Re: Biggest Fan - January 2019

Post by Henrik »

I have enjoyed reading the daily comments, so it is with hesitation I post this top 10 summary of the month. I sort of hope that others will not take after. But for me I feel that ratings does not suit me, especially in an impulsive manner. I’m also not very comfortable by giving a poor rating to a fellow forumer’s favourite song.

Anyway, here it is:

1. Goldfrapp - Strict Machine 9
2. J.J. Cale - Magnolia 8
3. The Stooges - Fun House 8
4. Middle Kids - Edge of Town 8
5. Prince - Love 8
6. Rickie Lee Jones - Chuck E’s in Love 7
7. Medeski, Martin & Wood - Anonymous Skulls 7
8. Queen - Good Company 7
9. Muddy Waters - Good News 7
10. (Sandy) Alex G - Proud 7

4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 were all nice discoveries!

That's fine Henrik; this was always meant as something of a discovery topic, with the poll elements more as something of an incentive for people to keep listening. If a monthly top 10 suits your needs better, please continue. I won't be able to tabulate them into the results of course, but I think you won't mind.

Budka Suflera - Jolka, Jolka pamiętasz: 6
When a Polish song, or something from somewhere in Eastern Europe really, appears I always assume it will be a folk tune. This is nonsense of course, as Jolka, Jolka proves. This is a very eighties rock ballad, with overwrought vocals and a soaring guitar solo near the end. Pretty fun though, regardless of what the guy may be singing about. Knowing the genre, it might be a plus that I don't know and can imagine the sadness in my own heart.

30. Budka Suflera - Jolka, Jolka pamiętasz

A "Hard-Rock" ballad melody, and it's not the kind of thing I really like: 4.5/10

Going to finally start working my way through these as I find the time:
Muddy Waters|Good News|5
Elton John|Your Sister Can't Twist|4
J J Cale|Magnolia|5
(Sandy) Alex G|Proud|4
Sun City Girls|The Shining Path|3
Middle Kids|Edge Of Town|6
Hot Tuna|Water Song|5
LMFAO|Yes|6
Chainsmokers & Coldplay|Something Just Like This|8
Exuma|Love Is Strange|5
Puddle of Mudd|Blurry|7
The Stooges|Fun House|6
Queen|Good Company|6
Rickie Lee Jones|Chuck E's In Love|7
Dusty Springfield|Goin' Back|8
Goldfrapp|Strict Machine|7
Klaatu|Long Live Politzania|5
Diana Ross|I'm Still Waiting|6
The Weeknd|Tell Your Friends|5
Organized Konfusion|Bring It On|6
Kevin Coyne|I Only Want To See You Smile|8
C. A. Quintet|Trip Through Hell, part 2|6
Derek and the Dominoes|It's Too Late|5
Gnarls Barkley|Run (I'm A Natural Disaster)|8
Architecture in Helsinki|Heart It Races|6
The Coral|In The Morning|7
Beyonce|Pray You Catch Me|7
Medeski Martin & Wood|Anonymous Skulls|6
Prince|Love|7
Budka Suflera|Jolka, Jolka Pamietasz|5

Anything making at least a 6 earned a spot on one of my "sampling" playlists. (I have one for each year. All of them are either songs that were recommended to me either in this forum or by someone else I "know" or tunes I heard at least once and feel like they could be a "grower".)

As I continue to listen to them either I decide ultimately they just don't do it for me and they get chopped or they advance to one of....

my yearly playlists i.e. my favorite Spotify-available tunes from a given calendar year. (The "Spotify" part is important...a lot of stuff I love isn't available there.) Anything that got a 7 or above earned an immediate spot on one of those if they weren't already there.

The most rarified (8+) end up in my Spotify library of 10,000 songs which is always in flux.

Nicest discovery: Kevin Coyne. This type of tender "cut open my heart and watch it bleed" ballad can easily end up in saccharine territory. This navigates that razor's edge without falling off in my opinion.

I was trying to edit my previous post to update the ones still lacking ratings and instead replied to my own post. I can't delete this so instead I edited it to admit my culpability. :?

I never really know what to do with things like this. It actually sounds very good, but then the lyrics hit and I just hear The Weeknd bragging about his sex life and, curiously, his drugs addiction ("Don't believe the rumors bitch, I'm still a user
I'm still rocking camo, I still roll with shooters"). He found his audience here and apparently people look up to this, but I just don't have a clue were the attraction to this is. But apparently it is real living ("Singing bout poppin' pills, fucking bitches, living life, so true"). Not the "true life" I am chasing. Of course this reaction shouldn't bother The Weeknd in the slightest, but I don't bother with him either, unless forced to.
This is a lot of the reason why this didn't score higher with me. I can't really identify with the artist. I don't ALWAYS have to...I don't smoke dope or steal but I enjoy Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" and "Take the Money and Run"..but it does make it less likely a song will connect with me if there's no lyrical empathy from me.

I knew it!

I won by a country mile!

127 more songs than second place. Not sure if that's good or bad :music-listening:
Had I been able to get my list finalized in time, that country mile would be considerably less I expect. I have a fondness for several genres like gospel/Christian music, third wave ska, power pop and country (old school country as opposed to Americana not that there's anything wrong with that) that don't seem to get a lot of love in the forums.

