Song #98 was "Here Comes The Night" from the "Wild Honey" album in late 1967. Brian sings the lead vocal and the songwriting is credited to Brian and Mike. In 1979 the band redid the song on the L.A. (Light Album) with Carl on the lead vocal. It was a disco sound and even featured a remixed long-assed disco version that was released on a 12 inch. Here's the 1979 version:

Next up is song #97. Like #98, it is from 1967, but this time it's from the "Smiley Smile" album. It's the first of 5 songs from that album that are in the top 100:

Song # 97 is "With Me Tonight" from the "Smiley Smile" album in 1967. The song has been characterized as "Psychedelic Doo Wop. One of Brian's vocal instructions to the group was to sing the song while smiling. Brian wrote the song and Carl sings lead. It was recorded in Brian's home studio.

Next up is the #96 song. It's by far the most recent track on the countdown, coming from the "That's Why God Made The Radio" album in 2012.

The #96 song was "Summer's Gone" from 2012. The earliest song on this list is from 1961, so that means that the top 100 spans 52 years for the band. It came from the album "That's Why God Made The Radio," which at that time was their first album of original material in 20 years. It was also the first album that original member David L. Marks was on since 1963.

The track "Summer's Gone" was originally meant to be the final song on the final Beach Boys album, and the album's original title was Summer's Gone with the intention that it would be the final Beach Boys album. It was changed when Brian decided he would like to record a follow-up. The song was written in reflection of his mother's death and the end of Carl's life, who died two months after their mother.

The album debuted on Billboard at No. 3 and became the group's highest charting album in 37 years—since 1974's compilation Endless Summer and highest charting studio album since 1965's "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)." It also became the band's first top 10 studio album since 1976's "15 Big Ones" and the highest debuting album of their entire career. The album made its debut in the UK charts at number 15 giving the group their highest studio album debut since 1971's Surf's Up. The album debuted at number 15 on the Canadian Albums Chart.

The #95 song was "Country Air" from the "Wild Honey" album in 1967. That album was supposed to be the Band's answer to soul music, and included their version of "I Was Made To Love Her," the Stevie Wonder hit. Don't worry, that one DID NOT make the list, although I know at least one schlub who claims that the Beach Boys version is better than Stevie's version.

Next up is the #94 song. It's the first of 4 tracks on the countdown from the 1973 album "Holland."

The #94 song is "California Saga (Big Sur)" from the "Holland" album in 1973. It was part of a 3 song medley, a trilogy I guess, of different "California Saga" parts. This part was written by Mike Love, and he sings the lead vocal. The album was supposed to have been recorded in France, but somehow instead it was done in Holland, hence the album title.

094 - California Saga (Big Sur) ---------------2--------85

The #93 song was "Our Sweet Love" from the "Sunflower" album. Carl sang the lead vocal and also played the guitar solo which is reminiscent of some of George Harrison's solos with the Beatles. The songwriting credit went to Brain, Carl and Al on this one.

RANK - SONG TITLE -------- TOTAL BALLOTS - POINTS

Next we have song #92. The song "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" was written by Bobby Troup and it was recorded by several acts including the Four Freshmen, who were the biggest influence on the vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys. Mike Love rewrote the lyrics of the song and also changed the title and the Beach Boys recorded it. I believe that it's the only song on the countdown that is a capella.

The #92 song was "A Young Man Is Gone" from 1963. So far it's the oldest record to show up on the countdown. It's from the "Little Deuce Coupe" album, which is a weird album in that the title track was already on the prior album that was released, "Surfer Girl." There are 10 more songs to come from 1963. For those who care about lyrics, "A Young Man Is Gone" is a tribute to James Dean.

We just heard the #91 song on the list, "We'll Run Away," from the "All Summer Long" album in 1964. There are 6 more songs still to come from that classic LP. The song was written by Brian and Gary Usher, and is done in 12/8 time. For the lyrics crowd, it's about a certain type of teen angst that would culminate more fully in "Wouldn't It Be Nice."

