Ah - Album vs Single release dates:-
Dexter wrote: 15 | Rachid Taha | Ya rayah
Single in 1997, but first released on s/t Album in 1993 - 70 points from 2 voters (Dan & I).

I will accept votes in 1997 (except from me & Dan).

Single in 1996 - 41 points from 4 voters (so far - results in about 22 hours) (Pauler, FrankLotion, Neil, & acr0320).

I will accept votes in 1997 (except from the 4 voters in 1996).

I haven’t met a single person who actually considered On and On a ‘96 song. It’s always in tandem with Baduizm.

1. Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out
2. Future Bible Heroes - Memories Of Love
3. Bob Dylan - Time Out Of Mind
4. Radiohead - OK Computer
5. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F#A# Infinity

12. The Dismemberment Plan - The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified
13. Elliot Smith - Either/Or

15. Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space

For some reason in my program has F#A# Infinity listed as 1998. So does allmusic.com. Went to Wikipedia and it has vinyl version released in 1997 and CD version in 1998, but everyone is probably listening to longer CD version. How do we want to consider this?

I think this is first year where albums I discovered in my listening game from last year made my list, El Corazon and Soul of Addis.

Tricky this. I also much prefer the single version, but as far as I know it wasn't released until 1999, so I was going to vote for it then.

I expect folks to vote for it as a 1997 album (it will be on my list). Whether you think of it as a two or three track album is really up to you.

OK, I'll also vote for it in the 1999 poll instead. It will likely be my #4 for 1999, so it will get more points than now and be even more full of love.

I've updated my songs list above.

Re: Songs and Albums of 1997 Poll

Post by Nassim »

1997 is my favorite year ever in music by a wide margin (only 2000 can compare) so this poll is a nightmare for me…
The song I ranked #25 here would have made the top 10 of half the years of the decade, and the top 15 for all but 94.
Even worse, the album I will probably rank fifth, the Lonesome Crowded West, is my 21st favorite of all time (and has basically no hope, if even I won’t put it in my top 10). Sorry Styrofoam Boots, any other year of the decade but 96 and 94, I’d have at least might have been able to help you put it close to a decent wildcard position (and I’ll be too busy worrying for Perfect From Now On anyway). Surprised it didn’t appear in your list by the way, Modest Mouse and Built to Spill go hand to hang in my mind.
To top it off, the competition is rough, with some albums and songs I’m less fond of pretty much guaranteed to move through and reduce the hopes of my favs. Cruel year !

I usually wait for later in the month to vote, but given there’s no way anything new cracks my top 15 :

Songs (all time rank)

1) Built to Spill - Velvet Waltz (#2)
2) Elliott Smith - Between the Bars (#3)
3) IAM - Demain C'est Loin (#9)
4) Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash (#20)
5) Grandaddy - Summer Here Kids (#76)
6) Foo Fighters - Hey, Johnny Park! (#95)
7) IAM - Dangereux (#101)
8) Modest Mouse - Doin' the Cockroach (#133)
9) Blink-182 - Josie (#138)
10) Mogwai - Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home (#144)
11) Radiohead - Electioneering (#158)
12) Blink-182 - Dammit (#162)
13) Radiohead - Airbag (#183)
14) Radiohead - No Surprises (#225)
15) Elliott Smith - Pictures of Me (#249)

16) Nobuo Uematsu - Cosmo Canyon (星降る峡谷 Hoshi Furu Kyōkoku) (#251)
17) Built to Spill - I Would Hurt a Fly (#291)
18) Millencolin - Twenty Two (#318)
19) Radiohead - Exit Music (For a Film) (#327)
20) IAM - Chez le Mac (#334)
21) Björk - Bachelorette (#364)
22) Elliott Smith - Say Yes (#384)
23) Modest Mouse - Cowboy Dan (#435)
24) Built to Spill - Randy Described Eternity (#469)
25) Radiohead - Climbing Up The Walls (#497)
26) Foo Fighters - Everlong
27) The Offspring - All I Want
28) Prodigy - Mindfields
29) Modest Mouse - Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice On Ice, Alright
30) Metallica - Fuel
31) The Beta Band - Dry the Rain
32) Sleater-Kinney - Turn It On
33) Mogwai - Mogwai Fear Satan
34) IAM - L'Empire du Côté Obscur
35) Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
36) Foo Fighters - My Hero
37) Spiritualized - Broken Heart
38) Deftones - My Own Summer (Shove It)
39) Sleater-Kinney - The Drama You've Been Craving
40) Gala - Let a Boy Cry
41) Sleater-Kinney - One More Hour
42) The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats
43) Blur - Beetlebum
44) Built to Spill - Made-Up Dreams
45) Blur - Song 2
46) Yo La Tengo - Autumn Sweater
47) Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
48) Robbie Williams - Angels
49) Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy
50) Björk - Joga

Albums to come later, the (incredible) top 8 is a lock but anything after that is stacked, but more fluid.

I notice Dig Me Out on a lot of album lists, which is great, but I'm surprised hardly any its songs make an appearance, as that is specifically a great song album to me. Words and Guitar is a hidden gem and there are the title track, One More Hour, Little Babies and Dance Song 97, among others. Of course, this is a stacked year, but still. I also hope Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind will make some more appearances on the higher end of lists.

Modest Mouse and Built to Spill go hand to hand in my mind.
On the first point, I would have to agree. Also, I missed Built to Spill because I didn't have the rating logged on RYM for some reason. Thus, I updated my list. :D

Both albums are in my top 5 for the year! And both will have songs on my list. In addition to the S-K songs you listed, I really enjoy "Buy Her Candy"
