I've been trying to list off the top 30, but I seem to be missing 3. Can't wait to find out what the 3 I forgot were!

There was a time when all 3 of the above were in the Top 10, and I wish, honestly, that they had stayed there. ("Billie Jean" was actually #1 for a bit.)

I'm especially surprised that "God Only Knows" ended up at 15, but surprises are good, right?

Personally not too fond with the top 20 so far (up to 13). I guess in a songs poll like this, I will always prefer the stretches of songs just outside the top.

Sonofsamiam, it is with great excitement that I scroll down your posts. Gillingham, my feelings were the opposite of yours. I really felt that the 20-13 section (make that top 30) weren't the usual suspects but included some surprises and more importantly they are absolutely amazing songs.

We're better than the critics, and it actually bothers me a bit. With internet and all, do we still need a summary of critics' lists like we did in the '90s?

Interesting stats on "Good Vibrations" and "Stairway to Heaven"...both had under 20 votes, but a large percentage of their voters placed the songs Top 20. So it's a real LOVE/Indifferent relationship for those 2.

Wow. This sure is a shock. Our number 1 song had no number 1 or number 2 votes? Well whatever, "Gimme Shelter" is an amazing song, and it's nice to see it ranked so high. Now if only the critics could get around to actually getting the song in the top 100 of the AM list...

Thanks sonofsamiam for hosting the poll!

This means that the #1 song got no #1 individual votes, and only 2 Top 10. It did get 27 votes out of the 37 submissions, so general consensus meant something here. And of those, 17 of those were Top 100, and only 1 was lower than 266.

And to think I almost went with a more conservative calculation...

Anyway, thanks to everyone who voted, who commented here, and who enjoyed and/or hated the results. It was a lot of fun, and as always a real pleasure to associate with such a great forum of nice, knowlegable people.

Wow, how cool is it that we voted a song outside of AM top 100 as our number 1!? It's gotta be one of the biggest surprises of all time. And I mean all time, not just in our forum. :D

Thank you so much sonofsamiam, it's been an amazing journey! I'm sure the discussions will continue for a long time in this thread.

You're very welcome, everyone.

And yes, I was as shocked as everyone else. And take a look at the gap in points...it wasn't even all that close. If anything, it's nice to have a new #1.

Now, I have to go for the weekend -- thanks for the patience, and please comment away!

I'll be back next week with stats and other goodies.

I would never, never, NEVER predict that. You are awesome, guys. I would like to say something more, but I'm a bit too shocked right now. What a brilliant gift in their big year!

Though I didn't put "Gimme Shelter" at #1 (I had it at 181), I have no problem with its #1 in this poll.

Thanks a lot Sonofsamiam. I enjoyed the ride.

Great number one. Very surprising, but it is simple one of the most exhilarating tracks out there. I love it to bits.

I don't care who wins! What I do care about is the effort to come up with good music, hoping you had fun along the way! Cheers, everyone!

YES!!!! Long live the synths! I have early memories of hearing this song and seeing the video. Those booming synth lines set my hair on end as they still do today and that crazy woman with the bright orange (ORANGE!) hair made me realize that music was something that I could love.

Agreed. "Hotel California" is especially puzzling. I simply cannot understand why anyone would find it special in any way. I LOVE that 90-81 section, though, bar "My Generation".

That run from 35-31 makes me very sad. :(

I'm very happy to see "All My Friends" remain in the top 50, though. It's worthy of the upper reaches!

I'm especially surprised that "God Only Knows" ended up at 15, but surprises are good, right?
Huzzah for Prince over MJ! Love both, even if as per usual, I prefer several other tracks by each. Very happy to see "Strange Fruit" do well. This is usually the boring section of the list.

Although I was one of the few who didn’t include “Gimme Shelter,” it is undeniably a great song, and is a great choice for #1. (It was on my original list of over 6,000 songs that I was strongly considering.) It doesn’t connect with me personally as much as others, but I do love it (especially Clayton’s emotional, cracking voice). I also loved sonofsamiam’s choice of photos. The horrified look on the audience’s faces, and the presence of Hell’s Angels, sent chills through me, as we all know what happened at the Altamont free concert. What a great way to finish the countdown.