RANK - SONG TITLE -------- TOTAL BALLOTS - POINTS

Okay, we move on now to song #90. We're gonna go to 1977 for the only song on the countdown from the "Love You" album.

The # 90 song was "The Night Was So Young" from the "Love You" album in 1977. Carl sings the lead on this one with Brian. The album cover was designed by Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean. The album is considered to be a proto synth pop experiment by Brian. The experiment did not turn out that well apparently as this was the only track from the album to make our Top 100 list.

Song # 89 was "Cool Cool Water" from the "Sunflower" album in 1970. The song was written by Brian and Mike. Brian first wrote the music for the song in March 1967 when he moved into his new house in Belair. The song was first recorded in 1967 but did not make the cut for either the "Smiley Smile" or the "Wild Honey" album and was discarded. Three years later, Lenny Waronker, then an A&R executive at Warner Music, heard the unfinished tape, and convinced Brian Wilson to finish the track for Sunflower. With new lyrics from Mike Love, the song was recorded for "Sunflower" and even came out in an edited version as the A side of a single. Brian and Mike shared the lead vocal duties.

Song #88 was "Hushabye" from 1964 on the "All Summer Long" album. The song was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman and was a top 20 hit for the Mystics in 1959. Once again Brian and Mike sing the lead vocal.

Up now at #87 is a song that I would never have been able to identify as by the Beach Boys. It sounds nothing like their usual style, with acoustic instruments and no vocal harmony. Al wrote the song with a partner and he sings the vocal.

Song #86 was "Let Him Run Wild" from 1965. It's the first of 6 songs on the list from the "Summer Days (And Summer Nights)" album. It was also on the flip side of "California Girls" as a single. The song foreshadows the complicated production that was to come on "Pet Sounds." The song was written by Brian and Mike with Brian singing the lead vocal. Brian later reflected that his vocal on the track was too shrill, saying, "I sounded like a little girl," and "I sounded like a fairy," naming it his least favorite Beach Boys recording.

I guess I was wrong about there only being one a capella record on the list as #84 was also a capella. It was "Our Prayer" from the 20/20 album in 1969. No words, just harmonizing for a minute and 10 seconds. The song was originally intended as the opening track of the "Smile" album, which of course got shelved.

In 1969 Brian said of the track...I was sitting at my piano thinkin' about holy music. I poked around for some simple but moving chords. Later I sat down and wrote 'Our Prayer' in sections. The boys were overtaken by the arrangement. I taught it to them in sections, the way I usually do. The purity of the blending of the voices made the listeners feel spiritual. I was definitely into rock church music.

The Beach Boys never performed the song live until their 50th anniversary reunion tour; at the June 24, 2012 show, "Our Prayer" was performed as an intro to "Heroes and Villains."

Yes, when I like an artist I like to see what lesser known songs that others really like and explore deeper into the act's catalog. Plus learn other facts about the act along the way. And the Beach Boys are a perfect act to do this with as they had many different styles over the course of 50+ years of releases.

Song #83 was "Don't Go Near The Water" from the "Surf's Up" album in 1971. This album was not all that popular with the general public, but is a big favorite of hard core fans. It did very well here too, with 7 songs from the album making our top 100. It only got to #29 on the Billboard Album Chart, in a 17 week run.

This song was unique in that it was written by Al and Mike, which is not a songwriting combination that occurred all that often. The two of them sing the lead vocals. As I mentioned in the prior post, it was a foray into politics. The Beach Boys had hired Jack Rieley as their manager in 1970. In order to make the band more relevant, Rieley suggested that the band write songs that were more political. "Don't Go Near the Water" is the first example of this. The song puts an ironic, ecological spin on the traditional Beach Boys beach and surf based songs: instead of enjoying surfing and other fun activities, this time the listener is advised to avoid the water for environmental reasons.

