Films of the 1980s: 1989 (2017 edition)

Post by Petri »

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the IMDb list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 31th of August. If you haven't voted for your favorite movies of 1988 there's is still two weeks left to do it.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1989:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

I decided not to vote for Dekalog (it would be very high on my list. Last time Stephan (host then) decided it was ineligile but this time you can vote for it. However
Gillingham wrote: 7. Dekalog, Jeden (Krzysztof Kieslowski)
I don't think you can vote for an individual episode (although they are more like movies than the whole mini-series (except A Short Film About Killing (1988) and A Short Film About Love (1988) which are (of course) eligible). (Jeden could be my #1 of the year.)

I consider the Dekalog eligible. TSP's main list is what I consider to be the trump card.

1) Batman
2) The Dekalog
3) My Left Foot
4) Santa Sangre
5) Glory
6) Henry V
7) Say Anything...
8) Mystery Train
9) The Little Mermaid
10) Do the Right Thing
11) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
12) Crimes and Misdemeanors
13) Knick Knack [short]
14) Driving Miss Daisy
15) Back to the Future 2

This was a pretty great year for movies. I was surprised I had this many picks for the full year.

Last day to vote!

By the way do you want that the final thread is open for a month or two months (will open it tomorrow)?

And I'm really grateful if someone wants to help to find quotes or URL's of the pictures of the movies.

I'd prefer two months to have more time to get some of the movies in, but I'm also fine with one month.

Little Mermaid missed the final by one point. I've seen it when I was 8 so maybe I should rewatch it someday. Dekalog wasn't eligible last time.
