Sorry, I thought the sarcasm was implied. Sarah Neufeld has huge upper body strength; she can tell me whatever she wants. The girl lifts.
My bad, I know virtually nothing about the band members except that Win Butler is a great basketball player.

What a perfect timing for me that we have this poll right now! I've been a lot into female artists during the whole 2017 and a month ago I started to prepare myself for next year's all-time songs poll (where my list will look very different compared to the one I did in 2015). For that I decided to begin with separate playlists of favorite songs by decade and gender, so I was kind of on my way to make a list of songs by female artists as well.

Probably a bit because I'm inspired by my 10 year old daughter (who has promised to come up with a personal top 10 that I will be allowed to share!) I'm enjoying modern pop music a lot these days. My list also includes several songs from Asia, Hispanic and Lusitanic countries (and France, perhaps more obviously), where I think female artists have a more prominent position, at least within pop music. I however admit that I don't know that much about Asian or Latin music beyond my favorite songs on this list, so I'd gladly take recommendations based on my songs by Chaweewan Dumnern (the Sound of Siam compilation is incredible), Frances Yip, Orange Caramel, Girls' Generation, Meiko Kaji, Dengue Fever, Carla Morrison, Natalia Lafourcade, Gal Costa, Violeta Parra, Javiera Mena, Lhasa, Alaska y Dinarama, Jeanette and Madredeus.

I'm not done, but I'm so pleased with this project that I feel a need to post my playlist in progress:

A very preliminary top 65:

1 | Björk - All Is Full Of Love
2 | Daughter - New Ways
3 | Anaïs Mitchell - Why We Build The Wall
4 | Mazzy Star - Fade Into You

Hmm...since we're nominating individuals in music, I think that would be okay? I'm just not sure how much support they would get, but I don't see an issue as long as they were involved in making music to some degree.

I'm starting to work on my song list and am curious what opinions there are on Sly & the Family Stone. My current metric is to only include a song if I feel like it has significant female vocal contributions (for bands that are male and female). There are only three songs by the band that I think might fit this qualification: "Runnin Away", "You Caught Me Smilin", and "Everyday People". I personally feel that the first two are songs I could place on my list, while the third I don't think meets the standard I have set.

By the way, I'm not necessarily asking because my opinion will be changed by what you say. Granted, that could happen, but I'm more or less trying to gauge how I should make these kinds of decisions moving forward.

Excellent idea, BleuPanda, of course I will submit a list (well, three lists).
And excellent lists so far, especially Henrik's. Love your list, my friend!

I'm definitely going to submit a songs list, though probably rather late in the game. An album list from me would likely be very short, and I have no idea how to even begin ranking artists.

And speaking of the all-time songs poll... I was planning to start it in March, since the 2015 poll started in March, but I was wondering, would that be too soon after this women in music poll? The results would come at some point in July, most likely, but I worry that people would make comparisons back to the results of this poll and just be sad if women aren't doing as well in the all-time poll.

It will soon take 7 years for the decade polls to make a full rotation, once the 2010s are added... Maybe the all-time song list could just as well be every 4 years instead of 3??

I’m pretty excited for the songs poll, and I think this poll will give women a boost and not lead to much disappointment, so I don’t have a problem with the timing. I love the 3-year rotation we have going.

I'm pretty sure I said something like this before when a list of women-only music was posted in the Critic's List part of the forum, but I do find it somewhat weird to treat women in this way. It is meant positively of course, but it has the unfortunate side effect of turning women once again into something different. As a group that needs their own topic to get appreciated. It rubs me the wrong way somehow, regardless of intentions. The fact that women work on so many projects with men (perfectly exemplified by the fact that most of the discussions here are about which songs qualify as female and which don't) show that they are an organic part of music, not a standalone group of entities from the outside. They are not a genre, not a perfectly outlined country with a border, but a real part of music in all its facets. I guess this is deserving of celebration, but you wish it was so bloody obvious that it didn't need something like this anymore.

