Thanks for the great presentation, JimmyJazz!

To be honest, the single biggest surprise for me so far is that Taylor Swift was only #297. I'm not a big fan, but she does seem to have universal appeal; and with all the new voters, combined with a few forum regulars I knew really liked her (not to mention JimmyJazz's cryptic forewarning regarding the surprises), I actually assumed Taylor would make the Top 100!

I'm very happy to see Nina Simone and Vampire Weekend in the top 100!!
I can now see can Lennon photo but not Serge. I'm on a different computer but I was able to open in a new window and refresh and now it shows. All photos are showing. :D

I doubt that many of the following will be on the top 500 poll list at all this year:

As mentioned by Bruno - The Drifters (AM rank of 214 / 114 in the 2013 poll) and Fats Domino (250/102),
Jerry Lee Lewis (199/191)
Howlin' Wolf (237/153)
Sinead O'Connor (288/259)
Tricky (290/248)
Bee Gees (304/180)
Richard & Linda Thompson (318/260)
B. B. King (326/228)
Jethro Tull (374/372) - my number 44
Jackie Wilson (379/303)
Grace Jones (486/283)
Annie (839/288)
Housemartins (1191/279)
The Clovers (1258/184)
Phillip Glass (1263/271)

Hopefully, JimmyJazz will provide us with the spreadsheet after he finishes rolling out the top 100 so that we can see where each of these artists came out - below 500.

I am expecting Jacques Brel (642/82) to come up in the next 10-20 artists.

Shocked Ray Charles is so low. He deserves better. And am I the only one who voted for The Drifters?

I am pleasantly surprised that Vampire Weekend made the top 100 though.

Laura Nyro is my highest pick that I thought could make the top 500, but didn't. The Pretty Things didn't show up & don't know how ELO is so low. My #9 didn't come out where it was supposed to & I'm sure I was the only with that vote. Can it be that other high picks have been left out?

As you can see, I just did...

I plan on rolling out 15 per day, though does anyone want it to go faster or slower than this? I never know how to schedule these rollouts properly. I like to build hype and anticipation, and half the fun of these polls are the speculation as the list gets unveiled IMO.

15 per day is great! 10 would have been too few.
Okay, I was definitely wrong about Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Dr. Dre. I also admit there is a major problem in this poll with old-school R&B and Funk, and I highly believe The Drifters and Fats Domino have completely left the building :( To replace YYY and the Doctor, I predict Pearl Jam and Bee Gees (to my great delight).
I really wonder how high my top 3 can go.
Out there comment: Gorillaz seem surprisingly popular in this forum.

Now Gorillaz is gone (glad they're in top 100) but no news from Blur this far! I thought they would fall before. This somewhat makes my day.

Also, Red Hot Chili Peppers are here! It seems we owe it mostly to the newcomers/lurkers. Anyway, I'm happy to see them there given the negative press they are having with some forum members.

I agree with your sentiment regarding Gorillaz. When you observe this type of surprise, I suggest you look at the top raters of an artist and the potential influence they have on other voters, e.g., Nassim and Romain in the instance of Gorillaz.

Cool to see the results so far. Thanks for the work, Jimmy!

I know some may recoil a bit at the relative placements of pop acts vs critical darlings, but that suggests to me that voters took the advice to select their favorites as opposed to tokenism toward consensus darlings. Hence you'll get stuff like Backstreet Boys over John Cale, but if that accurately reflects the relative levels of affection among pariticipants, then the poll has done its job!

I haven't gone through each of my top 100, but it seems like most have already bowed out at this point (or won't place at all). One consistent trend seems to be a push back against soul and funk, with legends like Otis Redding and Parliament/Funkadelic surprisingly out of the top 100. The latter in particular is the most puzzling for me: I'd consider P-Funk among the top 25 most influential artists of the past 60 years. Certainly moreso than most (all?) of the artists who have placed in the top 100 so far, IMO.

Looking forward to the rest!

Gorillaz are well worth their place, IMO. They are incredibly unique and have produced some very profound music. Demon Days remains one of the most topical and moving albums of the past 20+ years.

I have found that Moonbeam's tastes are often not shared by myself. But, I always respect his perspective and value his articulation of reasons why he enjoys a particular artist or song. When I read that Moonbeam's view includes that Gorillaz has produced some very profound music, I am thereby motivated to listen to Gorillaz again.