The song was chosen to be the B-side of the "Surf's Up" single, released on November 8, 1971. It did not chart. Featured as an A-side in New Zealand, it peaked at #21 there.

Song #82 is "All This Is That" from the "Carl And The Passions - So Tough" album in 1972. When this album was first released it came as a two for one set with a reissue of "Pet Sounds." The set only got to #50 on the Billboard album chart. The song was written by Mike, Al and Carl. Brian had minimal involvement with this album as he was busy producing another band's (American Spring) debut album.

Song #81 was "Hawaii" from the "Surfer Girl" album in 1963. That one was on my list. If you like the Beach Boys early hits, you'll probably like the album track. There are still 9 tracks from 1963 still to come, with 4 of them from this album. It was written by Brian and Mike, and it was released as a single in Australia, where it was top 10.

At #80 we heard "Vegetables" from the "Smiley Smile" album in 1967. There are 3 more tracks still to come from that album. The song was written by Brian and Van Dyke Parks. You'd never know it to look at him, but for a while in the late 60s Brian was obsessed with physical fitness, which inspired the song. Also, the use of marijuana may have been an inspiration for the song too, as the guys sometimes referred to each other as "vegetables" when they were high. Brian and Al sang the lead vocal on this one.

Song #77 is "Add Some Music To Your Day" from the "Sunflower" album in 1970. It made the Billboard Singles chart, peaking at #64. It was a top 30 hits in several markets, and got to #39 on Record World. The song was written by Brian, Mike and Joe Knott. Knott was not a songwriter, but rather a friend of Brian's who contributed a couple of lines to the lyrics. The lead vocal is shared by all of the members who each sing different lines.

Song #76 was "Do You Like Worms" from the "Smile Sessions" album in 2011. It was first recorded in 1966 and first issued on a box set "Good Vibrations" Thirty Years of the Beach Boys" in 1993. Written by Brian and Van Dyke Parks and Brian sings the lead vocal. The song was imagined as a lyrical journey across the United States from coast to coast; relating mostly to Manifest Destiny and westward expansion. According to Parks, "It's about bringing this Euro-sensibility into the taming of the American continent, from Plymouth Rock to Waikiki." It is seen through the eyes of a protagonist named the "Bicycle Rider".

Song #75 is "Pet Sounds" from the album of the same name in 1966. Over the years it's become by far the best known Beach Boys album. About half of the ballots for this project came from the forum of a site called Acclaimedmusic.net which ranks albums and songs based on where they rank on thousands of critics lists, and "Pet Sounds" is the most critically acclaimed album of all time on the site. Believe it or not all 13 songs from "Pet Sounds" are in the top 75 on this countdown, including this title track which to me is just a nothing instrumental. By the way, supposedly the title "Pet Sounds" is a tip of the hat to Phil Spector, with the PS initials. We'll have a lot more to say about this legendary album as we move along in the countdown.

The #73 song was "Little Bird" from the "Friends" album in 1968. The song was written by Dennis and Stephen Kalinich with uncredited contributions from Brian. Brian once said; "Dennis gave us 'Little Bird' which blew my mind because it was so full of spiritualness. He was a late bloomer as a music maker. He lived hard and rough but his music was as sensitive as anyone's." The "Friends" album was supposed to be mellow and spiritual without worrying about radio play. As it turned out it was pretty much a commercial and critical failure. This is the only song from the album to make our top 100.

The #70 song was "Then I Kissed Her" from the "Summer Days (And Summer Nights)" album in 1965. It is of course a remake of the Crystals 1963 hit "Then He Kissed Me" that is sung from the boy's perspective of what took place. Al sings the lead vocal. Against the band's wishes this song was released as a single in 1967 in some European countries, and was a top 10 hit in a few of them, including the UK where it got to #4 on the singles chart.

