Individual Artist Poll: The Beatles

Post by BleuPanda »

For The Beatles, I will do a top x song list (number dependent on how many songs pass a certain threshold of points), along with however many albums get at least a single vote. Everyone should vote in this topic up to their top 25 songs and top 10 albums (note that you can choose to vote for less songs down to a minimum of 15, but you must vote for exactly 10 albums). These numbers might change depending on the artist.

The Deadline will be August 31st, 2016. The results will be shared at the beginning of September. Whether or not the results have been revealed, the next artist poll will be posted on September 1st; next time will be Bob Dylan, unless someone argues otherwise (we will be following the order of the most recent artist poll: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3966&start=550#p58413)

If you change your list, please post it in a new post (otherwise I might miss it).

General rules:
1. Only include songs with the artist/group featured in the primary credit (i.e. Under Pressure is alright for Bowie, but not Reflektor)
2. Studio and live albums are eligible, greatest hits are not; compilations of earlier work that went unreleased such as The Velvet Underground's V.U. are eligible

1. 50 points

Could this be extended to 20 albums and 50 songs? This is the Beatles we're talking about...

I'm not exactly sure what extending albums would do (as popular as they are, they don't have that many), and while I considered increasing the song limit for this specific group, I also don't want the song formula to get out of whack or pressure those who can't as easily come up with a big list. And, in the end, I believe we get better results when people have to cut things out instead of having extra space (I kind of wish I limited Radiohead to just 7 albums, for example, to stop Pablo Honey from getting points from people who clearly don't care for it). Everyone can obviously post a longer list, but I'm not sure how or if I would want to incorporate it. Even if I did, they would be scaled way down in terms of having an effect on the final results; I'd still likely maintain #1 being about the same strength in comparison to #25, so anything below #25 would only get a point or two.

Agree with this. Only 20 albums and 50 songs should be allowed for the likes of, say, Prince.

I need to relisten to the early albums because I confuse them, but song list should not change :

1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
2. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End
3. Dear Prudence
4. I Want to Hold Your Hand
5. Help
6. Rocky Raccoon
7. Eleanor Rigby
8. Blackbird
9. Something
10. Octopus's Garden
11. Helter Skelter
12. Strawberry Fields Forever
13. I Am the Walrus
14. I Saw Her Standing There
15. The Fool on the Hill
16. I've Just Seen a Face
17. I Want You (She's so Heavy)
18. Tomorrow Never Knows
19. A Day In the Life
20. Here Comes the Sun
21. Across the Universe
22. With a Little Help From My Friends
23. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
24. Penny Lane
25. Twist and Shout

Wouldn't mind giving negative points to Rain.

Probably not going to vote for any of those polls before we get to Led Zeppelin, either I don't have a strong enough opinion or, for Dylan, I'd need to go through too many more albums.
Strangely once we get there, there will be much more artists I will feel comfortable voting for.

I figured I should get my list in early, so I don't forget like last month! :(

Can I make a suggestion for a future Artist Poll (which might not be so individual), but perhaps "The Solo Beatles"? I think it would be a fun challenge to narrow down our top 10 favourite solo albums and 25 solo songs.

Albums:
1. Abbey Road
2. Revolver
3. The Beatles
4. Let It Be
5. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
6. Rubber Soul
7. Help!
8. Magical Mystery Tour
9. With the Beatles
10. A Hard Day's Night

Songs:
1. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3. Hey Jude
4. Let It Be
5. Here Comes the Sun
6. Across the Universe
7. Dear Prudence
8. Don't Let Me Down
9. Real Love
10. Long, Long, Long [mono]
11. Blackbird
12. Baby, You're a Rich Man
13. And I Love Her
14. In My Life
15. Hey Bulldog
16. She Said She Said
17. Lovely Rita
18. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey
19. I Feel Fine
20. Here, There and Everywhere
21. Good Morning, Good Morning
22. It's All Too Much
23. Martha My Dear
24. I Will

Yesterday and Today will count, right, as it technically featured tracks that went unreleased in the U.S. with the exception of the singles?

As a teenager, I got into the Beatles by listening to their biggest hits, and many of those hits were from the early part of their existence as a band when Beatlemania took the world by storm. Their later songs (and albums) were more sophisticated and artistic, and discovering how innovative and imaginative the Beatles became as their career progressed was one of the most wonderful things I’ve experienced as a fan of music. But if I’m being honest with myself about which Beatles songs I love the most, they are songs from earlier in their career before they reached their creative peak, which explains my top 4 songs. Clearly I can relate to a teenage girl from the early 60s who bought into Beatlemania. Lucky teenage girls from the 60s (and their boyfriends, girlfriends and parents) – they had the best band in the history of popular music to go crazy for.

