Now the first song not in English, though the artists are actually native English speakers:
5. Sun City Girl – The Shining Path
Year: 1990
From the album: Torch of the Mystics
Biggest Fan: Jackson (#860)

Man, now we're talking:
Sun City Girls - The Shining Path 8
An 8, but it might get higher. After the first listen I fell in love and I heard it six times today, including once on the complete, loony album. I recognized the tune, which comes from a Bolivian folk song called "Llorando se fue" (and a great tune that is; it formed the basis of the hit Lambada from Kaoma), but these guys made it into something else. It starts with a Morricone-like whistle and continues with shrill vocals and a ramshackle instrumentation that is strangely endearing. You got to have a love for glorious messes and intentional imperfections, but if you do you will find something special here. A very likely addition to future song lists for me.

5. Sun City Girl – The Shining Path
But...but..but... it's the fucking lambada...noooooo... the song that traumatized an entire generation
Sorry, I can't detach myself from this lambada horror by listening to this version, even the original of 81, I couldn't listen to it without thinking about this thing. No luck for this song but it's as if I had been given a remake of the Macarena made in 2015.
Sorry... so sorry 3/10

6. Middle Kids – Edge of Town
Year: 2017
From the EP: Middle Kids
Biggest Fan: StevieFan13 (#903)
Note: This song first appeared on the 2017 self-titled EP, but also a year later on the group’s debut album. Both versions have a different length, so there is a difference. The album version however is much more popular on Spotify, so I added that one to the playlist. If StevieFan13 prefers the EP one I’ll swap them.
Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

The album version is the one I know and the one I meant. I adore every second of this song and it’d be in my top 500 if I revised my list.
Score-wise, it’s a 10 from me.

Sun City Girls = The Shining Path = 5 (Average). As Romain, I have been marked for life by the Lambada. This is a rather nice, original take, but can't steer enough away from the original.
Middle Kids = Edge of Town = 7 (Good). A discovery for me, nice voice, nice crescendo, good indie rock which I am going to look into a bit more...
(Sandy) Alex G = Proud = 8 (Very Good). Lovely tune, his album was certainly one of the highlights of 2017. This song reminds me of Badly Drawn Boy which can't be a bad thin
J.J Cale = Magnolia = 4 (Mediocre) = not a bad song, fits into a smooth, downtempo atmosphere, but just that : background music.
Elton John = Your Sister Can't Twist = 6 (OK) . I am NOT a big fan of Elton, but this is kinda nice. Uptempo, started like Elvis Costello before going into full rock'n'roll mode. I could listen to this again...
Muddy Waters - Good News = 5 (Average) : Difficult to rate, not being a huge connaisseur of old blues - they mostly sound all the same to me...

For what it is worth, Lambada is not the original. The original is a pan-flute tune from Bolivia's Los Kjarkas:spiritualized wrote:Sun City Girls = The Shining Path = 5 (Average). Pretty scrappy recording, but I quite like it.
I'm perhaps just a little too young to remember Lambada's reign - I was two when it was released - and only know it as a song that shows up on Summer parties every now and then, so it doesn't hold much negative weight. Too bad it ruins the experience of the Sun City Girls version for others.

Well, I'm afraid that (just like Henrik said) I prefer to rank than to rate. Anyway I'm going to give it a go. From now on I will rank and rate the songs (using Hymie' scale) every Monday afternoon:
1. J.J. Cale | Magnolia | 7
2. Muddy Waters | Good News | 6
3. Middle Kids | Edge of Town | 5
4. Elton John | Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n Roll) | 5
5. (Sandy) Alex G | Proud | 4
6. Sun City Girl | The Shining Path | 3
1. J.J. Cale | Magnolia | 7
2. Muddy Waters | Good News | 6
3. Middle Kids | Edge of Town | 5
4. Elton John | Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n Roll) | 5
5. (Sandy) Alex G | Proud | 4
6. Sun City Girl | The Shining Path | 3