Song #69 is "The Trader" from the "Holland" album in 1973. Just one more song left from that year and it's also from that album. The song was written by Carl and Jack Rieley, who was a former DJ who was the group's manager at this time. Elvis Costello named the "Holland" album as olne of his all time favorites, and the late Tom Petty described the album as 'beautiful' and said of Carl Wilson's track "The Trader": 'Carl's vocal on The Trader is, well, something of a miracle. The Trader may be the best piece of work ever by a man who did many, many great vocals. The song is the centerpiece to Holland and all these years later still leaves me with my mouth hung open when I hear it."

Song #66 was "Still Cruisin" from the album of the same name in 1989. The song was featured in the movie "Lethal Weapon 2" and got to #11 in Austria but barely cracked the top 100 in the USA. The song was written by Mike Love and Terry Melcher, and Brian was not involved with the group at this time. Carl, Mike, Al and Bruce all sang on the track.

The #64 song was "Good Timin'" from the "L.A. (Light Album)" in 1979, The song was originally recorded back in 1974. It was going to be on "15 Big Ones" but was not for some reason. When the band was getting negative publicity for the disco version of "Here Comes The Night" they rushed out "Good Timin'" as a single months before the album was released. The song was written by Brian and Carl, and Carl sings the lead vocal.

The #62 song was "Rock And Roll Music" from the "15 Big Ones" album in 1976. It brought the group back to the top 10. I've heard many people say that they think their version of this Chuck Berry classic is shit, but I think it's good. It's not Chuck, or even the Beatles, but it's a perfectly fine update on the song with the Beach Boys famous harmonies applied.

There are still 4 more songs to come from "Today." This was another Brian Wilson-Mike Love composition, and Brian sings the lead vocal.

Moving along to song #60 now, it's the first song to accumulate 200 or more points in the balloting. This one was not on an original album, being released only as a single until it made the "Spirit of America" collection in 1975. It came in at #19 on my list.

Here is #60:

Song #60 was "Break Away" from 1969. There are two more songs still to come from 1969. Brian wrote this song with his father Murry, who was credited under the name Reggie Dunbar on the label. The single stalled at #63 in America, but was a much bigger hit in other countries, reaching #6 in the UK. Murry came up with the idea when watching "The Joey Bishop Show" and hearing them say that they were gonna "Break away for a commercial."

Re: Best Beach Boys Songs - RESULTS!

Song #59 was "Surfin" which was the Beach Boys first record. It was first released in November 1961. Written by Mike and Brian. I spelled th title without an apostrophe after the n because that's how it was spelled on the label of the record. I always thought that it came out fiorst on X and then on Candix, but it seems that the first Candix pressing is the original based on the story below.

Image

There's a cool story involved which I will get into now with some of the Wikipedia article about the song. It was released as the first Beach Boys single (with "Luau" on the B-side) in November 1961 on Candix Records and it later appeared on the 1962 album Surfin' Safari.

The single effectively began the Beach Boys' music career, establishing them at the vanguard of what would later be regarded the "California Sound". Initially, the group were trying to think of something original and creative that they could write a song about. Brian Wilson remembers that "One day, my brother Dennis came home from the beach and said, 'Hey, surfing's getting really big. You guys ought to write a song about it."

The song features Mike Love on lead vocals with Carl Wilson on backing vocals and acoustic guitar, Al Jardine on backing vocals and stand-up bass, Brian Wilson on backing vocals and snare drum and Dennis Wilson on backing vocals. The single peaked at number 75 in the US; it was never released in the UK.

Brian Wilson remembers that "I began noodling around the piano singing 'surfin', surfin', surfin''. It sounded stupid. But then Mike [Love] sang 'ba-ba-dippity-dippity-ba-ba.' He was fooling around, trying to spark a new idea with the same bass sounds he'd sung countless times before. For some reason, though, this time when he sang I pounded out a few chords to accompany him and then he took up the chant I'd been singing, 'surfin', surfin''." Brian continues that "twenty seconds later, I had the opening for the song that would become the Beach Boys' first hit single. A couple of hours later, I finished the song and called it 'Surfin''." The'ba-ba-dippity-dippity-ba-ba' were influenced by the early Jan and Dean records (like "Baby Talk") Brian also incorporated a riff from "Underwater", a nationally charting single by The Frogmen (also on Candix).