Songs:
1. I Want to Hold Your Hand
2. She Loves You
3. Help!
4. Can't Buy Me Love
5. And Your Bird Can Sing
6. Tomorrow Never Knows
7. Eleanor Rigby
8. A Hard Day's Night

I know I am one of the very few on this board that are not a huge fan of the Beatles, I placed them @ #100 on my artist list earlier this year based more off their importance than being one of my personal favs. I figure about 40% of their songs I really like, 40% I despise and a bunch of their early stuff is decent... My top 4 songs are the ones I really, really like and are the only ones in my Top 500 all-time song list...

ALBUMS:

1. Revolver
2. Rubber Soul
3. White Album
4. Sgt. Pepper
5. Please Please Me
6. Abbey Road
7. A Hard Days Night

**EDIT** Usually 10 albums are not difficult for major artists but I am having a tough time coming up with 10 albums from The Beatles***

8. Help!
9. Magical Mystery Tour
10. With The Beatles

SINGLES:

1. A Day In The Life
2. Tomorrow Never Knows
3. Eleanor Rigby
4. Penny Lane
5. Golden Slumbers/Carry The Weight/The End
6. Please Please Me
7. Dear Prudence (Thanks to Siouxsie & The Banshees)
8. I Want You (She's So Heavy)
9. Helter Skelter
10. She Said She Said
11. Revolution
12. Can't Buy Me Love
13. Glass Onion
14. Run For Your Life
15. Hey Bulldog
16. Ain't She Sweet
17. Taxman
18. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
19. Norwegian Wood

How did I forget about "She Said She Said"?! I have edited my list to include the great (and greatly overlooked) highlight from Revolver.

Albums

I used to love "White Album" most, but during the last couple of years "Abbey Road" has become my clear favorite. No other albums in my top 100 of all time.

It's really close between 2-4. "Revolver" might have the best songs, but lacks the fantastic entity feel that "White Album" and "Sgt. Pepper" have.

1. Abbey Road
2. The Beatles [White Album]
3. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. Revolver
5. Rubber Soul
6. Magical Mystery Tour
7. A Hard Day's Night
8. Help!
9. Please Please Me
10. Let It Be

Songs

It wasn't hard to list 100 songs, but there are some very acclaimed songs near the bottom and relative to the attention they get I am not a fan of those.

1. A Day In The Life
2. Something
3. Eleanor Rigby
4. Come Together
5. I Want You (She's So Heavy)
6. A Hard Day's Night

9. She Loves You
10. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
11. Here Comes The Sun
12. Helter Skelter
13. Because
14. Please Please Me
15. Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight / The End
16. Strawberry Fields Forever

For the albums list I've also included the US original releases and some "posthumous" releases (like "Live at the BBC" or the "Anthology" albums). But don't worry, BleuPanda, all of these are out of the Top 10 (except of course "Magical Mystery Tour," an only-US release that became part of the official discography after being released in CD).

Albums:

1. The Beatles (1968, my #2 album of all time)
The "White Album" was the great leap forward for The Fab Four. In fact they went so far that planted the seeds of the band disintegration. Many songs were recorded without involvement of the other band members ("Mother Nature' Son," "Julia," "Why Don't We Do It in the Road," "Blackbird" or "Revolution 9"). But this individualism and dispersion miraculously not only was no dead weight but indeed it was its main virtue. They applied the perfect and precise arrangement to every song without caring too much about cohesiveness. If a song needed clarinets ("Honey Pie"), guitar overdrive ("Helter Skelter"), honky-tonk pianos ("Rocky Racoon") or a full orchestra ("Good Night") that was what the song got. All for the Song. And Song for all.

2. Revolver (1966, #11)
The Fab Four expanded with "Revolver" their music palette and doing this expanded their (our) minds. And their daring but successful forays into classical music ("Eleanor Rigby"), world music ("Love You To") or avant-garde ("Tomorrow Never Knows") were intrinsically incorporated into their own style, now a horn solo as the one in "For No One" is a Beatles-style solo.

3. Abbey Road (1969, #31)
If we compare the Beatles career with the periods on Classical music we can find Baroque (the first two albums), Classical (the next four), Romantic ("Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper's"), Avant-Garde ("MMT"and "White Album") and Decadence (the last two). But with one major problem, there is nothing more antagonistic to decadence than this album, a really brilliant farewell.

4. Rubber Soul (1965, #93)
The perfect "bridge" album between the funny but trivial Beatlemania and the innovations of "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper's."

5. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967, #119)
Time may have diminished its impact and smoothed its edges, but it still makes a fascinating listen in all its psychedelic glory.

6. A Hard Day's Night (1964)
7. Magical Mystery Tour (1967)
8. With the Beatles (1963)
9. Let It Be (1970)
10. Help! (1965)

11. Beatles For Sale (1964)
12. Please Please Me (1963)
13. The Beatles' Second Album (1964)
14. Yellow Submarine (1969)
15. Yesterday and Today (1966)
16. Meet the Beatles! (1964)
17. Live at the BBC (1994)
18. Anthology 1 (1995)
19. Beatles '65 (1964)
20. Something New (1964)
21. Anthology 3 (1996)
22. Beatles VI (1965)
23. Anthology 2 (1995)
24. A Hard Day's Night Soundtrack (1964)
25. The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977)

Songs:

1. Strawberry Fields Forever (1967, my #2 song of all time)
Nostalgic vignettes of a misty Liverpool dreamed from the deserts of Almeria. Lennon turned his childhood memories into a psychedelic trip (the song begins like a dream and ends like a nightmare reproducing the LSD effects) where "nothing is real" and "living is easy with eyes closed." Now we know that his infancy was not exactly happy, being abandoned by his parents and having to struggle hard to evolve from the strangest boy of the classroom to the working class hero he would become.

