Too weird for me, but I'm inclined to think that it is ahead of it's time and that I'm not ready for it yet.

It's interesting that Dirty Computer is #1 but isn't #1 in any of the three regions.

TBH, I'm really hoping Be the Cowboy eventually overtakes DC. I love Janelle Monae's first two albums, but I really don't care for Dirty Computer. Musically, it seems a little more generic to me than its predecessors and lyrically it just doesn't feel very nuanced (which might matter more so to me than others). I don't necessarily mind the message and I think political statements can be very important but the delivery feels a lot more like American Idiot (which I also don't care for) than say, A Seat at the Table (which I love). I know there a lot of fans of the album on the forum so obviously this is just my opinion, but this may end up being the first year I don't like the most acclaimed album enough to put it in my top 50 for the year.

We'll agree to disagree there. Dirty Computer Is extremely radical politically If you pay close attention to the lyrics. She's describing what It's like to be a minority In America In this very impressionistic way that's laced with realism, and musically It's extremely strong and tight-knit. Be The Cowboy was my favorite album of 2018 however, and I'd love to see It finishing at #1 on the spreadsheet also.

I'm not sure if I've ever heard an album which describes what it's like to be a minority in america before.

I was saying that how she describes being a minority was something new, In the context of government and sexual politics as well, especially In this particular era of America. Also by the way, the sarcasm wasn't really necessary.

This is what every big music press is writing in their year end lists, claiming that these are “terrible times”. Well, I’m not American, so maybe it’s all ignorance of mine, but I’d like to know if has any law which impose segregation against African-American, or homossexual people, been enacted these last years. Has your government legally stimulated you Americans to kill, discriminate, or to be violent to each other? Have your lives really become so worse this decade?

I ask for these reflections because I’ve got the impression that every form or art (or any other form of self expression) has gone to the same clichés repeatedly. It seems like artists don’t feel encouraged to think for themselves, so they only repeat the same ideas of everyone. I believe this can be a reason for music becoming less interesting these last 2-3 years.

These are fascinating questions, of course. But the EOY 2018 Albums Spreadsheet Update thread is NOT the place to discuss them. Do not derail this thread with political discussions, please. By all means, create a thread in another forum to continue this conversation. But not here. Thank you!

I'm not trying to turn this forum political, and I agree with everything Harold said above. But the last few years have seen America witnessing boiling political and sexual tension the last few years.

Take In for example massive police brutality against African Americans and the rise of Black Lives Matter, the sexual assault allegations against many celebrities and people of power (our own president bragged about "grabbing women by the pussy", the separation of children from their families on the Mexican-American border, the events at Williamsburg In 2017, and a growing belief that those who choose to speak their mind should keep their mouth shut, exemplified by the rise of nationalism and white supremacy, especially on social media. I've witnessed this tension that has been growing throughout the 2010s, and the country Is at It's most divided since Vietnam. I live In Washington D.C., and everyday myself and others sense the feeling that America has become a melting pot that's popping up over and over again.

With that saying, the troubled times In America has produced an explosion of musical art which has been expressed through music, tackling the times that we live In, and the powers and desires that cause this issue. I strongly disagree that a lot of these albums which are speaking on these matters are repetitive however, because a lot of these albums have their own political worldview and are unique In their own way. For examples, how are albums such as To Pimp A Butterfly, Lemonade, or american dream products of the same cliches when they're all heavily different musically and lyrically? I get your points, but I feel like you don't understand the pain that many minorities are going through right now In this country, whether It's because of the color of your skin, your sexual orientation, or where you were born.

I'm making my argument about music, not politics. But music and politics have been inseparable ever since music was even created, and politics have produced some of the most important and influential music of all time. It doesn't matter where your position on these issues stand, but It's simply fact that that this divide has produced some of the decade's best music, with a lot of artists tackling It In their own way, and succeeding on their own merits regardless.

