Bracket 2.3.9
Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)
Kwan Jai & Kwan Jit Sriprajan - E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai
It took me a while to appreciate the unusual sound of Hudjan Mas; nevertheless, second song with its catchy enjoyable is very nice and gets my vote.

Bracket 2.3.10
Ros Sereysothea - Superstar
Caravan - Khon Kap Khwai
I've never been very keen on Superstar... even when it was sung by Karen Carpenter, one of my all time favourite female singers. Caravan with its acoustic guitars and slightly psychodelic touch is much, much better.

Bracket 2.3.11
Ivo's Group - That Shocking Shaking Day
Pan Ron - Jombang Jet
Pass - very even (and very solid) bracket.

Bracket 2.3.12
Dengue Fever - Genjer Genjer
Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na
Mou Pei Na is rather irritating. No comparison to Genjer Genjer - beautiful melody and lovely guitar solo without pointless showing off with virtuosity. I have always liked usage of flute in popular music too.

Yes, Poliuks, you are extremely welcome here.

Bracket 2.3.9
Gamelan Gong Kebjar Unknown Ensemble - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain) (Indonesia, 1969)
Kwan Jai & Kwan Jit Sriprajan - E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai (Thailand, 1970s)
My vote goes to the mesmerizing sounds and intrincate polyrhytyms of Gamelan music.

Bracket 2.3.10
Ros Sereysothea - Superstar (Cambodia, 1970s)
Caravan (คาราวาน) - Khon Kap Khwai (คนกับควาย) (Thailand, 1975)
Khmer soft-pop against Thai protest folk. My vote goes to the pioneers of Phleng pheua chivit (songs for life).

Bracket 2.3.11
Ivo's Group - That Shocking Shaking Day (Indonesia, 1974)
Pan Ron - Jombang Jet (Cambodia, 1960s)
I like Ivo's Group song (oddly it reminds me a lot to a Spanish band from the late 60s, Los Módulos), but that rare Cambodian psychedelic pop gem from Pan Ron is delicious.

Bracket 2.3.12
Dengue Fever - Genjer Genjer (Cambodia/USA, 2008)
Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na (Cambodia, 1970s)
"Mou Pei Na" is an addictive pop tune from an all-stars team of the Cambodian pop scene of the 60-70s, but the dreamy version of Dengue Fever of protest song "Genjer Genjer" is my candidate for winning the Southeast Asian part.

Hi, Stephan and everyone.

I’m new to the forum, as well. Hopefully, it’s okay for me to participate. Since I’ve always loved World music, and genuinely enjoyed all eight of these entries, I think I’m in the right spot. With that said, my votes go to:

Bracket 2.3.9
Winner: Kwan Jai & Kwan Jit Sriprajan - E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai
I appreciated the uniqueness of “Golden Rain,” but liked the soulful sound of “E-Saew Tam Phunha Huajai” even more. For some odd reason, the rhythm and delivery reminded me of “Kinky Afro” by Happy Mondays (which, of course, would come many years later).

Bracket 2.3.10
Winner: Ros Sereysothea - Superstar
I went around and around on this one. I loved the traditional sound of Caravan; but “Superstar” by the Carpenters is one of my personal favorites (as indicated by where it placed on my all-time list), and this version is hauntingly gorgeous, too. Therefore, I picked Ros Sereysothea by a slight margin.

Bracket 2.3.11
Winner: Pan Ron - Jombang Jet
Again, two wonderful songs, and an extremely close vote; but I chose the sixties-psychedelic sound of Pan Ron over the terrific progressive-guitars of Ivo’s Group.

Bracket 2.3.12
Winner: Dengue Fever - Genjer Genjer
This was my easiest vote. I do like “Mou Pei Na,” but it couldn’t compare to the melancholy beauty of “Genjer Genjer,” which I suspect will grow on me more than any other entry with repeat listening.

Bracket 2.3.9
Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)
Kwan Jai & Kwan Jit Sriprajan - E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai
"Hudjan Mas" is The Prodigy a quarter century earlier. That's pretty cool. So is the groovy "E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai" so this was a difficult choice.

Bracket 2.3.10
Ros Sereysothea - Superstar
Caravan - Khon Kap Khwai
Superstar is fantastic, more moving than Carpenters' version. I've definitely got to listen more to Ros.

Bracket 2.3.11
Ivo's Group - That Shocking Shaking Day
Pan Ron - Jombang Jet

"Jombang Jet" is the Cambodian song that impresses me the least, but it's still very good. I am in love with Cambodian pop! But "That Shocking Shaking Day" is even more impressive. I had no idea such well-made psychedelic rock existed from Indonesia.

Bracket 2.3.12
Dengue Fever - Genjer Genjer
Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na

The praise of "Genjer Genjer" in the previous comments is deserved, and I thought it had to be one of Dengue Fever's most popular songs, but as far as I can see it's just a single B-side. If their other songs are even better that would be amazing. I can't wait to listen to them! But having said that, "Mou Pei Na" was my nomination and is still my favourite song from the region. I can maaaaybe see that it could be irritating to others, but for me it's one of the most uplifting tunes I've ever heard.

To call admin's nomination "irritating"... I guess that's not a good start :?

In my search for Cambodian music I happened to find this amazing collection of music from Thailand instead. Highly recommended! I am absolutely in love with songs 3 and 5!

Yes, it’s great that we have two new world music fans on the forum!

Bracket 2.3.9
Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)
Kwan Jai & Kwan Jit Sriprajan - E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai

I like the groove of the Thai soul song but the invigorating, high-speed gong bashing and rhythms of “Hudjan Mas” gets my vote.

Bracket 2.3.10
Ros Sereysothea - Superstar
Caravan - Khon Kap Khwai

The Caravan song accomplishes a pleasing balance between traditional Thai music and Western folk (and I like the mystical feel of the music) but I prefer the enchanting Cambodian interpretation of “Superstar.” The more I listen to Ros Sereysothea's cover, the more I prefer it to the Carpenters’ original, despite the fact that I love Karen Carpenter's voice like few others.

Bracket 2.3.11
Ivo's Group - That Shocking Shaking Day
Pan Ron - Jombang Jet

Tough choice.

Bracket 2.3.12
Dengue Fever - Genjer Genjer
Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na

That live version of “Genjer Genjer” is beautiful, but “Mou Pei Na” is one of my favourite discoveries of this game and in my all-time top 200. To my ears, pop music (wherever in the world its from) doesn’t get more catchy and delightful than this song.
...will keep us together.

Hi, Henrik.

Yep, I think you found one. The power, fun, and energy of "Sni Bong" might even surpass the beautiful melancholy of "Genjer Genjer." Needless to say, I think I need to listen to much more music by Dengue Fever. Thanks for the discovery!

Goodbye to the lovely Chhom Nimol and the hirsute Holtzman brothers from Dengue Fever. I will miss you on the next round.

Another good some from them is "Tiger Phone Card". The studio version and a funny Tuk Tuk session
