Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
vs.
Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill a Man

This was tough as I love both songs but How I Could... takes me back to my senior year in high school. Good times.

Metallica - Master of Puppets
vs.
Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something

After Human Nature, this is my favorite MJ song.

Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
vs.
Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Brian Eno - Needle in the Camel's Eye
vs.
Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby - And One for the Road

Love Eno but not one of my favorites from him.

vs.
Foals - Spanish Sahara

Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
vs.
Oasis - Champagne Supernova

Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
vs.
The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day

Feel bad for going about Jesus but the NIN song was such a staple on MTV.

ABBA - S.O.S.
vs.
Le Tigre - Deceptacon

No ranking for this Round 2, only winners:

Nine Inch Nails - Hurt

Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something

Van Morrison - Sweet Thing

Eno - Needles in the Camel's Eye

Pixies - Velouria

Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next

The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh, Happy Day

ABBA - S.O.S.

Easy decisions for me this week 1 (well, except Eno vs. Sinatra)

The first 2 brackets are the only ones with a hint of hesitation (the MJ/Metallica is the only really tough one though)

Nine Inch Nails - Hurt (#2 of first round vs #7)
Metallica - Master of Puppets (#3 vs #5)
Van Morrison - Sweet Thing (#4 vs #16)
Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby - And One for the Road (#8 vs #13)
Foals - Spanish Sahara (#7 vs #15)
Oasis - Champagne Supernova (#2 vs #16)
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole (#10 vs #13)
Le Tigre - Deceptacon (#4 vs #11)

If all the songs I voted for had won on 1st round, I'd have voted on this round for 6 of those songs, Autre Ne Veut - Play by Play replacing Sweet Thing and Bat for Lashes - Laura replacing Spanish Sahara.

Hey look: it is round two.

14. Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
vs.
9. Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill a Man

Hurt is interesting, but not the standout Nine Inch Nails song to me. I like How I Could Just Kill a Man a lot more.

4. Metallica - Master of Puppets
vs.
15. Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something

Easy, I never like Michael Jackson enough to vote against any Metallica top track.

11. Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
vs.
1. Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

I always like Van Morrison, but In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is just an once in a lifetime achievement.

13. Brian Eno - Needle in the Camel's Eye
vs.
10. Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby - And One for the Road

Previously Needle in the Camel's Eye did nothing for me. It finally clicked for me this week, but I still give it to Sinatra's outstanding melancholy.

12. Pixies - Velouria
vs.
8. Foals - Spanish Sahara

Two good songs, but for the second time in a row I go for melancholy.

2. Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
vs.
3. Oasis - Champagne Supernova

:angry-banghead:

6. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
vs.
7. The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day

Extremely difficult: will I vote for a dark anthem of a light anthem. It's pretty much a tie, but darkness consumes me tonight.

16. ABBA - S.O.S.
vs.
5. Le Tigre - Deceptacon

As easy as it comes. Is it just me or are some of the more hardcore of punk-like songs slowly being defeated by soft pop this tournament? The only good thing I can say about S.O.S. is that it inspired a terrific cover by Portishead that what featured in the recent movie High-Rise. But even that can't match the sublime Le Tigre and her wonderful weirdness.

Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
vs.
Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill a Man

Usually NIN's lyrics strike me as very middle-schoolish, but with "Hurt" he made a piece of true poetry.

Metallica - Master of Puppets
vs.
Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something

Voted against both of these songs last round, but Metallica edges it out this time.

Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
vs.
Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

For all the grandeur of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", the understated bliss of "Sweet Thing" snipes it.

Brian Eno - Needle in the Camel's Eye
vs.
Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby - And One for the Road

Frank, easily.

Pixies - Velouria
vs.
Foals - Spanish Sahara

The Pixies have more personality but here, Foals has a little more to say.

Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
vs.
Oasis - Champagne Supernova

Political music rarely has such nice choruses. But "Champagne Supernova" holds too treasured a spot in my memory to lose out.

Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
vs.
The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day

Reznor's got two wins this week, and for very different reasons.

ABBA - S.O.S.
vs.
Le Tigre - Deceptacon

Just like the Babes in Toyland song last week, we need a little more love for grrl power here.