Re: Biggest Fan - January 2019
Well, that's unfortunate -- not the Lambada part, but that the 1 great tune by Sun City Girls I know about is actually someone else's. (And how the #$!@ do you guys even know that?) I feel obligated to mention them since they're one of the few acts of some note whom Phoenix has claimed. Our newspaper once put them in the top 10 of the 100 best Greater Phoenix rock bands. (The list is from 2000, but probably doesn't even need updating. It's not exactly New York City over here.)Rob wrote:I recognized the tune, which comes from a Bolivian folk song called "Llorando se fue" (and a great tune that is; it formed the basis of the hit Lambada from Kaoma)
I have the Torch of the Mystics CD sitting around at home somewhere, but I wasn't greatly impressed by the band. The original Bolivian band seemed to perform this song better. I hate rating songs (usually I'm a "It's perfect" / "It's OK" "It sucks" kind of guy), but I suppose I could give The Shining Path a 6.
Phoenix's listed top 10 rock acts, by the way, excluding non-homegrown acts:
Alice Cooper at #1, Meat Puppets, Duane Eddy, Gin Blossoms, The Tubes, JFA, Mike Condello, Sun City Girls, Jimmy Eat World, Flotsam and Jetsam.
There's a pretty quick drop-off after that, though we were able to claim Maureen Tucker in the early '80s, and her band (with some of the Sun City Girls) named Paris 1942.

Re: Biggest Fan - January 2019
In this case I did some research, I didn't know it in advance. I heard The Shining Path and recognized the tune, but not this specific version. Since the Lambada isn't part of my usual references I looked up who did the original and the Sun City Girls credited Los Kjarkas. Immediately I wondered why I would know a pan-flute tune from Bolivia from the eighties and looked further and quickly discovered that it was used as Lambada. Kind of odd they all use different titles, though.Live in Phoenix wrote:(And how the #$!@ do you guys even know that?)
I wonder if this song would have fared better if Lambada didn't exist. I thought it's odd but endearing instrumentation would appeal to at least part of this forum. There is something Neutral Milk Hotel about the whole thing. I've listened to it five times again today. I'm hooked. The rest of the album is a lot weirder than this song; this is an avant-garde band after all.
I'm less hooked on today's entry:
Middle Kids - Edge of Town: 5
Not bad to listen to, but lacks any originality and I've forgotten it once it stops (and The Shining Light begins!).

The lambada was definitely the worst (and perhaps the first) "absolute head stuffing commercial summer hit" (one of the best selling single of the time).Live in Phoenix wrote:(And how the #$!@ do you guys even know that?) I feel obligated to mention them since they're one of the few acts of some .
TV + radio non stop for months... and even a few years later, it only takes the first two notes for shivers of disgust to rise up my spine!
And then I heard about the trial with the original band of course....
There's even in France a punk song by "Les garçons bouchers" called "La lambada, I don't like it"

Re: Biggest Fan - January 2019
I did not like Hot Tuna when the hippie potheads in my high school played them back then, and things have not changed much. This one does have a strong bass line for an electric bass (I much prefer the stand up acoustic bass). I gather it's an instrumental, I'm about 2:30 in and no vocals yet. It does not even sound like a finished song to me. Sounds like a band warming up.Romain wrote:7. Hot Tuna – Water Song

Of course it is an instrumental, I said so in my original post. But did you just vote without finishing the song?Hymie wrote:I gather it's an instrumental, I'm about 2:30 in and no vocals yet.
Anyway for me Water Song by Hot Tuna is a very solid 7. This is a good instrumental, with a laidback feel overall, but a lot going on under the cover. It's like American primitivisme attempted by some guys who decided that a little of it goes a long way. That could be lazy, but it makes for a captivating piece music, that fittingly feels like drifting away. I was reminded of Embryonic Journey from Jefferson Airplane and it turns out Hot Tuna is a side project by some members of the Airplane.

(Sandy) Alex G - Proud: 5
Nothing in this song really stood out to me.
Sun City Girls - The Shining Path: 6
The sample is definitely overused, but It does at least have interesting vocals and sound.
Middle Kids - Edge Of Town: 5
The vocals are the best part of the song, but other than that, it was rather bland.
Hot Tuna - Water Song: 5
It might be higher later, but for right now, it's alright.

