I may be wrong about some of these, but as far as I can tell you may want to consider the following possibilities:

1) You have Clyde McPhatter on the list twice.
2) I'm not sure that The Crystals have been inducted.

3) I think the following have been inducted but are not on the list:
Coasters
Carl Perkins
Otis Redding
John Lee Hooker
Janis Joplin
Jefferson Airplane
Heart

4) The following bands that backed up singers appear to have been inducted, but perhaps they should not be on your list:
Blue Caps
Comets
Crickets
Famous Flames
Midnighters
Miracles

Oh, damn, you're right. I guess I assumed the Crystals had been inducted since Darlene Love was. I'll edit accordingly. (And I tied the backing groups with their lead singer since they were both inducted as performers, as opposed to the Award for Musical Excellence).

If I still have the Crystals, just ignore it.

Your personal ratings? Because as much as I love Yes, I don't know if I'd call them more deserving of induction than the Beatles.

Also, technically Carole King got in as a songwriter (alongside Gerry Goffin).

Very precise, too. I don't know who I'd call my 688th-favorite artist.

Here's my ranking, based on total play counts for each artist in my playlist of my top 6,000 songs. I don't have time to be more exact than that at the moment, but it's reasonably accurate for me. The last 16 artists don't have any songs in my top 6,000...I probably haven't given some of them a fair chance yet.

My All-Time Rank | My HOF Rank | Artist | Plays
1 | 1 | The Beatles | 4111

Hopefully, folks will provide listening recommendations for Andy for the performers with zero listens.

I would recommend the following:

Curtis Mayfield: Superfly, RIght On For the Darkness, Freddie's Dead, Move On Up, Pusherman, We Are the People Darker Than Blue, So In Love, and Between You Baby and Me;

Miles Davis: Circle, It Never Entered My Mind, Flamenco Sketches; Straight, No Chaser; "Round Midnight, So What, Bitches Brew, John McLaughlin, Miles Runs the Voodoo Down, Sanctuary, Move, Jeru, Deception, Godchild, Boplicity, Rocker, Israel, S'il Vous Plait (live), Move (live), Freddie Freeloader, Milestones, Ah-Leu-Cha, All of You, Bye Bye Blackbird, Tadd's Delight, Dear Old Stockholm, Little Melonae, Budo, Oleo, I Didn't, Will You Still Be Mine?, and Spanish Key

Thanks Henry! I actually have listened to at least one song by each of those artists, but just didn't put it on my top-6,000 playlist. I have not listened to some of your suggestions though, so I will give them a chance. I first listened to all of the songs ranked on Acclaimed Music back when then there were 3,000. At first I didn't like a lot of songs I now love, so it's always worth revisiting these recommendations that I'm still not very familiar with. Obviously there are reasons why Miles Davis and Curtis Mayfield are in the Hall of Fame and ranked so highly on AM. I haven't connected with them yet, but that doesn't mean I won't. And for a handful of artists on here, I've only listened to one song, so that's not really a fair shot.

For Dr. John: Iko Iko
For Parliament-Funkadelic: Mothership Connection, Maggot Brain, One Nation Under a Groove, Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome

Isaac Hayes: Honestly, the theme from Shaft is justification enough for me (I've been meaning to listen to Hot Buttered Soul).
And, of course "Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. I Love You)"

Artists in my top 100 that are eligible but not in:
6. Radiohead
41. Tool
55. Blur
56. Pixies
66. Soundgarden

So if next year's class were up to me, that would be it.

Futurerocklegends tried something like that, sorting the Hall of Fame inductees by tiers

Image

It's not too bad. It's a US list so some acts that are barely recognised around here seem a bit high to me (Tom Petty being the example I always take... never heard him on the radio in France while most of the big acts from his era would have at least one well known single) and a bunch of acts like Parliament seem to low, but I wouldn't make a massively different ranking.

Radiohead hadn't been eligible so far, will be for next elections. Actually have no idea how likely they are to enter soon.

I would add Ike's Rap (one of the only song I know that is great and has been sample in 3 great songs) and Walk On By. And if you include performances as South Park's The Chef, my favorite is Love Gravy (though Tonight is Right for Love and Simultaneous anre Simultaneous are pretty funky too).

I'd say Radiohead get in on the first year of eligibility certainly.

I listened to all of the Curtis Mayfield recommendations, and I still have a hard time getting into it. In general, I place an emphasis on melody, and with him and a lot of other funk/soul artists, I feel that melody takes a backseat to the "groove" and in some cases, the social commentary. Sometimes the groove is enough to carry the song, but that's very rare for me, and social commentary is never enough on its own to carry a song (hence why the Sex Pistols are not in my top 1,000 artists). My favorite was Move on Up, but I still prefer Kanye's sample of it in Touch the Sky. I have similar issues with Isaac Hayes and Parliament/Funkadelic. Nassim, I love South Park, so my favorite Isaac Hayes moments were from that show.

I also have a hard time connecting with jazz because it tends to lack structure and melody - at least in the conventional sense - and many times even the rhythms become hard to follow. The jazz songs I like the most are ones like Take Five, which has a fantastic melodic motif to anchor the song.

I do like Dr. John's Iko Iko, so I will check out some more of his work.

I just realized that Bjork will be eligible next year. God, she's gonna get nominated so many times without even getting into the Hall of Fame.

Technically, she's been eligible since 2002. Remember, she made an album at age 11.

I think that may be true. But if they ever change up the committee a little, it could happen. It depends on how willing they are to accommodate for electronica.

I always forget about that little 1977 album. I think most people, and Bjork herself, considers the 1993 album to be her official debut.

And, to be even more technical, she has been eligible as a member of the Sugarcubes.

My father was aware of Tom Petty though, and did put his music on infrequently when I was a kid. I'm not sure I'd call him one of the greatest artists of all time, but "American Girl", "Louisiana Rain", "Refugee" and a good chunk of the album Full Moon Fever are killers, unless you're intolerant to folk-rock and soft rock.

andyd1010, I really hope you'll manage to enjoy jazz and "groove-driven" music such as funk in the future. Miles Davis, Zappa and Parliament/Funkadelic are among the greatest artists ever (in fact, they'd make a decent top 3 for a top modern music artists of all time if you discard lyrics as a main factor). The easiest point of entries in their discographies to me are as follow:

Miles Davis: Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way, Jack Johnson. Maybe Birth of the Cool as well, although it's quite different from his subsequent output.
Parliament/Funkadelic: Maggot Brain, Standing on the Verge of Getting It On, Mothership Connection.
Frank Zappa: Hot Rats, Zoot Allures, Apostrophe ('), and Freak Out! for the Mothers of Invention period.

Thanks Pierre! I will check out the ones I haven't heard, and I hope I'll gain more of an appreciation of those types of music as well.

Great that you listened to the songs. I've found that for certain genres it takes a few listens to start enjoying songs and sometimes years between listens. :greetings-waveyellow:

Unfortunately for some artists, there is no amount of listening that seems to make them more enjoyable :angry-banghead:

Update: So What, Maggot Brain, and Can You Get to That are very good. Never knew Rill Rill came from Funkadelic. I think a couple of Mothers of Invention songs are decent, but I don't love them, and I still haven't gotten into any of Curtis Mayfield's solo work, just a few Impressions songs.
