Films of the 2000s: Top 150 movies of 2000s FINAL RESULTS

Post by Petri »

It's time for the results of top 150 movies of the 2000s by Acclaimed Music Forumers.

Before I start the countdown here's some things concerning the presentation and the voters.

Fans section: You are fan if the movie is in your top 30.

Haters section: You are "hater" of the bottom 10 % of your movies (rounded up). So if you voted 80 movies you are hater of 8 movies, 81 movies hater of 9 movies etc. I know many don't (and some who really does) hate a single movie in this top 150 but haters section is often informative and funny.

I want to thank you all who voted. And especially I want to thank all who commented the movies (and very special thanks to BleuPanda who commented all the movies he has seen).

I actually haven't read the comments yet and haven't looked the results neither. So every group of five is going to be a surprise to me as well. :)

I will release first #100-#11 and after that #150-#101 and finally top 10. I think it's more exciting if you don't know in the beginning which movies missed the top 100 (there are many surprises for sure).

Here are the voters in alphabetical order.
antonius (voted 104 movies)
BleuPanda (111)
bonnielaurel (131)
bootsy (80)
Dexter (94)
Dolly Wilde (71)
Gillingham (137)
Greg (111)
JimmyJazz (127)
Maschine_Man (131)
Michel (141)
Midaso (101)
Miguel (70)
Nassim (69)
Petri (147)
whuntva (84)

Haters: Nassim #68/69, JimmyJazz #125/127, Dexter #88/94 , Greg #101/111[/br]
Comment(s): It's a fun film, but I've never understood why it gets treated like anything more. (BleuPanda)
I enjoyed the film the first million times I saw it, but I don't think I could take another viewing. (Maschine_Man)

149. Casino Royale (2006)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://movieposters.2038.net/p/Casino-Royale-2006.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Martin Campbell[/br]

Votes: 12[/br]
Fans: bootsy #23[/br]
Haters: Gillingham #125/137[/br]
Comment(s): It's a fun James Bond film. Not trying to change anyone's views on cinema as an artform, but it's an enjoyable experience. (BleuPanda),

148. A Beautiful Mind (2001)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://danhairfield.files.wordpress.com ... 02f75d.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Ron Howard[/br]
Points: 520,18[/br]

Fans: bonnielaurel #21[/br]
Haters: JimmyJazz #127/127, Maschine_Man #122/131, Dexter #85/94[/br]
Comment(s): This is one of those films that reads as too self-important to me; it tackles a heavy topic in a simple way, as if its subject is enough to carry the entire picture. (BleuPanda),

147. Gran Torino (2008)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Clint Eastwood[/br]

Haters: BleuPanda #111/111, Greg #110/111, bonnielaurel #126/131[/br]
Comment(s): Carrying noble goals, Gran Torino fails to go beyond stereotypes while contemplating racism. As much as Walt learns to accept the Hmong, the film itself fails to get over some of its own issues. (BleuPanda),

146. American Psycho (2000)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]

144. Up in the Air (2009)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://cdn.collider.com/wp-content/imag ... 01.jpg.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Jason Reitman[/br]
Points: 529,94[/br]

Rank in 2010 final: Not in the final. Year rank #18.[/br]
Votes: 14[/br]
Fans: Miguel #28 Midaso #24[/br]
Haters: Dolly Wilde #68/71, JimmyJazz #122/127, Petri #139/147[/br]
Comment(s): Jason Reitman's films have always just been kind of funny to me. Up in the Air tries to reach more emotional depths than his previous two, but I think the overall approach in Juno was much better. (BleuPanda)
I really didn't expect much from this film, but it was quite enjoyable. (Maschine_Man)

143. Burn After Reading (2008)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://www.impawards.com/2008/posters/b ... g_ver4.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Joel & Ethan Coen[/br]

Votes: 13[/br]
Fans: Miguel #20, Greg #27[/br]
Haters: BleuPanda #106/111[/br]
Comment(s): A merely good Coen Brothers film. (BleuPanda),

142. The Wrestler (2008)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads/mo ... txlCec.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Darren Aronofsky[/br]
Points: 533,80[/br]

Rank in 2010 final: 87[/br]
Votes: 13[/br]
Fans: Midaso #22[/br]
Haters: whuntva #76/84[/br]
Comment(s): The Wrestler features Aronofsky's familiar brooding, but it lacks the style that makes his other works so engrossing. Still, Mickey Rourke's performance is truly outstanding. (BleuPanda),

141. The Bourne Identity (2002)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://static.flickr.com/39/100950547_b9bab1a800_o.jpg[/imgsize][/br]

Haters: Midaso #101/101, Maschine_Man #126/131, Michel #136/141, Dexter #89/94[/br]
Comment(s):

140. Zombieland (2009)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Ruben Fleischer[/br]

Comment(s): The characters annoyed me too much for me to enjoy Zombieland. Some of their decisions boggle my mind. (BleuPanda),

139. Sin City (2005)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ercast.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Frank Miller & Robert Rodriguez[/br]
Points: 541,53[/br]
Year rank: #8 of 2005[/br]
Rank in 2010 final: 89[/br]
Votes: 14[/br]
Fans: Miguel #8[/br]
Haters: Greg #108/111[/br]
Comment(s): Though it might place relatively low on my list, Sin City is one of the finest examples of stylistic experimentation during the 2000s. It really captures the comic book feeling. (BleuPanda),

138. Babel (2006)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://67.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_md8m ... o1_400.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu[/br]

