Survivors of the 60s (a morbid thread)

Post by Honorio »

Live in Phoenix wrote:The next 10 years are going to be really brutal for '60s musicians. A lot of them are in their mid or late '70s. It's more than I really want to think about. Some '50s rockers have had exceptionally long lives, though.
This comment from Live in Phoenix made me think about it and I've decided to make some minor research on the subject. I went to the list of top artists of the 1960s and I looked for the first 100 artists on the list, selecting the ones still alive and their actual age. In the case of bands I included the band members performing on the most acclaimed album (released during the 1960s) of the band.

The results:
- Only 53% of the artists featured on the list are still alive.
- The mean age of the "survivors" is 74,5 years so, as Live in Phoenix guessed, it's highly probable that many of them will die on the next 10 years.
- The 47% of the acclaimed artists from the 1960s are dead, with a mean age at the time of the death of 54,74 years.
- A significant 20,37% of the dead artists died before their 4th decade of life, including John Lennon, Brian Jones, Dennis Wilson, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Gram Parsons, John Coltrane, Otis Redding, Jim Morrison, John Bonham, Florence Ballard and Sam Cooke.

The list of the "survivors" of the 1960s:

What happens if you split the list by famous drug users?

4th decade of life would be your 30s. Most of the artists you listed did not die before their 4th decade of life.

Well, you're right, discord. Edited.

About the famous drug users, jirin, it's surprising to see some of them (Keith Richards to state the obvious) getting to an advanced age.

Of course there's also people who used a lot of drugs at one point in their life and then stopped, like Dylan after his motorcycle accident.

Why no Neil Young on the list? Also on the list of people who did drugs and survived just long enough to quit.

I do not care when a famous artist dies old.
is the cycle of life, in addition they have explored your creativity and your talent.

Neil Young is 72 (in a few months, 73). Stevie Winwood, that young teenager from the Spencer Davis Group, is 70. The Moody Blues lost 1 guy this year, and the remaining Hall of Fame members are aged 71-77. Peter Gabriel, who started with Genesis in the late '60s, is practically a juvenile delinquent at 68.

For quite a few '60s rockers, we maybe need to subtract a few years from normal life expectancy. But it’s not ridiculous for someone to pass in their 70s, regardless.

The legend is that the 1960s are when rock music grew up and got really good, and never got as good again. Traditionally it's gotten the greatest musical press. Even if you push back a little on this legend, it's hard to think of the great majority of people on the upper list being wiped out before very long; they've just always been there. It’s kind of silly -- their age is public record -- but I didn't really know how close so many of them are to a critical age.

I realize this thread is about rockers of the 60s, but let's take a moment to marvel at the fact that three members of the inaugural class of the R&R Hall of Fame are still alive:

Little Richard - 85
Jerry Lee Lewis - 82
Don Everly - 81

Lewis is actually performing at Riot Fest here in Chicago next month!

My take on the legend of the 60s is it’s the decade where music producers learned how to monetize teenage rebelliousness. And that’s been the model mainstream rock has aspired to ever since. But the 60s did it first, when the whole culture of rebellion was new and shiny and not at all cynical.

It was also at a time where everybody consumed music through the same channels, so the rock scene was unified. And they put out a lot of great music, in an era where producers were less creatively intrusive. People sung the songs they wrote and meant something to them, they didn’t get matched up with a song bought from a struggling songwriter that best fit their brand.

All these factors together, you got a mainstream music scene that was varied and creative, never sounded boilerplate and captured people’s imaginations in a way they hadn’t been captured before.

Well, initially I took the list of Top artists of the 60s and I stopped when I got to 100. Neil Young, while #4 artist of the 1970s, was only #46 of the 1960s (accounting for his 1960s solo production since Buffalo Springfield was #42 of the 1960s).

Anyway I expanded the list to 250 (I haven't included the members of The Sonics due to lack of information on the net).
The updated stats:
- 52,4% of the artists featured on the list are still alive.
- The mean age of the "survivors" is 73,94.
- 47,6% of the acclaimed artists from the 1960s are dead, with a mean age at the time of the death of 56,62 years.
- 21% of the dead artists died during their first four decades of life.

The list of the "survivors" of the 1960s:
Name | Band | Age (years-old today)
Paul McCartney | The Beatles | 76
Ringo Starr | The Beatles | 78
Bob Dylan | 77
Mick Jagger | The Rolling Stones | 75

Interesting list, Honorio, but you have Jerry Garcia as both in the survivor in the dead list. Grateful Dead indeed.

You might want to consider including Todd Rundgren in this list because his first group (The Nazz) performed in the 1960's.

If you told the Monkees, the way they were forged would be the way most pop bands were formed 50 years later...

I wonder if you had to bet on the last survivor from that list who would you bet on?

I’d be tempted to take Keith Richards in that bet. Just because he’s been beating the odds for decades. If you went back in time to even the 80s and told them in 2019 Keith Richards was alive, they’d think for sure you were a fraud.

In 2067, Keith Richard will die as the oldest man alive, killed by a tiger escaped from the zoo.

I guess we weren't the only ones to notice. Updated numbers from today's The Week article "The Coming Death of Just About Every Rock Legend."

Debbie Harry and Bryan Ferry actually fit in age-wise with the '60s names. (You don't usually think about at what age a musician made it in the business. For instance, Jerry Lee Lewis -- still alive -- was born a year after Leonard Cohen.)