A special thanks to sonofsamiam for an outstanding presentation, and to all of the AM forum members who voted. I’m in awe of everyone’s appreciation of great music, and look forward to participating in the forum for many years to come.

Wow. That run from 10-7 was wonderful! Seeing "Superstition" in the top 10 made me giddy. And I much prefer "Gimme Shelter" to the songs that finished 2nd and 3rd, so I am chuffed!

I must say that I definitely prefer this list to the 2010 list! I've done my own calculation based on my top 2300, and 137 of the songs I listed rose in the chart while 116 fell. I weighted the changes based on position, and it actually appears that the 2010 list was more favorable to my favorites (probably due to Prince's poor performance), but I'm still much happier with the overall list this time - it's much more heterogeneous in style and era, and there was great unpredictability. "Sweet Dreams" in the top 100 is a dream come true for me. Thank you sonofsamiam for hosting this wonderful poll.

We do need the summary, Henrik. Don't think you'll get away that easily. ;)

I feel like I should chime in a bit about my comments about certain songs and genres, including classic rock. Let me first say that this forum has been an absolute Godsend to me, as posters have been pretty much uniformly welcoming and kind. I can only hope that I have returned the favor.

Before I found this forum (and prince.org), though, I felt lost in the wilderness with my taste. I encountered countless blowhards who insisted that there was something wrong with me for not worshiping at the altar of The Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Eagles, etc., and insisted that there were objective reasons why the music they liked (mostly classic rock) was inherently superior to that "80s bullshit with synths - it's not even REAL music"! This obnoxiousness was pretty much all I ever encountered growing up - I didn't know any other Prince fans besides my brother in real life and was routinely mocked for liking him. Even my friends thought he was weird. Björk was also "too weird". Eurythmics were "too 80s". Madonna, Janet Jackson and The Cure had a bit more support, but by and large, I felt like an outcast musically.

This all sounds very pathetic, I know, but (I feel like I can say this here), music matters to me. A lot. So finding a place like this forum where I could feel free to express my unabashed love for the 80s and my favorite artists without animosity means more than it probably should. On the other hand, while I definitely developed my own opinion on music that was socially acceptable to like, the negative experiences I had with those blowhard fans definitely soured me further on the stuff I didn't like. While I would hope that I have matured to the point where I view the music separately to its consumers (I'm sure I have a long way to go on the maturity front), those experiences probably still have an impact on my own commentary toward such music. Nevertheless, my negative reaction to certain songs, artists and genres is never meant as a personal attack on those of you who enjoy them. I know we're all adults here, but I also know that like me, we all value music very much so that it does feel like we can have deeply personal attachment to it.

Long story short, I love all y'all regardless of the music you like. Henry, I know I've labelled you the "anti-Moonbeam" before, but that is merely a statement about our musical taste. You have never treated me poorly, and I hope that I have never done the same. Nicolas has said that he and I form opposite sides of the same coin, and I can agree with that too. Regardless, my experience on this forum has proven that what I value the MOST is not the particular opinion that any of you espouse, but the passion behind its expression that keeps me coming here. Long live AM!

This has been great, Sonofsam. Thanks again for running it!
I'm seriously disappointed that my top two songs took plummets. :(
My other major grievance is that neither masterpiece from "Darkness on the Edge of Town" (Prove it All Night and the title track) made the top 1000.

Shocking to see Dylan dethroned.

Amen, Moonbeam. And many times musical tastes may differ dramatically (you obviously don’t care for a few of my favorites, particularly the Beatles and Pink Floyd) while intersecting in other areas (the Cure is my second all-time favorite artist, and I’ve always loved Prince and Madonna). I noticed that you listed “Something in the Water (Does not Compute)” as your all-time favorite song. This is my favorite track off “1999,” and I also listed it in the honorable mention section of my list. It’s always amazed me how musical tastes can be so different and similar at the same time.