Votes: 11[/br]
Fans: Gillingham #22[/br]
Haters: whuntva #78/84, Nassim #64/69[/br]
Comment(s): Another interesting movie on interconnectivity, but on the whole I found the film disappointing. (whuntva)

137. Batman Begins (2005)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://images3.static-bluray.com/movies ... _front.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Christopher Nolan[/br]
Points: 546,19[/br]
Year rank: #7 of 2005[/br]
Rank in 2010 final: Not in the final. Year rank #21.[/br]
Votes: 14[/br]
Fans: bootsy #2[/br]
Haters: Michel #137/141, Midaso #96/101, bonnielaurel #125/131, JimmyJazz #118/127, antonius #96/104[/br]
Comment(s): It laid the foundation for one of my favorite blockbusters of the era, but a few pacing issues throw it off for me. Ra's Al Ghul was underutilized compared to his comic counterpart, and it was perhaps a poor choice to start the series off with such a complex villain. (BleuPanda),

136. Big Fish (2003)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Tim Burton[/br]
Points: 548,56[/br]
Year rank: #12 of 2003[/br]
Rank in 2010 final: Not in the final. Year rank #14.[/br]
Votes: 10[/br]
Fans: None[/br]
Haters: BleuPanda #101/111[/br]
Comment(s): A film that drifts kind of aimlessly through a lot of beautiful moments. Tim Burton succeeds as a visual artist, though few of his films carry narratives as strong as their images. (BleuPanda),

135. Sideways (2004)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://0f1b361a5a35d46c59b38689aef7623c ... a13625.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Alexander Payne[/br]

Rank in 2010 final: 38 (down 97)[/br]
Votes: 15[/br]
Fans: Greg #23[/br]
Haters: antonius #102/104[/br]
Comment(s): I think when I'm older, I'll like this movie better. (whuntva)
Well-directed with a strong cast, but it simply exists in a zone far outside my own. As a gay man who doesn't drink, watching a guy go on a wine-tasting trip with his sex-obsessed friend doesn't give me much to latch onto. (BleuPanda)
Have we hit peak bourgeoisie with this film? Paul was good, as always though. (Maschine_Man)

134. Million Dollar Baby (2004)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://66.media.tumblr.com/550d3873f206 ... 0_1280.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Clint Eastwood[/br]
Points: 552,44[/br]
Year rank: #10 of 2004[/br]
Rank in 2010 final: 94[/br]
Votes: 14[/br]

Haters: Gillingham #135/137, Maschine_Man #124/131, whuntva #77/84, bonnielaurel #122/131, Petri #136/147[/br]
Comment(s): Rather tragic, but not a film that has lingered in my mind since first watch. (BleuPanda),

133. La Pianiste [The Piano Teacher] (2001)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... r_film.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Michael Haneke[/br]

132. High Fidelity (2000)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Stephen Frears[/br]
Points: 555,19[/br]
Year rank: #13 of 2000[/br]
Rank in 2010 final: Not in the final. Year rank #10*.[/br]
Votes: 16 (of course everyone here has seen a movie about making music lists) :)[/br]
Fans: whuntva #17, bonnielaurel #18, Midaso #21[/br]
Haters: antonius #100/104, bootsy #76/80, Dolly Wilde #65/71, BleuPanda #104/111, Michel #132/141[/br]
Comment(s): Part of my dislike is due to my own boredom with questions of masculinity. High Fidelity doesn't add much to the discussion, and its characters annoy me too much to be entertaining. It feels like a film targeted exclusively at straight men. (BleuPanda),

131. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://jiayunchen.files.wordpress.com/ ... tton-4.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: David Fincher[/br]
Points: 561,29[/br]
Year rank: #12 of 2008[/br]
Rank in 2010 final: 91[/br]
Votes: 14[/br]
Fans: Miguel #2[/br]
Haters: Nassim #69/69, BleuPanda #108/111, Gillingham #134/137, Petri #141/147 , bonnielaurel #118/131[/br]
Comment(s): A rare miss among David Fincher's modern works, Benjamin Button takes itself far too seriously. (BleuPanda)

130. V for Vendetta (2005)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://moneyteachers.org/images/V.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: James McTeigue[/br]

Haters: Dexter #93/94, BleuPanda #109/111, JimmyJazz #124/127, Miguel #65/70, Midaso #92/101[/br]
Comment(s): V for Vendetta fails to capture what made the comic such an essential work; Alan Moore will never get a proper adaptation, his works requiring a high budget to be done right, but his themes too intense for a major studio. (BleuPanda),

129. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://the-back-row.com/wp-content/uplo ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]

Haters: Dolly Wilde #64/71[/br]
Comment(s): It amazes me how quickly this film fell off the map. It has a 96 on Metacritic! Though a stellar film with an excellent script, Remy doesn't go through as meaningful of a journey as other Pixar protagonists. It's the Pixar quality without as much of the Pixar charm. (BleuPanda),

126. Collateral (2004)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://orig08.deviantart.net/ed2a/f/201 ... 4pioc6.jpg[/imgsize][/br]

Comment(s): A more thoughtful sci-fi film, but if that's the case, I certainly should have an easier time remembering the dilemma. (BleuPanda),