Sure, women haven't always been treated seriously in music. This varies per country and genre of course. Folk has always favored women, metal is still uncomfortable with them. Things are far better now than they ever were, as I feel that at least half of the great music is made by women now, something which wasn't always possible. Music critics are mostly male which might in some way have worked against them (though we are mostly male here too). The rock revolution of the sixties, which is so many times referred to as the most important musical point in the history of at least the last 100 years, was perhaps the most unkind era for women (most great female performers of the era performed outside of rock dichotomy; basically Janis Joplin and Tina Turner were the only two female rockers with big names of the time). That has hurt their status. So yeah, those things make you pause and want to list their achievements.

However, before I joined this forum I barely knew that "listening to women" was such an issue; perhaps a naivety of me. I always listened to them for probably half of my time. I have two friends who claim to listen only to men, because "real men don't listen to women", but these guys always seemed like the outliers, not the rule.

In some ways, I want to make these lists. I have a lot of favorite albums, songs and artists that qualify so it is not a problem and I would also not mind to spend the last few months of the year to catch up to some albums and songs I missed, never heard of or just haven't listened to in some time. Discovering new music is what is all about at the end of the day and listening to all these women will surely prove worthwhile. But I need some time to think whether this whole thing sits well enough with me to continue on with it. [also, I have another personal music project planned from mid-November onward and I'm not sure I want to scratch it for this]

Just some personal thoughts. Not meant as criticism, but more as a reflection on my part. Make of it what you will.

I always loved dreampop/shoegaze and twee BECAUSE of how female friendly the genres are. How often can you name a genre like dreampop where a band features a female vocalist that pretty much pioneered the entire genre. I’m talking of course about The Cocteau Twins Elizabeth Fraser but they’re constantly being overshadowed by their male contemporaries such as the Jesus and Mary Chain or MBV who you forget even sometimes features a female vocalist because Kevin Shields obscures the rest of them. I practically had to write a thesis just to nudge others from the group to get the Cocteaus into our very own HOF :D

Hmm...with all the confusion it's causing, are people even wanting an album version for this? Really, the album poll was recent enough we could always just look at it if we wanted to see the top albums involving women. I know I'm much more interested in the other two polls, and they're much easier to define what does and doesn't qualify.

In response to Rob's message, while I think it's nice to believe we should just treat everyone equally, that doesn't always work in practice, and one of the best ways to make it work is to actively take effort in making it work. It might be odd with women, since they are half the population, but think of it with more overlooked groups. Are you opposed to celebrating our favorite artists from Japan, or actively seeking out the voices of genderqueer people? Many people who would enjoy music by those artists likely wouldn't know they exist without taking the effort to find them. Now imagine if we refused to hold those discussions because we believed they should be treated the same as anyone else, while also not actually talking about them in our usual circle. It's a good way of erasing the presence of certain groups. This holds especially true when we move into other mediums; if we don't make a point to discuss female directors, there are, what, four who might be discussed?

Even women are largely overlooked; the highest woman on acclaimed music's list is Madonna at #27...and even as the #1 most acclaimed woman on this site, it's easy to see she isn't taken as seriously as the artists that surround her.

BleuPanda wrote:Are you opposed to celebrating our favorite artists from Japan, or actively seeking out the voices of genderqueer people?
Well, first off I only seek out music based in genre and time periods, not really based on the personal backgrounds of the artists. I do think there is a big difference between looking at regional music and gender/ sexuality based music. Japanese music has a lot of barriers. The language is one, a completely unknown musical tradition is another and above all that it hardly has any representation outside of its borders. For the most part, you really have to seek out Japanese music is you want to know it, go to Japanese sources. Women, genderqueer people, etc. might be underrepresented in some ways but they are very much part of our western culture and media representation (even if not always in an ideal way). In large ways, only English language music really travels across borders (though were I'm from there is certainly a solid marker for French and German music, as well as some for Italian and Spanish music). Instrumentals too of course, but they aren't as popular as they used to be.
Now imagine if we refused to hold those discussions because we believed they should be treated the same as anyone else, while also not actually talking about them in our usual circle. It's a good way of erasing the presence of certain groups. I see what you're saying, but this isn't quite what I'm getting at. You can only shut women out when you keep them off every list. If you make a main top 1000 albums and hardly get any women in then that is bad. Making a separate list with only women besides the main one can come across as saying: "Well we don't think you are good enough for the big leagues, but here are still some albums/ songs we enjoy". Perhaps it is good in that it highlights glaring omissions, which might fix things. That's what I like about this game. But the feeling that women are once again "the other" and need special assistance to go places is what sits badly with me, even if I notice the good intentions.
Even women are largely overlooked; the highest woman on acclaimed music's list is Madonna at #27...and even as the #1 most acclaimed woman on this site, it's easy to see she isn't taken as seriously as the artists that surround her.
I agree here. The main artist and especially the top of the album list are a sorry place for women. [Though personally I wouldn't put Madonna even in a top 500 of best female musicians, let alone a top 5000 artists in general, but that is just me].

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to shut down this game. In a way I'm looking forward to the results and perhaps participating. But this mostly as a way of discovering and sharing music. I prefer polls that take their time in preparation as you can go deep in advance of making your own list. As a feminist statement, though, I think it is a double-edged sword, regardless of intentions. But perhaps this angle isn't the only thing here.

Rob raises some good points about this exercise serving as an "othering" of sorts, but I think the benefits are worth it. Aside from being a fun set of polls that we have never done, these lists offer a great way to give these artists greater exposure: we've seen that community games of less acclaimed works (such as AM World Cup, Moderately Acclaimed Albums, Unacclaimed) have given a boost to certain albums and songs, and I feel that this could do the same.

Moreover, I think such exposure is warranted. What we all have in common is that we ventured upon this site with an interest in critics lists, which have certainly contributed to the perception that the greatest music is created by men, and since these lists often inform us of what to listen to, I feel that our lists reflect such inherent (though I suspect subconscious) biases.

BleuPanda wrote:Hmm...with all the confusion it's causing, are people even wanting an album version for this? Really, the album poll was recent enough we could always just look at it if we wanted to see the top albums involving women. I know I'm much more interested in the other two polls, and they're much easier to define what does and doesn't qualify.
I was thinking along the same lines as you, BleuPanda, until I stumbled upon this list, list that was previously discussed here (not finding too much support here). I like it a lot though despite –like any other list– its glaring omissions (BleuPanda, you'll find particularly offensive the absence of The Knife/Fever Ray and St. Vincent). It showcases the impressive quality and variety of the albums made by women, having a good balance of styles, decades and mainstream/indie artists. I'm glad to see that finally we will have the albums poll. This NPR list (plus Henrik's song list) will determine my listening for the following weeks until I come with my own lists on the subject.
On the NPR list they included "some by mixed-gender bands, like Fleetwood Mac and X, that, in our view, relied on women's creativity for their spark" (quoting Ann Powers, NPR critic). So a similar rule that the one you included, with "any album featuring notable songwriting contributions from a woman/women within the band." So, if I understood it well, albums like Chic's "Risqué" or ABBA's "Arrival" are not eligible despite having female lead vocals because the songwriters were male, even if songs from these albums are eligible for the songs list. Am I right? If the answer is yes I'm perfectly OK with it.

I think that's what I'm going for? I don't know if all people will agree, but I feel like that's the best method of judging the most important figure behind an album. I still think it's one of those things where, if an album is on a questionable border, we can discuss it as it comes up. Like, I probably wouldn't have paid any attention to Risque or Arrival getting votes, as I don't think people would really have problems one way or another.

Perhaps I should add "or has lead vocals by a woman on majority of tracks"?

Mmm, I'm not sure. Looking at the NPR list there are enough excellent albums without including it but maybe if the "lead vocal" is OK for songs could apply with albums too. I don't know. Let's see what other people thinks...
