Films of the 1970s: 1977 (2018 edition)

Post by BleuPanda »

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the IMDb list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is April 15. New rounds will be posted on the 15th and last day of each month.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

1. Annie Hall
2. Opening Night
3. Saturday Night Fever
4. The Spy Who Loved Me
5. Audrey Rose
6. Una giornata particolare [A Special Day]
7. Roots [mini-series]
8. New York, New York
9. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
10. The Last Wave
11. Equus
12. Soldaat van Oranje [Soldier of Orange]
13. Capricorn One

17. Fun with Dick and Jane
18. Cet obscur objet du désir [That Obscure Object of Desire]
19. Jesus of Nazareth [mini-series]
20. A Bridge Too Far

I assume the miniseries Roots and Jesus of Nazareth aren't eligible, because they didn't have a theatrical release. Otherwise I would vote for them.

EDIT: Both mini-series are now included.

Is that the usual justification? I'm personally fine with mini-series of any form getting included; I don't think method of distribution should be the determining factor. Would other people have a problem with this?

My whole mindset is that mini-series bridge a gap between television and film; what really matters is that film are typically self-contained narratives in a set amount of time while television is episodic, with mini-series able to fit within both categories. But I also find myself getting increasingly radical about blurring the line between film and television; is a season of television really that different from a mini-series, which we already argue is close enough to film to qualify? In the end, film and television are simply variations on the same medium...

So, for me, either mini-series are or are not eligible; method of distribution is a non-factor.

After all TV films are allowed too. I'll edit my list to include them.