124. In the Bedroom (2001)[/br]

Haters: Gillingham #137/137, Petri #146/147, Midaso #100/101[/br]
Comment(s): I am so pleased to see the film make the final. It was a fitting finale to a great TV series, with a great ensemble cast and a story fitting the series. Also, some retroactive recognition for Chiwitel Ejiofor comes from this movie. (whuntva)
This is a film that's hard to recommend, or really to even discuss, because so much of it relies on what came before. It answers nearly every question the series set up, but perhaps it didn't have to. Too much of it exists to satisfy the curiousity of the fans. I can watch The Wrath of Khan without watching any of Star Trek and follow along; why can't the Firefly movie do the same? If you really love Firefly, you'll likely love this film. I found it to be fun for what it is (though my space Western of choice will always be Cowbop Bebop), but the film was too concerned with solutions and missed the intrigue that made Firefly work. (BleuPanda)
I really enjoyed the film when I was younger, funnily enough I have never been able to get into the TV show. (Maschine_Man)

122. Synecdoche, New York (2008)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Charlie Kaufman[/br]

Votes: 11[/br]
Fans: Dolly Wilde #16, Petri #25[/br]
Haters: Nassim #63/69[/br]
Comment(s): Synecdoche, New York, in which Charlie Kaufman manages to navel gaze more than all his previous films combined. As brooding as it is, the film's sense of time and space is truly unique, and it carries a dark wit throughout. (BleuPanda),

121. Adaptation. (2002)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ._film.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Spike Jonze[/br]

Rank in 2010 final: 49[/br]
Votes: 13[/br]
Fans: Gillingham #26[/br]
Haters: bootsy #79/80[/br]
Comment(s): Adaptation. has one of the greatest screenplays ever, a dizzying work that questions everything we have learned to accept in the writing process. (BleuPanda),

120. Mystic River (2003)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Clint Eastwood[/br]
Points: 583,71[/br]

Rank in 2010 final: 90[/br]
Votes: 12[/br]
Fans: Midaso #18, Greg #28[/br]
Haters: None[/br]
Comment(s): Mystic River is a tale of childhood lost, focused on how those scarred children turned into adults. Now that I've commented on his other films, why did Clint Eastwood become such a downer? This is one of his few directed works that doesn't feel cheap to me; it hits hard without going after easy drama. (BleuPanda),

119. Minority Report (2002)[/br]

Comment(s): Few films create such heavy emotional whiplash. Memories of Murder takes a while to decide whether it is a serious investigative drama or a dark comedy, and the way these two moods interact can be dizzying but effective. (BleuPanda),

110-101 will be added here later.

Edit:Added 110-101 (Some of the last time's Coen Bros favorites dropped)

110. Rescue Dawn (2006)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://allaboutwarmovies.files.wordpre ... e-dawn.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Werner Herzog[/br]

Haters: BleuPanda #102/111[/br]
Comment(s): Rescue Dawn is rather basic for a war film. Herzog has done better, but still a good film. (BleuPanda),

109. A Serious Man (2009)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ousman.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Joel & Ethan Coen[/br]
Points: 594,46[/br]

Votes: 12[/br]
Fans: Petri #13, Michel #30[/br]
Haters: Nassim #66/69, Midaso #95/101[/br]
Comment(s): Though it doesn't leave as much of an impact as their big hits, A Serious Man is still one of the Coen Brother's finest scripts. (BleuPanda),

108. The Prestige (2006)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Christopher Nolan[/br]
Points: 597,67[/br]

Votes: 13[/br]
Fans: bonnielaurel #17 Nassim #7[/br]
Haters: Dexter #94/94[/br]
Comment(s): The Prestige is a film that reaches way too far; it is too caught up in its twists to say anything meaningful. Nolan tries to capture the same dizzying sense that he created with Memento, but it doesn't push the envelope nearly as much. (BleuPanda),

107. Bowling for Columbine (2002)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... umbine.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Michael Moore[/br]

Votes: 12[/br]
Fans: Michel #13, bonnielaurel #19[/br]
Haters: Greg #105/111[/br] Comment(s): Michael Moore is an exceedingly unlikeable director. A film with as many strong points as Bowling for Columbine shouldn't rub me this way. From unneccessary footage of actual suicides to Moore taking his ambushes of powerful people as a sign of their guilt instead of his obnoxiousness, too much of it finds me engaging with the director instead of his subject. (BleuPanda),

106. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://el.gallerytheimage.com/sites/def ... _us1sh.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Nick Park / Steve Box[/br]

Rank in 2010 final: Not in the final. Year rank #25.[/br]
Votes: 8[/br]
Fans: Michel #25[/br]
Haters: None[/br]
Comment(s): I probably need to revisit this; I watched the shorts recently and they're all fantastic (though they would likely rank at about this same spot). Nick Park's animations are always a load of fun. (BleuPanda),

105. The Constant Gardener (2005)[/br]

Fans: bootsy #13, JimmyJazz #23[/br]
Haters: Gillingham #130/137[/br]
Comment(s): Though I don't care much for war films, The Hurt Locker knows how to build tension into a neverending force. Only a handful of films manage this level of panic throughout. (BleuPanda),

103. Capturing the Friedmans (2003)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Andrew Jarecki[/br]

Comment(s): Not one of Pixar's best in my book. An enjoyable buddy comedy, but following an early formula Pixar has since abandoned. (whuntva)
The fact this film barely made my top 100 means this is a very good set of films. The weakest Pixar film of the 2000s outside of Cars, it's still a film that any other animation studio would like to have to their name. (BleuPanda),

So let's get started. In the first group of five we have a personal #1 of a voter and the first animation movie too.

When you become a real boy, remember me to the ladies when you grow up.

100. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... Poster.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Steven Spielberg[/br]
Country: USA[/br]
Points: 606,10[/br]
Year rank: #10 of 2001[/br]
Rank in 2010 final 95[/br]
Votes: 15[/br]
Fans: Miguel #1, JimmyJazz #24, Midaso #27[/br]
Haters: Michel #139/141, whuntva #79/84, bootsy #74/80, antonius #95/104, Dexter #87/94[/br]
Comment(s): This film gets far too much hate for all the wrong reasons, though we have thankfully entered a period where it is being reconsidered. The way Spielberg frames the desire to be human is mesmerizing. The finale is among the most controversial in cinematic history, but reading it as the dying wishes of a boy who dreamed far bigger than the physical world could provide renders it heartbreaking. The mise-en-scene is suitably fantastic for such an ambitious tale. (BleuPanda),

Get your fokkin' tentacle out of my face!

99. District 9 (2009)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://api.comingsoon.net//images//2009 ... ct_9_7.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Neill Blomkamp[/br]
Country: South Africa, USA, New Zealand, Canada[/br]
Points: 607,06[/br]
Year rank: #6 of 2009[/br]
Rank in 2010 final 53[/br]
Votes: 14[/br]
Fans: bootsy #21, Michel #21, Nassim #28[/br]
Haters: whuntva #83/84, Midaso #98/101, JimmyJazz #116/127[/br]
Comment(s): The best action films are those that never let sideplots get in the way. District 9 stays centered throughout, much like Mad Max: Fury Road and Children of Men. There's never an extended break, and the moments of humanity are bitter and fleeting. (BleuPanda),

I consider myself a nerd.

98. American Splendor (2003)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads/mo ... 3pomf1.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Shari Springer Berman / Robert Pulcini[/br]
Country: USA[/br]
Points: 608,26[/br]
Year rank: #14 of 2003[/br]
Rank in 2010 final 52[/br]
Votes: 10[/br]
Fans: BleuPanda #26 Miguel #29[/br]
Haters: None[/br]
Comment(s): I have a soft spot for films that blend genres in new fashions. American Splendor's mix of narrative, interviews, and sometimes comic panels transforms a rather mundane story into something far above itself, much like the comic series it is based on. (BleuPanda)
I wasn't sold after the first 20 minutes, but it grew on me. It didn't help that I'm not really familiar with the source. (Maschine_Man)

Happiness only real when shared.

97. Into the Wild (2007)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... e-wild.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Sean Penn[/br]

Rank in 2010 final Not in the final. Year rank #21.[/br]

Shut up you bitches! YES I'M IRANIAN AND I'M PROUD OF IT!

96. Persepolis
(2007)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... s_film.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi[/br]
Country: France, USA[/br]
Points: 609,45[/br]
Year rank: #11 of 2007[/br]
Rank in 2010 final 81[/br]
Votes: 10[/br]
Fans: bonnielaurel #23, Dolly Wilde #23[/br]
Haters: None[/br]
Comment(s): A rundown of what went wrong in modern Iran. A tragic tale of girlhood in a world that wants to deny self-defined femininity. (BleuPanda),

Here's the next five. I will continue the countdown tomorrow.

If you think Mick Jagger will still be out there trying to be a rock star at age fifty, then you are sadly, sadly mistaken.

95. Almost Famous

[imgsize 250x360]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... oster1.jpg[/imgsize][/br]

Comment(s): Almost Famous is one of the better coming of age stories from this era. It finds a perfect balance between a young man discovering himself and its setting inside the 1970s rock and roll scene. (BleuPanda),

Whatever she done, she done it out of the goodness of her heart!

94. Vera Drake

93. The Others (2001)[/br]

Director: Alejandro Amenabar[/br]

Haters: Maschine_Man #128/131[/br]
Comment(s): Located in a country house on the island Jersey this story resembles an old-fashioned Gothic tale. It takes place after World War II, but the lack of electricity in the house creates a Victorian atmosphere. Closed doors and a barred fence give a sense of claustrophobia. Fog symbolizes memory loss. Like in a Greek tragedy there's a blind clairvoyant. Nicole Kidman's character is a modern Medea, fearful and unstable. Her religious fanatism is based on a mixture of deformed Catholicism and superstition. Death is staring at them from the post-mortem photos. (bonnielaurel)

92. La Tourneuse de pages [The Page Turner] (2006)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://fr.web.img6.acsta.net/medias/nme ... 649138.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Denis Dercourt[/br]
Country: France[/br]

Votes: 6[/br]
Fans: bonnielaurel #4[/br]
Haters: Gillingham #126/137, Michel #129/141[/br]
Comment(s): Déborah François plays a girl whose response to emotional problems is immature, but you can still sympathize with her. Catherine Frot plays the pianist she admires and hates at the same time. The characters are more than what they seem at the outside. A respectable cello player behaves differently in private. Someone who looks confident on the outside suffers from stage fright. The environment of classical music, with its stress and children pressured into becoming prodigies, is accurately portrayed. (bonnielaurel)

So long boys. See you in the funny papers.
91. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/23 ... cc6a44.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Joel & Ethan Coen[/br]
Country: UK, France, USA[/br]
Points: 619,75[/br]
Year rank: #7 of 2000[/br]
Rank in 2010 final 80[/br]
Votes: 13[/br]
Fans: whuntva #3, Greg #16[/br]
Haters: Michel #133/141[/br] Comment(s): One of their more visually stunning works, O Brother, Where Are Thou doesn't have the intricate design that makes their other works such instant classics. A phenomenal soundtrack and a strong cast, however, makes it an essential watch for any Coen fan. (BleuPanda),

Comment(s): If there is no God, no heaven or hell, can someone commit a crime without suffering from guilt afterwards? Woody Allen, who left New York for a string of films set in a European city, gives his personal view on this question. His answer differs from Dostoyevsky's answer in the book Jonathan Rhys Meyers is reading in an early scene. Scarlett Johansson plays the kind of woman a man like to meet in secret but not to marry. A recurring motive is chance, symbolized by a tennis ball that can still drop on either side after hitting the top of the net. (bonnielaurel)
A charming film, but does anyone worry that it is dating quite badly? (Machine_Man)

There is a subtle bubbling throughout, but then THAT moment hits. (BleuPanda)

People don't realize this, but loneliness is underrated.

