Thanks as always, Henrik

Depeche Mode, Kendrick Lamar, and Pearl Jam are new(?) top 100 artists. AC/DC now at #57!

Seems odd to see "Be My Baby" around the very pinnacle of all musical recording. Just seems like an enjoyable song, nothing more.

I've always thought it was overrated myself. There's 3 or 4 by the Ronettes that I like better. But we are in the minority. People like Brian Wilson say that it's the greatest record ever made.

Wikipedia:

It is considered one of the best songs of the 1960s by Pitchfork Media, NME and Time. In 2004, the song was ranked 22 by Rolling Stone in its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and described as a "Rosetta stone for studio pioneers such as the Beatles and Brian Wilson," a notion supported by AllMusic who writes, "No less an authority than Brian Wilson has declared 'Be My Baby' the greatest pop record ever made—no arguments here." In 1999, it was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame, and in 2006, the Library of Congress honored the Ronettes' version by adding it to the United States National Recording Registry. In 2017, Billboard named the song #1 on their list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time.

Barbara Cane, vice president and general manager of writer-publisher relations for the songwriters’ agency BMI, estimated that the song has been played in 3.9 million feature presentations on radio and television since 1963. "That means it’s been played for the equivalent of 17 years back to back."

"Be My Baby" was recorded in July 1963 at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles. Spector recorded a range of instruments including guitars, saxophones, multiple pianos, and horns with innovative studio mixing and over-dubbing. Spector described his production method as "a Wagnerian approach to rock & roll", which became known as the wall of sound. "Be My Baby" was one of the first times Phil Spector used a full orchestra in his recording.[citation needed] The drums were played by Hal Blaine. The Blossoms, led by Darlene Love, and Sonny and Cher were part of the group of guests that provided additional backup vocals. Guitars on the session were played by Tommy Tedesco and Bill Pitman, after whom the instrumental "Tedesco and Pitman" on the B-side of the single was named.

The song was arranged by Spector regular Jack Nitzsche and engineered by Larry Levine.[7] Ronnie Spector is the only Ronette to appear on the record.

In her autobiography, lead vocalist Ronnie Spector relates that she was on tour with Joey Dee and the Starlighters when "Be My Baby" was introduced by Dick Clark on American Bandstand as the "Record of the Century."

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys developed a fervent obsession with the song, leading Spector to quip: "I'd like to have a nickel for every joint he smoked trying to figure out how I got the 'Be My Baby' sound." Wilson told The New York Times in 2013 that he has listened to the song more than 1,000 times. Wilson explains his reaction to hearing the record for the first time:

I was in my car with my girlfriend and we were driving around... When all of a sudden this guy Wink Martindale—a disc jockey—he goes, "All right! Here we go with 'Be My Baby' by the Ronettes." It started playing … All of a sudden it got into this part—"be my, be my baby"—and I said "What is—what?! Whoa whoa!" I pulled over to the side of the street of the curb and went, "...My God! ...Wait a minute! ...No way!" I was flipping out. I really did flip out. Balls-out totally freaked out when I heard. … In a way it wasn't like having your mind blown, it was like having your mind revamped. It's like, once you've heard that record, you're a fan forever.

The song ultimately revamped Wilson's songwriting and creative aspirations. Wilson considers his "Don't Worry Baby" to be the male answer to "Be My Baby". At one point, he instructed Beach Boys engineer Stephen Desper to create a tape loop consisting only of the song's chorus, listening to it for several hours in what Desper saw as "some kind of a trance". Wilson's daughter Carnie stated that during her childhood: "I woke up every morning to boom boom-boom pow! Boom boom-boom pow! Every day." Brian Wilson eventually did a cover of the song with the Beach Boys in July 1980 and later in 2000 on his solo album Live at the Roxy Theatre.

So it has happened. Really.

And that is very welcome. I just came home from work late today, after two of the heaviest and restless weeks I have ever had and this update almost feels like a reward. I like to go through everything from bottom to top in slow fashion, taking in as much as possible. I'm a little too tired to look into it that much; I only did the song list so far, from 10.000 to 7.500, but it is very enjoyable once again. So much music yet to discover.

My series of 6.000 Songs will be updated too, probably in the weekend, to fit the new placements and of course to change the title. I noticed that two songs I wrote about in that series have fallen of the top 1.000 completely. About one, Soldiers Joy by Git Tanner & His Skillet Lickers I am sad, but I would lie if I said that I will miss Graham Parker's Local Girls.

