Alternatively, someone could go through and post each ballot as listed in the spreadsheet.

My one rule in assembling this was that each artist had to have at least two works that I was very familiar with, which meant no Jeff Buckley, no Kate Bush, and no Prince, alas. And no Avalanches, whereas had Wildflower come out a month or so earlier, they would have placed and quite highly.

Also, I found it fascinating to discover that many forumers had mathematical processes for ranking their lists. I suppose I must be old-fashioned, because this was my process and has been my process for every big list submission I've done:

It's quite inefficient, which is why my lists are never particularly long, but it's the best way my mind sees these things.

Yay I'm not alone in my Luddite/old-school style! I cut out bars of flash cards similar to the ones you have, and yeah, I just pit one-on-one until I have a list where A>B>C for every three adjacent artists A,B,C. It's pretty fun, and gets me away from the computer :D (Of course, this would be nearly impossible for albums and *shudder* songs.

I'd be down for someone else to post my list from the spreadsheet, like BleuPanda said, but I would be down to post my new list that I made after June 31st, if someone wants to see it.

My advocacy of Underworld seems to be going nowhere fast, so I won't bother. However, I highly encourage people who have not done it yet to try Parliament/Funkadelic (their influence on modern music is so important that I shouldn't have to do that), Sly & the Family Stone and Frank Zappa (I know his discography is intimidating, but Acclaimed Music provides a perfect sample as a starting point for exploring it). Also Tim Buckley, David Sylvian and Siouxsie and the Banshees as secondary recommendations for people who like idiosyncrasic artists.

Like Bleupanda, I believe someone should go ahead and copy all the personal lists from the spreadsheet here; this would be more simple and this way lurkers' lists would be posted as well.

My voting system was done by looking at my favorite songs and taking the artists who had the most amount of songs on the list. Along the way I must have overlooked certain artists because I left about 5 of them off my top 100 list.

For my list I looked at the number of top albums and songs the artist had in my lists. I also included points for live concerts, to help artists like Courtney Barnett who put on an amazing show (one I have seen 5 times) but not much material. I did give the list a look to see if I was happy with the rankings and changed a few small things.

My list skews very modern, only 17 or so acts were active before the turn of the century. I tend to only "look back" at one classic artist at a time, so it is taking me a while to get through them all.

1. Bjork
2. White Stripes, The
3. David Bowie
4. Beatles, The
5. Goldfrapp
6. Joanna Newsom
7. Arcade Fire
8. Radiohead
9. St. Vincent

My list, as it's been every year I've voted, is a combination of my all-time songs and albums lists using a simple points system, then adjusted manually to eliminate outlier results. This makes the results top-heavy from my lists (resulting in the inclusion of artists with small but great discographies like The Zombies, The Avalanches, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Slint), but on the other hand, artists with extensive discographies aren't punished for music I've heard and don't like. The Wu-Tang Clan's high placement takes into account the group members' solo albums (many of which are Wu-Tang albums in all but the name on the cover).

Phish seem to end up typecast as a jam band (which they generally are), but A Picture of Nectar is definitely not a jam album. If it was, then Phish are probably the greatest and most focussed musicians to have existed, to be able to improvise something like this, and judging by their other jam albums, that's probably not true. This album seems to draw more Zappa influence than Grateful Dead, and is as diverse as the best of his albums, as the swims through a large variety of styles and genres from song to song, all done with a stroke that is undeniably Phish.

Well, I don't see anything particularly outrageous on your list :D What are you ashamed of? Renaud? Souchon? Gotainer? They all got occasional acclaim from critics (Gotainer maybe a little less than the two others, but still). Besides, that's a list of our favourite acts in the first place so there's no reason to justify anything ;)

Something I've been thinking to ask you for sometimes: are you indifferent to Léo Ferré? Aside from posting "Avec le temps" in your French music topic, you've never really talked about him... Personnally, I like him more than Brassens, that's why I'm asking. :)

Yes, except two or three songs, he let me on the side of the road. I have no "atomes crochus" with him, I don't know why (too much of pathos maybe)

Maybe you can recommand me some songs I can like (I think you know my tastes) ?

Hey Pierre and Romain, would any of the following artists from the golden age of Chanson Française and Yéyé movement be included in your top 101-200 artists: Charles Aznavour, Juliette Greco, Mireille Mathieu, Gilbert Bécaud, Alain Barrière, Johnny Hallyday, France Gall, Sheila, Sylvie Vartan, Jacques Dutronc, Claude François?

Charles Aznavour is my 31. :happy-partydance:

But on all your list, except Dutronc maybe, they are all far from be included in my top 200. Maybe Becaud, Greco and Gall in my top 1000.

I see... Well, I'm not sure, since you like Barbara, whom I think is even more into pathos or melodrama than Ferré... Let's say you like more playful songs?

