2012 AMF EOY Song Poll - Results

Post by sonofsamiam »

Hi everyone, I'm finally ready with the results, thanks for your patience.

There were 25 lists submitted this year, and 562 individual songs received votes. Also, I chose to go with the more standard weight distribution system this year, rather than doing this through rounds of voting. I'm not sure if that was controversial or not, but I didn't have much time for administration, and I was curious how this type of tallying would work out. My guess is that the results would have been similar either way.

Here is a quick rundown of our previous winners.

2008: Fleet Foxes | "White Winter Hymnal"
2009: Grizzly Bear | "Two Weeks"
2010: Kanye West | "Runaway"
2011: The Black Keys | "Lonely Boy"

With that, I'll start posting some results shortly.

So one neat thing that occurred in the tallying is that 97 songs received over 50 points. Since 50 points is the maximum 1 song can get, that meant that the songs that got only one #1 vote all made the Top 100, but in a tie for 98. This pleased me since it meant everyone's #1 appears somewhere, but those that got the lone vote are at the end of the list rather than wedged somewhere in the middle.

Here's a quick rundown of 51-98 (or 101 I suppose):

[98] Frank Ocean | Pink Matter | 50 points | 1 voter | 50.00 pts per vote | Critics Rank: 315 | Fan: Charlie Driggs (1)

So far, not too terribly far from the critics placements. The Shins got sort of forgotten as the year progressed, likely because Port of Morrow on the whole was sort of tepid. But I'm glad that "Simple Song" got recognized here, since it's a great stand-alone track.

Also, I'm surprised "Everything Is Embarrassing" didn't come in higher.

Really happy to see those Gregory Porter and Bill Fay songs make the Top 50...lovely stuff. It is entries like that where we kick the ass of the critics.

Also, the statistical dead heat between the GY!BE tracks made me smile.

Finally, :music-rockon: to "Reagan".

Sorry for not voting, no time during 2012 for 2012 (if this makes sense). But I'm happy to see the song by Bill Fay on the Top 50 (if I have voted it could have been even higher).

2012 AMF EOY Song Poll - Results: #40-36

Post by sonofsamiam »

OK, Top 40 time, coincidentally opening with an ultimate Top 40 song...

[40] Carly Rae Jepsen | Call Me Maybe

100.15 points | 4 voters | 25.04 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 7
Fans: acroayear (4); guigs2910 (5)

[39] Cat Power | Ruin

100.48 points | 6 voters | 16.75 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 40
Fan: SuperFurry (4)

[38] Hot Chip | Flutes

100.88 points | 4 voters | 25.22 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 52
Fan: Nassim (1)

[37] Twin Shadow | Five Seconds

101.03 points | 4 voters | 25.26 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 10
Fan: BleuPanda (5)

[36] Sleigh Bells | Comeback Kid

102.21 points | 5 voters | 20.44 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 74
Fan: Slick (2)

I thought "Call Me Maybe" might come in a touch higher, given the Pazz and Jop results and its general ubiquity, but 40 seems fine, too. Also, somewhat surprised that Twin Shadow landed so low. The rest seem appropriately enough placed.

I hear you -- with all the polls going on it is hard to pick and choose where to put one's emphasis. But yes, wonderful to see Bill Fay, in all his sincerity.

EDIT: Also, "Never Ending Happening" was one of those interesting placements where the power of 2 people could make a big difference...a #1 and a #2 placement got it in the Top 50.

OK, I'll get us to the Top 30 and step away to let more people see this, and since it might be a better time for folks a little later...

[35] First Aid Kit | The Lion's Roar

102.45 points | 4 voters | 25.61 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 552
Fans: Chambord (5); DaveC (10)

[34] Swans | A Piece of The Sky

107.92 points | 3 voters | 35.97 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 1061
Fans: sonofsamiam (1); Jackson (2)

[33] Miguel | Adorn

109.86 points | 6 voters | 18.31 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 12
Fans: OtisRedding (8); Dan (9)

[32] Alabama Shakes | Hold On

111.80 points | 4 voters | 27.95 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 26
Fans: acroayear (5); Nick (7); antonius (8)

[31] Jessie Ware | Running

113.64 points | 6 voters | 18.94 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 16
Fan: Henrik (12)

"The Lion's Roar" coming in so high was a pleasant surprise, several people really like that one. Speaking of which, I was glad Swans, and specifically "A Piece of the Sky", made the Top 40. That track has the highest average score of all songs in the Top 40, reflecting the love it/hate it attitude to Swans that we all know so well here.

I was a little surprised that "Adorn" landed so low relative to the critics; it really is quite great. "Hold On" and "Running" both landed in relatively predictable spots, I think...