Sorry. Not trying to be flip, and I am in agreement with almost all of what you wrote. I just wanted to note a level of irony that could have actually caused that Alanis Morissette song to make sense, had she included it.

Love this site, long-time reader, first time poster. I just needed to register my thoughts that the poster above wrote a respectful and insightful post about the state of music in 2018. Stifling respectful discussion that is explicitly about music not politics (though as noted the two have always been interlinked) in a thread about music in 2018 seems pretty absurd. For my part, I thought it was the most interesting post made in this thread. Imagine if this site had existed in the 60s and you tried to ban all talk of artistic motivation because it was political. Ridiculous. Please do not stifle discussion about music in 2018 in a thread about music in 2018.

Point taken respectfully. I do object to the idea that I'm trying to "stifle discussion" or "ban" anything. Nothing of the kind. It's simply that this particular thread is dedicated to updating a spreadsheet, and we have seen in this very forum on a few occasions - even before the charged atmosphere of the last two years - how quickly "respectful discussion" can simultaneously escalate and devolve to the point where Henrik has had to step in and lock a thread, and I would just prefer that it not happen to this one. By all means, please have as wide-ranging a conversation as possible about music and politics in 2018. It is vital and important. But let's keep it as civil as this forum, by and large, has always thankfully been since its inception.

That was certainly what jumped out to me as well as I was adding these latest lists. Frankly, it should be top ten as far as I'm concerned.

It's not really an entertainment magazine - more of a fashion-and-culture publication. In any case, I'm not really planning to add any new sources to the spreadsheet this year unless they have a songs list that Henrik adds to his spreadsheet as well. I just don't have the time.

IDK, songs like "Screwed" feels like the opposite of impressionistic to me. I love the other albums you mentioned in up above (TPAB, Lemonade, American Dream), I just don't think this album is in the same league as those. Obviously you're not alone in feeling that it is in the same league so maybe I'll eventually come around to it; I don't mind being an outlier in the meantime.

I feel like Sweetener will fall drastically once end of decade rolls around and Ariana Grande is no longer in the news every five minutes. Also adore the fact that Mitski is at number two, but it feels bizarre to me that Be the Cowboy can do so well and Bury Me at Makeout Creek isn't even bubbling under. That one for sure will also get fixed when the end of decade comes around.

I wonder what other overlooked records will get a notable boost with End of Decade lists; IDLES is another hopeful example now that Joy as An Act of Resistance is breaking the top 10. Brutalism was also a phenomenal record.

Do we see this often with critics? As in, artists with great but relatively unknown early records getting reconsidered once a later album finally takes off? Or are those early works likely doomed as far as Acclaimed Music goes?

J Balvin - Vibras is pretty good, been listening to it the last few days. I don't understand Spanish but it's still a good listen.

I don't want to derail from the topic too much, but I really don't feel like many 2018 albums are going to perform very well at the end of the decade polls. It just doesn't seem like there were very strong albums compared to other years. One album that I could see getting a big boost is "Golden Hour" though, since it could very easily be considered the best country album of the entire decade.

You are probably right. Even our likely #1 album, Dirty Computer, is certainly going to suffer in the EOD polls from having to compete with The ArchAndroid.

That says a lot about this year’s music, since “The Archandroid” is just #7 of its year.
Anyway, I expect it to jump to #3 of 2010 once the decade ends.

The 2018 releases I'd imagine will fare well in end of decade lists would probably be:

Golden Hour, as Future Critic said
Double Negative
Wide Awake!
In a Poem Unlimited
Lush
El Mal Querer
A Brief Inquiry into Modern Relationships
Hope Downs
Kids See Ghosts
Some Rap Songs
Historian
Ordinary Corrupt Human Love

and this is not to say that these will be the only highest ranked, I'd imagine most of the top 10 (other than Sweetener) will likely do reasonably well. I just see these albums as aging well over time.

Many thanks Harold! That's a crazy amount of new album lists that were added to the forum in the last couple of days. And you added them all. Well, almost... Take care so you won't get the CrazyMind.