I also scrolled to the bubblers to see which songs fell off the list and noticed that a lot of them were pre-fifties songs. Also a lot of songs whose placement dropped by a huge amount are from that era. That is a sad trend, although I'm not sure if they are replaced with some other songs from those days.

About the design change, the new look is welcome. I only miss that the menu on the left is a disconnect entity, that remains solid while scrolling down. It's not a necessity, but was nice to have. Since the top 3000 and top 10.000 are now both presented as long, long lists, it is perhaps needed more than ever. Loading also goes slower with such long lists, I'm afraid. I'm not sure if it makes is more easy to navigate.

I have some other observations (positive ones, to be sure), but they will come later.

"Be My Baby" is great and stuff, but it could just as well be outside of the Top 100 songs and I wouldn't be bothered. (Though I guess don't tell Brian Wilson that... damn, I wonder what his daughter Carnie thinks of that song now.)

Everything looks great, Henrik. Thanks so much!

I'm still pouring through the vast update, but among the changes that excite me most are the continued ascents for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and OK Computer, my #1 and #4 albums respectively. Also, I can't help but love what will undoubtedly be an eternal struggle for the most acclaimed album of 2012. Kendrick barely edges Frank on my personal list, as well, though they both manage to squeeze into my top ten.

Lastly, I wonder if bubblers will always be a feature on the site. As a forumer once said, they strike me as "statistical noise." Ideally, I'd like to see one firm number of ranked songs and albums and no bubblers, but it's really just a minor qualm.

I thoroughly strongly totally disagree with that. The bubblers are a goldmine of hidden treasures. In fact, they're a part of what makes AM a richer resource than many to me. I hope they're going nowhere.

Bubblers don't impact ratings and rankings, so they're easily tuned out by those regarding them as noise. But for those who want deep cuts, they're a wonderful resource.

In case I wasn’t clear, I’m not suggesting deleting the albums and songs that are bubbling under; I’d just rather see a ranking next to each of them. It seems to me the bubblers are already listed by acclaim, i.e. the first bubbler for a given year appears to be more acclaimed than the last entry listed, so I feel they might as well have a ranking next to them.

But it already seems the desire to keep the “bubbler” label outweighs my interest in retiring it, so long live bubblers! :)

Yes, the bubblers are sorted by their score, but the ranking would only be true among the albums and songs included on AM. There are other albums/songs that would squeeze in among the bubblers.

Thanks for all that you do, Henrik. I'm excited to dig into the new update! Hard to believe that I have been using AcclaimedMusic as a resource for about 10 years. I'm glad the site continues to be a "living document," and I'm grateful for all your hard work on each update.

And in some cases (Sleater-Kinney, Can, Kendrick Lamar), it seems that neither is the right option :p

On a "personal stats" on the albums list :

There are now 1197 albums ranked that I am 100% sure I have heard from start to finish (which means there are somewhere between 1200 and 1250 I actually have).

My longest streak of unheard albums was 20 albums long, now I have 2 27 albums streaks... (the 2nd won't last as it has an album I had planned to listen to this week anyway).
My longest streak of albums I have heart is 156 albums long. It's actually not the top 156, as I still haven't endured Layla and Assorted Songs in one sitting (though I do have heard all its songs at least once), but goes from the album ranked next, Screamadelica, to Rock Bottom (I got pretty close to listening to Superunknown as a whole, probably had 2 songs to go, but got interrupted and never tried again... I like it but it's way too long).

And in an old AM tradition, here is the first 10 unheard albums streak, from 1298 to 1307 :

Björk - Medulla
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong - Ella and Louis
Steely Dan - Katy Lied
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Night Moves
Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes
Karen Dalton - It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best
Pharoah Sanders - Karma
The Offspring - Smash
Randy Newman - Little Criminals
Elvis Costello and The Attractions - Trust

It's relatively unlikely I have never heard Smash from start to finish, but as I'm not 100% sure I don't count it.

Here's my unheard streak, from 2213 to 2222. Getting further and further back (I'm almost 2000 albums through the top 3000, so it's a rare occurrence).

Jimmy Giuffre 3 - Fusion/1961
Joe Ely - Honky Tonk Masquerade
Womack and Womack - Love Wars
Judas Priest - Screaming Over Vengeance
Can - Soon Over Babaluma
Son Volt - Trace
Enya - Watermark
System of a Down - System of a Down

Ooh, I like this because it makes it easier to see an artist's songs in order of their rank.

