EOY Songs Spreadsheet - Updates

Post by BleuPanda »

Hello, all. I guess I'm doing the EOY song list. This is my first time doing this, so if you notice any errors, please tell me.

Current Lists:
USA and Canada: American Songwriter, NPR, Paste, PopMatters
UK/Ireland: NME
Rest of the World: Mowno

Based on these few lists, the top 10 currently looks like this:
1. Japandroids-The House That Heaven Built
2. Ocean, Frank-Pyramids
3. Grimes-Oblivion
4. Father John Misty-Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings
5. Apple, Fiona-Every Single Night
6. M.I.A.-Bad Girls
7. Grimes-Genesis
8. Plan B-Ill Manors
9. Alabama Shakes-Hold On
10. Shovels and Rope-Birmingham

I think this was all the song lists posted on the forum so far.

Love "House That Heaven Built", "Every Single Night" "Pyramids" "Oblivion" Not a fan of some of the others, particular the M.I.A. and Jack White tracks which are decent but far from Artists best.

Songs I heard this year that were every bit as good as what's getting the Pub but won't score high on these lists.

Talulah - Allo "Darlin"
Default - Django Django - this one will probably end up in upper consensus ranks when all said and done
Getaway - Dr. John
#1 Without The Rush - Liars
Take A Walk - Passion Pit - Another That should end Fairly high
To A Poet - First Aid Kit - (Like it even better than Emylou)
I've Seen Footage - Death Grips
You Are Forgiven - Anais Mitchell (Young Man in America most overlooked album of the year in these year end polls - superior to Lion's Roar or Tramp)
and my co-songs of the year - Avatar and The Apostate by Swans - guarantee you won't see these high on any aggregate critical list

I'm down with "The House That Heaven Built" as year-end number 1. It's this year's "Queen of Hearts" (my #2 of 2011)--an ambitious, wide-open, perfectly executed rock anthem. When those tracks come along, they should be rewarded.

I'm surprised all the Tame Impala acclaim has gone to "Elephant" so far. I thought "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards" was the consensus favorite from Lonerism, or at least the tracks would have similar acclaim.

On the mainstream pop songs front, I'm totally down with a high ranking for "Call Me Maybe", but that T Swift song has no business being in the top 20. But I have a feeling this entire list will change quite a bit, as very few publications have revealed their songs lists yet.

3. Ocean, Frank-Pyramids
4. Beach House-Myth
5. Grimes-Oblivion
6. Twin Shadow-Five Seconds
7. Miguel-Adorn
8. Ocean, Frank-Thinkin' Bout You
9. Apple, Fiona-Every Single Night
10. Solange-Losing You
11. Bat for Lashes-Laura
12. Jepsen, Carly Rae -Call Me Maybe
13. M.I.A.-Bad Girls
14. Paul, Jai-Jasmine
15. Grizzly Bear-Yet Again
16. Ware, Jessie-Wildest Moments
17. Dirty Projectors-Gun Has No Trigger

Also, one question: what do I do with song remixes? Are they kept seperately?

I usually combine them with the original versions. Let me know if there are cases where this feels really wrong.

"Climax" is a good song and all, but song of the year? Really? I seriously hope that changes. Most of the reason it's ranking so high is due to the high amount of points it's getting from UK critics, even though it's only featured on 3 of their lists. Once more UK critics lists come in, the song's rank should (hopefully) go down.

I didn't realize that each region had a even or specific weight. I thought it would self regulate due to the number of sources from a given part of the world, and if the UK only had 3 it wouldn't be considered as prominent thus. I'm also surprised that more mainstream pop stuff isn't manifesting. I thought the songs list is where that stuff typically made its presence known. (ie. fun., Kelly Clarkson, Gotye, Maroon 5, etc)

Firt i'd like to ask to henrik when do you think will be the next albums or songs update on the site will happen? Then i wonder why doesthis site never considerate the dubstep wave that has been shaking england for the last three years? Idont like this music at all but it is part of the musical landscape now and we cant deny it unfortunately...
I think Channel orange wont loose his top spot and i'm really happy about it! This guy is wonderful and i think is first album is ready to go on the top 200 albums of all time, or even 100! And i hope that the altJ album will definitely make the top 5! They are definitely the best new band this year in my opinion

Next June, probably.

