Acclaimed Music & Best Ever Albums

As we search for things to tide ourselves over while we wait for next year's update, I thought I'd contribute a comparison of Acclaimed Music to Best Ever Albums (besteveralbums.com). If you're not familiar with BEA, it's a site that compiles a (very) few critics' lists but is primarily user-generated a la Rate Your Music - with results that, to my mind, are more interesting (and closer in a lot of ways to AM's than RYM's are) than you might expect.

I compiled a BEA top 3000 yesterday (November 21, 2012 - the rankings actually update automatically with each new submission, it would seem, although the site's now been around long enough that there's a great deal of consistency in the upper reaches), and have compared those rankings with the current AM top 3000. (For 2010 and 2011 albums, I've assigned an AM rank along the lines of my earlier prediction post here.) The top 1000 albums are listed below:

BEA has some of the same idiosyncrasies that have often been noted in discussions, here and elsewhere, of RYM - inordinately high rankings for a lot of hard rock/metal, inordinately low rankings for a lot of black music. BEA also doesn't treat jazz as well as RYM does, outside of the expected well-known classics. But it's an interesting list nonetheless.

Ugh. I've actually posted there a few times, but I think that site is pretty awful overall. The point system used to enable different list sizes, the fact that Coldplay and Oasis are considered so much better than Prince, the fact that people rate other people's charts, etc. I think their list is even more male-dominated than the AM one, and that is inexcusable in my view.

I do appreciate the effort you took compiling it, though. I just don't like the end result! It saddens me to see music communities so dead set on identifying only music by white males with guitars as worthy of adulation.

Thanks for the comparision, Harold. Overall, I agree with Moonbeam that AM is much more reliable (which isn't surprising, given the amazing scope of AM, and the enormous amount of work that Henrik and others have put into it). However, I do like a lot of neo-prog acts, particularly Porcupine Tree, and was happy to see "Fear of a Blank Planet" do so well on the Best Albums list. There's no doubt, though, that the list does seem to be heavily slanted toward (and against) certain genres; while AM, due to the system used, does the best job I've ever seen of balancing out such issues.

It is interesting how, even though people accuse critics of being out of touch, critic lists always end up really close to lists generated by random music fans.

Only, the user generated lists have more newer albums high up and narrower genre focus.