Comment(s): (500) Days of Summer takes an interesting approach to its narrative presentation, between non-linear storytelling and a rather memorable scene that uses a split screen to showcase the protagonist's expectations vs. reality, but its use of the manic pixie dream girl archetype gets tiring. My favorite moment happens over two scenes, with Tom describing Summer's same features in first a positive then negative light. (BleuPanda)

I wasn't really fussed with Cache to be honest (as seen by my low rating). Though I can see why people like it so much. I guess I felt, after reading about it, that it was just exploiting the '61 massacre in a way. What's the point of criticizing the bourgeois if the film is made in such a way that the only people to watch the film are the bourgeois themselves? Maybe I read the film wrong, but that's what I took from it.

Other thoughts:

I need to re-watch A.I.
I must track down Fermat’s Room!

Comment(s): Utterly bizarre, Inland Empire is perhaps David Lynch at his strangest since Eraserhead. It's one of those rare films that actually terrifies me, and in ways I would never expect. An ominous rabbit sitcom? The protagonist's apparent death only being part of a film scene? Inland Empire rides on our paranoia outside of its characters' experiences. (BleuPanda)

Comment(s): Traffic succeeds in many ways due to the way it manages numerous viewpoints, both in its handling of multiple characters and how it never settles on one firm answer. It instead seeks to portray the situation objectively, which unfortunately makes for a dry flick (and how objective can a fictional film be, anyway?). (BleuPanda),

Comment(s): There are many films about World War II, but not many show China during the Japanese occupation. A woman from the resistance gets involved with a collaborator. Visual details can refer to Western or Eastern culture: a poster of "Casablanca" vs. the mahjong symbols. The energetic camera movements and the subtle facial expression of the Asian actors make it mesmerizing.

I mean, it's not the most accessible film, right? I think every country needs to reflect on its history and the future it wants to write, France in particular at the moment. I think the idea is really interesting the more I think about it and I would place it higher on my list if I made it today. This is a similar problem to the one I had with The White Ribbon, I wish they were able to tone it down just a bit so that their message could be heard by more. I guess this frustration was enough in these two cases to rank them lower for it (which might not be fair I guess).

Comment(s): A five star movie despite it having zombies. The comedic timing of Edgar Wright is impeccable. (whuntva)

As established in his series Spaced (which anyone who loves his movies needs to check out), Edgar Wright understands comedic directing like few others. His stylistic beats are stellar, and he always finds a human heart to center his story around. The failures of Shaun as a person can be a source of both comedy and tragedy, and his inability to grow up works well in this extreme scenario. Though a 'romance,' the truest relationship Shaun of the Dead explores is the one between Shaun and Ed. The question of how much you can give up to grow up is essential to this film; it just happens to be exemplified by zombies. (BleuPanda),

Hidden behind all the wire fu and fantastic lore, this is a tragic tale of love. Questioning gender roles all along the way, CTHD goes to great lengths to understand its four leads and what drives them. What is more important, their desire or their duty? (BleuPanda),

Comment(s): Katie Jarvis was picked up from the street to play a girl from a dysfunctional family - the result of an unwanted teen pregnancy. Her mother (Kierston Wareing) is more interested in partying, booze and men than in raising her daughter. Perhaps her new lover (Michael Fassbender) can bring some stability. This independent social drama shows what it's like to grow up in today's England with unequal opportunities. The characters are locked up in their environment like fish in a fish tank. (bonnielaurel)

Comment(s): Brad Bird delivered the only good Fantastic Four film without actually making a Fantastic Four film. The Incredibles questions the morality of superheroes better than most established comic movies. The scene where Elastigirl has to explain to her children the actual dangers of supervillains is one of Pixar's most devastating moments. More than any other family film director, Brad Bird never underestimates how much children can handle. (BleuPanda),

3-Iron was the stand out discovery from this poll, for me.

Hot Fuzz is incredible, I'm sure my ranking insinuates this, though.

In the last group of five there were 3 movies that were last time in top 15 (and Donnie Darko (last time #11) was even lower). So the results differ a lot from last time.

Comment(s): To me, this is the first Pixar film to really solidify the company as the unstoppable force they would become up through 2010. Toy Story started it, but Finding Nemo proved how imaginative the company could be beyond their initial creation. Finding Nemo combines comedy seamlessly with important questions; how much worth do we put on people like Dory? What does it mean to be part of a family? Dory is one of the company's greatest creations, lending herself as much to their comedic stylings as to their ruminations on how we learn to accept those who are different. (BleuPanda),

Nice surprise is Fermat's Room, or the better sounding Spanish title La Habitacion de Fermat. If you're into logic puzzles and claustrophobic environments you might like it.

