No great surprises near the bottom of the list, with the points gap between #150 & #149 being the largest points gap outside the top 10.

Sadly all the songs in the poll that are unranked on AM all drop in this group. Also we have our first 3 #1 votes.

Wonderful new (to me) word: Melisma is the singing of a single syllable of text while moving between several different notes in succession. Music sung in this style is referred to as melismatic.
I'll have to find a way to use it in conversation as an aide-memoire, something like "I don't like American Idol because..."

140. Mariah Carey - Vision of Love

Year of Release: 1990 (#12 in year poll)
AM 1990s songs rank: 762 (4995 all-time)

LiveinPhoenix: I preferred Mariah Carey as a pseudo-Whitney Houston act. I've gotten sort of tired of melismatic singing, but this song has the most amazing rendition of a single word ("all").

LiveinPhoenix: This was the soundtrack of me dropping Beck, in retrospect. Besides "Sexx Laws" being less catchy than "Loser" and "Where It's At," the odd edge was gone, and I guess I said to myself, "Well how much of this nonsense do I really want to listen to?"

So sorry I couldn't get my songs list done in time for this. I would've given a huge boost to "Farmer in the City" and "Would?", which both would've likely been in my top 10. My jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw how low "Farmer in the City" was (I thought there were a lot of Scott Walker fans in the forum). And "Would?" is one of the darkest songs I've ever heard, which is great for me, but might not be so wonderful for others. Anyway, I hope to participate in the albums poll to lift my favorites a bit. (Seeing my favorite songs fall so quickly has put the fear of God into me. :P )

Yes. I did think of getting rid of that section, but I got very busy so I just used the program I wrote a few years ago without alteration. Maybe it will be gone for the Albums roll-out.

Thanks very much for doing this again, DaveC. You've hosted quite a few of these big, time-consuming polls, and they always seem to be error-free. You make it look easy, and I know it's not! And the presentation is looking very good once again.

While listening to the 150 songs that made it through to the final this time round, I missed some of the world music / non-English language songs that made the final cut when we did the 1990s polls back in 2012 - songs by artists like Buena Vista Social Club, Rachid Taha, Alain Bashung, Madredeus, Yann Tiersen, William Sheller, and especially my beloved Cesária Évora...

Image

R.I.P.

Some of the people who helped those artists to get through last time didn't participate in the 1990s polls last year, which goes a long way to explaining the omissions. I guess I just miss a time when the forum felt more international and people seemed to be more open to non-anglophone music. But such is life, right? Things change. And it's not like there's a lack of quality (whatever that means) in the 150 songs that are being counted down at the moment. I'm looking forward to the rest of the roll-out and will be following it closely.
...will keep us together.

As it turns out, it's doing really terrible.

I'll have to find a way to use it in conversation as an aide-memoire, something like "I don't like American Idol because..."
I didn't know this either, but this actually a perfect description of the singing style of Mariah Carey/ Celine Dion/ Whitney Houston that I find insufferable. It always sounds like fake drama to me. Vision of Love at #150 was a very easy choice.

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw how low "Farmer in the City" was (I thought there were a lot of Scott Walker fans in the forum).
I wouldn't call myself a Scott Walker fan, if only because I know too little of him, but some song of his have gripped me in the past. Farmer in the City, on the other hand, not so much. It is a drag to get through for me honestly. That whole auction part never seems to end. I also can not believe Scott Walker in the role of a farmer. He sounds too much like a posh, elite gentleman. That's the opera influence of course, but I have never gotten into opera either, so there we go.

Ha - that's something I'd never considered before. As someone who grew up around many farmers, it's hard to argue that point! (Though, given it's been a favorite of mine for many years, I'm hoping that thought won't cross my mind much when I listen to it in the future!)

I wish all the artists who rated several songs had at least some of those songs out of the "top 100". It would be a more interesting list.

I like the non-fans to show up.
In the list of "fans" could have the 3 biggest fans. "I See a Darkness" is in my top 20 and I was not listed (too big the competition).
:D :D :D :D

I'm amazed at the failure of Pavement and the rap tracks.