Iron Butterfly over Van Morrison

The whole of Astral Weeks is generally fantastic, and this song is no exception. The Iron Butterfly song, is however, one of the all time rock masterpieces, far more complex in its instrumental segment (especially the organ solo) alone.

So close. Two very different kinds of great

Metallica - Master of Puppets
vs.
Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something

Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
vs.
Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Brian Eno - Needles in the Camel's Eye
vs.

Pixies - Velouria

vs.
Oasis - Champagne Supernova

Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
vs.
The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day

ABBA - S.O.S.
vs.
Le Tigre - Deceptacon

Also really close. Kind of fell in love with Deceptacon, but can't bring myself to vote against my own nomination.

Iron Maiden did make some rock masterpieces, but they definitely didn't make "In a Gadda Da Vida" in 1968...

11. Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
vs.
9. Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill a Man

4. Metallica - Master of Puppets
vs.
5. Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something

One of the best matchups of the second round, a total toss-up for me.

1. Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
vs.
15. Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

"Sweet Thing" is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Maybe one day, it will be properly recognized as the consensus best track from Astral Weeks.

2. Brian Eno - Needles in the Camel's Eye
vs.
14. Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby - And One for the Road

The guitar sound on "Needles in the Camel's Eye" must be from another planet. The song is absolute ear candy, and one of Eno's best achievements.

3. Pixies - Velouria
vs.
7. Foals - Spanish Sahara

"Velouria" and "Alec Eiffel" are my two favorite non-Doolitte Pixies songs.

8. Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
vs.
16. Oasis - Champagne Supernova

Hopefully the right Britpop song wins this matchup!

13. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
vs.
10. The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day

6. ABBA - S.O.S.
vs.
12. Le Tigre - Deceptacon

"S.O.S." is among my favorite discoveries of this game so far.

Hurt
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' – UGH! I didn't nominate either of the songs in this matchup, but I probably prefer them both to some of the ones I did nominate...

Needle in the Camel's Eye

Champagne Supernova

Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill a Man
- I find Trent Reznor's vocals to be unbearably BORING.

Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something
- No contest here.

Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
- 17 minutes is just too much for what was already a subpar song.

Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)
- The beautiful melancholy of the song.

Foals - Spanish Sahara
- I'll still take slightly overlong song over "Velouria".

Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
- I would have voted for Oasis if only their song had been tighter and shorter.

The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day
- Erykah Badu really should've advanced, but I'll still take God over Trent Reznor any day of the week.

ABBA - S.O.S.
- This is just genius pop. It's kind of sad that I have to vote against Le Tigre, but that's the way things go.

The top 4 are all equally great, what makes it really painful to vote against "Head Like a Hole". Was almost a random vote. Songs from 7 to 16 would lose to most songs of the other weeks.

8. Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
vs.
13. Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill a Man

15. Metallica - Master of Puppets
vs.
1. Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something

5. Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
vs.
11. Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

10. Brian Eno - Needle in the Camel's Eye
vs.
12. Frank Sinatra - One for My Baby - And One for the Road

3. Pixies - Velouria
vs.
9. Foals - Spanish Sahara: I think I still haven't a stablished opinion on this song, since it was my #2 on the first round

14. Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
vs.
7. Oasis - Champagne Supernova

4. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
vs.
2. The Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day

6. ABBA - S.O.S.
vs.
16. Le Tigre - Deceptacon

Toni's vote was late, but I used their vote to break two ties.

Master of Puppets: 14
Wanna Be Startin' Something: 12

Sweet Thing: 17
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida: 10

Needle in the Camel's Eye: 12
One for My Baby - And One for the Road: 13

Velouria: 14
Spanish Sahara: 11

If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next: 13

My favorites are dropping hard. So much despair!

My vote came late? Didn't I vote at 7:56 CST?

That was 8:56 CST...hm, what should I do to avoid this problem in the future? Could it have something to do with Daylight Savings Time?

Sorry, I used this site to check CST: http://www.timeanddate.com/time/zones/cst.
So that means I've voted late some times last round.

Edit: now I understand, you are probably on "Daylight Saving Time" this period of the year in your timezone