His early 50s output is more similar to how people picture him, just a piano and a voice, and therefore less accessible, although I believe there are already great songs, in particular "La Vie d'artiste" is one of the most essential songs ever written in the chanson style, at least to me. His arrangements become much more streamlined in the early 60s, and his "Paname" and "La Chanson française" albums are more similar to Aznavour's approach, with many fantastic and upbeat songs like "Paname", "Jolie môme", "Comme à Ostende", "La Chanson française", to which I would add "Thank You Satan" as a non-album track...

Personnally, the most fascinating albums he produced to me (as a reminder, I'm more an album than a song person) are the ones from the early 70s, where he's basically creating a style of his own, that you could dub free or progressive chanson. "Le Chien", "Poètes, vos papiers !", "La Mémoire et la Mer", "La Solitude", "Richard", "Et... basta !"... Everything there is dazzling, with his lyrics getting either excessively litterate or absolutely innovative, according to your viewpoint, and Ferré experimenting a lot with the arrangements. Sometimes, when I think about it, I consider "Amour Anarchie" the greatest chanson album ever written.

In terms of ranks, I can't answer.
- Charles Aznavour is frankly a classic, from the 50s to the early 70s he has published a lot of masterpieces. I have yet to listen to full albums from him though.
- Juliette Gréco is a divisive case: some people think her singing is flat and unimpressive, while others, like me, like her indolent and sometimes erotic singing. She has really great songs here and there.
- Mireille Mathieu is rubbish. She's popular abroad because of her singing which reminds some people of Piaf but her material is pretty bad, I don't like any songs from her.
- Gilbert Bécaud is interesting. Some of his songs, in particular "Et maintenant", are fantastic, but he is mostly popular for his explosive live performances. Therefore, his star has faded a bit since his death.
- I don't particularly know nor like what I've heard of Alain Barrière.
- Johnny Hallyday, to me, really becomes interesting after his yéyé period, by 1966 when he begins to fully blooms as a rock artist. His albums "La Génération perdue" or "Rivière... ouvre ton lit" are fantastic, and by 1970 he becomes something of a French John Fogerty. After the mid-70s, however, I lose interest.
- The yéyé girls are peculiar cases. In my opinion, aside from having had bigger hits than others, Sheila and Vartan are not that different from the crowd of faceless and forgotten yéyé acts from the time. I can't think of a single song I like by Sheila, while the only song I like by Sylvie Vartan is "La plus belle pour aller danser", which was written by Aznavour. France Gall is better, and some of her Gainsbourg-penned tunes sometimes put her almost on an equal level with Françoise Hardy (who remains the yéyé giant, who no other act ever reached). I personnally prefer her more straight pop period, when she began to collaborate with Michel Berger by the late 70s, which was her (HUGE) commercial comeback in France.
- Jacques Dutronc's output from the 60s is fantastic. Among the artists you've mentioned he's the only one I would probably put in my 101-200 range, with perhaps Aznavour and France Gall. His combination of the playful Jacques Lanzmann-penned lyrics and nonchalant singing is unparalleled in French rock history.
- I could talk at length about Claude François, both about the few songs I like from him ("Comme d'habitude" or "Alexandrie Alexandra") or the reasons why I think his style and mastery of marketing had the French rock, pop and chanson devolve into the reviled "variété" or the 70s. I think that the musical monster he created in the 70s far outshadows his few real achievements, and frankly he's not very far from getting into the group of French acts I frankly hate, like Michel Sardou or Serge Lama. I'd better not get started about him.

From the "golden age of chanson-yéyé" French singers, I'd recommend Henri Salvador, Boris Vian, Mouloudji, Serge Gainsbourg, Françoise Hardy, the Jacques Brel-Georges Brassens-Léo Ferré trio, Jean Ferrat, Boby Lapointe (even though I think his charm is totally lost if you don't understand the lyrics, so maybe it's not such a great recommendation), Claude Nougaro, Barbara, Nino Ferrer, Michel Polnareff, Eddy Mitchell (though he gets better by the 70s), Antoine, Ronnie Bird (a bit of an obscurity today) or in the late 60s Brigitte Fontaine if you can stand a more experimental approach to chanson, to name artists you didn't mention.

Thanks Romain and Pierre. "Golden age of chanson-yeye" is actually a playlist I'm still filling up, thus, my earlier question. Brel, Hardy, Gainsbourg & Brassens I'm familiar with and are actually included in my Top 100 artists and they have multiple songs in my playlist. I also have "La Boheme", "Ca plane pour moi", Laisse Tomber Les Filles", "Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi" and some other songs too. Barbara and Polnareff are in one of your Top 100 (I've overlooked Aznavour) so I didn't ask. Most of the rest I've heard a song or two thanks to Romain's France thread but I'll listen to some more since you've singled them out. I appreciate for your time and effort to answer my query. Merci beaucoup.

It's hard to limit favourite artists to just 100!