I hope to be surprised with the list! :happy-partydance:

Yes rap is having a bad time, but it had a bad time in the last 90s poll too while doing better in the all-time songs polls. Maybe something to do with the different scoring systems?

It sure is impacted by the way the decade polls work, as all the songs are ranked, if a few people have a bias against one genre, it starts with a significant handicap ; in a direct poll, nobody can give negative point, you only push what you love up, so hip-hop struggles less. Probably also what hurts Mariah Carey, Pavement, post-rock and the rare electro songs that made the cut.
Though if I'm being honest, with a couple exceptions, I don't think we picked the very best of the genre to represent it on that round. Mama Said Knock You Out is imo pretty terrible, Onyx's "Let boys be boys" is not a sentence you'd want to hear by now, My Name Is, Hypnotize, Nuthin' But a G-Thang and California Love do nothing to me... Tons of hip-hop songs I'd rather have seen here.

On the other hand, Protect Ya Neck is a freaking masterpiece and should have been way higher ! I don't think there has ever been a track carried by that many rappers' charisma (though the yet to appear Scenario is a great contender), the beat is perfect, it's insanely quotable... heck even the intro skit is awesome !

I feel almost guilty for having Pavement in my bottom 15 three times. I hoped this poll would finally get me to appreciate them, but really I bar a couple of songs (like Here, which I quite like) I have a big problem getting into it. In much of these songs the instrumental part and the singing seem unconnected, and Malkmus way of singing doesn't seem any way musical to me, not even in a Lou Reed way, maybe because his lyrics seem to miss a poetry of their own. Many Pavement songs seem to have the instrumentals and the singer both vying for my attention separately, cancelling each other out in the process. It is a unique way of approaching music for sure, but as of yet it just doesn't connect with me.

lol - classic film (but didn't they both end up dying in the end?).
No matter, I've given up trying to convince this generation of Maroon 182 fans - as long as I "get" it, I'm good (but glad to know I have a partner)...
going to see Malkmus solo in May - he's still the man.

Amen!!!!! If I had voted Pavement would have ranked even lower. They’re very bland, dry and emotionless and I get nauseous whenever I see people clump them with Sonic Youth and Pixies. No way! Not even close. When I think of the actual word critics or indie music snobs this bad immediately comes the mind.

I'm really surprised at the relative unpopularity of the more alternative acts here (MBV, Pavement, Talk Talk etc.). I always assumed they would be forum favourites

Bafflingly, Bjork too has detractors.

And so Björk refuses to appear and so she has three entries in one update. I wonder if everything by her will show up soon. I always have a feeling that she is a very love it or hate it artist, meaning that people who like her have everything by her ranked high and people who don't have everything low, so it would make sense if the ratings are close together. We'll see.

Human Behavior is probably the song I listened most to thanks of this poll. I fell for it all of a sudden.

Interestingly for me she's mostly a like not love artist. I have all her songs somewhere between place 25 and 80. But I would guess too that most of her songs will show up soon.

By the way how can somebody dislike "Dry the rain"? I get it when its mostly listed at middling places, but near the end?

« Friday I’m In Love » is a fun example of cultural divide in my opinion.

If Wikipedia is to be believe, 14 Cure songs charted in France, Friday I’m In Love didn’t (High, from the same album, did), and while Close to Me, Boys Don’t Cry, Just Like Heaven or In Between Days are staples of rock radios, and you sometimes hear Lullaby or Lovesong, I don’t think I ever heard Friday I’m In Love on there growing up. So imagine my surprise when I discovered it was the one on heavy rotation in the US and that everybody seemed to know it.
Similarly, all the Cure albums since the Head on the Door made it to the top 10 in the French charts, except Wish, one of the 2 that achieved the same feat in the US.
So, do I dislike it because I’m French ? Probably not, that’d be an unsatisfying reason (and I have friends who love it), but for a Cure song, it seems way too restrained and unconvincing, rarely do Robert Smith seem less into what he is singing. It’s not an issue of being upbeat, The Cure can pull that magnificently, but when you listen to The Lovecats for instance, you can really hear the excitement in all instruments and in Smith’s delivery. Friday, on the other hand, just falls flat to my hears.