There is some dubstep that is loved on this site- Burial and James Blake being the main ones. Though those are hardly what most people think of as dubstep these days.

I think "Somebody That I Used To Know" was badly damaged last year. I had the impression that the publications were divided, some considering the song being 2011 and others 2012.

I may be wrong, but it's something I noticed.

I'm surprised no Chromatics songs are in the top 30, or "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards."

Some crazy regional differences in this one: electronic dominates the UK, with "New For U" and "Inspector Norse" as the top 2. Meanwhile US #1 track "The House that Heaven Built" has not made a single UK list.

Check out the UK top 30 for a completely different look on the tracks of the year.

1 | Andres | New for U
2 | Terje, Todd | Inspector Norse
3 | Ware, Jessie | Running/Running (Disclosure Remix)
4 | Paul, Jai | Jasmine
5 | Bashmore, Julio | Au Seve
6 | Usher | Climax
7 | TNGHT | Higher Ground
8 | Grimes | Oblivion
9 | Joy Orbison | Ellipsis
10 | Jepsen, Carly Rae | Call Me Maybe
11 | Plan B | Ill Manors
12 | Blawan | Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?
13 | Solange | Losing You
14 | blur | Under the Westway
15 | M.I.A. | Bad Girls
16 | Savages | Husbands
17 | Dusky | Flo Jam
18 | Major Lazer | Get Free
19 | Zebra Katz | Ima Read
20 | Lamar, Kendrick feat. Gunplay | Cartoons and Cereal
21 | Ware, Jessie | 1.1
22 | Tame Impala | Elephant
23 | Huxley | Let It Go
24 | Disclosure | Latch
25 | Bat for Lashes | Laura
26 | Grimes | Genesis
27 | Pachanga Boys | Time
28 | Haim | Forever
29 | West, Kanye | Clique

If anyone was interested, I've created my own Spotify playlist of the Top 200 songs on the list, in order (minus 20 that weren't available). The other playlist seemed a little out of date to me. I'll update it when the song list gets updated :)

If anything, it's seems as if it is compiled by one person and is therefore not eligible.

The last three aren't, as they don't fulfil the new criterion of >=10 album reviews per month.

405 looks like it could eligible. No new sources have been added to the spreadsheet, but I guess this one could be added. Is it the only new eligible source?

It would be great if someone could take the last version of the spreadsheet and update the hyperlinks in row 1. You can link to the posts in the "critics' lists" section (those posts then usually have links to the original source).

Also, I would like to know which lists that are limited to singles and which lists that include album tracks as well. Either mark the singles-only lists with some background colour or list them in this thread.

Thanks in advance!

OK, I'm done. These are the singles - only lists: Pazz & Jop; The Agit Reader; Magic; Porcys; Screenagers; Slant; DJMag; Le Vif; Goute Mes Disques; Textura. Hope I didn't miss anything.
There is a problem with Textura list - it is not limited to singles; you can find EPs there too - as pointed in the title (10 EPs/Singles/12-inches discs). Example - http://www.allmusic.com/album/escapement-mw0002450478 (don't ask me, how they included 2013 release in this list). Moreover, most of the picks are so obscure that I can't find them on AllMusic.
Playground, unlike other Spanish magazines, doesn't have its national list included in the spreadsheet. Is it intended?

Some work on the spreadsheet made me realize how tiring it must be for you to deal with it large-scale, Henrik. Considering that you get no money for this... well, I can only thank you one more time for this great site!

Sorry for this late response Poliuks, but you did a great job! Thanks!

As for Playground, they have not published national songs lists before. At least they have never been posted in the forum before, so the national list wasn't in the template I made for BleuPanda. Otisredding or someone else from Spain, could you let me know if Playground had national songs lists in 2009-2011? If not, do you think they covered Spanish music in their songs lists (2009, 2010, 2011)?

It looks like all old EOY lists have disappeared from their website, at least I couldn't find them.

I see now that the national #1 album and #1 song are also included in the international lists. John Talabot's "fIN" and "So Will Be Now…" are #29 and #33 in the albums and songs lists, respectively. But that's the only Spanish entries among the 75 albums and 100 songs. Isn't Spanish music better regarded than that in its homeland? If not, why bother making national lists at all? Maybe other magazines hold Spanish music higher than Playground?