2. A Day in the Life (1967, #25)
Lennon wrote a song from fragments of newspapers (it was usual for him then), played acoustic guitar and sang with a haunting beautiful voice. McCartney wrote and sang a middle section, played piano and bass and was responsible for the drug references ("I had a smoke and I went into a dream" or "I'd love to turn you on"). Starr played the best drums you can actually hear on a Beatles song. And Martin wrote an orchestral score that sounded like the end of the world. Or like a new beginning.

3. Nowhere Man (1965, #35)
The Beatles caught in the act of freeing themselves of their bonds, getting over their musical roots and shaking the remains of the Beatlemania to create each time with more freedom. "Rubber Soul" was the turning point of a inquisitive and creative musicians who were about to break the limits. But in that exact point they were able to create songs that would serve to explain to an extraterrestrial what is Pop music. Those three-part vocal harmonies, those jangly guitars, that beat, …

4. Eleanor Rigby (1966, #181)
Paul McCartney's (and Baroque Pop's) peak. "Jane Asher had turned him on to Vivaldi and it was very good," Lennon said.

5. Helter Skelter (1968, #224)
Macca only wanted to sound louder and dirtier than The Who but ended creating the Armageddon, at least for Charles Manson.

7. Tomorrow Never Knows (1966)

I need to remember to do this; it's been an off month for me. Someone remind me if I don't post in here a day or two before the deadline.

We could spend a couple months on someone with a million albums like Dylan, if it would help give you a breather.

I ranked The Beatles at number 49 in our all-time artist poll. Going through our spreadsheet, I was surprised to find that this put me in rare company; of 64 voters, an astounding 49 of 64 voters picked The Beatles in their top 20, and only 6 left them off the list entirely. That means I was one of only 9 to rank them anywhere between 21-100, and I was the only one between 41-99! I guess sort of liking The Beatles--but not considering them a favorite artist--is sort of a contrarian opinion around here.

After listening to them a lot over the last month for this poll, I do admit they'd be a little higher on my list today, but still probably in the 35-40 range. There are few artists that have a top-to-bottom top 25 songs that I like as much as these, but others have better peak value (on my lists). Also, their albums are patchier than people would like to admit...even Revolver, which has my two favorite Beatles songs (and 5 of my top 8!) has several songs that I'm tempted to skip when listening to it (Yellow Submarine, Love You To, and Taxman). Abbey Road has some extremely interesting experimental tracks, but it also has Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Octopus' Garden. The White Album has 10-15 very good songs, and plenty of songs that people wouldn't miss if they were never included on the album. And Sgt. Pepper's is something I will never understand. Nevertheless, I'm impressed by their career and enjoyed my heaviest month of listening to them in a long time.

It's not a breather that I need; I've been having a terrible toothache and am now getting a root canal on the 31st. It's simply an issue of physical discomfort over the last few weeks.

If anyone's concerned about the amount of projects I run, please note that I do these things while either having a lull in work or listening to music; either I'm filling in time that I can't do anything else during, or I'm antsy and need to do a menial task while engaging with a medium that only involves a single sense. For me, music-listening time is also screw-around-with-spreadsheets time.

Having seen all the entries I'm slightly embarrassed that I didn't put The Beatles [White Album] in my top 10, though it's my top 11 Beatles album. Two well-known Beatles songs that I just love to hate, "Revolution 9" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" are found here, not to mention the very poor Ringo ("Don't Pass Me By") and Harrison ("Long, Long, Long", "Savoy Truttle" and "Piggies") songs. Of course Lennon and McCartney's songwriting are in top form here and while the album seems like a mess, it's a hot mess, it's just bad that I liked the other 10 albums more.

:angry-nono: Keep in mind that "Long, Long, Long" finished in the top half of the rank the tracks edition of the White Album, so you may be in the minority of Beatles fans who consider it to be very poor.

Yeah, I'm a minority on that one in this forum but not really outside it. I think there was a Telegraph reader's poll listing it as one of their worst songs.

If this is the poll you are referring to, the 5 options in the poll were selected by Tom Rowley, and "Long, Long, Long" received the least amount of votes. Not a big surprise that "Revolution 9" received the most votes.

It's actually the poll that the your linked article/poll made mention of. "Long, Long, Long", according to fans, apparently is the 8th worst Beatles song ("Revolution 9" is also #1). It's probably not my personal 8th worst Beatles song but I do agree with the voters that the song is boring.