Comment(s): Grizzly Man has always rubbed me the wrong way. Even being a generally stunning film, the way it treats Timothy Treadwell comes across as unfair. The film shows him to be a man who knew what he was doing, yet Herzog spends so much of his time focused on death, morphing one unfortunate mistake after years of experience into an inevitability. If people didn't discuss this film as if Timothy was some random idiot who got in over his head, I feel I would appreciate it more. Grizzly Man doesn't do enough to show how impressive Treadwell's life was. (BleuPanda)

Herzog's accent made it feel like a mockumentary at certain points, not to mention it felt quite exploitative (the coroner, ugh). That being said I did enjoy pretty much everything else about it. (Machine_Man)

It is Cronenberg at his most human, making the infrequent moments of violence all the more visceral. Though I can imagine some viewing the ending as cheap, the lack of a real answer is itself the answer it needed to provide. (BleuPanda)

Comments are more than welcome. Guessing is also allowed (or do you think there should be an own thread for that).
The correlation between the results of last round is 0,6980 (only movies that were both times in the final was taken into account).

We have three very different Asian movies in this group of five.

Akira wants to take the lead, to predictably tragic results; yet the story remains at his level, giving a glimpse of the hope he appears to carry. This makes it all the more terrible to watch him fail. (BleuPanda)

Comment(s): I truly adored the cinematography throughout this film, and it's a rare film about disability that focuses more on its character's successes than his struggles. We aren't here to watch his suffering, but to witness him succeed at a seemingly impossible goal. Keeping the camera framed as if it is his eye through much of the film lets us in on his goals, allowing us to share a sense of his determination. It's rare to find a similar work that doesn't instead focus on the character's sense of being a burden. (BleuPanda),

Comment(s): Though not as meaningful as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero is a finely crafted action film. It's a shame this genre didn't maintain its popularity, as it was nice seeing some foreign films enter the mainstream in America. (BleuPanda)

Along with Spirited Away this would have been the first Asian cinematic experience. You could trace my love of colour motifs in cinema here. (Maschine_Man)

Comment(s): Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker is phenomenal. Nolan reaches the height of his blockbuster era, after mastering his style with Batman Begins and The Prestige but before becoming consumed with overly complex narratives. (BleuPanda)

I worry that if I watch this film again, I will no longer enjoy it. Some of the shine has faded. (Machine_Man)

Comment(s): Fincher is at his best when exploring characters who go too far. Zodiac takes a gripping hook and manages to shift our attention, starting with a serial killer and instead exposing the desperation of the investigators as the truth fails to be found. (BleuPanda)

I think this is one of those times where I need to point out that I have an overall positive opinion on nearly every film here, and Mary and Max is simply a film that doesn't do as much as those above it. It isn't flawed as much the others are stronger. (BleuPanda),

Comment(s): This is a film that's more like an experience; an entire feature consisting of a single take. Even if the narrative fails to grip you, it will still hook you with a question of how it was made. It doesn't settle for a manageable cast, instead featuring hundreds of background characters as we explore an extended history of Russia. (BleuPanda),

Comment(s): One of the best methods to portray a nation's suffering is to take an intimate snapshot like this one, exploring a single day in great detail. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days makes grand statements about life in Romania during the 1980s without stepping outside the experiences of its protagonists. (BleuPanda),

29. สัตว์ประหลาด [Tropical Malady] (2004)[/br]

Comment(s): I was introduced to this film through the poll, and was fascinated throughout. It has been called a "gay film". While this assessment is not untrue, it takes out a much larger piece of the movie in its themes of spirituality and human relations. The final hunt with the tiger is breathtaking as well. (whuntva)

Apichatpong Weerasethakul's best feature, Tropical Malady takes two disparate narratives and finds common threads. What begins as a gay romance turns into the tale of a hunter and a mystical beast. The innocence in the first half turns to violence in the second, but how they connect is what drives the experience. Perhaps the second half is their inner lust, or maybe a bubbling hatred as the two lovers are separated. Whatever the meaning, Tropical Malady is both a beautiful romance and a transcendent fantasy. (BleuPanda),

You're all man to me! All man...

Comment(s): Far From Heaven is Douglas Sirk played straight. Todd Haynes borrows this director's surface style but, instead of lampooning the mainstream moral issues of the 50s, instead targets something far more serious, a subject someone like Sirk wouldn't have been allowed to cover in the time where it would have been most relevant. The contrast between Cathy's relationship with a black man and her husband's affair with a gay man casts the 50s in a light few bother to imagine. (BleuPanda)

This didn't really stand out until a recent second viewing. Todd has a real knack for brining out the best in his leading ladies. (Maschine_Man)

Objectively the best of the three. Is the one with a definite beginning, middle, and end, and has the best character development. Watching with a live orchestra was awesome. (whuntva)

It's hard for me to talk about this trilogy as individual parts. This is where the story begins, showing us Jackson's dedication to bring the classic series to life. The visual design in this series is outstanding. (BleuPanda),

Yeah it was the highest #15 of its year beating two #1s of their years and many super finalists for example.
I still haven't seen it (the other ones are Fermat's Room and Best of Youth). I actually have had two chances to see it on big screen but missed the both screenings. In 2010 they showed it in Film Archive in Helsinki and in 2011 mr Weerasethakul (aka Joe) were in Midnight Film Festival in Lapland (and I was too) and they screened all his most famous movies. We wathced (with my girlfriend) only Syndromes and a Century of his movies (I had seen Uncle Boomie earlier). So unfortunately there was some even more interesting screening at the same time than Tropical Malady. But I guess Tropical Malady is still the easiest to have a chance to get to see of those three movies I haven't seen in the final.

