My number one song didn’t make the top 1000, but I’m glad to see it place much higher here than on AM. And before we head into the top 1000 I thought I might as well write a few words about why I like it so much.

As my friends on here will know, I’ve been a massive fan of Jacques Brel for quite a few years now. Chanson is my favourite style of non-British/American music, and to me nobody does it better than Brel. There are many things about him that I treasure. To start off with, there’s the lyrics. I envy people who speak French and can therefore understand the meaning of his lyrics more directly. But even though his lyrics are often difficult to translate into English, it’s clear from reading the translations that they are wonderfully poetic; and you can still get a sense of how Brel mixed brutal honesty with beauty, and how he not only told a story but lived inside the songs and made you see things from his perspective.

But lyrics are not the most important thing to me when I listen to music. A song can have the most amazing lyrics in the world, but the music still have to do something to me. And Brel knew how to write spellbinding music and deliver it with an enormous sense of passion. You just need to watch one of his highly energetic live performances (of which there are many videos on YouTube) to get a sense of his phenomenal ability as a performer. But even without seeing him perform, you can still feel his passion by just listening to him sing.

Brel wrote the song “Vesoul” after a couple of visits to the city the song is named after. In the song he is accompanied by accordionist Marcel Azzola. When I listened to the song for the first time, I didn’t rate it as highly as some of Brel’s other songs. But the more I listened to it – and the more I realised that one of the things I like most about chanson is its unique use of the accordion – it soon had me under its spell.

During the song Brel cries out the words “chauffe, Marcel” a few times, effectively asking the accordionist to “heat up.” The end result is that Brel not only delivers one of his most passionate performances, but also manages to elicit a crazy, energetic display from a renowned accordionist. After listening to the song a few more times, I became beguiled by it. And when I compiled my all-time list for this poll, it was clear to me that there isn’t another song I’ve heard that I enjoy listening to more than “Vesoul.”
...will keep us together.

Based on the above, I gave Vesoul a first listen just now. I don't know Jacques Brel that well (although I believe Ne me quitte pas made my list - beautiful song), but this is an amazing song. Knowing what the excited "chauffe, chauffe"s meant just pumped me up even more while I was listening.

Might have been top 1000 if I hadn't brainfarted when compiling my list. Since posting I found 10 songs I somehow missed, and 3 of them are from Brel.
I included it Ces Gens-Là since I started my list based on my previous top 200, so there was no risk of forgetting that one, but for some reason only added Au Suivant on top, near the bottom of my list. Vesoul should have been in there too (though probably in the 800-900 region) but most unforgivable are my omission of La Chanson de Jacky and La Valse à 1000 Temps.

I'm glad to have introduced you to this song, StevieFan. As you don't know Brel that well, unless anyone else beats me to it I'll post a few links to songs when I get a moment over the next couple of days (including links to live performances, which is arguably the best way to experience Brel).

One cool thing about the old format of the list is that it was easier for songs like Theme de Yoyo, You Set the Scene, and Djed to place in the top 500 or so with only a few high votes. These are the types of songs that a few place highly, but hardly anyone uses them to fill out the 500-1000 section of the list. I'm sure there will be some surprises as we go higher but maybe there will be fewer of these unique types of tracks.

Dan wrote: During the song Brel cries out the words “chauffe, Marcel” a few times, effectively asking the accordionist to “heat up.” The end result is that Brel not only delivers one of his most passionate performances, but also manages to elicit a crazy, energetic display from a renowned accordionist. After listening to the song a few more times, I became beguiled by it. And when I compiled my all-time list for this poll, it was clear to me that there isn’t another song I’ve heard that I enjoy listening to more than “Vesoul.”
Thanks DAn for this comment.

Do you know "Chauffe Marcel" became part of everyday language after that song. Whether for the food, the car, for a speech, we can use this expression: "Allez, chauffe Marcel !" to encourage (sometimes with a little mockery) his car to start, his cake to bake, etc...

Otherwise, for the accordion, what Marcel plays is typical of what is played in what is called a "Bal musette".

21 for me, seems relatively evenly split between us so far.
I would assumed I was pretty close for Keep the Street Empty for Me, but Henrik beat me to it.
Funnily enough, the 2 songs outside my top 200 where I am still the highest voter are Step and 15 Step.

