2012 AMF EOY Album Poll - Results

Post by Jackson »

It's time for the results of our annual end of year poll. 35 of our users voted in this year's poll, with 391 unique albums receiving votes.

Past Champions:

2005 | Sufjan Stevens | Illinois
2006 | Belle & Sebastian | The Life Pursuit
2007 | LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver
2008 | Fleet Foxes | Fleet Foxes
2009 | Animal Collective | Merriweather Post Pavilion
2010 | Kanye West | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
2011 | PJ Harvey | Let England Shake

One interesting note about these past winners: only one of them released an album this year (Animal Collective), and that didn't even make the top 100!

I'll post the 100-51 section quickly. Only two voters' #1 albums failed to make the top 100: Romain (King Tuff - King Tuff) and JamieW (Silversun Pickups - Neck of the Woods).

This section is full of AMF specials! Ebo Taylor did not make a single critics' list in our spreadsheet, and iamamiwhoami barely made a dent. I had also never heard of Damien Jurado before compiling this.

Ten Freedom Summers had the highest points per vote of any album in the top 50, with four of its five voters putting it in their top 5. I really need to listen to it, but never could find it anywhere. That album and Tallest Man on Earth are the only significant departures from the critics in this section.

Thanks for the great show so far, Jackson. Also, I've noticed that a few people in different threads have mentioned having trouble finding Wadada Leo Smith's "Ten Freedom Summers." I have been listening to it a lot (including this moment) on Grooveshark. I just wanted to provide the link, because it really is a staggering piece of work, in history, scope, and just wonderful music.

Really solid section here. Kindred was ranked so low only because it was an EP, so I'm thrilled that the voters here looked passed it. Killer Mike and Leonard Cohen make for an interesting back-to-back couplet, I'm surprised both were so high.

Glad to see Killer Mike so high as well. I was a bit underwhelmed the first time I listened to the album - it's not particularly innovative or mind-blowing. But it's solid in a way that a lot of albums-of-the-week are not, and I found myself continuing to listen to it long after it's release. "Reagan" and "R.A.P. Music" both got screwed on the critics' song list, in my opinion.

Do we really think Frank Ocean is going to be #1 here as well? I've sensed a lukewarm reaction to Channel Orange here, but maybe that's only because the adulation elsewhere on the Internet has been so high.

At this point, the only other album I could see at number 1 would be "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City". I just don't think other forum favorites like "The Seer" or "Lonerism" have enough support to be number 1. I think they're just a bit too divisive.

Swans work their way up from 19th in the best-of-2010 poll, though it seems like no one was talking about them around here then. Besides the number 1 album, The Seer had the highest Points/Vote out of any top 30 album. Bloom was a surprise for me, I never made it past track 2 of that album.

Kendrick and Frank as our top 2? No real surprises here. Kind of interesting how our polls prior to 2010 really haven't been too kind to black solo artists, and then Kanye comes along in 2010 and wins the whole thing. Now we have 2 black solo artists as our top 2 albums.

I'm not sure if that's a trend or just coincidence. Personally I think that it just so happened that three black artists released HUGE albums in the last three years.

There tend to be one or two albums by black solo artists who all the critics decide are the official 'black solo artists of the year'. They end up at the top of every list and all the others are ignored.

I agree it's more coincidence than trend, but I wouldn't say Killer Mike, Miguel, or Actress have been 'ignored' this year.

In the end it was a good old-fashioned blowout. With 6 number one votes, Frank had not only the most points and votes, but the second-most points-per-vote out of the top 50.

Not so surprised by the 1-2 result but to see Beach House so high required a second-take. They've been through quite a backlash in some of the other music forums. Perhaps it's just been a vocal minority...

Great work and presentation, Jackson. I know that by the Top 10 the list got somewhat predictable, but on a whole, from 100-1, I thought this was a great list with a lot of diversity. Nice one, AM.

Oh man, those time-wrap moments are always a joy and full of embarrassing comments from myself! :D

2010 was such a fun poll; I was such a Joanna Newsom fan-boy and no one knew who's in and who's out of the top 10 and I thought I had like given half the votes she would receive, and Sufjan was receiving lots of love from people here and Moonbeam wasn't supportive of The Suburbs (haha) and Janelle was killing, too. And who could have seen some of those placements coming? I'm so used to the new forum that even the layout of the older one is incredibly nostalgic! :happy-bouncyblue:

Thanks a lot, Matski. Yeah, the topic was right up there. "Couldn't see the forest because of the trees" :angry-banghead:

Interesting stat: The only artist with more than 1 album in AMF EOY Top 10 this decade is ... Beach House (Teen Dream 2010 / Bloom 2012). Which is OK with me.

Still, the fact that Congratulations (album of the decade so far if u ask me) is nowhere to be found in 2010's Top 10 is a historical mistake :)

Wow, looking over the results of the 2010 and 2011 polls it seems as if the top 2 albums from 2010, 2011, and 2012 were all from solo artists. Coincidence? Probably. But interesting nonetheless.

I think there's more similarity between how Kanye West and Frank Ocean got to #1 than how PJ Harvey did.

The two of them were both able to drum up a huge amount of hype through social media, and gradually release singles before the album release. They (And Kendrick Lamar) have been among the first to really master using new social media for marketing.

This is old news at this point, but like sonofsamiam, I'll post the full list in easy-to-read format. I also included the 101-200 section so you can see where some of the other notable albums this year placed. Of course, the results are pretty insignificant toward the bottom of the list--the albums tied for 197 received exactly one #11 vote each.