Some comments on the ones I'm the biggest fan of (I'm not a hater of any of the films, nice job with that forumers):

Almost Famous: Forever grateful for introducing me to my (now) favorite Elton John song and the film is well-written, no doubt aided by the director's experience as a young journalist for the Rolling Stone.

LOTR trilogy. I rated the Return of the King as my best LOTR film primarily for its epic fight scenes but also for the most heart-wrenching sequence in the trilogy as we saw in a flashback how the ring consumed poor Gollum and in all probability would consume Frodo in the present had it not been for the ultimate buddy, Sam. Aside from some problems with pacing, I don't see much flaw over its 200 min. running time even the last ten minutes or so when Sam was back home was a fitting ending. I would even recommend the extended edition (+60 mins. of additional footage) for the trilogy over the regular one. The Fellowship of the Ring, though with far less action scenes (as is common in part 1s of would be trilogies) did an excellent job of introducing us to Middle-Earth. The Two Towers tied the two together seamlessly with the Helm's Deep battle being the epic highlight.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero: Very surprised by the ranking of CTHD and that Hero surpassed it. Both are very fine martial arts film in terms of the fight scenes, romance and mesmerizing cinematography but CTHD did it better. The only advantage Hero has over it is its more audience-friendly running time.

The Secret in Their Eyes: Unnecessarily remade with Julia Roberts as the lead, this crime-mystery film is well-written with many twists and turns and thoroughly suspenseful, the soccer stadium scene is especially memorable.

4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days: Definitely an uncomfortable viewing helped by the documentary-like feel and a story involving abortion (illegal) under a bleak Eastern Europe Communist-era setting. It is however brilliantly acted and is an intense and gripping drama of the human spirit.

Nobody Knows: A heartbreaking and tragic tale (based on a true story) of survival of children left on their own. If you're willing to spend some time (2h +) you will rewarded by an engrossing and haunting drama of neglect.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: If you think about it, a story of man paralyzed except for eye movements writing his memoir using said body part seems unfilmable much less a film masterpiece, but here it is. A superb character study, it is moving, hopeful and makes you appreciate life and live for the moment.

Finding Nemo: If you talk about Pixar, I'm sure most people would think about this after Toy Story. Everybody loves it and more (#3 movie of 2003 according to Metacritic and the highest grossing animated film at that time) and why not, it has a touching, warm and funny script and one of the best voice casting in history.

Brokeback Mountain: The late Heath Ledger's best performance (sorry Dark Knight) and definitely miles better than Crash (shame on you Oscars). As with most Ang Lee films, it's beautifully shot and the emotions and conflicts surrounding their socially unacceptable love affair are brilliantly captured.

The Dark Knight: Praise this film for what it is and not for its effect on today's glut of mostly way inferior superhero films. It found a near-perfect balance of a commercial movie, with all the set pieces, gadgetry and special effects, and a thinking piece: the dark themes, subject matter, and moral dilemmas. Overrated or not, I immensely enjoyed it.

Here we have two movies that were last time in top 10. And second movie to show up that all 16 voters who participated voted (Up was the first one).

Comment(s): An animated documentary, Waltz With Bashir questions the rules of the medium itself. Its animated veil creates an uneasy sense of protection, as if we are being shielded from the reality Ari Folman would also like to pretend isn't there. It also goes into great detail to explore how we develop our memories, letting us better understand how someone can commit atrocities. (BleuPanda),

It's amazing how fast Wes was about to develop a style that was both refferential but completly unique, so early on in his career. (Maschine_Man)

As the sound of the playgrounds faded, the despair set in. Very odd, what happens in a world without children's voices.

22. Children of Men (2006)[/br]

A film that didn't immediatly hit me, but has grown over the years and repeated viwings. (Maschine_Man)

Comment(s): I have no idea what my opinion on this film should be. I was too disgusted by its violent portrayals and overt message to fully like it, but the acting and score, as well as the director kept me from fully hating it. (whuntva)
Obnoxious as its premise is, Requiem for a Dream proves itself unforgettable, not through shocking imagery, but due to its phenomenal approach to cinematic design. The editing here is to die for. (BleuPanda),

Bela Tarr's films are existentialist endurance runs. His cinematography is always top notch and the way he frames his stories is compelling, but the style tends to push my limits. (BleuPanda),

You know what Lenin said about Beethoven's Appassionata, 'If I keep listening to it, I won't finish the revolution.' Can anyone who has heard this music, I mean truly heard it, really be a bad person?

Comment(s): Lars von Trier goes full-on Bertolt Brecht with Dogville. Though one could criticize the film for its unrelenting nihilism, the fact von Trier chooses a style which reflects his story's fictionality should cause you to question what he really intends. Does he seek to convince us of the fickleness of human kindness, or is he instead calling our attention to the construction of such a world view? Perhaps there's a little bit of both. (BleuPanda),

Comment(s): Simply one of the most beautiful films ever conceived; it's a grim fairy tale that is as much Spirited Away as it is Come and See. The way the fantasy becomes corrupted by the increasingly dire state of reality is mesmerizing, with the faun's change from friendly creature to manipulative tempter truly impressive. It leaves it up to the audience to decide how much of Ofelia's journey takes place; is there hope in this world, or was this merely the only mental escape this young girl could muster? (BleuPanda)

Everything I could ever want in a fim, del Toro has a wonderful talent for world building. It feels like the film equivelent of Guernica, if that makes any sense. (Maschine_Man)

Really love reading all your comments, mine were never so elaborate, would have been things like :

Up in the Air : there's a point when, no matter how good your actors or witty the script, too much product placement is a major annoyance and prevents from enjoying the movie.