To be honest, I really dig this top 10 right now. This feels like a really transitory year in music, something like a 1990. There is such a variety here, from post-punk to country to post-industrial to lounge rock.

Sometimes, I think we focus too much on the absolute top spot on these things. This probably is going to be the weakest #1 of the 2010s, but there's so much innovation here that simply doesn't happen to be everyone's cup of tea. I just don't think it's fair to say "2018 is a weak year because its top album isn't as good as the best album by its artist which is only #7 of its year." It just happens to be a unifying work in a year where all the other great works live in rather specific niches. The albums by Low and IDLES are absolutely stunning, and I think we would view it a bit differently if either actually managed to take #1. I think 2018 is a year that will take a very different shape over time, as I believe the people with interest in those niches are much more likely to include works like SOPHIE or Kacey Musgraves in all-time lists than fans of Dirty Computer.

And, just as much as I want to celebrate women dominating the top 10, we're also seeing a lot of artists making their top 10 debut. I remember the conversation last year was dominated by the same old artists battling for the top spot with supposedly lesser albums; who the hell would have predicted bands like Low and IDLES dominating lists a year later? It should be a breath of fresh air.

@Bleu The Sons of Kemet album has been a great end of year find for me as well.
Swans The Seer and To Be Kind were top 10 in their years, not sure Sophie has anything in the weirdness department on those two.

Harold wrote:Even our likely #1 album, Dirty Computer, is certainly going to suffer in the EOD polls from having to compete with The ArchAndroid.
That says a lot about this year’s music, since “The Archandroid” is just #7 of its year.
Anyway, I expect it to jump to #3 of 2010 once the decade ends.
True, but the ArchAndroind comparison isn't entirely fair as 2010 is arguably the most top heavy album year of the decade - MBDTF, This is Happening, Archandroid, High Violet,Teen Dream, Body Talk, Halcyon Digest, The Suburbs, and presently lower ranked sleepers I expect to jump big time in the EOD polls like The Monitor - these are all going to be major players for very high EOD rankings. Each of the other year's produced one to four titles that would probably take the top spot over anything released in 2018, but that's about it.

To those championing how well women are doing this year, I agree, congratulations are definitely in order and many of these female works were excellent and it's an awesome development I'm all for, but I also think we're being dishonest with ourselves if we don't acknowledge there's a definite #metoo era coattails thing happening right now that's skewing this year's results from a qualitative perspective a bit. The same way Channel Orange hit right when the gay marriage initiative was at it's cultural peak a half decade back. Granted after 50 plus years of things tilting the male-dominated way, turnabout is definitely fair play, but it is also blinding us a touch to what I think was really 2018's top music story, which is what a great year it was for contemporary male punk.

Hadn't been planning on it. As has been noted several times, I'm not adding any new lists (except for the ones Henrik adds to the Songs spreadsheet). This is enough work as it is.

Re: EOY 2018 Albums Spreadsheet Updates

Post by Harold »

It says something about the diversity of opinion about this year's albums that, for the first time since I've been maintaining the EOY spreadsheet (and I've been doing it since 2010), the overall #1 album will not be #1 for any of the three subcategories (USA/Canada, UK/Ireland, Rest of the World). In fact, Dirty Computer currently isn't in the top three for any of them - it's #4, across the board. Compare that to the last two years, when both Blackstar and DAMN. ran the table and swept the top spot in all three listings.

The current USA #1 album is Golden Hour, surprisingly enough (finishing at #1 in the Uproxx aggregate poll didn't hurt). Strikingly, Joy as an Act of Resistance is #1 for the other two categories - if it had done just a little bit better with U.S. critics (truthfully, I have absolutely no idea why it didn't), it would be sitting on top right now. As it is, it's below both Dirty Computer and Double Negative - the latter of which is the only other album to make all three top 10 lists. I continue to be both impressed and shocked by how well it's performing.