So, personally, well as you can see, I've not got her tracks all ranked high or all ranked low. But, I have got a love/hate thing with her. Some of her songs I absolutely love, others I just don't get.

To be fair, despite what I wrote I have the same thing as you and my votes for her were spread out too. Although I feel that with Björk it isn't so much a song to song thing as an album to album case, unsuprising as her albums tend to have a very uniform sound. So songs from the first three albums as well as Vulnicura do generally well with me, but the ones from for example Vespertine and the impenetrable (to me) Utopia somehow fail to captivate me. Still, I like that she dares to find a new sound for each album even if it doesn't always connect with me personally.

Very happy to see Save Me make the top half of the list, albeit barely. Thought it wouldn't make the top 100, so that is a nice surprise.

I think an important thing when considering lows here is that sometimes they're simply low among the pack. There's only two songs among these 150 that I would give less than a 7/10, and about 120 are in the top 3000 update I'm currently working on. I'm usually on the more extreme end with my taste lining up with the general critic/forum taste, but I'm sure there are a few of us who like most of these songs but still had to rank something last due to the nature of the system.

I'm not trying to knock anyone's ice cream off their cone, but I seem to like rock music that is kind of larger than life, and Beta Band -- and they'd hardly be the only indie rockers like this -- seem like some very ordinary people. (The name choice of the band might even be speaking to this.) A current example in the other direction would be the Swans -- who are not a new band but I've been enjoying their Seer album, and will likely enjoy their followup.

Didn't mean to stir up controversy with my comment on "Friday I'm In Love". I think for a lot of older Cure fans like myself who were into the band long before this song came out it was a huge disappointment. While it's true they had some mainstream success in the US since 1987, this song seemed to appeal more to people who were not necessarily big fans of the band than those who were big fans of the band in the 80s. I realize that those who were not around or too young at that time may view it differently.

Hadn't Robert Smith done a lot of pop moves before that? Off the top of my head, In Between Days and Why Can't I Be You? would seem like a major shift for Pornography fans.

Yes. "Boys Don't Cry" is an even earlier example of a pure pop song. The Cure always had elements of pop in their music even in their darker days. I guess "Friday I'm In Love" just came across as a more blatant attempt at mainstream success to me. Obviously a lot of people love this song, and I believe it's the 5th or 6th highest ranked Cure song on AM. Ironically the band's mainstream popularity didn't last long after this, nor did their critical appeal. I think the lasting influence of the Cure is pretty much the 80s output.

As the lead single, I wanted this to be their next "Losing My Religion", but if that was any song on this album, it was "Man on the Moon."

Nirvana and Radiohead have 25% of the top 50 this leaves a tedious list.

But the result is very similar to previous forum polls, so it's no surprise.

The first Radiohead song will drop at #50: The only song in the 50-41 range to perform worse than it did in the all-time songs poll last year.

Yes, I was just thinking how striking it is that all of their songs made the top 50. It is a bit much, although I ranked the Radiohead's rather favorably myself, so I'm part of the problem. With Nirvana, not so much, they are very spread out over my list.

A bigger surprise is that French Disko and Birdhouse in Your Soul ranked so high. I thought they would be in the bottom 50 for sure. Birdhouse made a huge jump compared to the last 90's poll, but French Disko was apparently already very popular last time around. I never knew.

I'm the reverse. Nirvana made up a decent chunk of my top 50 (I know for sure one of them was my #1) but Radiohead was spread out. I'm almost positive I'll be the lowest vote for Street Spirit (Fade Out).

Well, i'm probably underating their first albums a bit because they became so insufferable over time. But to be honest even teen me back in the nineties thought they were kind of boring.