Going through all the months I've missed before Rob rolls it all out, I'll go through all the ones I'm familiar with, then see if I've got time for any of the rest:

The Chainsmokers feat. Coldplay- Something Like This 2 Was probably organised by their record labels.
The production sounds like a preset. The lyrics come off like placeholders. The whole project feeds into the laziest criticisms of pop, dance and modern rock, all of which I have fondness for. Not memorably bad enough for a 1.

The Stooges- Fun House 8 I dig the stuff I remember from the Fun House album a lot, the band trying to push themselves as close as they can to where rock and free jazz meet, Iggy perfecting his more authentically American update on Jagger's drawl. Really need to give the album another spin!

Goldfrapp- Strict Machine 8 One of my top triad of Goldfrapp tunes (below Utopia & Train, above Lovely Head). Makes me sing along in a dog-botheringly high voice.

Dusty Springfield- Goin' Back 7 As much as I love Dusty and as much as this kind of regretful lament brings out her strengths, it can't supplant the Byrds' version in my mind, part of their classic Goffin-King double-header with Wasn't Born to Follow.

The Coral- In the Morning 5 Can't begrudge their commercial success with this, having paid it forward with the adventurousness of their debut album, also can't help but wince when I hear the main riff, am I right in thinking it's a glockenspiel? Not that I've got anything against glockenspiels!
All I got inside is vacancy!

I'll rate the rest of the songs featured in this month soon but while I remember, Strict Machine and Fun House should both be 9, not 8, from me- I don't know why I was so stingy with my scores...

I also changed some of my votes, all upgrades:

Middle Kids - Edge of Town: 8 (weird that I gave it a 5 initially, this has been a real grower)
Goldfrapp - Strict Machine: 8
C.A. Quintet - Trip Thru Hell, Pt. 2: 9

# | Artist | Song | Vote | Remarks
1 | Muddy Waters | Good News | 7 | Besides the nice sax intermezzo, a standard Muddy Waters song.
2 | Elton John | Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock ‘n' Roll) | 6 | Playful 78rpm version of a 50's rock & roll song. Too fast for me.
3 | J.J. Cale | Magnolia | 8 | Surprisingly good. One of the better tracks of the album.
4 | (Sandy) Alex G | Proud | 7 | Between nice and good. Might become an 8 after more listens.
5 | Sun City Girls | The Shining Path | 5 | Hilarious Lambada version.
6 | Middle Kids | Edge of Town | 7 | Pleasant indie rock.
7 | Hot Tuna | Water Song | 6 | Background music. Not juicy enough.
8 | LMFAO | Yes | 4 | Yes? No!
9 | The Chainsmokers & Coldplay | Something Just Like This | 4 | I don't need something just like this.
10 | Exuma | Love is Strange | 5 | Bad cover.

BTW my rating system differs from Hymie's:

10 = masterpiece / close to perfection
9 = excellent / outstanding
8 = good / great
7 = okay / nice
6 = weak / mediocre
5 = can live without it
Less than 5 is even worse, so let's say pretty annoying ...

Ratings 8 or higher end up in my Finest Worksongs lists, so I just happily updated the 1972 list. :happy-partydance:

# | Artist | Song | Vote | Remarks
11 | Puddle of Mudd | Blurry | 5 | After the grunge wave we had too much mediocre post-grunge.
12 | The Stooges | Fun House | 7 | Energetic and raw, but a bit too long.
13 | Queen | Good Company | 6 | Beatlesque Queen. Not so special.
14 | Rickie Lee Jones | Chuck E.'s in Love | 7 | Rumour has it Chuck E.'s still in love.
15 | Dusty Springfield | Goin' Back | 7 | Version from The Byrds is better.
16 | Goldfrapp | Strict Machine | 8 | I feel love revisited. Yummy.
17 | Klaatu | Long Live Politzania | 5 | Cannot dig this prog, sorry.
18 | Diana Ross | I'm Still Waiting | 7 | Overall not a fan of her, but this song is okay.
19 | The Weeknd | Tell Your Friends | 4 | Immature and meaningless to me.
20 | Organized Konfusion | Bring It On | 5 | Not annoying, but also not my cup of tea.

You have my full respect for the Finest Worksongs name! My favourite R.E.M. tune can change by the day but the Other Mix of FW has spent more time at the top of my list than most :music-guitarred:

Thanks mileswide. My favorite R.E.M. tune is from their early years: Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)

At the end of the 90s the now well-known mp3 format came to us.
Intead of making mixtapes, I started to download music (this is more than 20 years ago, so I guess you cannot arrest me for that illegal action anymore :-)) and compile my own mix-CDs with mp3 files.
I shared it with friends and also with colleagues and wanted to have a good name for it listening during work time.

On the Dutch radio, there used to be a program called "Arbeidsvitaminen" meaning somethig like "vitamines for work", so I figured it should be something like that. But since R.E.M. was (and still is) my favorite all-time band, their Document starter seemed more appropriate to use. So it happened, and over a period of about 5 years I made it all the way to Finest Worksongs Volume 15 :-)

I had almost forgotten about this, but since I got all hooked up on Spotify, mainly for discovering so much new music, I also started to create lists again and obviously these lists had to be called FW, right?

Naturally! You had to "take your instinct by the reins" (man, R.E.M. songs make even less sense when they're quoted out of context) I've checked out your AT Finest Worksongs on Spotify and plenty of common ground there, This Is the Day, Common People and Banquet all hovering round my top 100 too :music-listening:

And REM are my #1 band as well, so you're in good company (well, you're in company at least!)
