Music of the Year 2000: Round 1 Week 1 ~Corrected~

Post by BleuPanda »

Sorry, everyone. I accidentally left off the Yo La Tengo album (the people that nominated it were among the last and I must have missed it). I have corrected the albums bracket my removing my own #1 (Veni Vidi Vicious) to make room for it.

The rules are simple: vote for your favorite in each match below. The winner will move to the next round. The deadline to vote is Sunday, October 30th at 8 PM CST. Note: I have divided the tournaments into groups of 16 based on the acclaimed music list; that way, lesser known works have a better chance to stand out, instead of facing off against the strongest. That might lead to a weaker final match, but think of it more as a collection of smaller tournaments celebrating different levels of acclaim. I am also going to do the two brackets inverse of each other; the most acclaimed albums with the least acclaimed songs, etc. That way, there's a balance of how much new material you will be expected to listen to, assuming more people are familiar with the more acclaimed works.

Brackets:
Albums: http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?t ... 0of%202000

Albums:
5. Radiohead - Kid A (#12 of the year)
vs.
2. Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R (#3 of the year)

1. At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command (#1 of the year, though pretty much a toss up with the Moon and Antarctica)
vs.
7. Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

8. PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories from the Sea
vs.
4. Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out (#10 of the year)

3. The Avalanches - Since I Left You (#8 of the year)
vs.
6. Coldplay - Parachutes (#13 of the year)

Relationship of Command still in the top 500 in AM is pretty much a miracle! Not the kind of album that stands much chance around here. I hoped for an easy match up but with that way of seeding all hope is gone.

Tough matchup, love both albums!!!

At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command

The White Stripes - Jolene
One of my all-time favorite covers!!!

Modest Mouse - Stars Are Projectors

Poe - Walk the Walk

A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras

Great game. It actually helps me revisit classics which I knew were good - it will either comfort me in my first opinion or throw some doubt.
When I looked at the first match, I immediately shriveled in despair having these two fight to the death. Upon listening to both albums again, it became very clear that QOTSA's second album is flawless. Absolutely no filler, all great songs with their own individuality. Surely, Kid A with all its acclaim, will beat Rated R...Well, no. I like Kid A, some songs are simply stunning (Everything in its Right Place), but it is inconsistent. There IS filler in there and the listener's attention gets ever so slightly turned off because of those tracks.

Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R
Radiohead - Kid A

Looks like I nominated too late but shocked to see nobody nominated Mass Romantic.

I vote Radiohead, At The Drive In and PJ Harvey. Need to re listen to Since You Left Ne before voting there.

Sorry for bringing this up just now, but "Devil's Pie" is from 1998. It's on "Voodoo" though, so I guess that's ok. However, isn't "How Does It Make You Feel" from 2001?

No, you are perfectly right. I don't know why have thinking the song is a part of the Virgin Suicide OST. :angry-banghead:
Sorry.

Since "How Does It Make You Feel" is my nomination, can I replace it by my second nomination or it's too late ?

Ahh, didn't realize there were two topics, that's why I was confused.

So fourth vote is for Parachutes.

Sorry.

Since "How Does It Make You Feel" is my nomination, can I replace it by "Playground Love" or it's too late?

"Playground Love" is already in the tourney, facing "If I Ever Feel Better."

Since it's up this week, I"m not sure what to do. I don't want to create a third topic, I'm not sure what song would replace it. The easiest is one of two things:
1. We pretend "How Does It Make You Feel" is from 2000.
2. We give "Stand Inside Your Love" a free pass to round 2, and only have 63 songs in the tournament.

I think the better option is the second, and then How Does It Make You Feel can have a chance to appear in the 2001 tournament if/when it happens. I'll do a better job doublechecking everything next time; I've been sick since Saturday and must have overlooked things.

Don't blame yourself Bleupanda, it's all my fault here. It's my job too checking my nomination :?
To be honnest, the best solution is to put The Smashing Pumpinks winner this week.

What about early single releases then? If we accept "Devil's Pie" here, will similar cases be eligible later too?

I think we shouldn't make a habit of accepting early singles, but sometimes they slip through and I don't think it's as much of a problem; it's at least relevant to the year 2000 in some way, as opposed to a song no one could have heard in the year 2000. It's easier to say this will sometimes happen, but also not to include them if you're aware they actually came out earlier.

Album votes

At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command (4.0)

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker (3.0)

The second part of Relationship of Command is far better than the first. I do have a slight issue with his voice though. Ryan Adams never clicked with me, I find his delivery and songwriting average at best.

PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories from the Sea (4.5)
vs.
Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out (3.5)

Ms Harvey laid out an almost perfect album with "Stories..." so it gets my vote. YLT's album is disappointing after the amazing trilogy of Painful / Electr-o-Pura / I Can Hear the Heart Beating as one. More subdued, a tad too long.