The Two Towers : got both the best hour of the trilogy (the Helm Deep fight) and the worst (all that sappy love story between Arwen and Aragorn, dragging around exposition from all other corners of the realm)

The fountain : I found this movie visually terrible... original, sure, thought after, probably, but still pretty ugly looking.

Adventureland : one of my very favorite movies, despite not being a big Kirsten Stewart fan, it's beautifully, earnestly and efficiently shot. I guess you could put in the same category as my also very loved Short Term 12, as they both depict a relatively simple story in a very relatable and simple way. Bonus points for a killer soundtrack : Bastards of Young, Here She Comes Now, Modern Love, I'm in Love With a Girl, Tops, Let The Music Play, Satellite of Love, Just Like Heaven, Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely and most importantly pecfect uses of Unsastisfied and Pale Blues Eyes.

Monsters Inc : I love pretty much every Pixar movie, safe for Cars, and for me Monsters Inc was, until Toy Story 3 came out, the one with both the most heart and the most laughs.

Yeah Academy liked his movies more. Almost every film in bottom 50 is a (mainstream) American movie with lot of votes (in the bottom half of the individual lists).

Let's move to top 10. First we have a Hongkongese, Danish and Brazilian movie with lot of votes in the top half of the individual lists. :)

Comment(s): Björk was made ugly to play Selma, a poor Czech immigrant who lives in an escapist dreamworld but is confronted with cruel reality. Von Trier's unembellished realism evokes a dark, depressing mood. Although it contains references to classic musicals the music is a departure from tradition. The song "Cvalda" grows out of the noises in the factory where Selma works. (bonnielaurel)

Excessively dark, yes, but von Trier finds beauty within tragedies. The combination of stylized musical sequences and von Trier's documentary-like approach to narrative creates an unforgettable experience. (BleuPanda),

Indeed. Actually last time it was #4 but #8 is still very good.

In this trio we have the second highest animation movie and two longest movies in top 10.
I will release top 4 later today (hopefully after some comments).

Comment(s): Edward Yang's biggest films are long but powerful. This tale of an extended family carries many plot lines, all of which have their own self-contained beauty. Yet they never become tiring; there's something honest in Yang's work. Instead of going for grand statements, he finds simple yet unique ideas that really resonate, such as a child taking pictures of the back of people's heads; why is this the center of his focus? (BleuPanda)

I watched about an hour of this film, and didn't really pay attention, I had to go back and rewatch it and it blew me away with how much care was put into each carachter. (Maschine_Man)

Comment(s): Pixar's best film, the first half carries an absolutely stellar presentation. Though it slows during its second half, the relationship between WALL-E and EVE is beautifully understated. (BleuPanda),

I'm finished.
5. There Will Be Blood (2007)[/br]

Comment(s): Paul Thomas Anderson reaches the height of his career with a brutal look at greed. Daniel Plainview is a terrifying lead, and Daniel Day-Lewis gives an all-time great performance. Anderson repeatedly makes us question how far someone can go, and every time we come across the answer, he pushes it a little further. (BleuPanda),

It appears my top 4 all made the top 5, so I can't say I disagree with these final placements.

The top ranked film I haven't yet watched is The Best of Youth; I really need to find a nice weekend to get around to it.

Top 10 I haven't seen:
17. The Best of Youth
27. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
34. L'enfant
36. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring
42. Gomorrah
45. The Class
49. 25th Hour
52. Little Children
57. 3-Iron
59. The New World

Highest rated film as a hater:
69. The Secret in Their Eyes

Of course 'hater' is a strong term for me (I'd say Gran Torino is the only film here I feel more negative than positive about). I wish I could go into detail on why I'm at a disagreement with people, but The Secret In Their Eyes simply didn't click. It took too long to get where it was going, and where it was going wasn't as satisfying as it should have been.

I guess a general trend among my lower ranked films here is that they take an easy path. A lot of directors seem to take obviously controversial topics and then don't do much with them. Sure, with many of these films we get interesting stories and generally good acting, but most of the other films go so much further. Essentially, films like A Beautiful Mind, Revolutionary Road, and The Secret in Their Eyes don't use all the tools available to them, and they do so without any clear purpose - compare this to the films that placed in the top 10. WALL-E doesn't use much dialogue in its first half, but the lack of spoken dialogue is a feature that highlights visual communication. Similarly, Dancer in the Dark limits itself in regards to cinematography, but that creates this distinct visual design. Meanwhile, films like Revolutionary Road do the bare minimum to get the point across; there's little subtlety, rare uses of cinematic language. As well-budgeted as they are, these movies give me the sense that the directors view their work more as stories than movies.

As I brought up in the overall film poll, there are 4 key elements I consider regarding films:
Narrative
Style
Technique
Lasting Impact

That last category is the most important, but it also relies on the strength of the other 3. What I think the typical 'Oscar Bait' films do is put their emphasis almost entirely on the narrative. The problem is, there are so many films that put a lot of emphasis on all fronts; why settle for a film that puts in less effort? Tackling heavy topics can actually hurt a film, as it can read as insincere; is the director seriously engaged with, say, the treatment of mental health, or was their decision to tackle the subject impacted by the belief more people would take interest due to the subject matter? I guess, much like my comment on Bowling for Columbine, these films make me engage more with the director's purpose than the message of their work.

Comment(s): The Coen Brothers' darkest tale, what happens when you take their formulaic approach to human stupidity and drain the joy. This is a journey in hopelessness and unfair fates, with one of the most terrifying monsters to grace the screen. (BleuPanda),
