I think Phoenix song is "1901".

Pretty funny that you included Die Ärzte in this list (despite misspelling them a little bit :P)! How did you discover them?

Anyway, I'd argue that their most influential period was mid 80's til mid 90's. Candidates for their single most iconic/influential song during that period would be Zu spät or Schrei nach Liebe, probably their single best-known song (besides the very poppy radio hit Westerland). An anti-right wing protest song, it actually became number one on the German charts in 2015 22 years after its initial release thanks to a campaign that promoted the song as a statement against xenophobic riots in Germany and the rise of populism in general.

Concerning Tocotronic, my picks would be Freiburg or Die Idee ist gut, doch die Welt noch nicht bereit from their very influential debut as prime examples of their early raw, unpolished & noisy sound. From the late 90's on Tocotronic gradually transformed into elder statesmen of German Indie Rock, mainly performing grandiose, intricate and very literate songs in the 2000's while still retaining their youthful, whimsical edge. The best example of this period is, in my opinion, Pure Vernunft darf niemals siegen.

Just a question I'm asking myself: is "Heaven or Las Vegas" the most influential Cocteau Twins song? I would've bet on "Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops" or "Lorelei", but I'll admit I'm not as familiar with their discography as I should.

Lol, I'll fix the Die Ärtze spelling. I found them through a list on Laut (sadly not quite eligible - two writers) and only know that they're a famous German punk group, which fits the criteria of the list quite well. I assumed Junge was their most famous song, but I'll add one of their more famous ones.
And I'll include one of the other Tocotronic songs. Thanks!

Neither am I, but that's the one I hear cited the most as their best (at least on '90s song lists).

Otherwise, it's a seriously more than competent top 300 you have here. We can always argue over the rankings and the stuff that missed the cut (there will always be) but that's the same with all lists. Congrats for a great job!
Whoops! Will fix that. But thank you! I'm glad I've covered most of the bases. Not all of the songs are favorites of mine (never cared much for Linkin Park or Fall Out Boy), but I can't act like they didn't have a huge impact on modern alt-rock.

The two I mentioned have little chances of being featured in a 1990s list ;) Otherwise, I think it's worth investigating. If a dream rock/shoegazing specialist could come around...

Fixed again.

And I don't want to think too hard about dream rock and shoegaze, cuz now I just remembered Little Fluffy Clouds by The Orb, and I already included plenty (and, in some cases, very high).

You can relieve your mind, "Little Fluffy Clouds" is an electro-ambient track, not a dream rock one ;) Don't let your thoughts go that way, or else you'll start wondering if Kid A-era Radiohead can still be considered alternative rock (I personally don't think so) and you'd then have to include some Aphex Twin and glitch music to account for an influence on them, and in my opinion the whole thing would turn absurd ;)

Your top is great as is, don't try to over-finetune it.

Yeah, I'm done. The list is finished. I was thinking of adding some Israeli alt-rock I've heard (Mashina is the most famous of that group) but I can't remember the names of the songs that well so whatever. List is closed! Thank you for your help.

And I have a decent justification for keeping In the Air Tonight, no matter how far from alternative Phil Collins became (or was, really), but if one song has to go, it might be that one. But again, I'm not changing the list anymore.

OK, one edit, actually: You Get What You Give joins the ranks since I accidentally listed Misery Business twice.

Brilliant. Also, should No Rain be on the list? Debating whether or not it's better than You Get What You Give (most would say the latter, including me, but I enjoy both a lot and they were both very successful 90s alt-rock singles).

Prince always bridged the gap between alt-rock and R&B. He's in the Alternative Record Guide that helped me out so much and Sign O' the Times is easily one of his most experimental albums, never more so than on the title track. So that's why he's here. (It could've been weirder - I have a whole explanation for how ABBA could be considered alternative based on that book, but I'm not in the mood to give it, so they didn't make the cut.

Ask and ye shall receive!

Missing songs, most of which I included a backup for just to keep the number at 300 (with mixed success):
My Bloody Valentine | You Made Me Realize [I put in my original pick, Only Shallow, just to make sure they still had representation on the list]
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts | Bad Reputation [Spotify substitute: I Hate Myself for Loving You, also a great song]
Suede | Animal Nitrate [Spotify substitute: Yes by McAlmont and Butler - Bernard Butler was the guitarist for Suede, and this song is massively underrated]
Bonnie "Prince" Billy | I See a Darkness [I put in Johnny Cash's cover]
Glenn Branca | Lesson No. 1 for Electric Guitar
Die Ärtze | Schrei nach liebe [I put in Die Toten Hosen's version]

Actually, here's something bizarre: You Made Me Realize shows up on the little link, but not on the playlist itself when I open it on Spotify. Weird.

Oh :? It's weird that this one is regionally-locked in this sense since Branca is associated with New York. I'm extremely sorry then, and that's a real shame :(

I'd figure it'd just be a montage of all the songs. My initial idea was to have the list be shorter, in chronological order, and designed to have each song flow into the other, but that's obviously not what happened (and I'm glad for it, as it's much more accurate in its current state). So it'd probably be split up into 3 parts (300-201, 200-101, and 100-1).