I know TSPDT has a nice filter feature to make it more elegant, but I'm not sure how difficult that would be to implement (or if it would be possible to add this sort feature on the individual artist pages).

Edit: And, of course, sorting by this for artist doesn't help if an artist has multiple names (i.e. Prince with and without his backing bands, Smashing Pumpkins with or without a The).

Since you're the other big LCD Soundsystem fan on this forum, I'd heavily recommend both Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret and Welcome to the Pleasuredome.

I highly recommend Figure 8. Just heard it for the first time recently, and then I relistened about 10 times. Elliott Smith will definitely see a boost from me in future polls.

I've heard the top 505, and my first gap is 554-563.

On the album side, only 2 years have a change of #1 :
1993 : In Utero over Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
2012 : good kid m.A.A.d city over Channel Orange

That means Nirvana and Kendrick Lamar (thanks to 2015 albums now being included) join a very short list of artists with 2 albums being the most acclaimed of their respective years.
The list also includes Thelonious Monk (2 years in a row with vol 1 and vol 2 of Genius of Modern Music), Miles Davis, Public Enemy and R.E.M.
Radiohead and The Beatles stand tall with 3 each (with a 10 year gap between OK Computer and In Rainbows, the longest between 2 #1 albums, R.E.M. being 1 year short.)

I can't really make a recommendation there because they're all awesome. Although if I had to give priorities, I'd say: The Smiths, Prince, Patti Smith, Television, Arcade Fire, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beatles, Michael Jackson.

No matter what, you won't be losing your time with any of those.

Here, I know that Dinosaur Jr., Tori Amos, David Bowie and PJ Harvey are awesome. The Breeders, Captain Beefheart and Genesis are great too, although I know that the latter is probably not a high priority if you're not into prog (even though the song structures are shorter than usual there). Neil Young's album is one of his most depressing, so I'm rarely in the mood for it, while Tracy Chapman's a great folk album, but it's not my tastes.
Nick wrote:My first ten album gap...

922 Roxy Music - Siren
923 Leonard Cohen - Songs from a Room
924 Tindersticks - Tindersticks
925 Bud Powell - The Amazing Bud Powell
926 Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
927 Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
928 Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasuredome
929 Johnny Burnette - Johnny Burnette and the Rock 'n Roll Trio
930 Elliott Smith - Figure 8
931 XTC - English Settlement
Bud Powell, Soft Cell, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and XTC are my favourites here. I need to give a new spin to Roxy Music, I remember liking it the first time I listened to it.

Also, keeping the tradition alive, I've heard the first 362 albums, which is by far my longest streak. As for my first streak of 10 albums I haven't heard, it's actually 16:

859 Gene Clark No Other
860 Pantera Vulgar Display of Power
861 Ghostface Killah Fishscale
862 X-Ray Spex Germfree Adolescents
863 Spoon Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
864 Weather Report Heavy Weather
865 The Hold Steady Boys and Girls in America
866 Tim Buckley Goodbye and Hello
867 Lee Morgan The Sidewinder
868 Frank Sinatra Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely
869 Ry Cooder Paradise and Lunch
870 Big Black Songs About Fucking
871 The Boo Radleys Giant Steps
872 Tina Turner Private Dancer
873 Stiff Little Fingers Inflammable Material
874 Cat Power You Are Free
Strong group there! The only ones I find slightly less prioritary are Spoon and Ry Cooder, but other people will probably disagree with me. The rest is fantastic.
BleuPanda wrote:Here's my unheard streak, from 2213 to 2222. Getting further and further back (I'm almost 2000 albums through the top 3000, so it's a rare occurrence).
Wes Montgomery - Full House
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Jimmy Giuffre 3 - Fusion/1961
Joe Ely - Honky Tonk Masquerade
Womack and Womack - Love Wars
Judas Priest - Screaming Over Vengeance
Can - Soon Over Babaluma
Son Volt - Trace
Enya - Watermark
System of a Down - System of a Down
I'm not very familiar with these. I'd say System of a Down and Joe Ely are the best here, followed by Iron Maiden, Jimmy Giuffre, Judas Priest and Enya. I don't remember the Can one, and I think I never heard the others.
Nassim wrote: And in an old AM tradition, here is the first 10 unheard albums streak, from 1298 to 1307 :

Björk - Medulla
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong - Ella and Louis
Steely Dan - Katy Lied
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Night Moves
Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes
Karen Dalton - It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best
Pharoah Sanders - Karma
The Offspring - Smash
Randy Newman - Little Criminals
Elvis Costello and The Attractions - Trust

It's relatively unlikely I have never heard Smash from start to finish, but as I'm not 100% sure I don't count it.
Björk and Steely Dan are the best here. Next are Randy Newman (although I know some people don't like him, which baffles me a bit) and Costello. I don't remember the others, but I know I didn't listen to the Pharoah Sanders album, something I need to fix quickly.