Nice to see "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe" in the top 50, although I would have liked to see it a bit higher. At first I was rather lukewarm in my feelings towards the song. Now it's possibly my favorite song off of "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City", and a serious contender for my top 10 songs of the year. Funny how that works out.

Kendrick probably got impacted by vote-splitting more than anyone, except perhaps Swans. It seems like everyone has a different favorite from the album.

Some thoughts:

I love the 51-100 section; a lot of killer cuts like "Inspector Norse" (why so low?), "I Follow You", "N.E.W.", and "A Night and a Day" made it.

The back-to-back Godspeed tracks is so perfect. I had trouble initially deciding which one I preferred until "We Drift..." became the clear standout at the end of the year.

When I think about it, I really wouldn't have minded seeing "Call Me Maybe" higher, and maybe I underrated it on my own list. I think it's the most ubiquitous and widely loved pop song since "Crazy".

Why does everyone here love Frank Ocean so much more than Miguel? "Adorn" is a fantastic track that I would have expected to make the top 10 (and it finished behind Alabama Shakes???).

Nice that just two votes can get "A Piece of the Sky" a top 40 placement. Swans split a lot of votes in this poll.

Nice to see an AM special with "1904". Also good to see "Hey Jane".

"Climax" is a lot lower than with the critics, and M.I.A. too (though not as significantly). Still, those are respectable placements. Note that there is still not a whole lot of gap from placement to placement on here.

Wow, 15 of the top 40 was just by Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, and TV on the Radio. And I thought R.E.M. placing 5 of our top 15 for 1992 was bad...

Also, Duffy's "Mercy" is a pretty good song, but I'm shocked it finished second. I wonder what this poll would look like if taken today.

No big surprises indeed, though I expected Every Single Night and Bad Religion to make the top 20, even likely top 10.

#25, awesome result!

Great list so far, lots of songs I haven't listened to yet. I wish I would've remembered to vote for Bill Fay as well, definitely one of the best songs of the year.

The placement of "Swimming Pools (Drank)" behind "Angels" and "Under the Westway" is a really good representation of how vote-splitting can work. Nine songs from good kid got votes, and "Swimming Pools" accounted for 35% of Kendrick's total points. Meanwhile, "Angels" got 85% of The xx's points, and only one Blur song of course got votes. Speaking of which, "Under the Westway" is nice and all, but I'm surprised it has gotten THIS much support. People must really miss Blur.

Otherwise, I was very pleased by the placement of "Serpents", which continues to grow on me -- it's a fantastic track, nice and concise and full of seething rage. I was a little surprised that "Thinkin Bout You" was as low as 16 -- I think people sort of chose between that and "Bad Religion".

An interesting batch -- all except for "Laura" significantly outperformed the critics' list. I'm glad "Disparate Youth" got credit, considering it came from an uneven and generally unacclaimed album. It's a songs list, after all.

Also, amazing placement for "sever" -- completely ignored by the critics, it languished with very few votes in our poll until the last few days, at which point it rocketed up to nearly making the Top 10. A true AM special...

I hope no one minds, but time will be tight for me over the next few days, so I may have to rattle the rest of this off quickly. Here's 10-8

[10] ∆ | Breezeblocks

211.02 points | 9 voters | 23.45 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 41
Fans: antonius (1); Chambord (2); OtisRedding (4)

[09] Burial | Ashtray Wasp

Critics Rank: 20
Fans: BleuPanda (2); Charlie Driggs (2); OtisRedding (5); DaveC (6); Chilton (9)

"Ashtray Wasp" was actually Top 5 for a brief amount of time, but faded in the end. Still, a pretty solid spot for an 11-minute+ song that was not on a "proper" LP.

As for the others, "Breezeblocks" is jaunty enough but I'm still very surprised it made the Top 10. And 92% of Dirty Projectors' points went to "Gun Has No Trigger" -- is it just me, or is that song the white "Crazy"? (Assuming "Crazy" isn't the white "Crazy".)

So, I gotta say that #6 was something of a pleasant surprise...

[07] Tame Impala | Elephant

241.72 points | 10 voters | 24.17 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 19
Fans: Henrik (2); Craig (6); SuperFurry (7)

[06] Jessie Ware | Wildest Moments

If someone had told me that "Wildest Moments" would top everything by Tame Impala before the poll began, I would have thought they were nuts. But here it is, and it's pretty cool, 'cause it's a darn fine song. So is "Elephant", actually, which I'll admit to being pleased about coming ahead of "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards".

Japandroids actually didn't get a ton of votes relative to some other songs, but those that love 'em, LOVE 'em.

Great list, although I will probably never get Japandroids and Kendrick Lamar. I am so happy about "Sever"!