The Avalanches - Since I Left You (3.5)
vs.
Coldplay - Parachutes (4.5)
I am warming to the Avalanches and their flurry of ideas. Coldplay is much more conventional but I think ultimately more influential in terms of cultural resonance, at least in 2000...

Songs votes :

Yo La Tengo - You Can Have It All
The White Stripes - Jolene - big fan of Yo La Tengo, but this cover is really something

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Sleep
vs.
Modest Mouse - Stars Are Projectors - PASS for the moment

Cristina Branco - Ai Vida
vs.
Poe - Walk the Walk - PASS for the moment

D'Angelo - Devil's Pie
vs.
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras - Easy choice, as not a fan of D'Angelo and that's putting it mildly

Cat Power - I Found a Reason
vs.
Shigeru Umebayashi - Yumeji's Theme - PASS - not overwhelmed by either of these songs. really underwhelmed by Cat Power, heard much better from her.

The Delgados - Accused of Stealing
vs.
Moloko - Pure Pleasure Seeker - Moloko's song is interesting but FAR too long - it could have been a contender if it had stopped at the 3 min mark.

Air - How Does It Make You Feel
vs.
The Smashing Pumpkins - Stand Inside Your Love By forfeit, but then again, the Air song doesn't make me feel much. The chorus is OK, but the speech thing is getting on my nerves really quickly.

Deltron 3030 - 3030
vs.
Mojave 3 - In Love With a View Both good songs, but much more familiar and close to Deltron 3030.

Yo La Tengo - You Can Have It All
vs.
The White Stripes - Jolene
My 2 favorite stracks from And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out are the first 2 (Everyday is gorgeous and Our Way to Fall is adorablein a very Yo La Tengo way) but You Can Have It All is probably my 3rd favorite track from a very good album, easily topping a cover which I don't think adds much to the original.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Sleep
vs.
Modest Mouse - Stars Are Projectors
It's a bit odd, but my favorite part in Lift Yr Skinny Fists..., an album pretty close to my top 100 of all time, is just a guy telling how he used to sleep on the beach, but it definitely is, proof of how unique this album this. On the other hand The Moon & Antartica is an almost flawless album, which I think was my #19 of all time last time I made a full list. While not my very favorite track of the album (lately it has been the 1-2 punch of Lives - Life Like Weeds, followed by Gravity Rides Everything), the marvel in which The Stars are Projectors transforms after the 3 minutes mark is both a perfect example of what I love so much about that band's best output, and something pretty unique in their discography with a flourish of instruments.
So it's a tough vote, and if I had to compare the first 10 minutes of Sleep with the 9 minutes of Stars are Projectors, I might go with the former, but I don't think the next 13 minutes pack the same punch so I'll go with Modest Mouse. But in any case, whoever wins that one will get my vote till the end of that part of the bracket.

Cristina Branco - Ai Vida
vs.
Poe - Walk the Walk
Don't care about either, but at least Walk the Walk is fun.

D'Angelo - Devil's Pie
vs.
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras
A Perfect Circle is Maynard James Keenan going all FM friendly which is a bit strange, kind of similar to Audioslave, it works very well at times (by the way I didn't vote in the unacclaimed poll, but I really love I Am the Highway and Like a Stone). Still can't hold up to their original band's output, and can't help to verge too close to Creed/Nickelback territories. On the other hand, D'Angelo oozes class, so go Devil's Pie !

Cat Power - I Found a Reason
vs.
Shigeru Umebayashi - Yumeji's Theme
2 very short tracks that I actually think could be mashed up pretty perfectly

The Delgados - Accused of Stealing
vs.
Moloko - Pure Pleasure Seeker
Based on Sing it Back, the Time is Now and that song, Moloko is a band that I should probably try to listen to more. Discovery of the week.

Air - How Does It Make You Feel
vs.
The Smashing Pumpkins - Stand Inside Your Love
I mostly remember Stand Inside Your Love from being track 15 on Rotten Apples, the Smashing Pumpkins best of I always turned off after track 12.
Never been Air's biggest fan, but I grew a bit warmer to their music after a pretty good concert of them last summer.

Deltron 3030 - 3030
vs.
Mojave 3 - In Love With a View
Deltron 3030 is a wonderfully produced track (and album) but I'm not a big fan of Del the Funky Homosapian (and that assertion would lose all it's credibility if Clint Eastwood kicked in) so I'll go with Honorio's champion, who's facing a more winnable fight than in the Overlooked Songs poll.

Also because I feel guilty voting against one of the few hip-hop songs on the contest, here is a song I really wanted to see in the game, but I had to make a choice :
