Re: Billboard - 500 Best Pop Songs of All Time (2023 - Staff list)

Super interesting choices on the Top 100 to Not Hit the Hot 100. The scrolling on these types of lists seems to cripple my phone, but did I miss “Don’t Speak” and “Stairway to Heaven?” Seemed like shoo-ins for this particular countdown. According to them: "(For the record: Because we did count...

Re: Albumism (USA) - The 100 Greatest Soundtracks of All-Time (2020)

Right, I'd say the Prince contributions rightfully deserve a spot on any top soundtrack list. I also like the American Graffiti soundtrack as much as anyone, but is that a celebration of music curation? (with a small dash of "what can we afford the rights to?") They included Grease, which ...

What a strange list. Is there a reason for ignoring musicals almost entirely? You can’t make a list of the best soundtracks and omit something like West Side Story. Doing so makes this read more like the 100 Greatest Compilations of All Time.

Re: 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (Rolling Stone Magazine version 2021)

I hate to be a bit cynical here, but I suspect that if Toxic were sung by any other artist, it would be easily in the top 50. I might actually think the opposite - a few inclusions here make it clear they are appealing to recent news events, so all the focus on Britney Spears recently probably help...

Re: 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (Rolling Stone Magazine version 2021)

What an interesting list! As always, a lot to digest, but a few initial thoughts: Similarly surprised at Dreams’s resurgence. Top 10 is likely a bit much, but I’m not mad and love that Rumours is well-represented. Of all of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks showcases, I’d probably actually replace it wit...

JR - right. I was just thinking that a casual listener who picked up the CD (when that was something people still did) would probably assume it was just a greatest hits compilation. I also much prefer the single mix of Borderline to the album version. And Express Yourself is such an interesting phen...

Something like Immaculate is just such a force to be reckoned with, that it's ingrained in many's minds. It so defined its era,...

Definitely a lot to parse through, but my immediate reactions: Definitely more diverse, which is heading in the right direction. I do love seeing To Pimp a Butterfly over Sgt Pepper, and agree with Abbey Road as the highest Beatles entry. Some surprises with most recent entries - I don’t have a part...

Am I missing something about the criteria for this list? Is there a reason Stop Making Sense doesn't qualify? Otherwise, it seems like a notable omission. Overall, a very interesting list.

Surprised to see this came from MTV, but impressed with the selection. Particularly The Archandroid, Teen Dream, This is Happening, and Body Talk. And of course, number 1 is hard to argue with.

Alright, a lot of reactions after mine, many as a direct response and I thought to expand on my thoughts. Instead of reacting to everyone one by one, I take a more general approach. It became a little long, so I added some headlines for people who just want to skip to parts they find interesting. O...

I’d buckle up, because I think that is where the world is moving. And honestly, it probably should. I don’t get this argument that Spears was somehow a “manufactured product” that could have been any other woman. If the industry could have just manufactured 30 more Britneys with the same level of s...

That’s a solid top ten and then you get to number one and I couldn’t help but think that they put Baby One More Time at 1 but Losing My Edge at 45 Genuinely curious where you think it should be. The UK has had so many more interesting #1s than the US chart. It is incredible that songs like Setting Sun and Uptown Top Ranking topped the charts. Even Get Lucky and Bad Romance weren't US #1s. Ehh it swings both ways. For instance, Prince only had one UK #1 and it was “The Most Beautiful Girl i...
