattering in terms of thinking outside the box. It is very tried and true!! Cut and dried with some exceptions. I love how AM takes all the lists of the world, whether penned by critics or fan favorites. It is very inclusive and representative.
I am interested in knowing how others calculate their lists. I envision large massive spreadsheets with formulas as long as my arm. Music is so subjective and hard to quantify in those terms. I certainly applaud those that spend hours taking time to assign a point value system, sending favorites to the top. I am embarrassed to say, my approach is much more simplistic + I was pressed for time, a day before the deadline. Some people are influenced by how the music makes them feel rather than than artistic merit. I feel I fall into that category of feeling. For me, I have a simple equation, who do I listen to the most? That is what my list represents. I do wonder though if I were to choose a more detailed/complex system, would the results be any different?
Is anybody willing to share their methods? I am very interested in hearing about them.

What country artists do you like? My personal favorite is Kacey Musgraves. Sturgill Simpson is also pretty good.Neil wrote:It makes perfect sense that modern country artists are not critically acclaimed. By the way, I love John Mayer's Continuum, great soft-rock/soul-rock.

Yeah, I'm surprised about the formulaic statement, too, especially considering that John Mayer is one of the worst offenders of this.prosecutorgodot wrote:What country artists do you like? I do the same thing. I have a playlist of around 6000 songs I like, and I copy and pasted it into a spreadsheet, and then categorized to list artists by descending total play count. I made a few small adjustments afterwards, but that was the foundation. For me, I have a simple equation, who do I listen to the most? That is what my list represents.
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
Hi Babydoll,
I don't mean that in a negative way. It is very true that many country songs are formulaic in their lyrics and meaning. Please, don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore country music. Yes, John Mayer is also guilty as are a lot of other artists. It does not mean they don't inspire me or move me. I don't have a musical bone in my body and can't carry a tune. I feel guilty about trying to critique anything to do with music. I know that general statements like that may incite anger and that is not my intent. Please forgive me!! I didn't think the point of this poll is to criticize others tastes in music but, just to discuss and talk about it. I am sure that many will disagree with my tastes, but that is ok. I know each person is different and will have very specific likes and dislikes. I'm sorry if I offended you!

Don't apologize. There were no offending anywhere. Just say what you want and don't look back (unless you're being a jerk which you aren't). I was just pointing out something that didn't seem to mesh with your statement. And remember that music is for everybody.Neil wrote:Hi Babydoll,

Yes it is, and, it is amazing how many people I know that don't care for it. Truly sad!! It's just a concept that I don't understand. It's nice to meet you btw!! I'm Neil!! Duh!! I need to respond to Andy and Prosecutorgodot...I am having such a hard time with this. I have wrote these long novels only to find they did not post...talk about being deflated!! It's like somebody just punctured my gigantic Birthday balloon on my B=Day and stomped on it. ha ha

If anyone wants to, you can shorten my screen-name to "Godot" if you want. I know my name is a bit longer than most haha. I named myself after a character in the game Ace Attorney.
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
Hey Godot!!
I am not familiar with the game, Ace Attorney although, it sounds interesting. What is the main objective? My last video games were basically Atari and Coleco Vision! ha ha. Guess i am showing my age. I love Kacey Musgraves. I instantly fell in love with Same Trailer, Different Park!! The fact that I grew up in a trailer park has nothing to do with it. ha ha My top country faves include some classics and not so classics. As already discussed in my prior post, George Strait and Toby Keith rank 3 and 4 on my list. Taylor Swift has worked her way into my top spot even though she is no longer country...but that is where she got her start and in my opinion, much of her best work comes from. Dolly Parton is # 2, this is where all that feeling and emotion comes into play!! Johnny Cash rounds out my top 5.

Hi Andy,
I am glad to know that somebody else uses this as the foundation of their top artists. I felt so inadequate after reading many posts that described very complex formulas for ranking top artists or so I imagine. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the question I posed. I definitely applaud those that give all that time in their rankings. It shows a very strong commitment. I applaud that. I guess I am just a simple guy.