While a student at Hawthorne High School in 1960, Brian Wilson submitted "Surfin'" as an assignment in a music class and received an "F" from his teacher, Fred Morgan. In 2018, the school changed the grade to an "A."

Brian Wilson recalls that "the five of us arrived at the Morgans' Melrose Avenue office." The group sang a cover version of "Sloop John B", though Hite Morgan's response was "these days you need something original. You've gotta have an angle. The music business is all about selling a product." Brian remembers that "there was a long, awkward moment of silence that caught us looking at our shoelaces." Dennis Wilson then surprised the other group members by responding, "Yeah, we got an original. It's called 'Surfin''." Hite Morgan then asked them to play the song but as Brian recalls he responded, "Well, it's not finished. We've got the song, and it's original. But it's not done yet."

When it came time to record their new song, the group (then calling themselves The Pendletones) went back to the Morgans' studio for a second time. Audree Wilson remembers that Brian, Mike, Carl and Al were at the Morgans' studio recording a demo when they said, "We want to play this for you." So they played the demo of "Surfin'" to Dorinda Morgan and Hite Morgan of Hite Morgan's Recording Studio. Dorinda Morgan was excited by the demo as Audree recalls "Immediately, she said, 'Drop everything, we want to record that.' He [Hite] wasn't so much in favour of it, but she heard something she thought would click."

Brian remembers that "we were at the Morgans' all day; twelve takes of 'Surfin''...tried everyone's patience. I was to blame. I wanted the song to sound perfect." Brian remembers that they "did it all live. Our mix wasn't as good [as today's mix], it wasn't as balanced. You couldn't hear the guitar playing...you didn't hear the bass notes as well...some of the vocals were a little buried. It wasn't mixed and balanced very well. And my father was critical of the first thing we did, he said, 'Well, look, you don't hear the guitar, you don't hear this, what is going on here? Listen, I'm going to have to take over as producer', which he did. He took over as producer."

Brian recalls that "Hite [Morgan] announced that he was going to turn our demo into a record, press up a small quantity, and see how it did on local radio." When the group unpacked the first box of singles from Candix, they found that their band name had been changed from "The Pendletones" to "The Beach Boys". Label promotion man Russ Regan explained to Murry Wilson that he had taken the liberty of giving the group a new name to associate them more directly with the popular surf-music genre.

Dennis Wilson remembers "the first time we ever heard our record played [on the radio], We [Carl, Brian, Dennis and David Marks] were all on Hawthorne Boulevard in Brian's 1957 Ford...they said, 'Here's a group from Hawthorne, California; the Beach Boys, with their song, 'Surfin''. It was a contest; they played three songs and the one that got the most requests over the phone was the one they would add to the playlist. We were screamin' in the street, and knockin' on everybody's door, 'We got a record on the radio!'...That was the biggest high ever.

Nothing will ever top the expression on Brian's face. Ever...THAT is the all-time moment."

Dennis remembers that they "got so excited hearing our record on the radio that Carl threw up". Brian recalls that he "ran down the street screaming". Russ Regan, the man who gave the Beach Boys their name, remembers that "Surfin'" "actually exploded here in the city of Los Angeles. Their record was a big record here. It was just a natural Southern California record." By the final weeks of 1961 "Surfin'" had sold more than 40,000 copies. Over the following months (until pressed copies ran out in mid-spring 1962) the raw but radical new sound of the Beach Boys entered the top five in San Diego, San Bernardino, Mojave and crossing the California border into Arizona at Yuma; was seen in the lower reaches of playlists in San Francisco (KYA) and Seattle (KAYO); and appeared in the Northeast, peaking at #21 at Boston's WHIL for two weeks in late March and April.