About "Disparate Youth", I included it in my list (near the bottom), although its' verse is VERY similar to Punkrocker / Hiphopper. Do you guys know these songs?

Teddybears STHLM - Punkrocker
Thomas Rusiak feat. Teddybears Sthlm - Hiphopper

Note that this is nearly 100 more points than #4 -- true consensus at the top of this year:

[03] Beach House | Myth

395.75 points | 13 voters | 30.44 pts per vote
Critics Rank: 3
Fans: Chambord (1); Craig (2); Stephan (2); Dan (3); guigs2910 (4); Nick (5); BleuPanda (6)

Even though Bloom was #3 in the album poll, "Myth" amassed nearly 80% of Beach House's song points. It looks like everyone here agrees that it is the highlight.

And if there was any doubt...

At the end, probably no big surprise here. "Pyramids" won it pretty handily.

All in all, I'm very happy with the final list. Nice job once again, AM.

I totally get Frank Ocean, but I totally don't get why people love the song Pyramids so much. For me Thinkin Bout You is by far the best song on the album, but there are also some other gems like Super Rich Kids which are also far better than Pyramids.

Pyramids is melodically and lyrically very dull, IMO.

To me "Super Rich Kids" is dull and "Pyramids" is the only moment of the entire album where I think, "yeah, I can see why this is the consensus #1 for the year." But I still would have preferred "Oblivion" winning this poll. As for the rest of the top 5, "The House that Heaven Built" is a good song that I probably should have voted for, but I always looked at what Japandroids did this year to be a tamed-down version of what Fucked Up did in 2011 with David Comes to Life. "Yet Again" is kind of boring ("Sleeping Ute" is the album highlight by far), and "Myth" is really boring.

The highlight of the entire poll is "Ashtray Wasp" cracking the top 10. I haven't seen it that high almost anywhere else (it was #1 on the atease forum's list), and I thought I might be one of the only voters backing it. Nice to see "Disparate Youth" do well too.

Great job compiling and hosting sonofsam, though the amount of Youtube embeds on this page seems like an attempt to intentionally crash my computer /

My apologies, I was worried about that and got carried away. I dumped a lot of the links out of the posts, hopefully load time is more tolerable now!

Tomorrow I'll post the whole list, and try to throw some stats together as well.

I think Alt-J and Django Django are the most overrated bands of 2012 (by the European critics at least, they seem to get less acclaim in the US) but kuddo for picking the 2 songs that annoy me the less.

I went to Laneway Festival in Brisbane last Friday and the show-stopping moment of the day was Bat for Lashes singing Laura, just stunning and haunting, man ! The Jessie Ware set was surprisingly fantastic too, she is so elegant when she sings (she isn't when she speaks with a thick scottish accent, with a "fuck" punctuating each of her sentences). Though my fav moment of the day was Wasted Days by Cloud Nothings.

I'm happy with Pyramids at #1, heck it's almost 2 of the best songs of the year in one single track ! I was quite pissed with the official video by the way, takes out my favorite half of the song.

69 | Pepe Deluxé | 72.40
70 | Neneh Cherry and The Thing | 69.87

"Pyramids" by itself would have been #4 on that list. The big shocker to me is iamamiwhoami edging out Kendrick Lamar.

I generally like the overall variety of artists on here. It seems like it was an especially good year for female artists and female-led groups. Half of the Top 10 and 8 of the Top 16 have women in lead roles, which is a really refreshing turn of events.

There are a lot of gems throughout this list. Not as unpredictable at the top as last year (who saw "Lonely Boy" and "The Glorious Land" taking top 2?), but really interesting top-to-bottom.

I just realized, with "White Winter Hymnal" as our choice for 2008, "Two Weeks" for 2009, "Runaway" for 2010, and "Lonely Boy" for 2011, this year is the first year where our choice for song of the year is the same as the critic's choice. Interesting.

I love "Pyramids" but my favourite songs from "Channel Orange" are "Sierra Leone"/"Sweet Life" that I tend to listen on repeat as an only song (and were not on our Top 100). Conveniently placed on the first half of the album (tracks #4 and #5) I see them as Ocean's hommage to some of his music heroes from the past (but with a sound absolutely contemporary). I see Sierra Leone (by the way, good amateur video) as an hommage to Marvin Gaye, particularly Ocean's use of spoken and sung verses and the arrangements with synths sounding like strings and xylophones from 1'38" reminds me of Save the Children (but of course on "What's Going On" the strings and xylophones were real). And Sweet Life reminds of course of Stevie Wonder, not only for the vocals but also for those dreamy synths from 1'08" that seem culled from Superwoman.