Alabama Shakes : Sound & Color over Boys & Girls
Bill Fay : Bill Fay over Life Is People
The Charlatans : Tellin' Stories over Some Friendly
Sturgill Simpson : A Sailor's Guide to Earth over Metamodern Sounds in Country Music

That showed the limitations of doing a quick excel formula, as I had in the list The Velvet Underground for White Light/White Heat passing The Velvet Underground, but not taking into account that there is an album by “The Velvet Underground & Nico” way ahead

Most probably ;) I really like Can, but it's been a while since I last listened to this one so I just forgot it.

I'm not overly familiar with your group of albums, but I have listened at least once to all of them, except for the Tocotronic one. They're all interesting in their respective styles, although I'd say the Missy Elliott one is slightly less successful than her other two masterpieces (but only by a small margin, it's still a rewarding listen), and the Marshall Crenshaw album tends to fall into the guilty pleasure category for me. Entertaining and very catchy, but perhaps not essential.

Ooh, the 10 album streak thing!

1628. Suzanne Vega - Suzanne Vega
1629. Louis Armstrong - Louis Armstrong Plays w.c. Handy
1630. Nick Lowe - Jesus of Cool / Pure Pop For Now People
1631. The Horrors - Skying
1632. Betty Carter - The AUdience With Betty Carter
1633. The Adverts - Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts
1634. Black Uhuru - Red
1635. Silver Apples - Silver Apples
1636. Caetano Veloso - Estrangeiro
1637. The Go-Between - Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express

I'm not 100% sure I haven't heard Skying. If I have I get saved by Katranada and have no idea when it actually stops for me

Edit: If I have heard Skying (Which is quite likely because Primary Colours was year end top 10 for me) next "Can't remember" for me is 1799-1808, but again I can't remember if J.J. Cale - Naturally is something I listened to for BMAA.

Then one block where I can't remember if I've heard Slowhand, and I don't get thrown out for 100% sure until 1981-1990 with Blues de la frontera, Ballads, Throwing Muses, Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh, Eternally Yours, Peace Sells But Who's Buying, Todd, Bob Dylan, Newbuild, Generation Terrorists.

Playing this game is a lot of work when you listened to every single album in BMAA and the entire top 30-ish in Megacritic for the last several years.

I think many if not most of the members here know this already, but my top 3000 listening gap is zero. So is my owning gap. Henrik's amazing lists have been my record guide since the very first "20th Century's 500 Most Acclaimed Albums" list he posted to a European music forum back in 2000, and my love of music combined with my apparently undiagnosed obsessive-compulsiveness has led me to own the entirety of the top 3000, at all times. It's not necessarily a statement of pride, just a statement of fact.

Now, if I had to make a list of albums in the top 3000 that I've only listened to once, that would be a very different story...

That's awesome, Harold. Basically the same story here, though I didn't discover the site until 2002, and I no longer have most of my physical collection. There's probably a good handful of albums I haven't heard in the new update, but I would guess no real streaks. Haven't dug into the albums yet; auditing the whole Spotify songlist for now!

My ten album streak is:

636 Basement Jaxx Remedy
637 Can Ege Bamyasi
638 The National Alligator
639 Of Montreal Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
640 Al Green Let's Stay Together
641 Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...
642 The Slits Cut
643 Motörhead Ace of Spades
644 The Cure Seventeen Seconds
645 Sleater-Kinney No Cities to Love

Of these, I already own copies of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... and No Cities to Love, so I guess those will be the next I'll hear. Followed shortly thereafter by Alligator, since I'd like to get more into their music. I sing in the same vocal range as Matt Berninger and I'm always looking for more songs that fit my voice.

To my great disappointment, there isn't a single song ranked at the same position as the album it is from (well, except if my excel got fooled by a duet).
Actually there are only 2 cases of artists coincidence :
Kanye West has both a song and an album ranked at #377 and PJ Harvey at #490

At least there is a song whose ranked is also the release year : Pretend We're Dead by L7.
And an album : Peace Sells by Megadeth

Check the spreadsheet - it'll say NEW if it wasn't there before.
