I’ve never been a huge Joy Division fan myself but I do see why this song has endured. It’s one of the creepiest things I’ve ever heard, especially knowing what happened to Ian Curtis in the end. It sticks with you.
So, for you guys creepy is good?

Ok. I've updated my list.
But I was caught, like a fleeting thought,
Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind

Both this and the album seem to be from 1981 according to discogs and RYM. Is there a source where you have it being released in 1980?

Okay, I checked and it was number one in the UK in the late summer of 1980. Apparently it took a year for it to become a hit if it was released in 1979.

This is the one I have:

https://rateyourmusic.com/release/singl ... _night_f1/

I don't know if the USA release got delayed, or if this 1981 release is a re-recording.

Huh! My guess would be a delay as it was a hit in the UK first (and she's Scottish), but re-recorded songs weren't uncommon at the time either, so it's hard to know.

It can be. Music is meant to evoke emotions, if it evokes them elegantly no particular emotion is inherently positive or negative.

Usually those later issues still have the date of the original release on the label, but this one says 1981.

I don't agree with that. Every emotion comes with some degree of positivism or negativity.

When something creeps me out it's a negative.

Evoking negative emotions isn't an inherent negative from an artistic standpoint. Do you also hate depressing movies? You're entitled to your opinion, but you shouldn't be calling it out as a negative quality of others' tastes.

There are some disputed dates for each of these. I see that all of these are listed as 1980 albums on RYM, but they have different release dates on discogs:

1978 for Na Cambança

1981 for Gwindingwi Rine Shumba

1979 for It'll All Be Over

I'm happy to count them if they are indeed 1980 releases, but I don't know which source is more reliable for the date here.

Yeah, same here. It’s part of why I like a lot of British alt-rock from the ‘80s.

Both this and the album seem to be from 1981 according to discogs and RYM. Is there a source where you have it being released in 1980?
So I was lazy and got that date from Wikipedia -- I will trust RYM and Discogs over that.

Also, I completely forgot about Steve Reich (my #2 album!) and John Adams; my lists have been updated accordingly to account for their inclusion and the removal of Eddie Palmieri. Thank you!

Dexys Midnight Runners' "Burn It Down" is a straight re-recording of "Dance Stance", which was released in 1979 as a single so probably should go into that year instead. I have it as my #12 currently (someone else listed it as well, but way outside top 20). Anyway, my point is if you choose not to use it as a 1980 release, please feel free to move everything else up one. In the future, I will count it as a 1979 song.

Thanks!

A re-recording goes in the year when it was released, like the IRS version of "We Got The Beat" is 1981.

Hi Moonbeam - sorry if this is a big inconvenience but after a bit of research it appears Be True by Bruce Springsteen, which i put in my top 5, was in fact first released in 1981 as a b-side (I assumed that all the River singles were released in 1980 but given the album came quite late in the year most arrived in 1981). I don't know if you want to change this or leave it but if you do change it can everything else move up on my list and How I Wrote Elastic Man by The Fall come in at the last place? (And I thoroughly reccommend Be True as an underrated listen for the 1981 poll for anyone who doesn't know it.)

It was listed as 1980 on RYM, but I'll go back and edit.

Thanks! It can be a bit tricky working out release dates. As a general rule, I'll go with AM first, and then check discogs and RYM.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've removed the song from my list and added "The Affectionate Punch" by The Associates.
