I didn't see Bad Brains in any predictions list, kinda comes out of nowhere but that's a nice nod.
So Pearl Jam is sure to get in but who'll join them?
Being the only hip-hop act nominated I'd bet on 2pac, the recent trend is one rap act every year.
I guess Yes only didn't get in last year because Rush phagocyted their votes so I'd bet on them too.

After that hard to tell, Janet seems like the biggest name, Chic is turning into a running joke (but if they didn't get in when Get Lucky was the biggest song around, I don't think they'll get in now) and Kraftwerk is the most obvious omission but none of that seems like a sure shot. I'd even say Steppenwolf, ELO or Journey despite being first time nominees seem to have as good a chance.

Pearl Jam is the only no brainer.

Kraftwerk SHOULD get it.

Surprised to see Steppenwolf and Journey get it.

My immediate thoughts, where are the Smiths?

The nominees does include what may be the 3 most deserving eligible artists: Pearl Jam, 2pac, and Janet Jackson.

Pearl Jam, 2pac, and Journey will probably get inducted. I'd rather doubt that Kraftwerk or Bad Brains will get in. But The Cars and Yes have a good chance at becoming inductees.

5 No-brainers (nominated on first year of eligibility)
Pearl Jam
2Pac

4 Chic (they've suffered long enough)
Kraftwerk (very influential, should have got in a long time ago)
Yes (they were second in fan voting last year, maybe third time's a charm)
Electric Light Orchestra (continuation of 70's nostalgia?)

3 Cars (might get in based on the first album alone, but probably not this year)
Janet Jackson (lack of songwriting might hurt her but she had a couple of excellent albums, and also, her before Whitney?)
Zombies (critical darlings, their time will come soon but probably not this year)

2 Chaka Khan (as with Chic, she might have to be nominated again and again before getting a real chance to be inducted)
MC5 (a nice choice but hard to see them get in when 'Kick Out the Jams' is not even in the Halls' 'Songs That Shaped Rock')
Journey (though undeserved, they might get in through public votes ala KISS & Rush)
Steppenwolf ('Born to Be Wild' and 'Magic Carpet Ride' might not be enough this year)
Joan Baez (a familiar name with unfamiliar catalog)

1 Nah!
Bad Brains (too underground for them geezers at the Rock Hall but I like that they're nominated)
Depeche Mode (The Smiths and The Cure didn't get in on their first time, Rock Hall is averse to 80's college rock)
J. Geils Band (how the hell did they get to 4 nominations?)
Joe Tex (lacking that iconic hit single or album)
Jane's Addiction (too bad they had to compete with Pearl Jam)

It's easy to be critical over this, but I have to admit that Joan Baez as a sort-of left field inclusion (let's face it, there is nothing "rock" about her) is kind of cool in my eyes. Then again, I like Joan Baez's music a lot.

Journey's induction shows you don't have to be a critical powerhouse for consideration/induction- guess there's just no denying the ongoing popularity of "Don't Stop Believin'" and the band's AOR output. However, it was a pretty lengthy wait from the time of eligibility.

Joan Baez also hasn't been a critical giant, but I guess she is respected.

Chic? We'll see if the recognition for Rodgers means the group gets left off the nominee ballot next year.

Hardcore rap is more "rock" in its nature than the pop/R&B of Janet Jackson, so not surprised Tupac got in over her. Personally, I would induct her before he, but I'm not a voter, so...

ELO is one of my favorite bands, so it's nice to see Jeff Lynne garnering some critical acclaim lately. I also enjoy a lot of Yes (mostly Close to the Edge) and Journey, so it's nice to see them getting in too.

It seems like so many 70s pop and prog bands were trashed by contemporary critics, only for critics 40 years later to admit that they were actually pretty good.