This seems like a fun game. I was the biggest fan of:

[1956] Elliott Smith | Say Yes
(a little surprised by this one)
[1938] The Band | I Shall Be Released
[1900] Alabama Shakes | Hold On
(tied with andyd1010 on that one)
[1886] The Strokes | Is This It
(I was very surprised by this one. I like the song a lot, but since it was my 199, I don't think of it as like, "my" song or one that I'm wildly attached to personally.)
[1800] Vince Guaraldi | Christmas Time Is Here
[1756] Counting Crows | Accidentally in Love
(I guarantee with my high (27 AT) placement and the fact that only two other people mentioned it, this song would be muuuuch lower without my ballot)
[1708] Miles Davis | Blue in Green
[1659] Bob Dylan | It Ain't Me Babe
[1653] Janis Ian | At Seventeen
[1616] Mogwai | 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong
[1590] Mitski | Your Best American Girl
[1566] The Allman Brothers Band | Whipping Post
[1489] Weezer | Island in the Sun
[1414] Violent Femmes | Add It Up
[1283] Modest Mouse | 3rd Planet
[1277] Azealia Banks | 212
[1272] Lady Lamb | Bird Balloons
[1265] Led Zeppelin | The Rain Song
[1258] Led Zeppelin | Going to California
[1195] Henry Mancini | Moon River
[1135] Van Morrison | Astral Weeks
[1117] Glenn Miller | Moonlight Serenade
(only the second biggest fan but still)
[1097] Godspeed You! Black Emperor | Storm
(tied with rumpdoll)
[1092] The Beatles | All You Need Is Love
[1059] Bat for Lashes | Laura
(second to our brave poll-runner)
[1049] The Killers | All These Things That I've Done
(above andyd1010 by a single space - we have similar taste in soul-affirming rock music I guess)
[1044] Tom Waits | Time

so that's 25 as biggest, 27 listed as fans. There's definitely trends here - Christmas Time Is Here, Blue In Green, Moon River, and Moonlight Serenade in particular would be a wonderful quick playlist. It seems like this exact metric of top fanhood within the 2000-1901 range rewards a certain place on the familiarity versus obscurity metric - idiosyncratic enough to be a top fan for these tracks but not so idiosyncratic to miss the top 2000 entirely.

I didn't know this amusing fact. I think I shall say "Chauffe Marcel" when my British colleauges start getting sleepy at 3pm at work. Ooooh, I could have fun with this.

I am (vaguely) familiar with musette. Unlike chanson, it's not a genre I can listen to all day long, but I do enjoy some of it (like Reine de Musette by Émile Vacher).

I'm only listed as a fan of 11 songs so far. I never thought I'd be the biggest fan of a Green Day song, but "Holiday" is catchy as fuck, so no guilty feelings here.

[1036] Duffy | Mercy
[1183] Little Richard | Good Golly, Miss Molly
[1263] Jacques Brel | Vesoul
[1308] Elmore James | Dust My Broom
[1340] Nas | It Ain't Hard to Tell

[1505] Chet Baker | My Funny Valentine
[1539] Supergrass | Alright
[1623] Katrina and the Waves | Walking on Sunshine
[1842] Goran Bregović | Ederlezi

I was the biggest fan only 15 times. It should be said that my #6 has also already appeared, but someone put it two spots higher than me, robbing me of the biggest fan honor (Bird Balloons).

[1985] The Doors | L.A. Woman (178)
[1937] Mount Eerie | Real Death (135)
[1835] Sleater-Kinney | One Beat (18)
[1722] Leonard Cohen | Sisters of Mercy (127)
[1661] Ennio Morricone | Once Upon a Time in the West (5)
[1643] The Alan Parsons Project | Old and Wise (7)
[1628] Sleater-Kinney | Entertain (28)
[1588] Al Stewart | Year of the Cat (42)
[1417] Joanna Newsom | Emily (43)
[1383] Aimee Mann | Save Me (95)
[1189] Ennio Morricone | The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (41)
[1177] The Beach Boys | Sloop John B (31)
[1123] Pet Shop Boys | It's a Sin (46)
[1009] Aerosmith | Walk This Way (102)
[1006] Nirvana | The Man Who Sold the World (99)

Apparently I like Sleater-Kinney and Ennio Morricone just a little more than you all.

And here is the playlist once again for those that missed it earlier. #1000 is a good place to post it again:

And damn, updating three playlists is a lot of work.

It feels like a good thing that I'm listed as a fan relatively many times (26) in the 2000-1001 section. It makes me "medium-rare" or "medium-weird".