Hot Tuna
Had just listened to this on youtube. Was looking for their live version of the Jorma original Ice Age when their compilation album Final Vinyl caught my eye - if you haven’t seen that cover, search it out - The guys were not easy on the eyes. Anyway, this song is on it. I thought it was pleasant and very well played. Ultimately didn’t stick with me though. Would rate it a 6

Nice start to the song but then it gets boring soon after.
Middle Kids – Edge of Town 9
Love this song.
Hot Tuna – Water Song 9
Can I vote on my own song? I still remember the first time I heard this song. Lounging on my deck with the hot June sun beating down on me. I felt like I was floating.

You won't get any help from me though. It reminds me of high school too, not because it was big when I was on high school (I'm just a little too old for that), but because it reminds me of the kind of juvenile teenage humor that I sadly didn't find funny when I was a teenager.

Re: Biggest Fan - January 2019
Edited to not rely on comparisons as much (also updating scores)
Muddy Waters – Good News
6 - Great sax and piano but the vocal and lyrical performances aren't as interesting as some other Muddy Waters tracks.
Elton John – Your Sister Can’t Twist (But She Can Rock ‘N Roll)
3 - Some of his songs are my favourites, and some are my least favourites. Even as a kid listening to the album I hated the song. This goes to the same place as Crocodile Rock.
J.J. Cale - Magnolia
6 - This was very gentle and nice, but didn't really catch me until a second listen. This is good music for settling down in the evening.
(Sandy) Alex G - Proud
8 - This is fun! This would be a great song for an adventuring scene in a movie. I love how bouncy it is, and the lyrics aren't mumbly/awkward enough to put me off.
Sun City Girl – The Shining Path
5 - Y'all talking about Lambada but I'm being taken back to a more recent horror of the past that uses the same tune - On the Floor by J-Lo and Pitbull. Hooray for the late 2000's. Moving past that, this is a really interesting take on an old song but it feels like it never goes anywhere.
Middle Kids – Edge of Town
9 - Excellently dramatic, it manages to give off a sound that it sorrowful and hopeful at the same time. Enjoying this one a lot.
Hot Tuna – Water Song
6 - Nice tune but it leaves me feeling like I wanted much more
LMFAO - Yes
1 - No. Some of their stuff is good but this is not.
The Chainsmokers & Coldplay – Something Just Like This
2 - This song is better than Yes by LMFAO, so it's got that going for it
Muddy Waters – Good News
6 - Great sax and piano but the vocal and lyrical performances aren't as interesting as some other Muddy Waters tracks.

I don't hear any Chuck Berry, but you've got that backwards anyway. Muddy was one of Chuck's biggest influences, not the other way around. Chuuck's first record "Wee Wee Hours," (on the flip side of "Maybellene") is clearly his attempt at a Muddy Waters style.Safetycat wrote:Muddy Waters – Good News

The Chainsmokers & Coldplay – Something Just Like This: 4
The frustrating thing about this song (besides it's further confirmation of Coldplay's artistic decline) is that at least the start seems promising. It seems during the first verse that it is building up to something. And than that beat hits, which is the deliverance. Maybe if you are into this kind of beat heavy dance music this could actually be satisfying, but to me it is a disappointment, not least because the beat is pretty standard, even if it sounds heavy enough. The start begs to me for a strong melody as a chorus, but we're not getting it.
The frustrating thing about this song (besides it's further confirmation of Coldplay's artistic decline) is that at least the start seems promising. It seems during the first verse that it is building up to something. And than that beat hits, which is the deliverance. That's pretty much how I felt. I was waiting for something to kick in, and when it finally did it was a dud.Rob wrote:The Chainsmokers & Coldplay – Something Just Like This: 4

Hot Tuna – Water Song: 5
LMFAO - Yes: 2
The Chainsmokers & Coldplay – Something Just Like This: 5
Just listened to Chvrches "Love is Dead" for MA, this would be the second best track on that album and would fit quite well.

I was meaning the other way around, like I can see the influence from Muddy in Berry... maybe I was even thinking of Wee Wee Hours. Looking back on it though I'm not sure why Chuck Berry came to mind since he's not big on the sax, but came to mind he did. My brain makes some very tenuous connections sometimes.Hymie wrote:I don't hear any Chuck Berry, but you've got that backwards anyway. Muddy was one of Chuck's biggest influences, not the other way around. Chuuck's first record "Wee Wee Hours," (on the flip side of "Maybellene") is clearly his attempt at a Muddy Waters style.Safetycat wrote:Muddy Waters – Good News