Thanks for sharing your views Moonbeam. They are very much appreciated.

Agree for Demon Days, for me, it's one of the top 10 album of the past 20 years without a doubt. And their first one is full of hits too. I think it's one of those band/artists whose love is not at all the same where you are on the planet (like Blur for example).

Although there are a lot of great acts outside the top 100 that I would've wanted and/or expected to see in our top 100, I don't see any outlandish acts within our top 100 yet (even though I am a bit surprised by the inclusion of RHCP and The Police).

I believe Red Hot Chili Peppers' high place is deserved. There's of course a lot of acts that I would put higher than them but their period that goes from Freaky Styley to Blood Sugar Sex Magic showcases one of the most successful fusion of rap, funk and rock ever waxed. I like their output far less after One Hot Minute (sadly, I believe that's when their commercial success peaked) but I usually only take into account what I like from an act when I rank them or value their artistic achievements.

I am hoping another 30 or so make the list. Good luck! I hope everybody's favorite makes it! :greetings-waveyellow:

It's difficult for me to do this. There are some artists who would be higher on my list if I only took into account the albums and songs I really liked by them (Prince, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell, for example. Shit, even two artists in my top 10 - David Bowie and The Rolling Stones - would be higher on my list if I didn't feel that some of their albums paled in comparison to their strongest releases). On the other side of that coin, I probably ranked recent artists who have only released a small number of albums too high. I've really enjoyed all 4 albums released by Arcade Fire so far, and all 3 albums by Vampire Weekend. Both of them are in my top 20. Even Fleet Foxes, who have only released two albums, are in my top 20... but I love their style of folk more than any other artist's, so I feel their top 20 placement is justified. Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend and Fleet Foxes might all move downwards in my list should they release other albums that I feel are not as strong, but for now I don't want to penalise them for being (in my opinion) consistently wonderful with their releases so far.

Hmmm... I sometimes feel like a pretender when I make statements like these. I used to be not bad at playing the piano, I have a singing voice that's not awful, and I'm not entirely crap at writing a song when I put my mind to it (which I haven't done for years). But I can't help but feel a little silly sitting here in front of my laptop and typing judgmental words about this or that artist when I'm not in a studio or on stage actually living the life of a singer, musician, writer or producer. But that doesn't stop music fans like us from having sensitive ears, right?
...will keep us together.

JimmyJazz, amazing presentation so far!

One question: Did you get my vote for Christopher Cross? (#5 in my list)

It's not really a problem to me. I don't use any statistical method to calculate who my favourite artists are; it's just a mix of a gut feeling (what they mean to me) and the frequency to which I feel I listen to these artists' releases. The fact that some acts have made weak releases is usually of little importance; if I don't like an album or song by an artist I will generally stop listening to this release altogether after a few spins, and with time it won't matter anymore. Bowie's releases in the 1970s and Prince's releases up to The Love Symbol Album are where I go (in the latter case in particular because I don't own any of his albums after that), and only these matter. To take a recent act whom I rated extremely high, we may sometimes forget it but Grimes has actually released two albums before Visions, none of them being very interesting (I like about a fourth of each album) but it won't stop what she has achieved to my eyes with her latter two. This way her ranking for me is not hurt in comparison to Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem or Kendrick Lamar, who have released about as much albums without a weak release but who are only slightly less important to me. My number one act is My Bloody Valentine, and they have released only three albums! It may seem unfair but as long as I'm comfortable with my final list (of course I'm never, so you can read "as satisfied as I can get") I don't feel a need to change anything. This was a list of our favourite acts, not the ones we considered the best ever ;) If it was a lot of things would be different.

For the second part of your answer, that's an interesting question. I've sometimes tried to reason around this problematic: "is someone legitimate to give his opinion on an artist's release or career if he can't play an instrument or has never recorded in a studio or performed on a stage?" I'm not sure I've reached a definitive opinion yet, but I know some musicians among my acquaintances who do think that critics have no legitimacy to give an opinion on their work because they don't actually know what it is. I'm more nuanced (I think there's more to a release than the knowledge of the efforts and circumstances around its recording) but I definitely understand how they can feel that.

I agree with the sentiment but you also need to take into account that not being familiar with an artist is equal to voting against it. So Backstreet Boys placing above John Cale may only reflect the fact that more people are aware of their catalog.

I also kind of object to the implicit accusation of tokenism toward anyone whose ranks correlate with critics. It's just a fact that people want to rate something higher if it's rated higher among their peers or is viewed to have prestige, but that has at least equal affect on bolstering mainstream artists if not much stronger affect.

You can't really call it honesty in one case then write it off as tokenism in another.

I have put on my hype pants. You can now begin day 3 of the presentation.

Prediction: I will go another day without losing a member of my top 25, for some reason; if I do lose any, it will include my #1.

Also, note the depth of the original poll. Each of us only put in 100 acts. If we, say, did our top 250, I'd bet John Cale gets more additional mentions than the Backstreet Boys. In the lower depths here, it's essentially a measure of which bands have the biggest super-fans. You can't really say anything about the tastes of the board as a whole in ranges where a single high vote lands something on this list. If we were to do an artist tourney instead of a poll, I'm pretty sure Cale would decimate the Backstreet Boys.

So, I'd argue it doesn't represent relative levels of affection; there's simply not enough data between either artist to make a firm statement.

Just based on a pure data standpoint, the results don't really mean anything until we get somewhere in the 200-300 range.

I would like to echo Bleu's point about the data, guys. Many of the bizarre rankings are based on very minuscule point differences, in the case of the Backstreet Boys, they just happened to have appeared on three lists with average point values each, whereas Cale only appeared on two with one Top 30 placement and a low ranking on the other. These rankings are entirely variable, and if we indeed had the option to create a Top 200 favorite artists beyond the 100 cap, this list would be looking very different. Think about the speculation of the Sight & Sound poll for all of us cinephiles and the debate over raising the submitted ballots to Top 20s instead. Which does bring some ideas to my mind actually...

The placement of GnR, however, is statistically significant. Never been a big fan of them, but they fully embody a certain style, better than most similar bands, so I'll say they deserve their placement, even being among the 30 bands I didn't vote for in this top 100.

Though it is fun to note that I don't recognize 5 of GnR's top voters, while I recognize everyone for the other acts in that section. A clear example of clashing opinions between our regular voting base and newer members.

I agree. But also find it fascinating how so much of that praise is lumped on one specific album. Appetite for Destruction is not where the conversation on GNR ends, but it dominates the discussion. The rest of their output was good, but people seem to forget they did anything else because that one album was so perfect for what it was, the band never needed to do anything else to get their high placement or Hall of Fame induction.

MBV is like that too, but I think both Loveless and Appetite are good enough to warrant this high placement because they were so emblematic of that certain style and for better or worse, the whole band.

That was kind of the point I wanted to make in my Kendrick Lamar comment, which you all would have seen had JimmyJazz decided to show them. His discography is so great so far that even if the rest of his career is terrible, he still earned a spot in the Top 100 because what he has done now is really that good.

I started seriously listening to music in 2010, and To Pimp a Butterfly is the only album from that time period to crack my top 10 (The most recent before that is Sound of Silver from 2007). I guess it frames him in a way where I've actually been able to experience him go from being a new artist to an instant legend, which I missed with other recent favorites like LCD Soundsystem or Vampire Weekend (who had already been established before 2010). Now that I think about it, this must be how a lot of older users here view the bands I think of as classic acts; being able to experience good kid, m.A.A.d. city and To Pimp a Butterfly as new releases is entirely different than how I've come into contact with these other artists. It's almost impossible for me to wrap my head around the idea that some of you might have been listening to Loveless or Appetite for Destruction when they were this new thing, actually experiencing them as a work that pushes the envelope instead of being able to see what they would later influence. Like, this idea that these works weren't always around, that it took time for them to get to where they are and change the world.

I just went down a weirdly existential route when I just meant to talk about Kendrick Lamar as the leading artist of my 'musical lifetime,' but whatever.

Yeah, of course :D I chose this particular combo just because:

1. They are grouped together in the last batch of five artists

2. They had their heyday roughly on the same time period (late 80s-early 90s).

But yeah, there's a lot of other artists that should be ahead of GnR for me. Two many to count.