Wow, interesting list. Taylor at #1! Dolly has a beautiful voice, I remember seeing her old surgeried face on Hannah Montana, feeling very skeptical of her music, but all of that went away when I listened to her old stuff. Of course I love Johnny.Neil wrote:Hey Godot!!

Same Trailer Different Park is my favorite country album. Brilliant songwriting.
Ace Attorney is basically a detective game: solve the case! Play as a lawyer in investigating the crime scene for evidence, then proving your points with your evidence in court. Along the way, you get great dialogue, colorful character development, and fantastic drama/story. There have been 5 main games in the series so far, and 2 spin-offs. You should try it! The game is on DS.
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
I still have The Illusion of Safety as my #45 album of all time, there's really nothing quite like it, both hard-hitting and very melodic. That being said I don't listen to much Thrice beside that album, a bunch of song from Identity Crisis and the Artist in the Ambulance. Don't think I have listened to anything released after the first Alchemy Index though.andyd1010 wrote: 73. Incubus
Nostalgia played into this for sure, but Make Yourself and A Crow Left of the Murder are good albums
Searched to see if Thrice has ever been mentioned on the forums before...Nassim, good to see I'm not the only fan of Thrice and Finch!
Finch is mostly a 2 songs band for me, Worms of the Universe and of course What It Is To Burn. 2 great songs though, that puts them in the Yellowcard league
My favorite Incubus is S.C.I.E.N.C.E. which is kind of like an updated version of a Faith No More album with funky bass, dj scratch, samples but mostly a great vocal performance and incredible drums. I like some of their latter stuff, but only Anna Molly compares positively to that album.
I removed both Thrice and Incubus from my list this year to make some space for new entrants, thinking that no one would vote for them anyway.
Regarding how I do my list, I apply the (old) AM artist formula to my songs and albums list and get a first draft, then I shuffle things around if I think a band is too high or low (whether it's for a concrete reason, like incredible live performances, or just a gut feeling).
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
When I first discovered this site I had a similar feeling of inadequacy. I remember complaining that forum games had rules that were way too complicated, and (unlike you) I even moaned about how people overthought their ranking methods. I was like, "What the fuck, man? Do you need a degree in statistics to participate in this forum? Shouldn't appreciation of music be about how you feel about an artist, album or song, instead of it being about numbers?" But I was in denial about the part of me that loved statistics, the part of me that was drawn to this site that ranked music. The site spoke directly to the 10-year-old boy in me who listened to UK and Billboard charts on South African radio and gave a score to each of the songs he listened to. By now I have learned to embrace complicated formulas which help me to rank artists and music, and I agree with what jamieW and others have said about music styles being too varied to compare to one another without the help of formulas/calculations.Neil wrote:I am interested in knowing how others calculate their lists. I envision large massive spreadsheets with formulas as long as my arm. Music is so subjective and hard to quantify in those terms... I felt so inadequate after reading many posts that described very complex formulas for ranking top artists
I was going to try and explain my method for ranking artists to you, but I now realise that it's too subjective and elaborate to explain properly. But I admit that it seems obvious to me now that I should've paid more attention to how I feel about artists while ranking them for this poll. For example, Beck is #28 on my list, but I feel that he should be quite a bit lower. Having said that, my ranking calculations remind me that I really like his albums "Mutations", "Sea Change" and "Odelay", and that "Midnight Vultures" and "Guero" don't deserve the backlash they received from some corners of the music audience. Calculations vs Feeling. Something's gotta give, right?
Sometimes I think people are too worried about offending others when they make statements about music. Sure, appreciation of music is a deeply personal thing and people who love music feel very passionate about their favourite artists, but I don't think anyone on this forum ever really aims to offend anyone else. When someone says something negative about an artist, album or song I like, I roll my eyes and think "whatever dude", but then I immediately remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion and that I shouldn't feel offended just because I disagree with them.Neil wrote:I am sure that many will disagree with my tastes, but that is ok. I know each person is different and will have very specific likes and dislikes. I'm sorry if I offended
Anyway, Neil, I'm really pleased that you have gathered the courage to start posting. When I first joined the forum many years ago, I felt like a complete novice compared to some other people, but I posted my lists and my thoughts reagardless of that, while at the same time learning a great deal from others. Here's hoping more "lurkers" would do the same.
...will keep us together.
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
Love that combo. A common theme among my unacclaimed favorites. I like Thrice's first 3 albums as well, and I would put Beggars and Alchemy Index on that tier too. think Major/Minor and Vheissu are fantastic albums, and I'd place them a tier higher...Funny you mention Yellowcard. They were briefly my favorite band about 10 years ago but have since faded from my top 100. Curious as to what the 2nd song is if you think they have 2 great songs. I assume Ocean Avenue. Then Way Away?Nassim wrote:both hard-hitting and very melodic
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
At least on my end, the statistical approach to ranking artists is largely due to my obsession with statistics and Excel sheets. Half the reason I did the song poll last year was because I wanted an excuse to make a massive excel file. Ranking artists through formulas is a combination of my two hobbies (and even then, I massively rearranged my list when I submitted it. My #1 on the list I submitted is only #11 in my current spreadsheet, since my #1 artist is at a disadvantage purely through number of releases).
I've now decided to give 100 artists additional points on my excel file without a song or album source, simply due to the obvious fact that I like them more than the numbers show; a lot of the acts I chose are bands who simply didn't release much material, but what they did I love. My formula benefits long-runners too much. Now the question I have to ask is, how much of a benefit should these artists receive?
Edit: Also, why do people keep putting lurker in quotes? It's a rather commonly used term for people who regularly view message boards but don't directly participate. There are even studies on internet use that use the term; it's not a negative moniker, and I'm sure everyone here does it, if not on this site then on others.

I suspect this has to do with where in the world you live. Maybe in America lurker is a word solely associated with Internet culture? Here in the UK people not only associate that word with Internet culture but also with real-life interaction. A lurker can be a real-life creepy motherfucker over here. Hence the negative moniker.BleuPanda wrote:Edit: Also, why do people keep putting lurker in quotes? Sorry if this comes across as a bit bitchy towards my fellow English-speaking AMers, but I'm always amazed at how gracious our numerous European and South American friends who don't speak English as a first language are about these kinds of conversations - not only do they not ask what the word "lurker" means, they also don't question what the fuss is about it being lurker or "lurker".

Okay everyone, the calculating has been finished, and I am going to finally get this thing rolling tomorrow. Sorry for the constant delays, this poll has been badly timed over on my end!
Speaking of the final results, I will forwarn you all: there are some peculiar, unusual, and, quite frankly, stupid rankings in this list. Somewhat vindicating Bleu's point earlier in this thread, the wide polling, while producing some pleasant surprises and generally strong rankings, has also lead to more than a few placements that I am not terribly satisfied with in terms of representing our forum and community's tastes. I will still present the list as it is, though I will only give a detailed Top 100, not a 200. However, after the results are fully unveiled, I think I will experiment with a couple of other variations on the list to satisfy others, including myself, such as only users with at least 25 posts, like Bleu suggested, and comparisons of the 2013 and 2016 lists featuring users who voted in both. Of course, that will all come later. This will be my concession to everyone in order to please and include everyone. Thoughts and feedback on this idea is, of course, fully welcome!
Prepare to be surprised, thrilled, angered, depressed, amused, and just downright baffled (I really mean that last one!) by the results starting tomorrow!!!

Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
Glad to see I wasn't the only one who only submitted a top 50. I initially planned to do a top 100, but I realized I didn't feel that I adored enough artists to merit a list of that length. I probably could have named several more artists, but since I like "round" numbers, I went with 50.
top 100: 22
101-500: 21
501-1000: 4
1001-3000: 3
Unrated/Unlisted: 0
Lowest ranked artist on AM: Earl Sweatshirt (#1677) (however, this ranking is without his excellent 2015 release)
Like others have said, this exercise highlights exactly how informed my tastes are by this site. But like Nassim said, I'm not really bothered by it. After all, there's a reason these artists are so highly acclaimed; they're incredibly good.

I just wanted to be one of those ghosts

Can't argue with that. I used to be disappointed when Ocean Avenue got all the radio play instead of those songs, but now it's fun that it still comes on at bars near me and people get into it.Nassim wrote:Actually I'd say Way Away is great and Breathing is good
I was not aware of this, as I had never participated on an internet forum before I joined here a couple weeks ago. I thought it sounded funny and I was referencing your use of it.BleuPanda wrote:Also, why do people keep putting lurker in quotes? It's a rather commonly used term for people who regularly view message boards but don't directly participate.

Exciting, Jimmy Jazz! Thanks for all your work getting this together despite the distractions. Your suggestions for bonus lists sound good to me. I also liked the previous idea of pointing out people's favorites that weren't included.JimmyJazz wrote:Okay everyone, the calculating has been finished, and I am going to finally get this thing rolling tomorrow.
...And with that, I am no longer a lurker/passerby!
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
Hallelujah! Good show, JimmyJazz. This will be a great poll. I recommend doing what we did last time, where you roll out 100-21 first and then in a final topic show the also-rans. Or show the also-rans first and then the Top 100 with all the details.JimmyJazz wrote:Okay everyone, the calculating has been finished, and I am going to finally get this thing rolling tomorrow. Your choice of the word "baffling" interests me. Does this mean some obvious choices were not so obvious? Also, there are no stupid rankings. The voters spoke of change and variety is the spice of life. Left-field maybe, but never a stupid ranking.
" Ah, yes! Our meager restitution"

whuntva: By "baffling", I mean some not-so-obvious choices doing exceedingly better than their reputation may suggest
You will see what I mean...

Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
NO! I want the 100-21 to be in a beautiful rollout like the rest. Let 101-whatever be like the last time, but let the 100-21 be classy. (Sorry, Nassim, but I abhorred that format.)whuntva wrote:Hallelujah! Good show, JimmyJazz. This will be a great poll. And I'm with whuntva in that I'm interested in the "baffling" rankings.

You had to tell us that voting for Justin Bieber and One Direction was not allowed before I put them as my #1 and 2 Just kidding.JimmyJazz wrote:Okay everyone, the calculating has been finished, and I am going to finally get this thing rolling tomorrow. Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
And to think it was you who clearly stated: NO CONTROVERSIES! lol though I'll probably have the same feelings when the results are revealed. I'll darn do my best to be civil, not writing anything incendiary, and will take the result with a grain of salt and will interpret it in general/populist terms.JimmyJazz wrote:Speaking of the final results, I will forwarn you all: there are some peculiar, unusual, and, quite frankly, stupid rankings in this list. I'm also curious of the result of the 2013 vs. 2016 (even vs. 2010) list to check out this highly touted "community/forum taste." A 25 or more post list I think is also relevant for this purpose though a better/more reliable variable would be the ones with the most posts (top 30 maybe) or the date the forumer joined. Too bad we can't get results based on a voter's age or nationality (or region) because I think they're also relevant factors.

Taylor Swift at #3 will be a very funny rankJimmyJazz wrote: Prepare to be surprised, thrilled, angered, depressed, amused, and just downright baffled (I really mean that last one!) by the results starting tomorrow!!!
Re: The AMF Artist Poll 2016: List Submissions Thread
I would highly disagree with that rank even though I voted for her this time around.Romain wrote:Taylor Swift at #3 will be a very funny rankJimmyJazz wrote: Prepare to be surprised, thrilled, angered, depressed, amused, and just downright baffled (I really mean that last one!) by the results starting tomorrow!!!

You prefer her at #2 ?