Confusingly, "Surfin'" was seemingly released three times in three months on (apparently) two different labels: Candix 331 in November 1961, X 301 in December and Candix 301 in January 1962. The full story is complex and still imperfectly understood, but in simple form, when the owners of Candix went back to the pressing plant to order more of 331, they were told to settle their bills first, so in order to maintain a flow of singles they had another plant press the record, hence the X 301 release (which is far and away the rarest of all). When sufficient cash had been raised for a further repressing on Candix, the number 301 was retained, possibly for the sake of continuity, possibly as a slip of the pen.

Song #58 was "Let's Go Away For Awhile," another instrumental from the "Pet Sounds" album. Despite how big that album is, I don't get this innocuous instrumental finishing this high. The song was also issued on the flip side of "Good Vibrations" as a single. The track was composed and produced by Brian Wilson and was originally titled "The Old Man and The Baby." Brian had a Burt Bacharach sound in mind when he wrote the song. None of the members of the Beach Boys played on the record.

Song #57 is "I Know There's An Answer" from the "Pet Sounds" album. If you know what "Dog Ears" means then you are a big Beach Boys fan. Around the time when "Pet Sounds" was being recorded Mike started referring to Brian as "Dog Ears." This is because Brian was always hearing something wrong with a playback that none of the other guys in the group could hear. Brian was always a perfectionist when it came to making a record, but became even more so with the "Pet Sounds" project, and then with "Good Vibrations." Brian wrote the song with lyrical help from Mike and the group's road manager Terry Sachen. It is characterized by its unusual juxtaposition of instrumentation which unfolds as the song progresses, which include tack piano, bass harmonica, banjos, saxophones, flutes, and organ. Glen Campbell plays the banjo on the track.

Love was not originally listed as co-writer, and only received his credit after a 1990s court case. During the song's recording sessions, conflicts arose between Brian and Mike. Love thought it was "too much of a doper song" and suggested that it should instead be about "finding yourself". After careful consideration, Wilson allowed Love to revise some of the song's lyrics, renaming it from "Hang On to Your Ego" to "I Know There's an Answer". The song's references to LSD were ultimately kept in its lyrics.

Song #56 is "Little Girl I Once Knew" from 1965. It did not appear on an album until "Best of the Beach Boys - Vol. 3" in 1968. The story is that it only got to #20 on the Billboard singles chart because many stations did not like to play it because there are several spots in the record where there is dead air for a couple of seconds. AllMusic called the song "a virtual link between the slightly progressive work on songs such as 'California Girls' and the then-quantum leap taken by Wilson on Pet Sounds and 'Good Vibrations'"

John Lennon raved about the record, saying "This is the greatest! Turn it up, turn it right up. It's GOT to be a hit. It's the greatest record I've heard for weeks. It's fantastic. I hope it will be a hit. It's all Brian Wilson. He just uses the voices as instruments. He never tours or anything. He just sits at home thinking up fantastic arrangements out of his head. Doesn't even read music. You keep waiting for the fabulous breaks. Great arrangement. It goes on and on with all different things. I hope it's a hit so I can hear it all the time."

At #55 we heard "Be True To Your School" from the "Little Deuce Coupe" album in 1963. It reached #6 on the U.S. singles chart, flipped with "In My Room" which has not shown up yet. The link featured the single version of the song which includes the Honeys as the cheerleaders. The album version just had the Beach Boys singing without the Honeys. The song features the melody of the University of Wisconsin's fight song, "On, Wisconsin!", although it is a tribute to Hawthorne High School, which the Wilson brothers attended. Hawthorne High School's fight song uses the same melody as "On Wisconsin". The members of the Honeys were Marilyn Wilson, Diane Rovell, and Ginger Blake. David L. Marks was on this record. That's him on the bottom middle below. Al was not in the picture:
